GLONASS on Verizon S3? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey all, I have searched and come up empty handed. I understand the international variant of the S3 does in fact have GLONASS support. I cannot find anything confirming that the Verizon model of the S3 does as well. Can any of you confirm?
Thanks!

I can't confirm for the Verizon GS3 precisely, especially as there do seem to be some oddness with the Verizon GS3's GPS support in general (probably Verizon "fixing" things again to work with VZ Navigator hehe).
That said, though, the Sprint GS3 does seem to be largely similar to the Verizon GS3, and I can confirm at least the Sprint model very much has usable GLONASS--using a program that actually differentiates GPS and GLONASS sats (u-center GPS, available for free on the Play Store) shows almost a 50/50 split between GPS and GLONASS fixes with my personal GS3 (and some very accurate and bulldog-esque fixes).
So long as Verizon didn't "fix" the GPS functionality of their GS3 (in the same manner that neutering a cat "fixes" it), I don't see why there shouldn't be GLONASS capability with a Verizon GS3. (It'd be neat to see folks test with u-center, though, just to confirm this.)

According to GPS Test a triangle is a glonass satellite so this shows the verizon s3 can lock on to them

I recall reading somewhere that all S3 models have GLONASS support.

is this unlockable for Tmobile **urgent**

My brother is about to buy this phone from one of his buddies for a cheap amount, is this phone unlockable for TMOBILE? I already have a Samsung Vibrant T959 (tmo version of SGS)
You mean the captivate? Yes, but you won't get 3g, just edge.
Check power button and rear speaker function. They arebig problems for some Captivates.
Not to be snob, but a quick search on "unlock captivate" would give you the required results.
And to make long answer short, yes but you need to be rooted. The app by Helroz works like a charm.

Sorry. I actually did do a search on the captivate forums of "unlock tmobile" and then i went on google to try to search but most of the links didn't work, some said it costs like 35$ and I found one youtube video which helps.
I just wanted a confirmation, thank you both.
Just making sure, One click root or Super One click root also works for captivate? (i'm going to go read the stickies now , I'm not a noob trust me i'm on ICS on my Vibrant hah, just a new device, so i thought maybe the instructions etc were different?)
thanks again guys.
Super one click, yes. Sgs Unlock by Helroz, yes. And don't lose the file that is created by the unlock app. It has the info you will need to lock the phone ,if you ever have a need to.
Don't forget the thanks button
been using it on Tmo for quite some time. It works flawlessly but as someone said already, it is just Edge. No 3g. That and no official updates. With the ROMs available here, who needs official update anyways? The rooting would void your warranty
Sorry to revive this thread, but Im going to I-Wireless (T-Mobile affiliate) from Sprint, and me and my wife just bought a pair of Captives off of XDA here. Do you think I will notice a big difference in speed going from Sprint's 3G service to T-Mobiles Edge? Sprint 3G is kind of spotty here anyhow, so Im mostly on 1G whenever in a building or house. Is Edge comparable to Sprint's 1G service, or better? Im hoping its better, as the Sprint 1G service is very slow!

There's probably about the same, anyway you look at edge network is unbearably slow lol

Edge is 2g...so theoretically it should be about twice as fast as 1g.
I just switched my Captivate to Edge and it's about as fast as my Sprint 3g was during the day.

To hell with it, this is very good news for us.
One, not development. Two, I believe that's what the SIM card in our phones is for
I had thoughts it might, once I started tearing through the framework there are hints of HSPA+ all over the place.
Couldn't figure out why they would be there unless our phone supported it. Good to see it does!

The SIM card is primarily for LTE, it's kind of surprising that they actually bothered to put in the HSPA+ to be honest since it's not primarily intended to be used on GSM. I would have thought that they would have skimped on the GSM radios since not many people will use them but I guess because of the way the MSM8960 SoC works it was easy to build in all the antennas needed to support it. Pretty exciting to see that our phone supports practically every cell phone standard then.
Also, it's kind of awkward the way they split up the forums but I guess since there is no Verizon SGS3 general maybe he thought it could fit here. Also he was posting in the other thread about GSM usage in this board which also contains no development so I guess he thought it was okay.
I thought Verizon was releasing an update later on that was supposed to make the S3 a "global" device. Is your phone using the newer baseband/modems? I know a lot of people have been wonder what the update included in that regards (most knew that it contained the crippled search). I wonder if this is the update Verizon mentioned when the phone was announced.
Speaking with our business's Verizon rep about 6 months ago he said that Verizon's plan was to use dual HSPA and LTE in the phones. One service would be strictly for voice, while the other for data. This of course would allow them to do surf while talk.

