IMEI number changed from rom - Captivate General

I have been a flash oholic for the past year and for the first time when i go off work today i had no service and looking into it my imei number does not match what is on the back of the phone. I have not flashed anything since yesterday and it worked very good all day until 5:00. Any ideas?

yes, been getting a lot of calls about this today, not specific to just the captivate, multiple Galaxy S phones from multiple carriers, does your IMEI end in 6400000?

Before calling customer support...

Right now running synergy 1.6.....need to call into customer service for replacement. Phone calls drop, stutter go in and out and I have updated to latest modem and tried different roms. Didnt happen in first 3 weeks of ownership but now it's a major problem as I can't carry on a convo without this happening.
Question is....will I be okay just flashing to stock rooted "no sympathy" whilst on the phone and while I wait on replacement? Mianly I don't want them to ask what build I am on while making sure it's teh most current and tell them anything incorrect from what it should be. Any ideas?

Well I think going back to a stock rom would be the first step in diagnosing your issue. If you say "Didnt happen in first 3 weeks of ownership but now it's a major problem as I can't carry on a convo without this happening", and 1.6 came out 2 days ago there is a good chance that something with the rom is causing your issues.
Also, keep in mind that many people, myself included, have been experiencing network issues and a new phone is probably not going to help you. I'm on my third phone, and still experience these issues.

my main concern is if they ask for build # what should I say...i'm on rooted no sympathy now but what is latest build/baseband.
It's been going on for 2 weeks now...multiple roms, not rom specific. It's a bit more than a network issue...I can't have a phone conversation without it dropping out at all....quite problematic for business calls.

You can get a replacement sim for free. The symptoms you describe could definitely be caused by a bad sim.

Well, on my first s3 I just followed the directions that came with the phone, and it worked. Pretty sure there is nothing special to do. On my second s3, I used the exact same sim and it worked.
Then on my third s3, the original sim would not work. I do not know why. The CSR I was speaking to said something about you can't use a sim from a different phone (seemed like she meant different model) on another phone. This didn't apply to me because I came from an DINC, and did not have a SIM at all. However, maybe this applies to you?
well got new sim and still having problems with reception cutting in and out. Unacceptable. calling in again...
Dude they don't ask for a build number. Don't tell them your rooted. Just return the phone to stock you have 5 days to send it back after you get a replacement don't stress about it. This is how the convo will go.
You: yes I need a replacement for my s3 it is having signal issues.
Ver rep: we need to try troubleshooting first. Have you factory reset.
You: yes
Ver rep: take battery out for five seconds did that work.
You : no
Ver rep: try installing advanced task killer did that work.
You: no
Ver rep: okay replacement on the way

Put full stock back on your phone. Check if the problems keeps happening and if it does just try to get a replacement from verizon.

Verizon is sending my 4th GSIII

First one was hacked almost immediately. Ended up perma-roaming with an IMEI of 0.
They replaced that with a new one. Of course they wanted to re-up my contract and steal my unlimited data. I looked the guy dead in the eye and said "No, that's unacceptable." He said "but unlimited data isn't in the system." I said "There's no 'system' to it. I take my old SIM, put in in a new phone, and walk out." Then he wanted to tell me that wouldn't work, until I grabbed my old phone, SIM, and threw it in the new phone. Then the manager walked up and said I could go.
That phone lasted until yesterday. Capacitive touchscreen starts acting up. Reboot, nothing. Turn it off for a while (CM10 was running hot), and it started working for just a couple of minutes. Restored to stock and it stopped working all together.
Took that to the store, and they were nice once they figured out that this one didn't come from online, but another store. Then they realized it was out of 14 days so it had to be a refurb. Wanted to ship it with free 5 day, but I paid $15 for it to get here by 10am this morning. Not a bad deal, over all.
Refurb arrives this morning, pull the SIM, battery, etc from the old one, and boot it up. Capacitive layer works properly, so that's good. Skip all the My Verizon and Google stuff, because I want to get everything tested. Open a few apps, good. Press physical home button....
NOTHING. Press it again. Nothing. Third time (really pressing hard this time), it pauses for a few seconds then slowly crawls back to the homescreen.
Freaking refurb. I call up verizon and they were super nice. Explained this was my 3rd phone, and they are overnighting another GS3 for free. Let's hope this lasts a little longer.
Edit: just realized this was my first actual post! I've been a member here since I got my first smart phone: an HTC Touch with WM 6!
I'll bet those VZW reps are loving to see you come through the door
It's amazing how easy it is to get into the refurb vortex and not be able to get out. As you've seen, device after device has some inconspicuous issue that requires a return. These forums are loaded with these stories.
Hopefully the next one will be the one that keeps you happy, out of the VZW stores, and out of that vortex.
A QPST backup would have kept you out of this loop lol. So sorry to hear the struggle!

