Returned my TF300 for the TF700 - Asus Transformer TF700

Just finished returning my TF300 and I ordered the TF700. Dumb question but is the 1920x1200 res that much more noticeable than the old 1280x800 screen of the TF300?

you should keep your tf300 until the tf700 arrives to compare side by side then you'll know

Too late the tf300 is already on its way back to amazon...

In my opinion, yes. Compared my TF700, to a coworkers TF300 - Much clearer. Not to mention a better screen (visibility in daylight, etc)

I currently have TF300 and received my TF700 today, which I have not opened yet because now I'm getting double minded as to whether TF700 is really worth the extra money or not.

Hahaha! Just fire it up and you'll notice. If you can't spot it right away, let the battery charge fully, take it to an electronics shop and compare it side by side with the TF300. If you cannot spot a difference then, my recommendation would be to return the 700, get a 300 and use the extr budget towards a good set of glasses (for the English: spectacles).
I love my recent inclination to give short answers, so here goes. Short answer: the resolution difference is VERY obvious, even (or possibly especially) on the desktop.

I sold my galaxy 10.1 3 weeks ago. As soon as I boot up tf700, I already knew it was different and my vision is far from 20:20 perhaps even with glasses....

[Q] How is the screen (compared to Ipad2 and GT 10.1)?

Hi all,
I'm looking to get one of these Honeycomb beauties soon but Im heavily doubting between the Transformer or the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 (due this summer).
First I was almost sure to get the Transformer because of price and featureset (dock, hdmi out, sd slot, usb etc.) compared to the GT. However, despite having an IPS panel, I saw some videos where the colours, brightness and contrast didn't looked that great compared to the Ipad 2 and the BB Playbook. But many other reviews are really exited about it...
So now I'm in great doubt again as the screen is one of the most important factors for a Android tablet in my opinion. I'm sure the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have a great screen (PLS) because I saw the original GT yesterday and the Ipad2, both had very bright, crisp and colorfull displays. Therefore, I would like to hear from you guys who own the Asus (or even more tablets) how you find the screen and how you think it is compared to the Ipad 2 and GT 10.1 (although not released yet). Maybe someone can make or point to some good comparison shots/test.
Thanks!
P.s. Don't mind my English, I'm Dutch
almost identical to iPad 2

Read this page, this is the most thorough testing I've come across in regards to the Transformer. Hope it helps
I don't have a galaxy tab and I don't have professional testing equipment, but I do have a keen eye for screen quality (I'm a graphic designer) and will report back later when I unbox it and compare it to the iPad 2 after getting home for lunch.

Could anyone else shed some more light ?
Everything I've read puts it very close to the ipad 2.
BTW when I saw GT 10.1 I thought you were saying G Tablet and thought to myself he can't really be asking that can he?

The choice would be much easier when I was comparing it to a G Tablet XD
here's a side by side of super pls vs ips
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/01/samsung-touts-super-pls-display-as-the-evolution-of-ips-on-smart/
the super pls display is one of the reasons i'm waiting for the samsung gtab 10.1 before i decide if i should go with that or the transformer
IQ, both screens look similar. Brightness wise, the iPad 2 wins hands down. Personally prefer the iPad2 screen.
Is Super PLS better than IPS? It probably will be. But IPS is proven in a wide range of uses.
So the next question is, are you going to pay $100 or the equivalent in your currency more for a Samsung Super PLS over the Transformer and it's IPS?

It is not IPS vs PLS for me, I'm more than happy with a IPS screen but some videos I saw of the transformer doesn't show a very crisp and high quality screen everyone is talking about. But again it is a video so very hard to judge for me, that is why my question. I rather pay $100 extra (or the same price but without a dock) when I'm sure I get a good screen. I mean, I don't have the financial strength to buy a new tablet each year. So when I buy one now I do want to last it at least 2 - 3 years without being sorry that I choose this device and not the other.... The screen is what you will be looking at all that time.
@highlander
Could you make a comparison shot?

