Which method are you using to get root and CWM recovery? It sounds like you are trying to use the old method of installing the modified 3e recovery and then using an update.zip. There is an updated way to do this with AT&T 2.3.6, and the old way doesn't quite work the same anymore. Let me know which method you're trying so I know where to direct you from there.
EDIT: Since I'm pretty sure that you are using the old method from stock Froyo to get root and CWM recovery, take a look at this thread. It's a how-to that explains most of the ways to get root and CWM recovery on 2.3.6.:

It sounds like the old way using an update.zip. In Froyo, we used to replace the stock recovery with a 3e recovery that would allow unsigned files to be flashed. Then we'd flash an update.zip that contained CWM recovery. Just curious, how did you root, and is this AT&T Gingerbread?
I'd read through that how-to thread I posted. If you can use Heimdall or Odin, there are some quick ways to get CWM recovery. In that thread, I've also outlined how to do it yourself on stock 2.3.6.

To get Gingerbread with CWM recovery for flashing roms, you could flash Option C or Option D from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Or, if you prefer Heimdall, qkster has some nice one-click packages. There are links for those in the first thread I gave you.
If you already have root (How did you root, again?), then you could just flash one of the Gingerbread kernel / CWM recovery packages from here.:

Before you go any further, we need to investigate something. First, let's confirm that you are on AT&T 2.3.6, because most of us haven't found or made a working one-click program to root stock 2.3.6 directly. Can you go to Settings / About Phone and tell me what is listed under "Baseband version"?
If you can do that to confirm that this is AT&T 2.3.6, I'd really like to know what program you used. Or did you root the phone before you were on Gingerbread?
Any of those links that I've given you in the last post will give you CWM (clockwork) recovery to install different roms. An easy way would be to do Option C or Option D at this one. Either one will do. Here's the link again.:

Thanks Silver, perhaps I was not being complete in my question? I know that there are both, but my question was specifically related to rooting. In his post " *Put the Superuser .zip file on your internal SD" from these instructions" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194".
I think it means that you put the. Zip file on the phones internal memory & NOT the removable SD card?
Yes you are correct sir
Thanks SILVER.... it just seemed a little ambiguous, and for a noob, that could be dangerous. ...you were "thanked" .
Uhm, on Melvin's post of Oct 19th...he says to put the Superuser zip on the INTERNAL SD....BUT on Copperhed's post of Nov 10th....he says to put the Superuser file on the EXTERNAL SD? I would imagine that there is something important about where it is located on the phone?
I was pretty sure that I was not losing my mind, I just had to find where I saw the discrepancy

The GS2 doesn't support booting recoveries via fastboot, so the only way to root (short of using a rooting tool) is to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM via Odin, and then root the system from within the recovery. You can restore the stock recovery if you want, but I don't know of any other clean methods to root.
Also, you are aware that there is an official (Samsung provided) Jelly Bean ROM for the GS2, right? While that doesn't get you "up to date", it at least gets you on a 4.x stream, which will dramatically improve app support on the Play Store.

There may be a way to install a pre-rooted image from Odin, but most folks do it from a recovery. Fortunately, if you can figure out how to just install the recovery, it will be able to root whatever you have installed, and is a heck of a lot safer than messing with the OS image. Unfortunately, how that happens depends on the recovery, but in most cases it will over you the option to fix the su binary when you reboot.
I won't repeat the steps here, as there are several guides for installing recoveries via ODIN. I will point you to the TWRP repository, however -> https://dl.twrp.me/skyrocket/
So let me get this straight, if I flash a normal stock Rom from a recovery it will automatically root it? What is a recovery? Is that the same thing as download mode? I'll try to find a thread, but of course if u could post a the ad link I would appreciate it.

So here's the deal. I'm running CM9Alpha13. And while I love having my phone rooted and playing around with it, I was really only interested in getting ICS for my phone. No I know I'll miss Francisco.Franco's kernels and I'll miss Koush's awesome ROMs but I just really want a stable ICS.
So my question is how long before I can root my ICS if I do the official downgrade to GB and Upgrade to ICS?
Any guestimate would be great!
Thanks in advance.

Confirmed that this worked on Google issued phone (same as T-Mobile version). The following is the order I used to come from CM9 Alpha 11:
1. Backup using Titanium, reboot to recovery.
2. Use CWM to flash stock 2.3.6.
3. Use CWM to flash stock ICS 4.0.3.
4. Wipe all user data.
5. Install the linked superuser through CWM (I had previous tried older and newer versions, which did not work).
6. Reboot phone, go through setup, download Titanium, and restore. Phone is definitely rooted (otherwise Titanium is unusable). I did not try to update the su binaries and will avoid doing so.

