Simple questions before buying Xperia S - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys...
After too much confusion I finally decided to purchase XPS. Just few questions:
1) I read it has plastic body, does that plastic body get scratches too easily after all its main advantage is its design ? Because every now and then my phone fell down from the bed
2) What about its dev community ? Are the new games like asphalt 6, modern combat 3, shadowgun available for the xps ?
3) and yes, what about the Yellow tint issue ? Is it resolved by the sony or still I am in luck to find a good phone ?
4) What you suggest, should I wait for HTC One X price to drop so I can buy it ... Because I would love Quad core, will my xps dual core lag if I play games too much ?

Guys.. I am thinking to change the decision just bcoz of yellow tint issue
talk.sonymobile.com/thread/34135?start=645&tstart=0 45 pages !!! too many users having this problem

Do you still want answers to your questions since you're thinking of not getting it? What device are you planning to get in that case?

I am confused again When I first got to knw abt yellow tint I thought it must be on very few phones.. but I guess I am wrong ?
I really like xperia, got xperia active right now. Don't want to get something else than xperia s but I don't want to take risk !

If you "don't want to take the risk" then choose a different device. Otherwise, get it (It's your choice).

Do you have xperia s? or if any of the reader has it.. can I ask what "good thoughts" you have so u purchased it regardless of its yellow tint issue... ?

the case on SEs don't get scratches easy, I dropped mine about 12 times, no scratches on the case or cracks on the screen, only thing is when I used my foot to bring it back to me - bad idea.

Lets say if I get the yellow tint issue then will it fade away over time or will it increase over time, Any idea?

Some people report not having it, treating it by pressing down on the screen, it fading away overtime or when the battery temperature is low, it staying forever, etc, so I don't know.

I think S2 or Sensation XE would be my choice if I don't buy XPS because SIII and HTC One X is out of my budget. These would be my first time purchasing any non sony ericsson mobile. I had W302, then X10 mini pro, then Active and now it would be XPS if there had been NO yellow tint issue ... But I would search on internet more on this and tell you guys which mobile I go with.
Any other choice than XPS, S2, XE with same budget?

Guys.. Even for yellow tint issue I am going for XPS I will try to purchase the phone from latest batch and will tell you how it goes !!! I hope I won't get the yellow tint issue :good:

if ever u get the yellow tint, you can get it replaced.
about scratches, mine just got its first bigtime,. fell about 2 feet on street and top corner border for the back cover easyly got dented! was thinking of melting it back to position but it may just look worse.,
soft matte finish = bigtime scratch magnet

I've had my Xperia S since initial release in the UK so I will answer these questions as best I can for you.
1. You'll be fine with not getting scratches too easily because I've only got a few scratches on my back cover and I've dropped it loads when I've been drunk.
2. Yes, those games you mentioned are available but the 3 newest ones to become available are Asphalt 7, The Amazing Spiderman and Sonic 4 Episode II and they all run perfectly without lag. I confirm that myself.
3. I believe I'm right in saying that you won't have the yellow tint issue because that was only on the earlier releases, like mine. AFAIK, all models made since then haven't had this issue. But even if you do, as mentioned you can send it to Sony and they will send you a replacement.
Not gonna answer question 4 because you've already bought this phone. I hope this has helped you

Anything i need to know?

Hey, I just bought this phone, I can't wait for it to arrive, but i just wanted to ask is there anything i need to know?? Any bad issues with this phone? I am going to root and install a custom rom at some point in the near future (if i get round to it).
I'm so excited at this phone is a huge upgrade for me... my last phone was the LG GT540
No issuses with phone othe than speaker not loud as my old phone which I's due to 2.3 which can be fixed once you flash.a custom rom don't keep it stock flash and enjoy cause there's some.really good roms out there that help battery last longer and make the phone prettier to look at. I like coredroid roms but theres also nice rooms that don't use sense ui which was nice to just youtube stuff.