Haha straight-on, brightness at full, that gTab screen is actually very nice, really pops. But move your head up down left right, and it all goes to hell. It's a shame, it's a great tablet otherwise.
After about 10 hours of using it I can safely say I can't tell the difference in colours/contrast/whites/blacks between the transformer and my iPad 2.
however the transformer does win in resolution and DPI slightly.
Thanks for getting back to me And is the brightness good enough too? Because Highland3r said the Ipad2 screen is much brighter. It doesn't have to be so bright that you can't see anything, but do you think it is bright enough?
(maybe you can make some pictures)

If the Transformer's screen were bad (not just comparatively a little less good), then I'd agree. However, everything is indicating that it's pretty darn good, and so I don't wager it's something one would hate looking at for a few years.
Now, add in the keyboard dock, and you've suddenly expanded the use case for the device. For someone who does any kind of long-form writing, or even lots of email, tweeting, or whatever, then that keyboard suddenly matters. Multiply that over a few years, and the productivity gains could be significant. Heck, I'm even looking forward to just being able to set the darn thing on my lap and type without worrying about heat or covering up a fan intake. Given the battery, it's also much better than just adding a Bluetooth keyboard if even you could figure out a way to hold a separate tablet and keyboard on your lap.
Not trying to convince anyone one way or the other, but for me, I can't wait to get my hands on the Transformer and particularly with the dock. I've enjoyed the Xoom I've been using, and am really looking forward to comparing the screens. I have a feeling that in that comparison for sure, the Transformer would come out ahead even without the dock.

Sorry to jump in, but I can't understand this brightness thing. The transformer is plenty bright. Mine sears my eyesballs at anywhere near full brightness in a dim room.
Additionally it has better DPI/resolution than the iPad as has been mentioned. That was the first thing I noticed about the screen.

It's bright enough in a dim room, not quite as good in a bright room though. The extra brightness of the iPad screen gives it the edge in well lit areas (it's also a bit less glarey than the Transformer).
It's personal preference though really - the iPad is a bit easier to get along with - never really have a worry that bright areas will mean you can't view whats on the screen.
This is what is going on in reviews too... one says it is a great screen, the other is not really that "positive" about it. Could someone post some pictures in brighter rooms ? Will help me a lot to decide as those are missing on the interner, or they seem to be edited a little!
Thanks!

G-Tab vs Xoom vs. Asus EEE trasnformer

Hi Folks.. I have a G-Tab ..but was wondering what the hardware spec differences were between the Transformer (which is about the same price as the G-Tab) and the Xoom which is a bit pricier.. ? Is there a reason to dump the G-Tab for the Transformer or is it the same generation with a better screen?
Thanks

Well .. It IS an improvement, but might not be one major enuff for you to replace, i personally feel the cream is the screen difference. The other factors may or may not affect you too much. (Not to mention USB)
I went with the Acer A500, since has USB host and micro usb on the tablet, so no need to buy or rely on a KB attachment. Asus Trans is nice, none the less.

Just curious, may i know whats the battery life like? Engadget review stats 7 hours but i find that fishy
You'd be wasting your money with the Xoom -- overpriced with a so-so screen, so toss that out of the equation. Iconia and Transformer are your best bets, though I think the Transformer is the better value, especially with the IPS screen. And should you decide you want the dock, it's an option (I don't, but to some that's the killer feature).
The screen on the Transformer was what grabbed me. I had it on my lap tonight, laying flat, and it looked just as good as if I had it tilted up. Brought a tear to my eye.

Seriously, we get that you've got issues with the netbook screen used on the gTab, and that just about any screen is going to be better than it.

I don't have issues anymore I solved that problem.
I think the #1 thing gTab owners who are thinking of upgrading want to know is if the screen quality is really worth the extra money. Any time the question is raised, as a former gTab owner, I'm happy to pop on here and let them know that YES, it is worth the upgrade. It is liberating to not have to worry about viewing angles, having almost no difference in how the screen looks no matter which way you turn it. I'm not rubbing it in anyone's face, just saying that if you're on the fence about it, you shouldn't be. The screen is a very important part of the tablet experience, and having a quality screen really made me realize that.

I dunno man, I use the thing for hours on end surfing the couch, and it's quite fine. If you've got one, and you're talking about "upgrading" to a new $400-$450 tab, the net cost after sale is going to be $200+ For that, if I could stand the screen (and I can - I have an iPad2 as well and the screen is nice. Whoo.) I might be better off using the gtab for several more months, until the NEXT generation tablets come out in the summer, or fall.
If you've not bought a tab, and you were going to buy one today, sure. Spend the extra $120 (if you could even find a gtab on sale now that the firesales are over, I think Woot is even finally out of stock) and get any of the 1.5 generation tabs with non-netbook screens. They'll all be better looking screens than the gtab.
If you own one and can't stand the screen, sure, go for it.
Otherwise, it's just a screen with more viewing angles. In 6 months something better will be along, if you hold out for that. Or, you'll be able to buy one of these "better screen" tabs at closeout prices.
Have my original gtab, though it's being sold tomorrow. Just got an Iconia A500 today. Dunno if it's 3.0 the Acer interface or what. This is what a tablet was meant to be like. While I'd like it to be a bit more open and not block me from installing Kindle(wtf?) etc, it's damn nice. Smooth scrolling, responsive etc. Waiting for the Transformer to be in stock for the IPS screen, and barring any horror stories from the early adopters, I'll trade the Iconia in for a Trans.
Ininitla Iconia and Android 3.0 impressions from me? Wow, a HUGE step up from the Gtablet and it's stock OS. Let price be your guide, but if you are on the fence and have the cash, the new stuff is where it's at.

