is this unlockable for Tmobile **urgent** - Captivate General

My brother is about to buy this phone from one of his buddies for a cheap amount, is this phone unlockable for TMOBILE? I already have a Samsung Vibrant T959 (tmo version of SGS)

You mean the captivate? Yes, but you won't get 3g, just edge.
Check power button and rear speaker function. They arebig problems for some Captivates.

Not to be snob, but a quick search on "unlock captivate" would give you the required results.
And to make long answer short, yes but you need to be rooted. The app by Helroz works like a charm.

Sorry. I actually did do a search on the captivate forums of "unlock tmobile" and then i went on google to try to search but most of the links didn't work, some said it costs like 35$ and I found one youtube video which helps.
I just wanted a confirmation, thank you both.
Just making sure, One click root or Super One click root also works for captivate? (i'm going to go read the stickies now , I'm not a noob trust me i'm on ICS on my Vibrant hah, just a new device, so i thought maybe the instructions etc were different?)
thanks again guys.

Super one click, yes. Sgs Unlock by Helroz, yes. And don't lose the file that is created by the unlock app. It has the info you will need to lock the phone ,if you ever have a need to.
Don't forget the thanks button

been using it on Tmo for quite some time. It works flawlessly but as someone said already, it is just Edge. No 3g. That and no official updates. With the ROMs available here, who needs official update anyways? The rooting would void your warranty

Sorry to revive this thread, but Im going to I-Wireless (T-Mobile affiliate) from Sprint, and me and my wife just bought a pair of Captives off of XDA here. Do you think I will notice a big difference in speed going from Sprint's 3G service to T-Mobiles Edge? Sprint 3G is kind of spotty here anyhow, so Im mostly on 1G whenever in a building or house. Is Edge comparable to Sprint's 1G service, or better? Im hoping its better, as the Sprint 1G service is very slow!

There's probably about the same, anyway you look at edge network is unbearably slow lol

Edge is 2g...so theoretically it should be about twice as fast as 1g.

I just switched my Captivate to Edge and it's about as fast as my Sprint 3g was during the day.

New firmware to play with, anyone?

I'm holding in my hands a Telus Fascinate T959D, quietly launched yesterday. It replaced my I9000M that died, which replaced my Captivate that I couldn't get unlocked back at launch.
Despite the "Fascinate" name, it's really a Captivate, in a Vibrant case with a VZW Fascinate black screen surround instead of the Vibrant/I9000's dark chrome.
I'm willing to bet the ROM is 100% interchangeable with a Captivate though. 850/1900/2100 HSPA radio, 4 capacitive buttons, no FFC. Besides the form-factor, it does differ from the Captivate in one respect, as it has a working FM radio.
Oh, and absolutely ZERO bloatware, there's not a single bit of Telus-added software on this device.
ROM on my device is "JJ2".
GPS works well, but we all know how much that means, since it's new.

Is hsupa activated? if so this is the break we could have all been waiting for with the rogers captivate.....Can you confirm?
It is activated. Not exactly sure if its full blown yet, but I know major cities have it...like birmingham, atlanta, new york....etc...

HSUPA active on the Telus unit? Absolutely, same as it was on the Bell I9000M (Bell and Telus share the same "HSPA+" network, and they don't even HAVE a 2g GSM/EDGE network, not even for voice).

Any quick how-to on how to dump it?
I dont know how to do a system dump.....I know you use Odin 3 to do it.....You should try and contact designgears in the development subforum....if anyone can help and get this working on a cappy its him. Have you used the speedtest app to test upload speeds? If not do so to confirm hsupa.... You should get upload speeds over 400kbs
My best Speedtest upload speed so far is 2904, running on the 1900 band at home. I'd say the average is about 2k on Telus. In comparison, my WiFi upload speeds max out at 3600 (on a 20Mbit fiber connection, Wireless N).
I'll test it again on Monday at work, where I typically only get 850 band reception, but it's pretty clear it's not crippled.
Wow this is really good news.....you should get this thread moved or repost it in the development section....you might get flamed but you'll get the attention of the developers. Everyone has been waiting for a way to activate hsupa on the captivate without having to use a i9000 rom. I know I have. They work great but it has its bugs

[Q] Will Inspire 4G Be Able To Be Unlocked

I am currently with T-mobile, due to having bad credit I can't switch over to ATT which sucks. So I was wondering if anyone knew if this phone was going to be able to be unlocked because I really want to get it as soon as it comes out and use it on T-mobile. T-mobile phones suck and I've fallen in love with the Inspire 4g.
It will only work on edge on tmobile but I'm sure there will be a way to unlock it soon after release.

Really? T-mobile has the G2. That thing is sweet. They also have the MT4G, which is a mean CM7 machine.
I think both of those are as good as the Inspire, if not better for my purposes. But hey, the Inspire/DHD/Ace/Spade is a solid device that will surely be a winner.
Yes, I think it will be very easy to unlock the Inspire for use on other networks if that's what you want to do. As mentioned, it would yield edge-only data on T-Mobile.

The G2 is ok but all my friends have it so I want something different. Plus I like the 4.3 inch screen, I'm tired of this little screen on the MT3G, time for me to finally upgrade.

Moving from ATT to new carrier need help with carrier and best android OS phone?

