I had the Prime and exchanged it with Tf700 from Best Buy. Got infinity today from best buy after opening the box found the scratches on the screen and also one minor crack on the screen. This is not the reason i don't like the infinity because i can exchange with another one from best buy bcos they 30 days return policy. But the reason i don't like the infinity is the web browsing is not that fast considering it has quad core 1.6 ghz processor.The wifi i have is very fast works great with other devices. Right now i am typing with the infinity and it is so hard to type it. Typing is not smooth either. It is taking long time to write on this also the cursor to correct typos is not very accurate. The screen is as promised crisp, gaming is also high quality. Camera is good too. But i dont like the browsing and writing lag. Plus once the browser shut down automatically. I have update it to the latest firmware. Looks like the processor is not capable of handling high resolution or maybe something else.

Install Chrome. It is way better than the stock browser. And I highly recommend getting Swift Key 3 for tablets. Best keyboard hands down.

There has been so much negative reaction. You would think the reviews would have been more negative but they were mostly positive. I am hoping that JB update comes sooner rather than later and that it corrects the awful I/O issues, as it was reported. I wonder why of all Android tabs out there with ICS and inferior hardware, this one is so affected. I guess people expected more, which is understandable given it is a $500 to $600 tablet.

I hope asus bring some kind of update to fix whatever the error is. But frankly speaking I don't like custom Roms I just want stock Roms and wants asus to fix the issue. I have the original galaxy tab and rooted and zipped custom rom but never like the tablet afterwards. Thanks for the reply.

What you are disappointed about are app specific things, not infinity, so not really correct title of the thread.
Also, allow a pad to settle down for few days. Mine is faster and faster. This is normal thing with android.
One weird thing though.

I was even considering using stock one and delete chrome as the only thing i miss with stock browser is "other devices" tabs.
For example, one thing that i like with stock and can't find in chrome is fit to screen. This forum is always over the edge of screen on chrome, and have to double-tap it to resize, every time. With stock browser, its just perfect.

I think you do well to give it some more time. I love the hard keyboard, but it takes a little while to get accustomed to its feedback. My wife won't type a thing on it because she is used to blind-typing and that doesn't work too well, apparently. I guess the spacing is off and so she has to look at the keyboard while typing. (I do that more or less continuously, but my typing speed isn't even so far off from hers -- at least on a normal desktop keyboard, to give her a fair chance. )
Asus is supposedly working on a new firmware fix to address the I/O issues according to a recent post from Gary (asus rep) from the Prime forum. Hopefully that will resolve the issues.
Please don't forget to send all your issues to Asus support. If they are aware that a lot of users are disappointed, they might speed tacking the issue.
Don't expect a lot of useful feedback though ... I just had some generic mails back saying to reset the Tab / check for updates ...

I do type on other devices which has touch screen but did not find much hassle. I have android tablets. But as other poster said give some time to tablet and i find this correct because as now i am typing with infinity it is easier than before. But every now and then the space comes between alphabets. I used swype while typing so far it is 100% accurate.

Don't forget the "Swiftkey Keyboard for Tablets" as well. Soooo much better. I also love the pumpkin orange theme.

Yes thats true tablet needs some time to settle. As i found it is getting better. Great forum otherwise i have decided to return it for refund.

I am enjoying my Nexus S for the peace of mind it brings: knowing I'm running stock Android and that I'm going to get future updates first.
Having said that, I do wish the experience wasn't marred by issues and glitches (specifically with the random ringtones, and the occasional, yet nevertheless frustrating, screen scrolling and icon issues). I'm looking forward to the next bug fix update. Fixing these issues I predict will go a long way in making me really happy.
I'd like to add: One aspect of the phone, and of Android in general, that I feel sorely about is the keyboard. No matter how one twists it - for example, one might say it's improved over previous Android keyboards, which is true - it pales in comparison to the accuracy and response of Apple's keyboard. This is not to start some immature Apple vs. Google flame war; anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will understand the difference. It's also a shame Google seems insistent on copying even Apple's mistakes, for example, the lack of customization and custom auto-correct features. I can't wait until Blindtype is implemented. It's sorely needed.