TF700 and TF300T Dock?

I couldn't wait so I bought both the TF300T and its dock not expecting the TF700 to come out in a reasonable time. Surprise Surprise, it comes out a few weeks later than expected. I was wondering if anyone had used the TF300 dock with the TF700. The review on Mobile Tech Review for the TF300 said that the TF300 dock worked with the prime but not vice versa because the prime was thinner than the TF300. I know that the TF300 is thicker than the prime significantly and that the TF700 is only slightly thicker than the TF300 so the TF300 dock should work with the Transformer Infinity right?
I will be selling my Prime with its keyboard on eBay as soon as my new TF700t and its new keyboard show up, I suggest you do the same. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
Bye.

+1 -- KilerG answered correctly and definitively: the TF300's dock will not work with the TF700. I'd think long and hard if you're really that better off with the TF700 (that's a personal decision, and I know I'm very happy with the TF700 overall and that it provides pluses over and above the TF300's feature that I value highly). I am not deterred by any of the complaints in this forum. My 300 had a lot of the same issues. Either they didn't bother me or I got use to it. I was a heavy ipad user for several years and I cannot go back. I need the Infinity's higher res screen so that I can better read texts for school. I do not care about any of the other issues with the device; they should all be fixed.
Dang, I'll take a bigger hit if I have to sell my 300 dock too Spent a little over 500 on it and will probably get at best like 400 on craigslist. Oh well.

TF300 + dock or TF700

I'm still within my 30 days for my tf300, and I have to return it because of a piece of dust stuck under the display glass. I also bought the tf300 dock and find it quite useful. Im thinking of going for the tf700. But If I get the TF700, I dont think i'll be able to afford the dock. Has anyone hear tried both tabs and know if the difference is worth sacrificing the dock?
The pixelated look of the tf300 screen does kinda bother me a little.

"Only"? In my opinion the display is one of the most important things in a tablet. Or a phone for a that matter.

First things first: you are right in that the TF300 dock IS NOT compatible with the TF700 tablet! Do not heed the other poster telling you so, you will be in trouble. It was clear you knew that, but I thought I'd chime in on behalf of the less informed visiting this thread with the same question you had.
More on-topic: the keyboards are essentially the same as far as ergonomics go, so in that respect, so it'd be a matter of asking yourself if you'd miss the keyboard of the TF300 if I broke in in two on my knee at this very moment. If not, you won't miss it on the TF700. (I would, as I like the hard keyboard very much.)
As far as the screen is concerned: it's wonderful. Can;t really say anything more than that; you will absolutely notice a difference.
I cannot imagine where the reviewers who said there is not a noticeable difference between 1280x7.. and 1900x1200 gathered that from -- have they actually compared even the desktops? Sheesh.
I am definately one for high resolutions. I am trying my tf300 out without the dock, and I can get used to it. It is harder though and I can't type as much as if I had a hard keyboard.
Since a tablet is basically a touchscreen connected to an SoC package, the higher resolution does justify paying more for the pad itself.
The other thing to take into consideration is the boatloader. I know it seems weird to make that a deciding factor, but you do pay a lot for it and its a pretty serious device, so you'd expect an unlockable bootloader to be standard. (that and since I'm a CompE student, tampering is definately on my last of things to do with the device). ASUS hasn't released one yet for this tab. (I'm sure they will though)

Well, I think I'd go for the TF700, then, if I'd were you. The resolution indeed is superb, and the unlocked bootloader undoubtedly will be available in a few weeks. And as I said, I love the keyboard, though I wouldn't fancy typing longer reports or essays on it -- but that time lies in my (to my feeling already somewhat distant) past. ; )
Well after trying my tf300 for a while without the keyboard dock, I snapped them back together, and the difference is night and day. I have to choose between one great feature or the other, but not both. At least with the TF700 I can always get the dock later. Upgrading the screen is not quite as easy.

