How to root my Skyrocket 2.3.6 version - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I can use Titanium backup to freeze things to make the battery last longer? I am about to go back to a iphone if I can't get this battery life situation resolved.

Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526 you need to use that method to root 2.3.6 instructions and files needed are in that thread. Its very easy

Silver03wrx: any idea if we can safely unroot with SuperOneClick 2.2 on 2.3.6 if we rooted with it on 2.3.5?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App

I doubt it works. It wont root 2.3.6 so i dont see why it would unroot. If you want to unroot probobly have to odin the stock 2.3.5 tar and take the ota update to unroot

Noob clarification re "internal sd" from Melvins Root guide
When he says " your internal SD",that means NOT the SD card?.. right? Sorry for the request for clarification!

There is an internal 16gb sd card that is not removeable. There is also and external sd slot that is r emoveable

Thanks Silver, perhaps I was not being complete in my question? I know that there are both, but my question was specifically related to rooting. In his post " *Put the Superuser .zip file on your internal SD" from these instructions" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194".
I think it means that you put the. Zip file on the phones internal memory & NOT the removable SD card?

Yes you are correct sir

Thanks SILVER.... it just seemed a little ambiguous, and for a noob, that could be dangerous. ...you were "thanked" .

Uhm, on Melvin's post of Oct 19th...he says to put the Superuser zip on the INTERNAL SD....BUT on Copperhed's post of Nov 10th....he says to put the Superuser file on the EXTERNAL SD? I would imagine that there is something important about where it is located on the phone?
I was pretty sure that I was not losing my mind, I just had to find where I saw the discrepancy

The GS2 doesn't support booting recoveries via fastboot, so the only way to root (short of using a rooting tool) is to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM via Odin, and then root the system from within the recovery. You can restore the stock recovery if you want, but I don't know of any other clean methods to root.
Also, you are aware that there is an official (Samsung provided) Jelly Bean ROM for the GS2, right? While that doesn't get you "up to date", it at least gets you on a 4.x stream, which will dramatically improve app support on the Play Store.

There may be a way to install a pre-rooted image from Odin, but most folks do it from a recovery. Fortunately, if you can figure out how to just install the recovery, it will be able to root whatever you have installed, and is a heck of a lot safer than messing with the OS image. Unfortunately, how that happens depends on the recovery, but in most cases it will over you the option to fix the su binary when you reboot.
I won't repeat the steps here, as there are several guides for installing recoveries via ODIN. I will point you to the TWRP repository, however -> https://dl.twrp.me/skyrocket/

So let me get this straight, if I flash a normal stock Rom from a recovery it will automatically root it? What is a recovery? Is that the same thing as download mode? I'll try to find a thread, but of course if u could post a the ad link I would appreciate it.

How Long Will a Root for ICS OFFICIAL Take

So here's the deal. I'm running CM9Alpha13. And while I love having my phone rooted and playing around with it, I was really only interested in getting ICS for my phone. No I know I'll miss Francisco.Franco's kernels and I'll miss Koush's awesome ROMs but I just really want a stable ICS.
So my question is how long before I can root my ICS if I do the official downgrade to GB and Upgrade to ICS?
Any guestimate would be great!
Thanks in advance.
Jon
I am sure it wont take long...just give the devs a day or so to play with things and get everything worked out.

Confirmed that this worked on Google issued phone (same as T-Mobile version). The following is the order I used to come from CM9 Alpha 11:
1. Backup using Titanium, reboot to recovery.
2. Use CWM to flash stock 2.3.6.
3. Use CWM to flash stock ICS 4.0.3.
4. Wipe all user data.
5. Install the linked superuser through CWM (I had previous tried older and newer versions, which did not work).
6. Reboot phone, go through setup, download Titanium, and restore. Phone is definitely rooted (otherwise Titanium is unusable). I did not try to update the su binaries and will avoid doing so.
any way to root with something like superoneclick?
I'd like to avoid flashing custom stuff on it. just need root.

Then fastboot boot recovery and flash the latest su zip. Even if you flashed the custom recovery it would be overwritten when you boot up the os.

Update will remove root and will fail if you have CWM installed, it requires stock recovery to apply (this is of course if you go the official update route).
Return to stock recovery
So how do I return to stock recovery from cwm? I'm not so concerned about this update, but I'd like to use stock ics when it comes out. ( keeping root, of course)

Flash stock recovery with ODIN, make sure there is not a kernel in the .tar or the flash counter will trip.