Yeah, I was in IRC while switching to CM10. invisibleK tried to help me out, but this was before the EFS or QPST fixes.
I too got the IMEI of 0 prior to QPST backups (ironically I got it from a TW rom, never flashed a AOSP rom. I think it was the lean Kernal.) I tried restoring my efs.sbn but I am stuck in roaming. If I Odin back to stock and take my phone back to a VZW will they give me a new one?
I got Verizon to do an even swap form a GNEX to a GS3 because of the connectivity issues it has had...free upgrade
no wonder verizon doesnt like people rooting their phones. op's fault
First two refurbs were your fault, hopefully with this 4th one it'll act right, and you won't mess it up.

Yeah, I'd like to say it's vzw's fault for locking things down, but it happens on other networks as well. Looks like a Samsung issue.

Yeah, they should replace it, just play dumb and make sure you're on stock. But you'll end up with a return if it's been more than 14 days, and you really don't want that. Instead, just use QPST to write your IMEI to your phone. You don't need a backup, just the number on the back of the phone.

How is a faulty capacitive layer on a touchscreen my fault? A ROM doesn't make a touchscreen go bad.

[Q] My story with the SIII on Verizon, HELP?

It was upgrade time, so I decided to buy the S3. In the event of getting it, I could not get it to activate, so the next day, I took it to Verizon to do it. I rooted it and did all that jazz. Then about two weeks later (If that), I decided to try a MIUI build. Why not? It worked pretty well, then noon the next day, I didn't get service. My thought was that it was the SIM card. I took it to Verizon to find out that they had to factory reset it to fix it, I was beyond ticked off... So they did it, that did nothing. The guy told me my phone is "Fried" and that he will send a new one. He told me this last Tuesday. He said it would be at my house that Friday, It came today... (Wednesday). So obviously, I was upset that I waited 5 days in advance. I opened the box to see a refurbished Galaxy SIII with no back and no battery. Is Verizon trolling me now? I decided to go get my old S3 from Verizon and fix it myself. Any ideas on what is wrong with it? It had an R above the bar signal. I can include a screenshot of the carrier status that I took of it later.
so put your battery and back on the new phone (which is probably refurbished)....?
edit: see link below for help if you acquire your old phone. relentles beat me to it

Seems to be happening with a lot of people and MIUI. It happened to me (though I wouldn't touch MIUI) and after days of messing with it I finally took it in to verizon and they swapped it. They made it very clear that it would ship without a battery or backplate.
I found this thread the other day and I think it would have helped me if I had seen it a few weeks ago. Maybe it can help you:

I just did all that, tyvm. It works again. My only issue is that I cannot get the bootloader to unlock. In EZ Unlock, It says unlocked but when I reboot, it will say unlocked if I open it again. I think it's something with superuser.

glad you got it fixed. theres certain versions that work and some that dont with EZ unlock. check the downloads thread for the one that works. i think it was version 1.2. if you did that maybe someone has a better answer. i think there is a manual way to unlock too.

Version 1.2 is the correct one to use, at least until the dev fixes what messed up. Until he specifically posts that he has fixed it though it would be in your best interests to stay with 1.2.

I tried it. When I click Unlock, it says "Bootloader unlock failed! Are you rooted?" but I know I'm rooted
Try starting the superuser app first. I'm glad you fixed your problem. I was struggling all day yesterday but I was able to fix. When I flashed synergy it made a backup of my EFS so when I flashed miui and get that R, I just flash the zip and it works again. But before I figured that out I Odin backed to stock but realize it's not necessary anymore.

