Signal Bars But No Connection - Motorola Atrix 2

Hey folks, i've been looking forward to getting on this phone for awhile now, and I'm glad we have the kind of community we do. I'll get to my problem right away and then give the background.
I will often have two or three signal bars, but be unable to send texts, make calls, or use data. When this happens, the signal bars and the 4g icon are white, not blue.
I had a windows phone 7 prior to this and had the same trouble, and managed to get them to send me this phone as a warranty replacement. When I continued to have trouble, I got a new Sim card too. I am still having trouble.
Many of my friends live in the area and use at&t and have no trouble, including one friend with an atrix2. Any thoughts, folks?

The white signal bars indicate that the device is not synced to Google's servers, when blue they are synced.
Make sure the "enable data" box is ticked in: settings>battery and data manager>data delivery

Thanks guys, data is definitely enabled and data saver definitely is not. This is an intermittent problem, I often have a perfectly fine connection. And I often do not, lol.

i recently had a similar issue. after factory resets and fxz, still had the problem. so after a good hour of useless att tech support they decided it wasnt on their end, that it was a hardware issue, and shipped me out another phone.

How long ago was the SIM card replaced? Even if it was rather recent, that's a possibility still. SIMs do go bad, they do have a lifespan, and can still be the cause. You might try getting a new one, that's faster (obviously) than waiting on a warrantied phone replacement. I've had mine changed three or four times over the course of a year, but I also swap SIMs and that degrades the contact points of the card. AT&T is pretty darn good about being willing to give you a new SIM.

I'm pretty sure they'll toss you the first 3 free, then its $20 every time you need one after that for the life of the 2 year contract.

I remember part of my problem was the Sims SMSC #, but I got that from att with ease

Its a long shot, but I've seen it often. Have them check to make sure you are set to correct market in att's system.

The SIM card change was only a few days ago. I'm almost certain it can't be hardware related. I mean, this issue has gone on through two completely different phones (Focus Flash and Atrix 2) from two different manufacturers (Samsung and Moto) with two different operating systems (Windows Phone 7 and Android). Not to mention the new SIM card.
Heck, the only things left that are the same are my phone number and my AT&T Address Book. I think...

Have you considered moving somewhere close enough to an AT&T cell tower where you could throw a rock at it and hit it? :silly:

That sounds like an excellent idea! I'll work on that .

Problems with service

Okay. So I got a SGS4G off of Ebay, it arrived today. I popped in my T-mobile SIM card and activated my account. 5 hours later, still no service or anything so I contacted T-mobile. They say that it's something to do with the phone, as my account is active and the SIM card works in another T-Mobile phone. The IMEI from *#06# is slightly longer than the IMEI on the sticker on the back.
unfortunately, nothing is working. Phone shows three to four bars, yet on lock screen it says "no service." When I try to make a phone call, I get another error "phone not registered on network"

How do I get this phone to work?!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
If your IMEI doesn't match that is a problem. And there is no real solution to fix it. You can also check your IMEI in settings - about phone - status. See if it is the same that is on the box there. If not - search the forum for IMEI and read up on it.
Well I did lokk under the About Phone settings, and it does match there. I realized the number from *#06# had included the IMEI SV. So I'm pretty sure that the IMEI is good, at least in that sense.
I was chatting with T-mobile last night and they weren't very helpful; only thing I learned was it wasn't the SIM card because that works in another phone. Thinking about either bringing it into a store or calling to see if someone else can help.
Worse case scenario is I just return it on Ebay and get my money back.

Go into Settings -> About phone. Post back the Firmware version, Baseband version, Kernel version, and build number.
Also, check to make sure the access point name (APN) is there. Go into Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names. You should see:
T-Mobile US (epc.tmobile.com)
Let us know if the APN is not there & we can tell you how to put it back.

Check the metal sim contacts to make sure they aren't broken.
Otherwise, the phones imei was blacklisted for either not paying their bill or being stolen.