I would recommend a new Verizon rep. Eventually voice will be over LTE but currently is not. Verizon has no HSPA+ so his logic is flawed. Also, all Verizon LTE phones support talk and surf while on LTE and some support on 3G like the thunderbolt.
LOL ! I don't understand why people seem to take what reps say as fact.

Our galaxy s3 also support same time voice/data on 3g.
GSM as a standard supports voice/data simultaneously unless only the legacy GSM (not even EDGE) signal is available. As long as more than one protocol is accessible, you can do voice & data.

No, probably not without some kind of hack.
Verizon's "global" phones have always been locked at the modem-level to refuse connections with AT&T and T-Mobile's US bands, to prevent this.
TeamBlackHat came up with a hack for my old phone, the Droid 2 Global, that did allow it to connect to AT&T/T-Mobile in the US, though- but Verizon will never allow this.
Edit: I am curious about the other thread going where someone got it to connect to AT&T's towers (only voice) though.
This is interesting.
I thought we'd only get EDGE data abroad.

I wanna say that you cant browse and talk while on 3g but it works fine while on 4g. So if anything I think that commercial was more so directed towards the Verizon model of the iphone and the iphone commercial you were seeing was from AT&T. This is my guess anyways.

Apparently the PQ supports simultaneous CDMA voice and Data

I download the Google offiine maps for the cities I go as on previous CDMA phones we can't get simultaneous voice and data. However, I'd noticed on a call the other day that I was getting data updates (as indicated by the arrows) as I was driving around.
I was locked into CDMA-only to save battery (we have some unannounced LTE coverage here in Silicon Valley, but in very limited areas) so I guess this means this chipset supports the simultaneous Voice/Data Revision of CDMA (then again, my CDMA is showing up as eHRPD in this market, so maybe it's a remnant of the ongoing LTE transition?).
I am in Rochester, NY....no NV here at all and I do get 3G while talking (EvDo-rev.A:8)...This phone supports SVDO which is what gives you V+D...please feel free to correct me but this is what I have understood.

Ah, thank you.
I really liked my PQ stock- it was lag-free and solid- but now that it's been rooted and I see little things like this, I'm so over not having an (easily-)replaceable battery nor a useful GSM radio. Excellent handset.
This is a nice little bonus feature on some CDMA handsets with Qualcomm SoCs and radios. Qualcomm licenses the CDMA 2000 standard so they maintain exclusivity on stuff like this and the Evo LTE's HD Voice.

Yea, that's assuming you're ON LTE.
This thread is discussing whether or not it works across EVDO/CDMA, which evidently it does... I'm curious as well, will test today. Sprint doesn't have any plans to put LTE in my city (or state) yet Puerto Rico is evidently getting the entire island covered this year.... Sigh.
Edit - I was NOT on wifi, and I was still able to transfer data over 3g while on a call. Very cool!!

[Q] Nexus 5 Simultaneous Voice/Data

Thought this may be of interest... I see other threads out there related to some older phones, but nothing related to the GNex5, so I thought I'd start one here.
I'm on Sprint, and apparently I can't do simultaneous voice and data with LTE or 3g during voice calls. Wifi seems to work just fine. Anyone else experiencing this with Sprint? What's the experience for those using T-Mobile/ATT? Stock or unlocked? I've also noticed that I'm unable to update my PRL or Profile (Network Error). I am unlocked and rooted at the moment. Did not notice this as I didn't tinker with it prior to unlocking.
Coming from Samsung GS3 and GN2 with Sprint where the LTE/3G radio is separated, I did not realize this was still a technological challenge... I went with this phone simply because it was inexpensive for the hardware and I don't have to renew my contract to avoid paying an arm and a leg. Have I just hit a "You get what you pay for" scenario, putting me (or anyone using CDMA) back 3 years in radio tech??
The phone has to support SVDO in order to do voice+data on Sprint. Very, very few phones do (the EVO 4G LTE did, the HTC One didn't, for example). It requires a special antenna configuration as well IIRC.