Is there a return policy for your dock? If so, you can probably just exchange it for the correct one.
I'd exchange it for insurance reasons.
I'm just thinking if something dock related went wrong with your (very expensive top of the line) tablet, and you were using the wrong dock, you warranty would be void, and you would be out of luck.
Plus the correct dock would look and fit better.

Well, if it fits.... it... .errrmm.... fits.
All kidding aside, I do think the battery in the TF201/700 dock is more powerful, but I'd have to look that one up to be sure. I believe the connectors are essentially the same, although the placement might be off a bit -- since that didn't stop you from docking the tablet, I wouldn't mind too much. The Prime's dock is compatible with recent firmware, even if slightly off-color, but I do not know what the specific reasoning was behind the TF300's not being compatible (except for the thickness of the tablet, and the resulting lack of "hinge fit").

Sheesh.

THANK YOU. My wife dropped her Prime so I'm going to hand her down my TF300 but I couldn't stand the though of loosing my keyboard as I've grown quite accustomed to it when traveling. I was on the fence and not having to drop another $150 on the dock is the deciding factor. TF700 here I come.
PS Anyone looking to buy a 201 with a cracked screen. Dig works....
I tried my tf700 in a tf300 dock. It works but the fit is terrible. The tf300 is thicker than the tf700. I would reccomend selling your tf300 dock on ebay, and buying a prime or infinity dock with the money.
Hi,
I got a tf700t and i bought a tf300t dock as there were no other docks and it looked asit wworkks. The dock fits ok (slightly loose) , and the keyboard works ok and is detected by the tablet as (DOCK EC20N 0207). But when docked the dock does not seem to charge the tablet. The tablet battry depleets andthe taab turns off while the dock reminsat 97% charge.
Anybody else having this? Or is my doock broken?

Infinity TF700 vs Iconia a700

Lot of negative comments on this forum. For those of us still on the fence who have been holding off - is there anything else out there that DOES meet everyones lofty requirements?
I've been thinking about the a700. I've seen it and used it and liked the screen, but haven't been able to compare to the TF700 screen. Anyone used both - pros and cons - know about the heat issue - had an a510 and disabled antivirus and never had any heat issues in normal use so not too concerned about that. The a700 has much better speakers as well.
Also just purchased a Toshiba Excite 7.7 - best tablet I have ever owned - insanely good Super amoled screen. Any Excite 7.7 owners that have used a TF700 and have compared the two screens - I'm doubting I could get used to anything else after using the Super amoled - but am still tempted by the TF700's super IPS+.
Don't buy Acer. Get the nexus 7 if you're low on money.
Prior to purchasing Transformer Infinity I did lots of google search everday to see what's the review like for transformer infinity. You will find many Iconia a700 reviews referring to TF700, and pretty much all I saw was a700 is not quite as good as TF700 except the price. Supposedly it gets really warm, everything lags, heavier etc.

Money is no concern. Bought the Excite 7.7 which is arguably the most overpriced tablet out there - paying for a Super Amoled + screen and Tegra 3 quad core.
Just interested in the best tablet available.
And don't buy Acer - could you qualify that with a because....
The nexus 7 is having quite a few problems - their forum is as negative as the Infinity.

Thought about that too - ipad Retina display and crapple OS vs Excite 7.7 Super Amoled vs TF700 Super IPS+ vs Acer a700 with 1080p and superior speakers and the winnner is.....
See that's where I get stuck....
Really curious to hear from those who have owned both the a700 and the TF700
Really don't like the mono speakers on ASUS tablets. I have a TF300 - louder than the transformer prime - but still lopsided and mono. Wondering, if the screens are similar, why the Acer with better speakers is not a viable choice. Or does the Super IPS+ screen so outclass the a700 screen that its worth sacrificing decent speakers? As for Acer quality - not hearing great things about ASUS quality either these days so......

If money is not an option buy them all and try them all out at the same time for the 30 or 45 day return period. Then pick your winner. I used to do that but it takes up a lot of time and stressful.
I still think the TF700 will be the winner as long as they get fixes out quickly.