I've had this problem before and it was caused because I was connect to an att tower... so for me I had to go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>network operators then make sure it is setup for automatic selection... and make sure auto mode for every setting is right and make sure data roaming is on. If that doesn't work then go in and select manual and scan networks and click on T-Mobile.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA
I tried to select the network, but I just got an error. "Error while searching for networks."
If the phone is blacklisted, is there any way I can get it to work? Like by bringing my receipt from Ebay into the store or something? I really like the phone, and it's in great condition physically, but if I can't use it then obviously I'm going to return it.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
I'm wondering if a factory data reset & maybe flashing back to stock might help?
Also, you could download and use an app called GPS Aids from Google Play. It has a hard reset feature that REALLY resets the phone. It helped me before.
By stock, do you mean Froyo (what came on the phone when I got it)? I'm not rooted, so the gingerbread it's running now is just the official update from Samsung via kies mini.
I've tried a regular factory reset, both through the menu and thru the hardware buttons. I'll try that app however and see.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
App didn't work. Thinking about bringing it into T-mobile to see if they can at least confirm it is a blacklisted IMEI, or figure out what the hell is wrong with it
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
The US doesn't have a blacklist yet. The main cell companies just very recently agreed to set up a system like it.
So if there is no actual blacklist, then what could be the cause of the SIM not working in the SGS4G but it would work in another T-mobile phone?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
I told you - if your IMEI is bad you are in a tough spot. There is only one person in the XDA forum that has a proven fix... ODIA. Search IMEI and you will see why I am telling you that if it is bad you do not have many options.
lol
very well then
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
Earlier he said the IMEI was ok. It's definitely an odd problem, though. I'm on the mobile app right now, so I can't look but did you try flashing a stock ROM and/or try Thomas' Gremelin Remover?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I haven't rooted the phone yet, mostly because if it is a problem that can't be fixed, I can at least return it to the seller for a refund/exchange. It's fully stock, no rooting or anything. Just the official update from Samsung.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
Got you. I was going off his OP. If it matches keep at it. Try the Gremlin Remover as Stephen suggusts. We can get you back to complete stock if it doesn't work.

I agree with Lumin. Even if it's currently stock we.can reflash stock just to be safe. Also, we can get you back to stock after you root as well if it needs to be returned.
Lumin has great guides for this stuff. Links are in his signature.

" Searching for service " problem

Hello ! I got this phone a little over a week ago and it was perfectly fine until 2 days ago. I keep getting " searching for network " even though I have signal ( and full bar ) and 4G LTE. I can't make a call or send a text but my internet works fine. I went to Verizon to get a new SIM card and it's still the same. I even download an app to turn off 4G LTE to see if it helped , nope. I searched and can't find anything for the Verizon version of the phone. Someone had the same problem with Sprint. I've tried factory reset as well. Phone is bone stock. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :good:

This sounds like my phone, sorta. I lost LTE, unless I lock it in using the phoneinfo app, from the market, but when I lock it to LTE then I don't have voice or texting any longer. I rooted my phone, but don't thing that had anything to do with it, because I wasn't getting 4G before I rooted. I haven't called Verizon to get any help yet, but I plan to tomorrow. Have you tried to lock it to cdma, using the phone info app? I am just curious if you can use voice and data on 3G, if you lock it down. If I get any words of wisdom from them tomorrow, I will let you know.

I have the same exact issue. I actually made a post about it and no one would respond. I had perfect service on mine until I rooted the phone and as soon as I rooted it it started the searching for service ****, even though it shows I have service. When it pulls up searching for service I am able to use the web but no texts or calls. I just don't understand what the problem is nor how to fix it. I have flashed all the different modems and none of them changed anything in the long run. Please someone help us!

Just because Simple might be offering LTE doesn't mean your SIM card supports it and / or there might be new APNs to be entered to get the new service.

Unfortunately it doesn't even seem that most of the customer service reps even know they are offering LTE service now, according to various posts on random forums. The ones that did mention they had seen LTE service did not mention needing to change any settings. So that leads me to think that it's either SIM card based, or possible they are rolling it out bit by bit to not overload the system all at once? Also, they need to get to providing their reps with important information a tad quicker.

Yeah I got a text from them which I'm pretty sure everyone did . I went online and checked and saw that my city is supported . so I went about to see what I had to do . I'm already on the 50 dollar plan and they said you Dont have to change service or the Sim . I also tried changing the prl to LTE only and that just gave me no signal so I'm guessing the wait game starts. Why spread the word when its not even official or finished ?

Make sure you have to use the New Generation/Version of SIM Card (White Pack instead of Green): http://goo.gl/phLjTc
No APN settings need to be changed whatsoever. I even am using the T-mobile LTE APN Setting instead of the Simple Mobile one.

FYI, I was using the Old SIM Card and the only network I could connect to was the 4G HSPA+ network. The customer service is oblivious, would keep telling you that you don't need to change your SIM Card. It's BS. Some other users did change their SIM Cards as well (the posts are on the Simple Mobile forum) and they could immediately connect to the LTE network without having to change any settings.

It may take up to a week.
If you want to transfer your number from your existing carrier to Simple Mobile, make sure that you have the following information:
1. Account Number
2. PIN for your Account Number
* Also, purchase a $50 Plan. Make sure you have the PIN ready.
Then call Simple Mobile and ask for a Number Porting/Transfer. Once the process is done, your old number will stop working. That's how you know the transfer process is done. Then you can use the new Simile Mobile number.

The customer service is oblivious, would keep telling you that you don't need to change your SIM Card. It's BS. Some other users did change their SIM Cards as well (the posts are on the Simple Mobile forum) and they could immediately connect to the LTE network without having to change any settings.