Then fastboot boot recovery and flash the latest su zip. Even if you flashed the custom recovery it would be overwritten when you boot up the os.
Hi,
I am new to this forum.
My captivate is on stock firmware UCKH3 (2.3.4)
I think I've done something wrong while flashing a custom kernel.
The kernel was flashed, the phone is booting but I am unable to get into the CWM recovery. Tried button-combo and also from ROM manager but no luck. Hence I am unable to flash any roms in the forum except odin tar's!!
I would like to try ICS roms but I couldn't find odin packages.
Please help me with this issue or post a link which may help my case.
Thank You,
Pradeep Kiran
Which kernel did you flash, and what combination are you attempting?
were you able to get into recovery before .?.
I had to use ADB to get me into recovery on my i897. If you dont know what ADB is, look it up as i did.
Careful with Odin, it will brick ur phone, but no worry many ways to get unbricked. I had to make a jig. you can order one, same price either way, just if you make one check the ohms, needs to be 301k resistance.

Whoops, at least you got it going again :good: maybe you can take a shot at a different one click .jar
The one click jar that I used in download mode was SamsungCaptivate-SGHi897-UCKB2-Rooted-One-Click.jar *which you need to be rooted so use Root Checker App to make sure you are rooted if not Super One Click v 2.3.3 Short Fuse :good:<---{there needs to be a huge thanks button here}
If that does it from there reinstall Rom Manager and enjoy cwm Recovery, and I flashed Devil 1.6.1.zip from cwmR :cyclops:

I don't know if I have tried the Ace Think Tank. I have managed to Unlock my Bootloader and download CWM. Through CWM I downloaded and installed this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461
But its NOT ICS which is what I'm wanting to do.
As for the methods I have tried they are:
Ace Advanced Hack Kit

Poot
And a few more I am unable to think of.
It took me forever just to learn how to install CWM but through Ace Hack Kit I was able to by going into options.
I've also had the issue of my computer not reading my phone while it was in HBoot mode or recovery mode.
So thats where I am now and I now I am trying to upgrade to ICS.

Okay, you need some clarification.
AAHK1 is retired and unsupported. It won't work for you without some fiddling. It's used to get S-Off. Since you already unlocked your bootloader, you don't need it to flash a custom ROM.
The stock firmware you tried to flash won't be ICS. DHD stock firmware ends with GB.
The custom ROM you tried to flash (as well as any other custom ROM) requires that you: 1. flash it in CWM. 2. fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

Okay so now I understand why AAHK1 is not working for me. I did not realize that it was unsupported. Also, the only reason I flashed the DHD stock firmware is just to get my phone rooted since I was unable to figure it out myself. Do you know of a ROM that has ICS that I can flash or do I have to install the original stock ROM without it being rooted then root it myself and install another ROM that has ICS?
I've learned how to flash a custom ROM. I have CWM downloaded thanks to youtube and the video also showed me how to flash a ROM. So I am able to do that.
You don't need root to flash a ROM, just an unlocked or S-Off bootloader. You have an unlocked one, so that works. Flash a ROM from CWM, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip. The Ace Think Tank thread has links for that.

Okay, I already posed in a couple of places and have gotten limited responses.
So I have a Samsung Galaxy Centura and pretty much no Odin3 access, and a microSD card, a stock ROM that is not signed, and I need it signed, preferably by Samsung. I heard that 3e ROMs can only work if the signature verification is disabled or you have the properly signed ROM. I have the ROM, and as previously stated, no CWM or other custom recovery. I need to fix this phone and my only option is through the SD card.

I can get it into DL mode, it's just that I can't use it because the public computers I'm using don't allow you to install drivers.
I just need a way to disable signature verification or get a ROM signed by Samsung. I have the stock ROM for the phone but I still need it signed to continue.

Yes it's a backup of a rom...! You can't flash this file via 3e... You can't flash backups by 3e... You need cwm recovery...
You can a flash a cwm via download mode or (i think) via adb shell (your device should be rooted)
Solved!

Regardless, I sent the phone back to the manufacturer. Hopefully if they can't fix it I still might be able to get a signed ROM from Samsung. I've contacted them and am expecting a return email.