Same thing happened to me. i went to Verizon and they swapped the phone for me. I actually wanted the refurbished phone though cause my phone took a couple of falls before and got scratched. Now its back to looking new.
OP, I had the same problem after installing MIUI, and I believe it was my phones IMEI getting wiped from messing with something in the network settings. I had followed the guide to back up IMEI beforehand, so I just restored it to fix.

[Q] Restore IMEI xt912(nobody answers on the original thread)

Please dont delete this thread. There are no replies on the original thread posted on the right forum so I had no choice but posting it here.
I have a motorola Razr xt-912 that was working fine a couple of months back and suddenly one day (battery got 0) when I recharged to wake it up, it started rebooting again and again. It later occurred to me that bad IMEI or ESN make devices reboot. I checked the IMEI and it was empty, same for ESN. I went to all the famous android workshops in the city and after trying different things on it for a couple of days each of them returned saying that no one in the city can make it work. Now I googled a bit and found cdmatools but I am not able to get it started.
Now, I have the phone which no one in the city can fix. It just has to have its IMEI restored and this seems like impossible task till now. I need your help guys. I had this phone from the start and dont want to throw this beauty. Its not about its value in money any more.

Dont waste time in fixing this. I wasted a lot of time on this as well. I now use it as a tablet with Aviator Gummy ROM ( KitKat 4.4 ) installed on it. I have heard that telecom companies block your sim if you try to run it with a phone with bad/no imei. Havent tried it though. If you actually want to fix it, buy a broken xt912's board and replace it with yours. It will hardly cost around 20$-30$
thx for replying..
I'm using other gsm &cdma simcards instead of Verizon's sim card
if I replace the board with xt912 (not maxx version), would the board fit on the housing?
is there any differences between razr & razr maxx? other than battery.

[Completed] HTC One M9 no longer on sprint network after flashing custom ROM

Hey guys, i'm going to copy/paste my post from Tom's Hardware (I felt this may be a better place for the question):
Alright, so, i've been all over google the last two days and I just can't seem to find the right person/post having the exact same problem I am so I figured I'd ask myself.
So, as part as my effort to complete one of the various project I have going on around the house, I rooted and flashed custom recovery on my HTC One m9. Then, I flashed skydragon 10 onto it. This part seems to be fine and dandy.
But I just realized that I have ZERO Sprint software or options on my phone. As in, I can't update my profile and prl (the option is gone), I have no operator or mobile data, and my sim card appears to not be recognized as a Sprint SIM. How do I return those options and my phone's "identity"?
I tried various MMI codes to try and update PRL or somehow get my sprint profile back, but it just says "phone connection error or invalid MMI code". Of course, I assume I'm using MMI codes since that's what my phone's calling them (##72786# or something or other). But, right now, I don't really trust my phone.
As far as first experiences go with ROM flashing, this part has been a nightmare. It's like my phone is having an identity crisis and doesn't know that it's Sprint. I feel like shaking it and screaming "Damn it, Carl, you're not a tablet! You're a Sprint Phone!".
I literally feel 2 steps away from a solution, but I feel like I forgot to do something after flashing the ROM.
Here's what I know so far:
All my settings appear correct (APN, Phone Identity, Software Information)
If I search for Network Operators, Sprint comes up (there are 3 more with X's on them, assuming because it's not carrier-unlocked), but when I try to register, it just says the SIM is not a Sprint SIM i.e. my phone has lost it's identity.
As I'm certain you realize, I don't know much at this point. I saw a lot of answers and jargon and I know what it all means, I just don't know what to apply to my problem specifically. I haven't tried much beyond messing with settings since I'm trying to be cautious., but gosh darn (substitute the appropriate swear).
As far as backups go, I have none. I didn't realize that you could back up the stock ROM (not a single one of many guides mentioned nandroid, which I thought was the android folder misspelled, nor an EFS backup, which I thankfully, don't need... hopefully)
UPDATE: So, my phone keeps the annoying as 2am alarm I'm too lazy to get rid of, but ditches it's wireless carrier. Some priorities...
ACTUAL UPDATE: I'm going to call Sprint and see if I can have my SIM reactivated. First solution I've found that makes a little sense. Will post update later.