Dial *#*#4636#*#* to display information about phone.
Looks like AT&T sim from my Nexus 5X might get me on WiFi calling. Can anyone confirm?

My setup looks the same (sim previously in a pixel) but I think it's lying to us. My phone still drops to 3G during calls.
I wonder if the IMEI on your AT&T account was changed to a device that supports wifi calling/advanced LTE if they would both work?
The SIM in Essential is the LG Nexus 5X IEMI for sure
I'm showing the same with a sim from an S7 Edge. However, WiFi calling doesn't seem to be working. On my S7 I was able to make WiFi calls with my cellular antenna turned off, I can't do the same with my PH-1.
On Sprint, I needed to get a new SIM as my Nexus 6P SIM didn't work, nor did my U11 but that might be due to other reasons. (It sorta worked, but didn't like it).
Went to a store that had them in stock, threw it in, and Boom! LTE+ and crystal clear phone calls. (The earpiece really is good and loud, almost too loud).
I couldn't care less for WiFi Calling since my WiFi is much worse than Sprint LTE... Surprise surprise.
No service on voice on sprint network
My phone connected fine for four days to voice and data now all I have is data no voice it says voice out of service I can't make or receive calls at all only data I when to the Sprint store today and was there for 2hrs and still no voice only data this phone is 700 bucks and all I have is data smh essential support is no help I been begging for a full refund for 6 days now

My HTC 10 sim wouldn't work either. Sprint locks certain Sims to certain phone groups. Anyone with an unlocked ph1 on Sprint will most likely have to go get a new Sim and will most likely have to factory reset phone after activation to get it all working.

Call local sprint stores or sprint support themselves and get a new Sim. It's not the phone's fault as mine did this when I used the sim from my U11 which did exactly the same thing you're describing.
They sent me a brand new SIM card for the phone also I was at the sprint tech store where they tried another sim also so yes it is the phone

Did you try a factory reset after the new SIM?
Took a shot at having ATT try provisioning with Essential IMEI instead of LG Nexus 5X. Network not recognizing PH-1 IMEI. It only provisions UMTS, no LTE. No data network. On chat support for hours.
Update:
As reported on forums, AT&T does not yet recognize this phone's IMEI, and when force registering to network, and reading the serial number, it forces UMTS with no data service. Had to pull SIM back in Nexus 5X to reregister and provision LTE with Nexus IMEI. Returned SIM to PH-1 and now have my data back, as well the s#!+ cell signal I had since day 1.
Why do people even bother provisioning with AT&T. Everytime I interact with them, they have managed to make my problem worse.
If you have a properly provisioned LTE sim from a prior phone, just pop it into the essential and do not call ATT.
APN Business.....stuck...return label in hand.
Got my PH1 yesterday and really do like it. Really struggling with APN settings. I have Cellcom (Wisconsin based using Verizon Network), I put in my sim and change network type to global(I’ve tried most of the other options) I can go into Edit Access Point and modify the majority of the info except APN Type...needing to add mms to the “default, dun, supl, mms” or course that is grayed out. Which results in texts going thru but mms photos and group messages sit and spin until erroring out. Any ideas?
No option to add a new apn. Can only reset to default.

There a little plus button on the top of the APN screen. You can definitely add one.

No, you definitely can't. Not if your phone isn't working completely on Verizon like mine also. No plus sign, and about half the APN settings are not changeable. I was able to change one setting and got mms working.

I know this is an old post but if you have a Verizon sim, even if not active, you should be able to add a new apn. Then after saving pop your cellcom sim in.

Using 8.1 Official and on Verizon. I notice APN bearer as a double comma after HSPAR. I have seen some parsing software consider a double comma as an end of string null. I wonder if the last two entries are being seen by the phone? HSDPA and HSUPA

ATT suspending Huawei phones?

I've just sold my Mate 20X, and I put my ATT sim card in it one last time to make sure everything was fine. When I did so, my ATT service was suspended. I had to get them to re-enable my sim card. Talking to ATT, they said it's because they don't support Huawei phones anymore. I used this phone on ATT as my primary phone a year ago and never had any problems. Did I just miss this?
I'm slightly worried it's because I gave out my IMEI to a prospective buyer, but the ATT rep said there was no problem with it being blacklisted, just that they don't allow Huawei phones on the system anymore. I'm very suspicious of this, so I thought I'd check here.
I'm still using AT&T and T-Mobile on my AL00 without issues

Agreed I am using mine on ATT without issue.