If you get familiar with ODIN (and heed the same warning I posted above) all you end up having to do is flash CWM recovery and then install superuser via an update zip file. You may have to flash it "2 - 3 times to get it to complete without error" I am not sure why it does that but I followed the instructions around here somewhere.
Many thanks to you guys! I had the same question.

Which method are you using to get root and CWM recovery? It sounds like you are trying to use the old method of installing the modified 3e recovery and then using an update.zip. There is an updated way to do this with AT&T 2.3.6, and the old way doesn't quite work the same anymore. Let me know which method you're trying so I know where to direct you from there.
EDIT: Since I'm pretty sure that you are using the old method from stock Froyo to get root and CWM recovery, take a look at this thread. It's a how-to that explains most of the ways to get root and CWM recovery on 2.3.6.:

It sounds like the old way using an update.zip. In Froyo, we used to replace the stock recovery with a 3e recovery that would allow unsigned files to be flashed. Then we'd flash an update.zip that contained CWM recovery. Just curious, how did you root, and is this AT&T Gingerbread?
I'd read through that how-to thread I posted. If you can use Heimdall or Odin, there are some quick ways to get CWM recovery. In that thread, I've also outlined how to do it yourself on stock 2.3.6.

To get Gingerbread with CWM recovery for flashing roms, you could flash Option C or Option D from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Or, if you prefer Heimdall, qkster has some nice one-click packages. There are links for those in the first thread I gave you.
If you already have root (How did you root, again?), then you could just flash one of the Gingerbread kernel / CWM recovery packages from here.:

Before you go any further, we need to investigate something. First, let's confirm that you are on AT&T 2.3.6, because most of us haven't found or made a working one-click program to root stock 2.3.6 directly. Can you go to Settings / About Phone and tell me what is listed under "Baseband version"?
If you can do that to confirm that this is AT&T 2.3.6, I'd really like to know what program you used. Or did you root the phone before you were on Gingerbread?
Any of those links that I've given you in the last post will give you CWM (clockwork) recovery to install different roms. An easy way would be to do Option C or Option D at this one. Either one will do. Here's the link again.:

[Q] Rooted S3 to JB - restore to clean or copy over?

Hello all,
I bought my S3 already rooted and unlocked but with the 'stock' rom (I535VRLF2 base / IMM76D.I535VRALG7 build). It has CWM 6.0.0.8 installed, and I locked out OTA updating by freezing FWUpgrade and SDM with Titanium Pro.
Now that JB is out, I would like to upgrade and am wondering the best way to proceed -- restoring my phone to out-of-box condition and then going though the entire rooting/unlocking process OR (if possible) loading the new JB ROM over what I have. Although I have done a lot of messing around with my HP Touchpad and installing of nightlies, I had done ZERO playing with the S3, so I really feel like a novice and was hoping for a thread that would be a step-by-step guide for the first time I do this (I did search but didn't find exactly what I was looking for).
I have no problem in erasing what I currently have on the phone -- in fact I would like to do a complete erase and reinstall of programs now that JB is out (who knows what is lurking in those folders - plus I have been having trouble with wireless tethering).
Can anyone suggest the best way to go? In the end I would like to have JB on my S3 with the 'stock' ROM, unlocked and rooted so that I can use Titanium Pro to freeze bloatware and use wireless tethering for rooted phones.
Thanks and an early Merry Christmas to all!

Try Open1your1eyes thread in the dev section, that has everything you need to upgrade to JB. That thread has info on how to flash the Verizon VRBLK3 rom. There's a version that formats your data and a version that leaves your data intact.

Hi SlimSnoopOS,
Yes, I did find that thread and also one (with a video) that covered rooting and unlocking the stock JB ROM. Can I use the one you mentioned with the ROM that wipes your data and installed CWM (VRBLK3 Bootchain with ClockworkMod Touch Recovery 6.0.1.2) with my phones current state, or do I need to remove the current CWM and lock/unroot it? Or do I unfreeze the update files I froze, do the OTA, then do the steps in that thread? That is what is confusing to me. I don't want to brick it.
Thanks
Frank
You can install it the way your phone is now. Now that I look at it though, the VRBLK3 rom included is the "no data wipe" version.
Edit: ok, looking back at it, both of his threads only have the "no wipe" version. Since you want to format the internal sd card as well to clear out your excess folders, how about you follow section 5 of DroidStyle's guide in the dev section to reset your firmware to either VRALF2 or VRALG1 then OTA to JB.
Do you care to be rooted/unlocked afterwards?
Double edit: I found a full wipe data version! This wipes your internal and external sd card so backup your data! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
So, what would you like to do? Be on factory VRBLK3 JB with no root (wipes internal/external)? Be on VRBLK3 JB with root?