Bluetooth sucks. Its a design flaw, don't expect good bt performance with this phone. Other than that its great.
For me, and I've heard from others, there is really only 2 things that bother me.
1.) My phone squeaks when you squeeze the bottom part, no idea why.. it's 100% brand new few days old.
2.) When unlocking by moving the ring up, I usually have to touch and drag it 3 times or so until it finally moves...
Otherwise the phone is awesome! The battery can get very hot while gaming though, you can really feel it, I rooted my phone, and it's overclocked so when I play a game for 10+ mins it gets so hot it almost feels like im touching a metal pole that has been in 100 degree heat for an hour.
Please hit thanks if I helped you! Just takes a click

It'll always happen as the case is separate from the phone itself. Mine creaks but I really couldn't care less
Mine doesn't creak nearly as much as it used to. So far I have no problems. I did notice the smallest amount of dust particles under the screen but it's literally almost impossible to see. However some people have posted some truly terrible pictures on here showing a crazy amount of dust.
This really is a superb phone.

First off, this is a good phone. But, unfortunately there is a couple of things wrong with it
I have come in direct contact with 5 different Sensations. Here's my experiences:
1. One of them had dust under the screen - I believe this is not an issue with new Sensations.
2. Two had a lousy power button - It becomes too soft and hard to press on some models. Lousy build quality there.
3. Two had the touchscreen issue - This is a serious one, but we have it fixed here on XDA... For the most part. Again, build quality?
4. Three creaked when pressed - My 5 year old nokia felt better under pressure. This is fixable with a larger battery.
5. Screens varied significantly - Don't know which screen I'd pick... Some had better viewing angles, some better contrast, or sharpness, or whatever...
6. Sense lagged more than I'd like on all of them - Maybe I want the impossible? No lag on my 1.5Ghz while scrolling through home screens? :|
7. WiFi death grip - I can live with this one.
I probably went into more detail than I should... Sorry
It's a good phone for the most part. I just expected way more from HTC (and for my money) and now I'm a bit disappointed...

[Q] Removing dust under the screen

Got another One X last weekend. I checked the screen thoroughly in store to make sure it was flawless. I have now however noticed that there is a spec of dust under the screen. It was definitely not there when I checked it in store, spent ages on a solid white background making sure.
So is there anyway I can try and get rid of it. It got there on its own somehow so I must at least be able to move it off the side of the screen one way or another. It's no big deal if I can't get rid of it as its hardly noticeable in every day use.
I have tried gently tapping the screen and knocking it on its side but it hasn't moved so far. I don't want to try to hard encase I damage the phone. Don't want to try and take the phone apart and attempt to separate the touch component from the LCD and try either as the phone is so new.
Att will exchange for dust under the screen. But. When the phones been on and in use allowing the screen to get warm about 30 minutes lightly tap in the opposite direction. Should move the dust out.
Work on my iPhone back in the day. :/

pretty sure the glass is glued to the lcd and stuck there forever!
Thanks for the reply's. I'm in Australia so now ATnT for me. This is my 9th. Very happy with this one. Won't be returning it for this unless more gets under there. I must be able to move it. I'll try leaving it on max brightness as you suggested and go from there.
It must be possible to separate the digitizer from the LCD because you can buy a replacement -

Since the panel is laminated to the glass (right?), forget it. Exchange.

Bugger. Wonder how it got there then. Haven't been able to move it at all. Who knows maybe it was there and just didn't see it when I bought it. I have 30 days to take it back so I'll hold of and see what happens.

Um not to be a complete **** but after working retail for 6 years as a store manager for At&t and several years in I.T / EE / and project management. The chances of you running into 9 defects of a single model and brand new replacements are are probably slimmer than you getting struck by lightning and winning the lottery together. I would start asking myself am I OCD, do I have dementia, should I be ruling out Delirium..
Ok, sorry I'm being an ass. Just saying.. you either have the worst luck in the world. I read your post completely wrong, or; its you. Either way hope you get it figured out. This phone really is something extraordinary.