I am currently on a T-mobile G2 unlocked for AT&T... I am going to be switching over to sprint, T-Mobile or MetroPCS and would like your help knowing which carrier is best in your own opinion? and which android phone i should get on this carrier.
for the carrier
Unlimited data with no overage
( I am use to edge network so even throttled 3G would be nice and there is no 4G here yet anyway but there might be in Future)
Good service
(I live in the New England area, USA and AT&T sucks here. I cant even send out text messages half the time.)
I am leaning towards sprint but I got a friend at T-mobile who will help me out and plus i can keep my old phone and MetroPCS is so cheap... so... i don't know who to choose?
Things i am looking for are (but not necessary) are
Ease of root (with lots of ROMs <3 CM 7)
Physical Keyboard
fast Dual Core CPU
Big screen (pretty Necessary specially if no physical keyboard)
3D capability
I love my G2 so much that I limit my self to edge speeds...
If there is a better time to get a phone i can wait or if something is coming out that looks better then whats on the current market.
I would love your IMO on a Android OS phone .
Thanks for reading this ahead of time and i Appreciate anyone opinions.

Only AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM.
Note: There is also Simple Mobile but they use T-Mobile as their backend.
Check Wikipedia for a list of GSM providers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_mobile_virtual_network_operators
Sprint is the best hands down. Compared to t-mobile, my bill is half of what it used to be for my family and has twice the coverage. I own a kyocera echo and it
Is the best phone I have ever had!

I was actually at the mall the other day looking at this phone. It seemed pretty cool and kind of unique! I never owned a Kyocra before but Seems like a really cool phone! I got your pvt message about it. Only real downside i can see is the signal core CPU really looking for dual core or waiting for quadcore to come out.
I use alot of process heavy applications. but I will play with it more the next time I go!... Sprint is really looking like the winner now!
Only thing that scares me about the Evo 3D is i remember they had some type of weird tracking software built in to the framework?... I could be wrong but i really don't like that...
My favorite story about Sprint was my friend called them saying he had horrible service and they sent him a small Cell phone tower that connected to their board band connection! absolutely free!
and using it will not interfere with their minutes!... that's just awesome to me!
I didn't see how Metropcs's wireless network is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...work_operators. I did add it to the wiki though hopefully someone will fill it in.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/careful-what-you-do-on-your-evo-3d-you-are-being-watched/
Here is the article i found on Evo 3D.
Sprint is the only one of the big four to offer unlimited data, so sounds like that decides it for you, at least amongst them. I know nothing about regional carriers.

unlocked g2x

i just unlocked my tmobile g2x to att works fine but doesnt pick up any 3g or 2g can someone please help me on what im doing wrong thanks
you aren't doing anything wrong. the g2x has the required band for 3g on att but it isn't activated even when the phone is unlocked.
you need to assign the apn information for 2g, 3g won't work (it doesn't have the bands)
You'll be stuck only with 2G unless you use the guide in the development section and select the bands for att 3G service.
Use google to find the apns for the att data. Its something like wap.Cingular.com or similar.

As far as I'm aware, there is no such guide, as there are no AT&T 3G bands on this phone. If you know of such a guide for the G2X (specifically) it would be nice to share.

I C... Yeah, a new thread on a theory based on a reference document. Great idea, great to see people working on it, but hardly a thread to recommend to the original poster, to whom the answer is essentially still and likely to remain "no, no 3G on AT&T with G2X"...

[Q] Can I Use The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket On T-Mobile?

I have a T-Mobile Pay As You Go plan so I am wondering if I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and get it unlocked through eBay if I would be able to use it with my T-Mobile SIM card? I don't need the 4G LTE on it as I would just use my wireless Internet if I ever needed to get on the Internet. I use this phone mostly for texting, phone calls, and games. Do not use it for the 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks for any and ALL help!
Oh and if I unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile do I need to root to flash any kernels, etc? Looked for answer to my question but was unable to find an answer.
ATT for the win jaja
Yes you do need a root to flash new kernels
Edit: and yes you can use it with any GSM provider if you get it unlocked hopes this answers your question

Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate it. What kernels would work the best and if I root it can I still get the OTA Official update of ICS when it gets released? I believe there is somewhere that will help me root it correct? THANKS again!
Awesome! Thanks for the info.

Hi, As for my understanding, once you rooted, the OTA will stop working...
Below thread might be helpful for you regarding what is needed to use SR on Tmobile:

I was looking at running the ATT Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile for a friend.
I found out the Captivate would only run at "Edge" speeds on T-Mobile. Not 3G or 4G.
Might want to check to see if it would be the same for the Skyrocket.

You are correct, ATT and tmobile have different bands in which their phones operate, so you will only get EDGE speeds at most. Also to clarify ATT's 3G data operates over 850/1900Mhz spectrum and tmobile 3G operates over 900/2100Mhz so you really can't use 3g/4g at all unless you go with another carrier like Straight Talk where they use tmobiles and ATT's towers so you recieve 3g on your smartphone. Good luck !

WOW! Thank you all for such much information, I LOVE this forum. As for the 3G honestly some may think I am crazy but I honestly don't care about the 3G/4G stuff. I use my phone for talking and texting, I never use the data plan. In fact I just don't have a data plan so it honestly don't matter to me. I just wanted to make sure my phone would be useable without having to root it, change the kernels, etc. to make calls and text family & friends.
So thank you ALL for all your information and taking the time to share it. It is very much appreciated!
The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.