I don't understand your keyboard issue? Will you elaborate? I have used an iPhone extensively and still can't figure out how to make it do Swype...
Regarding your glitches, I recommend an exchange - I have none of those issues...
I use NS rotate with MT4 on main line (has 4g web attached), but I may upgrade 3rd line to preferred 4G web in order to use along with MT4.
NS and MT4 are great phones, and probably they're the best phones for T-Mobile so far.
IMHO I think its common for new phones to have some sort of fault, its not perfect but of sure is a great device.

I'd agree. I was an iphone user for nearly 4 years and it is one of the most difficult parts of switching to Android. The iphone keyboard did seem to be much more accurate (Or maybe after years of typing on it, i was just REALLY used to it). I did originally download the swiftkey keyboard, which seemed easier to get used to originally but i had a problem with SMS that could not be solved any other way but a factory restore. And since then i've given the stock keyboard a bit more of a chance and after a couple of weeks i have to say it's not nearly as bad as i originally thought.

you have to manually change the settings in the keyboard to enable vulgar language. Try that if you haven't already
edit: sorry that's for voice input, I thought it was for the kb.
If u love the ios keyboard so much dl smart keyboard from the market. It even has an ios layout and skin. U can also adjust the multitouch sensitivity.

Ironically, i'm still spending more quality time with my I9000M than with the Nexus S
the SNS works out of the box, almost perfectly, there is no major flaw, nothing to FIX
in the other hand the SGS it is full of PROBLEMS, and in a weird twist of thing, it's fun to FIX it
it'll be horrible though if that was your only phone, and you need it for business.

I suppose everyone's experience is different, but I find when typing on an iPhone (or even an iPod), the keyboard response and speed is superior to Android's - I find myself typing far more confidently. (Anybody else constantly type "km" when trying to type "I'm" with stock Android keyboard?)
I'm using Smart Keyboard Pro already, and it is indeed a step up from stock Android keyboard. However, it seems to not be optimized for Gingerbread. I've reached out to the developer but haven't heard from him yet. It seems to especially miss space bar taps, so I'll often get words likethis; it also seems to miss really fast presses, especially when letters are close to each other. A common example is "you". I'll try the iPhone emulator keyboard that someone suggested and see how that goes. Thank you.
Edit: It looks like the iPhone keyboard, but it doesn't type like the iPhone keyboard. I'm not sure if this is software related or hardware related, but something about the Nexus S screen is almost too sensitive - you can hover your finger over the screen and it'll register presses; this might be making the typing experience worse than it should be. I don't know. I'll stick to Smart Keyboard Pro, which is as responsive as it gets typing on Android. Plus, it has no-brainer features which I don't understand why Google/Apple don't implement into their stock keyboards (like custom auto-correct - this feature goes miles in improving typing; or long pressing for second key symbols).

Well, beyond the obvious (not ignoring the settings and rotating from portrait back to landscape when mounted in the dock), I see the following:
* Stock Back, Home, and Recent Apps buttons, rather than the Asus modified ones (which I think look far better).
* New font (most noticeable in the clock, but it's different everywhere).
* Settings menu is completely rearranged into four categories, and now includes some switches (Wifi, Bluetooth) in the left column.
* The names and icons for some of the pre-existing items in the left column of the Settings menu have changed.
* Much less info and no System Firmware Update option on About page.
* Bright instead of dark blue background on selected items, also bright blue divider lines in status menu at lower right
* Bottom of status menu now flush with top of system bar, not overlapped
* Ugly graduated darkening effect on the right side of the screen with the status menu is now gone, so is the even uglier blue glow effect at top and bottom of the menu, replaced with a much cleaner drop shadow for the whole menu.
* No day of the week in the date, and it all fits on one line
* The "sun" icon to the right of the battery level (which one would expect to have something to do with brightness, but it doesn't) is replaced with a different icon, albeit still one that doesn't seem to have any purpose.
* The Settings icon at top left is replaced with a more logical one.