I have both the Acer a700 and the Asus TF700 in front of me right now. I have had the Acer a couple weeks and I'm on the second one. The Acer has a very nice screen in fact one of the best I have seen until I got the Asus yesterday. It makes the Acer screen seem dull. I have heat problems with the Acer and it seems to lock up so I have to shut down frequently and restart.
I like the sound on the Acer along with the rubber backing make it easy to hold but all in all I like the Asus better. It's not as laggy as the Acer and it doesn't get near as hot. It lighter and a little faster. I don't like the big connector for charging sticking out of the bottom but I think its one nice tablet and match that with a dock and you have a long lasting battery.
That said the Acer is going back and I'm keeping the Asus. I hope the JB update will make it even better.
Here is a video doing a comparison of the Acer with the Asus 300T. Guess who won that battle....

I believe in CNET's reviews when they talk about the bad of a product, so if you're like me and don't want to waste your time look at my signature to see how lag the A700 is.
Hey guys, I've owned both these tablets and though i will put my two cents in
First off, my clear winner here is the infinity tab. Most of the complaints on this form are not particularly about the hardware, more app comp ability issues and such. It is a brand new Android tablet, so expect a little time before Asus can release a firmware update, they usually do (based on past history of Asus tablets). Because of that, I can forgive the few basic glitches I have run into. Let me break it down though:
The Acer does get very warm. Not hot, but very very warm. A little bit warmer than the Ipad 3. Not to hard to forgive considering most people would get a case or some protection for it (it really only emits heat from the lower right side of the tablet). However, where the Acer really loses my vote, and why I returned it, is the hardware. Yes; it has a 1080p screen, but you have DDR2 ram and only 1.3ghz processing capabilities, so because of having to push that full HD, its my belief that it just cant keep up sometimes. The Asus has DDR3 (clocked higher as well) and 1.6ghz processing (I've overclocked to 1.8 ghz) so it tends to be able render things better. Asus also puts in better firmware built in. Overall, the Asus is the winner!!

O...M...G... I'm really starting to feel you should save up some dollars by stopping taking those drugs and get yourself an anally-inclined prostitute, or a rubber doll.
The real downside to the A700 is the heat issue, or lack of heat dissipation, since the Asus can get as hot but not show it as apparent. The Acer has a much better sound system then the awful TF700 mono speaker (why Asus, why?) which is fairly important for a multimedia device. Yes, the Acer is clocked less but it appears the Asus is also having a hard time keeping up which points to the Android system needing some high res tweaking. The real setback will be the community... The Asus will have alot of support built around it while the Acer doesn't seem to have attracted many developer inclined people. This is mostly due to the panned reviews, and the overshadow that the Infinity and mostly the Nexus 7 has cast over it. It's still a good tablet for those that are less demanding which are mostly people not affiliated with this website. I have one and will stick with it since it works for what I need it for which is web surfing, watching movies and listening to music... And yes, that guy is highly annoying and played out already.
Another former A700 owner here, now running with an Infinity.
I too, will back up the feedback that other "dual owners" here have given. I really wanted to love the A700, but the heat issues made it unusable for me. Were the speakers better on the A700? Yes. Did the A700 subjectively feel rock solid? Yes. Did the A700's screen look damn good? Yes.
But the TF700 is stable. The TF700's screen looks better to my eyes. And the TF700 doesn't get insanely hot after what should be normal usage conditions (i.e. gaming).
I'll keep it short.... Get the asus TF700T.
It has been said before and i agree 100%! My Acer A700 has also been send back to the store it came from(because of the heat issue and reboots).

If you go to any forums with a new product, you will come away leaving negative, because people only post when they have issues. They are not going to sit and post all day about how much they love their tablets.
I was surprised to hear you say that about the Nexus 7. I own one and couldn't be happier. If you go to the forums looking to see what issues there are, you will definitely come away feeling negative as well.
Even on this forum, I skimmed through (my tf700 is on the way) and did not see "real" issues, nothing like the weak wifi/no GPS fiasco of the prime which is "hardware". The i/o thing seems to only affect people in very certain situations and imho is overblown. Even then I think it is fixable.
When looking for issues, I look for hardware issues and limitations.
For example, from the reviews I have read, the A700 is just a A501 with 1080p screen. The problem is that it uses the same toned down version of the tegra3. Thus, reviews complained about how sluggish it sometimes is, especially for a tegra 3. That's something I don't hink they can ever totally "fix". If they overclock it more, the heat issue witll be worse.
I know the 7.7 screen AMOLED must look nice but what is the dpi on that thing. It should be slightly worse than nexus 7 and tf700. Not as bad as the 768p 10" inchers or ipad1/2 though. For me once I stared at the Nexus 7 screen with its dpi and web surfed on it, I could not go back to my tf300 anymore (as much as I loved it), and returned it to get an Infinity.