Hi again,
OK. But if I read it correctly, the first two ROMS (downloads 6 and 7) do not keep your data -- I think only 8 (which says NO DATA WIPE) keeps what you currently have. I was thinking of downloading ROM 6 which will give me CWM 6.0.1.2, as that is what I have used before and that is what is currently on the phone.
But here again is where I am confused. I do Step 1 and flash the #6 ROM. Then it says in Step 2 to install a Custom Recovery. And if I want CWM, I need to download and flash download 6. But if I flashed download 6 in step 1, why do I have to do it again? What am I missing?
Also, the ROM is a .tar.md5 file. Do I need to unpack it or does Odin know how to work with that file? I did find the Odin Flash Guide (http://androidfirmwares.net/Guide/Details/9) but wish it was a video...

The BEST way to go if you're already rooted on VRLF2 stock is to download OTA Rootkeeper, back up your root, unfreeze fwupgrade and sdm and then take the OTA.
Once the OTA updates your phone, restore root from Rootkeeper, and unlock your bootloader again using E-Z Unlock 1.2 (the .apk is around here somewhere).
With this method, there will be no need to flash, odin, trip any counters, etc.

Best way without any issue in the future is flash full rom with root injected. So VRBLK3 with root is the best way to go. no wipe version is not recommended, it caused some issues. Just remove your external sdcard then Odin the K3 with root. I recommend the pre-rooted Root66 version from mrRobinson. It identical to stock only with root.

I would like to end up with a rooted, unlocked JB S3 that has been cleaned up. I don't care what I might lose on the phone -- I can download the apps and music I currently have on it, and any settings I changed in ICS I can then find and change in JB. All contacts/calendar data and phone numbers will come back once I install gmail. And losing my SMS messages are no big deal (I need to clean it up anyway and this is the best way). All my pixs have been moved to my PC.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. If I go this route, I assume the OTA will not delete any extra folders, data, etc. If I do a factory reset, will that take care of completely cleaning up the phone? Will CWM be removed? Or does Rootkeeper and E-Z Unlock bring this back?
I would like to end up with my S3 unlocked and rooted, running a 'stock' JB ROM and being able to freeze bloatware/fwupgrade and sdm, but completely cleaned up so no 'residual' programs/files/folders from ICS are messing up JB. Just like on my PC, when I go from one OS version to another, I always do a clean install to pitch the crap and make sure nothing old interferes with the new OS.

Thanks. Your thread looks easy to follow if I go this route. What program is needed to uppack the .7z file? And regarding the 'flash counter', when I booted to download mode, I do see a yellow triangle on that screen (that warns against downloading ROMs). Does this mean I tripped the counter? I never see that triangle any other time (however under status in settings I do see Dvice Sattus as 'modified'). Do I need to do anything before following your steps if indeed the counter has been set?

And regarding the 'flash counter', when I booted to download mode, I do see a yellow triangle on that screen (that warns against downloading ROMs). Does this mean I tripped the counter? I never see that triangle any other time (however under status in settings I do see Dvice Sattus as 'modified'). Do I need to do anything before following your steps if indeed the counter has been set?

Does your computer not allow you to unzip the file? You should be fine with 7zip, it's free and open source. Once unzipped, the file should already end with ".tar" or ".tar.md5" and Odin will flash it just fine.
Tripping the flash counter is rather irrelevant since you can reset it anytime with Triangle Away. Also, you have to flash a non-Samsung file via Odin to trip the flash counter...which would be like installing CWM or TWRP recovery using Odin. Neither of which are Samsung official, make sense? I think the counter status is actually on the top left once fully in Download. Mode. That prompt you see in download mode is always there, just press volume up to proceed then follow the directions in the link.

Sounds like SlimSnoop is leading you down the right path. I agree with his choice of thread to share with you and advice about the trip counter. Someone mentioned before to take out you external SD card. Are you trying to erase extra folders and files just on the Internal SD, or both the Internal and External?
and Slim, are you sure this process will take care of both? I see your post above, I've just had problems with this in the past. If this works I might do it too!