the orginal asus transformer is staying on the market and the asus transformer prime is getting sold as a premium tablet for around £750 so the fact that the tf101 is staying on the market suggests is will get a OTA update however we may have to wait a while as they will put more efforts into getting it out to the asus transformer prime and it takes them a while to edit the software to make the dock work. however if both transformers can take exactly the same OS with the same alterations (the is no reason they cant however the dock firmware updates may differ due to different design) then we should see it in december when the asus transformer prime update is said to be ready

You misunderstand. The picture in this thread has absolutely nothing to do with Asus. They already have Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Prime and almost certainly on the original Transformer too, in a state far advanced from that in the picture, because they have access not only to the Ice Cream Sandwich source, but also the drivers for all the hardware etc. required to get everything running.
The picture in this thread was made by somebody who built the Ice Cream Sandwich source into their OWN rom, likely taking drivers from other existing roms to get everything working. As confirmed in a video from (I believe) the same user on YouTube, rotation doesn't work in their build, and nor does audio work at all. It's merely a work in progress, right now.
A separate video on YouTube shows the Prime running Ice Cream Sandwich, and it looks to work very well. I would guess it's either in testing, awaiting approval for release, or both. I'd also guess that the build for the original Transformer -- which Asus have very clearly stated that we WILL be getting -- is in the exact same state, since Asus knows exactly what the hardware differences are between the two, and can easily swap out drivers etc.
I would wager there will be far bigger differences in the tablet firmware than in the dock firmware, by the way. The dock is almost unchanged -- the keyboard is identical, the card slot is identical, the USB connectivity is identical (there's just less physical ports), the only real differences are that I don't believe they're using the same battery pack, they've supposedly put an unported subwoofer in the dock, and I would be surprised if they've not redesigned their power circuitry some more to try and resolve some of the complaints about battery life that lingered after the first-gen Transformer dock update.

People are misunderstanding that this picture comes from a third-party who does not work for Google or Asus, and who simply is building the source and trying to make it work on his own personal tablet. He's not got orientation support working yet; that has nothing to do with ICS on retail products.
How would it make any sense whatsoever for Google to remove landscape-mode support that was present in Honeycomb?

I'm frankly surprised if Google's own partners apparently aren't getting access to internal builds of Android before the public source code release. (Or are Nvidia perhaps being somewhat disingenuous and just not mentioning they have that access, and hence basically had only minor tweaking to do so as to get the last version of the source working with the Prime?)

What difference does that make? It's built on the same source, and for very closely related hardware. You can pretty-much guarantee Asus already has a fork of the same code at much the same stage of development, just with a few drivers swapped out here and there where there are changes from the original Transformer. It wouldn't make any sense for them to have two different development teams working on something so similar.

The screen is like a mirror? Even indoors all i can see is my own face when looking at the screen? How can there be no mention of this in any review on the internet? (ive looked at official reviews from techradar, pocket lint etc etc and peoples opinions on forums etc).

invisible shield helps, but raising the brightness, even just a little, helps too.
Just try to adjust your xoom brightness from settings - display. Do you have a screen protector ? Which rom are you on?

No I don't have a screen protector at the minute, I only got the XOOM today.
Im using the stock rom, gingerbread I believe.
The device seems almost unusable during the day, its literally like a mirror. I have turned the brightness up however any timed the screen isnt displaying bright images the reflections are really really bad.
Surely this can't just be a problem with mine?
It also seems quite sluggish. For example, as im writing this message there's a delayed reaction between when I press the key and when it appears on screen. Flicking through we pages also lags and the text looks blurry.
Would these issues improve if I ugdated to ics?

Stock honeycomb was fairly laggy. Custom roms and ics have fixed such issues.

All these issues are/can be fixed by upgrading to ICS/rooting/custom rom/3rd party launcher/matte screen protector. The Xoom is the best overall tablet out there, but that's because it has the best development.
i just got a xoom the other day i admit it is quite like a mirror but i love the shiny glass, keep brightness high and perhaps use a matte screen protector
one thing i will say is that honeycombe was ugly and slow,
i rooted unlocked and using stable teameos 2.0 rom ics with 1.5ghz oc and interactive governor
all ur issues will be gone, im playing shadowgun and modern combat 3 on my xoom and they run fantastic!!