Unfortunately no, the nexus 5 does not support SVDO or SVLTE. This means it also will only connect to one airlink at a time - when you receive a call, it will switch to 1x, pausing your LTE, similar to older handsets.

Too bad... Found more on s4gru regarding this:
"That is what we have been told. Sprint tri band LTE devices will not support SVLTE. Whether that is due to band 26 LTE 800, band 41 TD-LTE 2600, or the combination of the two, we do not know. And the sample size is very small right now to project unconditionally into the future. But the standard expectation going forward should be no SVLTE on Sprint multi band LTE devices. Simultaneous voice and data will have to be accomplished by other means, such as third party VoIP apps and eventually VoLTE."
I are a sad sprint customer lol. Also why I went with a multi carrier phone off contract June 2014 can't come soon enough, cause I loves this phone!
This was my biggest complaints with this phone on sprint. I couldn't do it so I activated it using straight talk for att and couldn't be happier. It's unfortunate that spark phones on sprint won't do simultaneous voice and data, at least for now. But I'm not willing to compromise.

I hear that. My biggest issue with switching providers is that I average 5-6gb of data usage/mo on my line and about 12gb combined with the other two phones on my family plan (Ting told me not to switch lol). It's hard to beat the bargain offered for services rendered from Sprint. Nickles and dimes I suppose. Oh well, maybe 2015 will be the year of the phone... (Oh wait, we'll probably have 5g by then and tri-band will evolve to octa-band with the same problems )

I still have a family plan on sprint so if my data amount becomes an issue I'll go back but for now I'll sacrifice more data for fast and always available data, and at a rate of $45 I'll take it.

I have ST AT&T service. When I am on a call though, I lose LTE. It switches me to H (HPSA I think). Speed is not terrible, but would be nicer to have LTE while on a call. Do you have the same experience? If not, do you know how I can have LTE while on a call? Thanks.

Nope, that's by design. It has to do with available radios. If LTE isn't on a separate radio it can't be used simultaneously. On the upside, having less radios means better battery life overall.

AT&T LTE on Verizon Variant?

Ok so I know that the Verizon M8 is unlocked and works on AT&T. I'm also aware that HSPA+ is supposed to be as good as it gets which is fine with me.because for the most part my service is terrible on AT&T as I live in a little Podunk town that doesn't have LTE. That being said the cities to the north and south of me both have LTE. I recently acquired the Verizon M8 and have made several trips to.both places and the phone always just shows H with the signal. Today however I happened to look at my phone and it's showing LTE, not only that but everything.is functioning. Internet, sending and.receiving sms and mms, and making calls all works.
Is there something.obvious I'm missing? To the best of my knowledge I shouldn't be getting LTE and my speed test pegged me at about 8 down but signal was weak so that doesn't surprise me.

Why did you buy a Verizon M8 to use on AT&T? If you're on AT&T, get the AT&T version. There's a reason carrier specific versions are sold, and it's not only because the carriers are evil demons out to butt rape your wallet.
The network designs of Verizon and AT&T are radically different, and even if the M8 has the hardware for both the different variants are designed out of the box to only work with one.
So, even if you did get it to work with AT&T's network, who knows what kind of problems you may be experiencing. It may just be network congestion, it may be something else. Point it, it's tough to troubleshoot when you bought a device from the wrong carrier, as you just introduced a whole new crazy variable into the equation.

Slow down there captain. I'm not complaining about service issues or anything of the sort. I'm questioning whether it's actually possible that I could be getting AT&T LTE on the Verizon Variant. The circumstances behind why I have the Verizon version are completely irrelevant. I have an s5 I can use if I want and if it makes you happy it is the AT&T version.
I understand the differences between AT&T and Verizon's infrastructure, but it just so happens that the Verizon m8 has everything I need to function perfectly for me. So please take the time to actually address what I was asking instead of judging me for not purchasing the device you think I should have.