My first had dead pixels and a yellow spot. Second had creaking and a rattle. 3rd dent in the lcd panel under the digitizer. The next 5 I unboxed in store. Some had dead pixels and the others had bad dust under the screen.
I didn't tell them were the dust or pixels were, just that there was something wrong with the screen, they pointed them out. The dust under this one is nothing like the ones I unboxed in store a while back, some specs were almost as big as the dot on the letter i which is why I'm going to stick with this one.
I don't think it's to much to ask to get one without dust under the screen seeing as how there are many out there with defect free phones. I feel like I am entitled to the same experience as them, paid the same hard earned money as them after all.. I suspect though that many probably have dust etc but have either not noticed or choose to live with it.
Your right about the phone being extraordinary, which is why I haven't stuck with a refund. Really no going back after you have had a phone like this.
Edit: check this forum out. I'm not the only one with issues and multiple returns. It's a shame so many are having repeat issues.

LOL
This guy worked in retail & engineering and the bases of his argument is the fact he thinks dust and imperfections are ludicris for someone to complain about! Now if he worked at the HTC manufacturing plant where they made these phones and can honestly produce manufacturing data depicting margins of error of defect in the manufacture of these devices in several respective categories then we can break the odds down mathematically and prove whether this poster is full of $hit, delusional etc!
Until then I'll keep lolling @ the response It was good
He's got a point... Say the odds of you getting a messed up screen is 1 in 1000... Multiply .001 by itself 9 times. Those are the odds of you actually getting 9 broken phones in a row.
Edit... It's 1x10^-27.... So yeah, you'd win the lottery a couple of times.

Had HTC one but on 3rd replacement have given up so getting s4

I have always bought Samsung for the last few years but thought of give the new HTC one a chance how I regret it
3 replacements and still have issues so I've thrown in the towel and arranged a replacement in a few weeks to the s4 so back to Samsung I come
Question one of the biggest things with the one is the speakers I presume the s4 will still have tiny speakers ?
Have Samsung sorted the emmc chip problem out as my note 2 died onme hence jumping ship
Tbh im looking forward to turning to Samsung just hope the handset is as good as people make out

check out the reviews thread. one of them has comparisons of the speakers. i have an S3 and it's not tiny. the S4 is supposed to be a little louder in some aspects so it'll be fine. prob not HTC One loudness but it won't be tiny sounding.
not sure about emmc. looks like it was sorted out back with the S2/Note 1. i'd suspect it would be fixed for S4.
edit: off topic, what was wrong with all 3 of your HTC One's?

also the home / back button didn't work properly (and still the case on my 3rd replacement hence why ive thrown the towel in)

Second one which arrived - well what can I say !
Proximity sensor didn't work

Back/home lights didn't work - presume down to the sensor not working
and it also had an horrendous screen problem where white glowed through because it wasn't sealed
I don't think ill get htc one speaker quality just don't want really low
Really disappointed at HTC but now know why I went to Samsung

man, that sucks. well, in the past i've had more problems with Sammy phones over HTC. S2 had a nickel sized ring on the screen that i didn't notice until after it was too late to send back. Galaxy Nexus had banding issue and when i sold it, it had been used for about 6mon and then off for a straight 6mon. turned it on and it had some bad burn-in lines. S3 screen has a few black splotches when looking at completely black screen in a dark room. had the HTC One X when it first came out and the only thing wrong with it was a loose volume rocker on the first one. second one was perfect but i just ended up not liking that device. so yeah, Samsung just typically has issues with it's AMOLED displays, pentile or not. also, the S3 i have is my 3rd one haha. first one had backlight bleed. second one had very loose power/volume rocker. this 3rd one has a loose power button but i gave up at that point and just said whatever. here's to hoping the S4 is perfect...
I imagine ever phone has issues when launched I can't think of one that has been great first time. Maybe the iPhone 4S I can't remember any glaring issues from that. But I have had problems with a lot of devices when I purchase them first off. I'd maybe wait for the S4 until others get it then see if it has issues. Not ever HTC One is a bad device either.