To what extent does a matte screen protector work? One of the main reasons I could justify buying a tablet was to put it on the wall in the spare room to watch video on when using the treadmill! I just went in the watched a bit of a movie (must say it plays mkvs so easily even on gingerbread) and in the darker scenes I really could hardly see the picture, could just see myself.

yes you can reverse the process its easy,
matt just takes out the "shine" of the surface to very minimal (all surfaces will absorb some amount of light, glass takes in alot)
so there you go, unlock it, root it, get ics on teameos 2.0 is a stable release and get it running at 1.5ghz interactive (very stable)
u will notice a big difference

when you get to the step that states download android sdk, dont, just make sure u got java installed then download the adb fastboot zip pack, rather than downloading the android sdk full as that will waste time for no reason

Yes, you can. You can hide the status bar and show it whenever you need if you are running a nightlies build from eos team... Which rom are you on?

I've been thinking...If you don't love it as it is (with Honeycomb stock, why would you?) and if you don't love tinkering, but just want something pretty ok out of the box, why not just return it? If you like making your device fantastic by rooting and flashing new roms, and so on, you couldn't have found a better tablet. But if you are not that type, you should get something else...
Unlocking it will void your warranty, and you need to unlock to do any mods. But as it has been said, it is all reversible.
Thanks for all the input guys. I do like tinkering, the reason I went for this tablet was because its so versatile.
I have never rooted a device before etc but im quite good with pc`s so I shud be able to do it ok by following the guide. (Thanks for the link)

i dont know anyone else with a xoom.
im starting to think this now though... as nobody really is commenting on their screen. Its as if everyone is ignore my question! Like when a dark scene is on i can barely see whats happening, can just see myself and whatevers behind me..

I'm kinda jealous, but at the same time I reckon the Infinity looks so much nicer. So, I might pass and wait for next year's model.
Anyway, this is not about the Nexus 10 (there is already another thread for that).
This is about Android 4.2's layout; Google has seem to have removed the tablet UI and I'm not sure I like it. It would seem weird to have the navigation buttons in the center, especially if your using it in landscape! I don't see any advantages to why Google are taking this route. You will have essentially a big black bar on the bottom, just for 3 buttons, seems pretty silly to have on 'widescreen' tablet. So now the notification bar at the top now; more screen estate wasting.
I understand what they are try to do with the whole 'unified experience' stuff. But I don't see any other positive to this.
Don't get me wrong tho, I still want the update; and I might like it if I see it in person. Hopefully Asus announces version 11 soon

I think I would prefer the nav buttons in the centre. I often hold the tab in my left hand and navigate with my right hand - it seems counter productive to keep reaching to the left hand corner with my right hand...
That layout will most likely only be on the nexus 10 and not 4.2 for the infinity. Its the same layout as the Nexus 7 jelly bean. Its the phablet layout.
i mean it doesn't look that bad. Having the notifications slide down is nicer then the current pop-up. and also having the toggle switch on the right hand side is nice

A ridiculous waste of screen space that you really can't afford on a 10" device. There was absolutely no need to separate button and notification bars. I certainly hope ASUS doesn't bring this UI "upgrade" over to the Infinity.

Yeah, the Nexus 7 is the same way. Even on a 7 inch device (perhaps even *more* so on a 7 inch device), it just doesn't seem to make much sense to have separate button and notification bars. I much prefer the "all on one bar" approach....

I like the 4.1 layout, I think it is really well thought out. I like the big time in notification area, so I do not use any time widget, and I like the large status icons too. Entirely the bottom bar is well organized.
I'm not sure about the 4.2 but it looks they made the bottom bar smaller to win space for top bar. The 4.2 layout is probably the big step backwards many people will hate on their tablets.
Are we getting 4.2?