Happened to me after testing my sim card in a S20 FE. When I put it back on my Mate 20 X the service got disconnected. Called AT&T they say because I need to update to a 4G phone. I told them that my Mate is 4G and they reactivated without issues. The rep that attended me didn't told me that Huawei was not being accepted anymore from AT&T, just that needed to make sure it supports 4G.
I did try it out with Tmobile later and had no problems, and the buyer hasn't reported any issues, so it sounds like just bad information. Thanks for the info!

kin USa idiots at ATT .. pss message to them from me pls !
I got a text message today from AT&T saying "we're sending you a phone. if you don't activate it, we will auto activate it after 30 days and your phone you're using now will only be able to call 911"
This is a huge bummer.
I only got that they are retiring 3G, but nothing that says they are suspending supporting The phone as they have NEVER supported the phone, so thats a crock of crap. The only thing they can do is turn off the 3g band and if your phone doesnt use 4G then your SOL. Mate 20X uses 4G LTE so they cant touch me and if they do they have alot more to answer for.
is Tmobile still going to keep supporting it?
At least from a test

That is what I thought BUT I think I found the issue. If you download an app that check the band your phone is using, you will see that for CALLS the 20x with an ATT sim card, will drop to a 3G band not LTE!
Now, if I try a TMobile sim card and make a call, the phone still shows using LTE band so looks like people with TMobile will be able to keep the phone just fine.
I recently experienced the same thing on my Huawei Mate 20x evr-l29. Call AT&t and they unlocked the suspended account and explain to me my phone is registering as a 3G device. I asked them to look at my network history and they clearly see it's using the 4G LTE network without issues. The representative at tech support said they were noting my account to escalate a ticket to not shut off my device come February. She assure me it will continue to work but we will wait and see.
So I was told that, my wife's Mate 20 x had to activate the new sim card because 3G was tied to the previous sim. Was not the case and they suspended the phone number once I activate the new sim (they also sent a refurbished S9 with the sim). I had to call customer service and escalate for them to reactivate the sim card. I'm now waiting to call their "3G Sunset Department" to try to put my phone on a white list (1-800-880-8581). Seems they are only open during business hours so have to call back then. This has not been a good experience.
So I had a fiasco with AT&T. Props to the services techs that had to deal with me in store and over the phone. They kept their cool and customer service up there. I've just been trying to keep my cool over these two days spending alot of time going between different people and then also swapping to another sim being told that would fix it.
Mate 20X is no longer supported by AT&T. In the case of new customers. Basically they have black listed the model and IMEI numbers of these phones. So when a sim card is inserted the phone line associated with it will be suspended.
To get around this you have to call customer support to have them activate the SIM card so that it will work. Phone calls and Data will work after that.
For my wife's phone I used to have unanswered calls and busy get forwarded to her google voice. With the problem above with the IMEI number being technically blacklisted I was not able to set up google voice again. Took me a couple of calls and an escalation to an advanced tech to have them set up call forwarding from their side. After that the phone works as before for now until they shut off 3G data in February.
Educational moment: After I did some searching online and also a good talk with that advanced tech I found out the reason that this phone is identified as 3G. I blame AT&T for the lack of educational material being sent out and the training of their staff on the phone.
Good article explanation: https://www.androidauthority.com/volte-att-t-mobile-1148654/
The Mate 20X is a 3G voice phone. Even though it is a 4G LTE capable phone it is not a VoLTE/HD Voice phone. Hence the reason why this phone was identified as a 3G device. So basically when the cutoff date comes in February, the phone will not be able to make phone calls or receive texts. Technically it should still be capable of using the 4G data but take this with a grain of salt because they basically blacklisted the IMEI/Model of this phone. So they could just force these to not work anymore.
Here's a list from AT&T that will still work after the change to 3G: https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf
This is their current compatibility list for unlocked phones: https://www.att.com/idpassets/image...Capabilities-Unlocked-Devices-ATT-Network.pdf
Meh, actions have consequences...

FYI (and I know this is really a late reply), this is incorrect if you were lucky enough to have unlocked the bootloader on your Mate 20 X (EVR-L29) phone (or if you can do so if the opportunity ever arises again in the future).
Thanks to someone else on this forum (posting about a different huawei phone, I've lost the original poster), I've discovered that it IS in fact possible to enable VoLTE on AT&T (ATT) if your phone is rooted.
Before making these changes attempts to make or receive calls will fail even though data and texts will be working and there is a 4g signal symbol.... and going into settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile network will not have the necessary "VoLTE calls" option to turn VoLTE on.
Simple way to enable VoLTE on rooted Mate 20 X on AT&T:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_on=true" >> /system/build.prop
echo "ro.config.hw_volte_dyn=false" >> /system/build.prop
mount -o ro,remount /
Restart your phone.
The "VoLTE calls" option will now show up, and can be turned on... after which phone calls will again work on the Mate 20 X on AT&T.
I hope this helps someone like it helped me to figure out, even though I know unlocked bootloaders are rare on this phone.
I also couldn't find another phone this size that would work on AT&T (aside from fold ones that I don't want) so really happy that this ended up working.