The speakers are twice the size of the N2 and three times the size of the SGS3. Here's GSMArena's conclusion after comparing the two...
Winner: HTC One. The Galaxy S4 is a tad louder, but the HTC One takes this one with well-positioned stereo speakers and far nicer sound in general.

I had a Teg3 One X I got last March from the first batch built and it was perfect. But there were a ton of h/w and s/w releated QC issues and people on the forum weren't exactly happy. The One's experiencing them too and people saying "my third exchange seems to be better" isn't uncommon. HTC chooses incredibly complicated designs which look great but are a ***** to manufacture consistently. Beauty has its price.
My first SIII had a defect, the volume buttons were so loose that when the phone vibrated, they would rattle inside the device! Not that I'm going to complain too much about it, I kept it for almost the full 60 days I had to return it at Best Buy with Silver rewards membership, and I'm on the same one since August 2012....
One thing I wanted to mention in this whole discussion is.... who drops an SIII for an iPhone 5, after having the 4 and 4S? Hell, it's enough to switch between brands of Android manufacturers to understand how things work on the different phones, but between operating systems? That would drive me crazy, aside from the fact that even trying to use a locked down OS would make me want to throw that stupid thing against a brick wall!

Lol experienced that with my note 2 .... hence why I jumped ship however I regret doing that and cant wait for the s4
Just hope I don't experience the same with the s4 as im stuck on a 2yr contract
One bonus with Sammy is I have a proper repair centre 5 mins from me in Manchester and they sorted my Note 2 out for me
In the same boat, just called today and said I want to swap my contract to a GS4. I just hope I get a good one first time, Samsung have never let me down before. It is a shame though as I really wanted to like the One, I liked a lot about it, just the build quality was very poor and it was a dead/stuck pixel heaven on that screen.

I had a dodgy S3 on release, I was one of the first in the forum if I remember & I switch phone OS's loads. Doesnt bother me at all I could happily live with an iPhone or an android phone. I preferred the 5 to the S3 my opinion obviously but I'm using the One now and liking it
I've had 2 HTC phones and absolutely hated them both. Problems galore...
The GS4 is my first jump into a Samsung smartphone. All my other techy friends left HTC for Samsung and never looked back.
Crossing my fingers. I know that there are/can be issues with the first batch but I'm not letting HTC bite me in the ass for a 3rd time. This thread is proof that I can't trust them anymore, no matter how good the reviews for the HTC One are.
Sorry guys but my opinion about some of you is, that you are really bored and looking for something perfection that is not normal.
I don't mean that to serious problems like pixel errors or something similar serious problem.
I mean, that if you are satisfied with your phone and you probably find a little problem (like a volume key not being perfect or the unibody is 0,02 inch bigger on one side) you surely know that you can send your phone to guaranty departement if the tiny problem is getting "bigger".
Not just that. you post it big on forums to show how unhappy you are, but there is another star in the dark sky shining on you and you illusions.
Most people of this kind also don't have really good social contacts, like having a good girlfriend for example.
Please do not see this as an personal attack. It is just something that someone wants you to know, that you are not happy for real...

I meant something like: going shopping if you are unhappy with your life or searching for a hair in the soup to get involved with the restaurant, but in reality your wife just left you.

What color will you get?

copper for me. so so sexy...
Why did SONY get rid off the PURPLE version???
Can't say which color i'd choose, maybe i'll wait for Z4?!
I like the copper one...

Z black, ZL red, Z1 white, Z2 white... Think I will go.copper for the Z3.
Maybe they will make the Z4 in red
Copper of course!
I would buy a red case to my dream phone.

Black, like every Xperia I've owned with the exception of the X1 (silver)

white is alright, but to me the white just adds too much contrast, the darker colors tend to add more immersion when you're just want to drown yourself the display. besides..maybe if iphone weren't white i would consider the color, but i want to make sure my device looks nothing like a iphone, primary reason i've never bought a white phone, i would rather rock a pink phone if white and pink were the only options, that's how much i despise apple.