Google says they want to have a consistent UI between phones and tablets. And I think it's a terrible idea. They are different form factors, used differently and should have different UIs.
I really wish we could stop acting like the average human is too stupid to find the navigation buttons on a tablet just because they are moved to the left instead of the center.
If we figured out how to make fire and create tools, then for the love of God, I have faith we'll figure out how to find the navigation buttons and menu if it's in a different place.

I did say "See". I'm a designer, my comment was purely visually-based. I haven't had my hands on 4.2 to see if it works the same as w8, have you?
Looks like they're trying to unify 'form', function notwithstanding. That would be unfortunate.
I actually saw someone theme their Tab so that all controls were on the sides of the screen with the middle empty or with widgets. Screen links on one side, apps on the other. They never had to reach for anything. Seemed like a smart layout.
Hopefully the people at Cyanogenmod will be able to give you a choice between the layouts when CM 10 goes 4.2, also don't think this is the smartest move by Google.
I'm just going to do what I did to my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7, which is disable the navbar and use LMT Launcher. I really don't mind the status bar on top though.

Judging from what I have seen of the 4.2 version of the tf300 (which shouldn't be too different from our Infinities), you'll have the option to switch.
I like it visually, but doubt its practicality. I guess this is another 'wait and see' moment, where we all must decide for ourselves what we feel most comfortable with.
I hope that Asus (or sdbags himself ) will someday implement (semi-)transparent status bars and notification bars.
I'd make our infinities look much better, that's for sure.

I can confirm that Asus will allow us to switch between 4.1.1 UI and 4.2.1 UI modes but it requires a reboot...
As for transparent system notification bars, yes it can be done But I'm waiting for Asus to release 4.2.1 for the TF700 first although I may attempt a sneaky port of the TF300 Rom as we now have a working TWRP that solves the encrypted bootloader issues
I like the new layout with notifications you can display on the left side of the screen and the quick tile on the right side. I think it would be nice to have an option to customize the virtual key position.
I don't how many Swype lovers are here, but I certainly am, and I can't live a day without it. And the great news is its finally here on our Play Store, out of its forever Beta status! Hooray. Get yours today. For 1$ it's a steal imo.

$1 is pretty cheap but there are some frustrating issues I wish would have been solved before they pushed this out. I see no changes between the $1 app and the latest Beta version which is free.
Edit: Apparently buying the paid app allows you to disable the Dragon speech tool! They should really publicize this more (although I suspect they're getting paid by Dragon to include it so I can see why they wouldn't want to).

Wonder how it fares vs Swiftkey Flow. I bought Swiftkey once at the end of v2, got upgraded to v3 then to Flow for 0$. Was never disappointed. Best prediction I've ever seen in a keyboard, although it's been a while since I last tested Swype.
Well this is not based on prediction. No offense, but Flow is not comparable with Swype, not yet. Swyping results are much more accurate, more fast, that you'll hardly need to use the predictions or manually select words. Those who use Swype, knows how is it and how much we love it.

Another issue is that on my Note 2, the keyboard appears massive. It's only slightly bigger than SwiftKey, but it still looks oversized. Have a look.

I have been using Swiftkey for a while and using its flow through space feature. When it works it's really satisfying, but the truth is it works for less than 50% of the time only especially when I try to flow through more than 3 words. I cannot rely on something that I can't guarantee working reliably.
I bought Swype this morning and it is so much better in terms of pure text input. ALOT smooth and faster.

To resolve the issue with the lack of spacing, swipe the punctuations to the spacebar and release.

I can't say I swipe more than 1 word at a time, I find it more effective that way. I got the Swype trial and I'll test it to see how I like it. So far it seems smooth, but I only used it once for a short time.
I wish it was like Swiftkey though, I use more than 1 language and I dislike switching from one to another all the time for different contacts or even in the same convo.
I want French (AZERTY) but doesn't work ...
I'll keep Swiftkey ... It's still the best for me

Unfortunately, I can't download extra languages, it just says "We can't connect to our servers". Stuck with English now which makes it uselss as I also need Dutch...
NVM Rebooted phone and now I;m able to download extra languages!