My Win7 OS does not know what to do with a .7z file so I will get 7zip.
And OK on the counter.
I want to install CWM (not TWRP) and do it via Option 2 (I don't want to install GooManager). Do I open a CMD window in Win7 (with admin privs) to type in adb shell? Or is that a command entered into Odin?
Thanks again.

I want to clean up everything. I guess I can just format the external SD if the suggested process does not do it....

That's done in a CMD window, not Odin. The adb command comes from the Android SDK, so that needs to be installed for that method to work.
Another option would be to install the "Terminal" app on your phone, run "su" to gain a root shell, and then enter that command on your phone. That option makes typing the command kind of a pain, but at least you won't need to download and install the Android SDK.

I'm not sure now that you ask lol maybe I'm misinterpreting what MrRobinson posted? But it does wipe internal storage. I think my misinterpretation is because it says it wipes "/sdcard" which now that I look at it more clearly, it just means internal storage.

I am not knowledgeable in adb commands, I would just install EZ Recovery then install CWM and call it a day. Yes, I'm that lazy BUT this guy looks like he is way more informed on adb:

That's correct. You can just do a wipe from settings and it will return you to stock. Flashing the entire rooted K3 image is also a good alternative, as suggested by others.

Well, I have a problem. I downloaded root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3.7z because I wanted to do a clean install. I also downloaded and installed 7zip, then told it to unpack the above file.
What I get is a zip folder labelled Stock Root - VRALG7 - ODEX.zip. Why would this not be VRBLK3? Is it a mis-labelling or is the file not correct in the 7z package?
Thanks.
Frank
Give me a few minutes, I'm downloading it now to see.

Edit: So, mine unzips as "root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3.tar.md5" just fine, took fifteen minutes to download. That's really unusual but try redownloading the file again. To confirm, I selected the very first VRBLK3 link which wipes /sdcard.

You'll need to ask a better question. What are you trying to do?
Rooting to get superuser access?
Wanting to install a custom ROM?
Installing a rooted custom ROM is pretty simple - grab the ROM, install ODIN, and flash it.
you have to flash cwm recovery using odin
then install the root file from recovery
stock recovery will not work

hi. if you just want to root your phone/tablet and have superuser access, i recommend you use chainfire"s CF-AUTO-ROOT. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957160
it installs supers binary and remains the tab's stock recovery. if you also want to install a custom recovery, just find a cwm file that's compatible with your tab and start flashing it thru odin. i hope i was able to help and if so PLEASE click "THANKS".

I wouldn't say that there are lots of ways wherein you can root your tab. as almost all or all uses ODIN (as ODIN is for Samsung) and the steps are quite a like.
i'm glad that chainfire's CF-AUTO-ROOT worked on your tab. if ever you wish to install a custom rom, you first need to install a custom recovery on your tab. in my case, I installed CWM.

But my brother told that this will make my device very slow and bad.. plus the warranty will be gone and so it will be of no use of unroot as
that will still let the manufacturer know that my device is rooted and cannot be serviced.. Also its battery will be less.

on the contrary it will speed up your tab. example, if you install CM on your tab. CM is more updated than stock android and CM is also more secure as developers of CM(cyanomodgen) are focused on developing roms that are fast in performance and good in security and another way of speeding up your tab's performance is thru installing apps that makes you control clockspeed, you can overclock and underclock(possible if rooted). plus, rooting can extend your battery life by hours - this is made possible by root apps for battery like greenify, it lets you hibernate all apps that are running in the background thus they wont consume processor time and ram.
about warranty, if ever you flash a custom rom in your tab and want to get back to warranty you just have to flash stock firmware in your tab and install chainfire's triangle away so that you can reset you binary counter to 0 again. rooting is completely reversible.
by the way before I got my tab rooted, I usually charge it everyday but now my battery lasts for 2 days try it for yourself.
PLEASE CLICK "THANKS" IF I HELPED YOU.
Here are your answers:
1. ROOT is not dangerous to your tab. But you will not receive the Samsung Official Firmware via OTA.
You have to download the zip file of the official firmware and then install/flash via ODIN to get your tab updated.
2. Using custom ROM, you will VOID your device.
3. It is highly recommended to install a custom recovery like CMW on your tab before flashing any custom ROM.
4. For battery life it is recommended to use light custom ROM.
5. If you want to use custom ROM then I recommend instal/flash the stable version of ROM because they don't contain bugs or errors.