I don't like the fact that this year they decided to make the front of the device white too, it looks weird since you can see how big the bezels really are and all the sensors , I guess we can never be truly satisfied , I know there were a lot people complaining last year because they wanted the front to be white too :crying:
I would love a white one, but I believe tmobile is only carrying black. Their version will also come with 32gb, but it doesn't matter because I use a sd card?

Depends on the use. SD Card can hold music, videos, pictures, emulator roms, etc. Play store apps, however, use the internal storage. As phones get more powerful, the assets get larger. Baldur's Gate on my phone is currently taking up 2.3GB of space. Bard's Tale is taking up 1.72GB. Two games are taking up around 4GB on my phone. I'd LIKE to have a GTA on there and maybe an Asphalt. If I get the 32GB Z3 I could hold any game I fancied... for now.
Going for the white one
White Anti glare screenprotector on both back and front + a The wireless charging case hopefully or just a normal flip cover
I ordered the copper one... Would take the silver green one, too. My LG G2 was black, so I want something different this time
Black goes with everything!!!
Ordered the Copper one, and the Green Compact for my wife. They should arrive in the very beginning of October!
I will get the Sony style cover for mine, the Compact will get some wallet style cover when I find a decent one.
I'm leaving Samsung behind now, been true to them for a couple of years (2xGalaxy N9000, the first Note, 2xNote 10.1, Tab 3-7", Tab 3-8", S4) but feel that they are getting to close to some kind of monopoly ideas, they are trying to force me to buy Samsung for all products, they don't understand that this is the reason why many of us despice the fruit company. Nothing wrong with the hardware (nothing special about it either) but the i-everything you must have to get it to work is a no-go for me.
My first step towards Sony was the SW2 that I bought 1,5 years ago instead of buying the Gear even if I did have the S4 at that time.
Seeing how much the software have improved in the SW2 during this time I thought SONY would get the chance now.

[Q] Should i join the Nexus family?

I want to put the Nexus 5 under the Christmas tree for myself (since no one else is going to do it ;_. Specially now, when they ceased manufacturing them and thus the supply is drying out quick.
I really like the specs, but then i read the threads here: bootloop, died during charging, won't turn on, bootloop, dead, bootloop, water sticker turning red by itself.. and so on..
Is the N5 really so fragile and prone to failures? I'm on a tight budget here, so i can't just buy another one, if this one dies on me in couple of months for no good reason.
What are your experiences? Ever had any problems with yours? Ever had to send it in for repairs?
N5 seems like a perfect fit for me (bar the tiny battery life and nonoled screen), but i don't want to just buy it blindly.
Thanks.
The majority of issues you are mentioning were caused by user error. ?
The N5 is a great device at its price. Just do lots of reading and learning before doing anything.... And you'll avoid most the issues you brought up. ?

Read any device forum on xda. They're all like that. Lol
Sent from my Android 5.0 Nexus 5
You should. After Philips Diga, Siemens C35, SE T28, Nokia 3110, Nokia 3310, Nokia 6310i (a phone when we didn't even know what SOT is and also didn't care because the battery was never empty), SE K750i, SE K790i, SE K810i, SE C902i, SE C905i, HTC Legend (just for few days), SE X10i, SE Arc S, Sony Xperia S - I'm finally happy now. After Nexus 4 I owned Nexus 5 and it is almost Camasutra if Google didn't screw some things up with the Lollipop. I'm also happy to see some grown up person here, because I have to buy even Philips Diga by my self.
You have to take everything to read on xda (and the internet in general) with a pinch of salt...
You won't get the same number of equivalent positive threads because the sole use of the internet is for complaining lol. And many of the complaints are either over the tiniest OCD detail, or nothing to do with the phone and user error blaming everything without actually investigating the cause...
The phone is still a great device in spite of all the negativity you read. Hope it gives you a merry xmas!
No

Okay, thanks everyone, i'm doing it.
It's a bummer about the no fm radio thing but the specs are just too good to pass on it.
I also have clumsy fingers, so the n5 will be kissing the ground a lot. Will the spigen protective case be enough to counteract my clumsiness?
