Getting TF300 Tomorrow - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting the TF300 tomorrow. Is it safe to assume that that TF300 is one of the easier tablets to unlock and put a custom rom onto?

First of all this should be in the questions section. Second root is one-click and unlocking the device is done by simply installing the asus app and voiding your warranty.

Some questions
Sorry, I know that post isn't in de right section, but I have some questions with the same subject.
So, If I do root there is NO warrenty any more? even if it is a hardware problemem or somme thing like that?
Can somme one tell me please, wat is de max capacity of the usb reader, I mean, can I put a flash driver with 64GB for example?
The tab have a microSD port, I thing, but the docking have also a SD reader, so we can use 2 cards (one MicroSD 32Gb and one SD 16 Gb for example) together? If YES, how can i know were I'm writing my file, in internal, MicroSD or SD card?
----EDIT
I don't have the tab yet, I want to be sure if these tab will answer all my needs. Tanks

the internal storage is saved in /sdcard. MicroSD is in /Removable/MicroSD. I'd imagine SD card would be in /Removable/SD or something to that effect.

Tanks... But and about the flash driver... Wat is the maximum capacity, the tab read how much max?
Sorry for that ugly English

Manufacturer says 32gb. Some users have reported success with 64gb. I assume you are referring to the "microSD Slot" on the tablet itself.

Yes, tanks... But there is also a 2.0 USB on docking, so can I, normally put a pen drive? And how much is the limit of the pen drive?
Sent from my R800i using xda premium

The flash drive/pen drive slot is on the keyboard dock which is sold separately from the tablet. With the dock though, yes, you can put in a flash drive. I believe the limit is 32gb, but again, it's possible that it may accept larger sizes like 64gb. I haven't tried putting anything bigger than that though.

Well I got the TF300 today. I have to say it is by far one of the fastest if not the fastest tablet I have used. And I have used at least 5 in the last few months. And it has no backlight bleed which was my main concern. So far I am liking what I am seeing. The only thing that concerns me now is, no gorilla glass. I hope this thing has some sort of scratch resistant screen. Also why only the one speaker on the right side that is kinda lame. I can totally tell listening to stuff that sound is only coming from one side. Ok back to more testing...

Increasing performance via MicroSD?

I've seen a few posts about people saying the NAND controller in the TF700 is slow and that is what causes a number of performance issues. Is this NAND in charge of both the internal and external cards or did they select a poor one just for the internal memory and went with a better quality controller for the external?
One reason I'm asking is that I saw a few people under the CleanROM thread mention that they moved a bunch of their apps over to a fast USH-1 MicroSD and it make a huge difference. But, if the controller was slow and shared across all cards, then that shouldn't help as the bottleneck would still be there. So, are they mistaken or does moving apps (Data2SD was the app they mentioned allowing them to do this) alleviate performance issues?
If it did alleviate issues, couldn't we use this to our advantage and install the OS to a USH-1 card and use internal memory for storage only? Or, come up with a good way to strategically place all applications on the available storage card as a part of rom installation.
OR, people are wrong and there's no way performance could be improved as the NAND is shared.
Can anyone speak to this?
I think one of the advantages is that the USH-1 cards are much faster than the NAND memory in the TF700. I plan on picking one up when time permits to find out for myself.
However I'll admit I have no real understanding of how it works. Many seem to be supporting it though, and I think Scott plans to implement it into his kernel so there must be something to it.

You must be talking about the Data2SD mod in the development section.
I'm planning on doing this when my Sandisk 64gig UHS1 card gets to me.

I guess maybe I'm mixing up terminology or what I've read.
I thought what people were saying is slow, wasn't the memory in the TF700, but the memory controller that manages the memory. I've seen people say "NAND Chipset", as saying that the specific chipset is cheap and they should have went with a higher quality.
Now, if the controller is not bad but hey went with cheap and slow memory, then this makes much more sense. Using that mod to move apps to a UH1 card would drastically improve performance. I also ordered one (this morning) from Amazon which should get in tomorrow. From there it sounds like I'll be playing with that mod.
I'm more interested in the performance bump than extra storage.
Is this the proper card?

Can the MicroSD Card slot read/write at 90mb/s?
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Mmmmm....
My understanding is, that the Hynix (formerly Hyundai) controller used for data built in has deplorable read\write speeds.
Hynix just brands certain products and some unknown maker stamps out the hardware.
Evidently moving the data partition along with system cache to a speedier better quality external SDcard plugged into the tablet will hopefully double read\write speed.
The system ram is another story.
It's all about getting system data to move a lot faster from system disc to ram to cpu.
Kind of like changing a hard disc out in a PC.
I have no idea how these devs are doing this with coding, yet if it works and stays working I'm gonna have a party!
As far as the cards go I'll have to do a lot more reading around these forums to judge what may be best.
I've read the "Ultra Hi Speed" cards work well.
It's weird tho they come in class 6 and 10.
I believe the key for a good card is being able to write small files 32kb or so very quickly on random calls from internal processing.
I keep confusing myself with all this...it will straighten out after two more pots of coffee...

In theory yes, but in real life, NO. I have tested a few digital cameras using card with 90mb/s and I never achieved this speed, (it hits 90 for like a second then quickly dropped to about 40-44mb/s). A good example is a 30mb/s you are getting less for read and even smaller for write. But if you get the 90 card, it's still better than the 30 (must compared with same manufacture and same class).

Here is a link to some SD card speeds.
A couple on the list I've tested and my results were about the same as this list.
As always there are newer cards out that read faster that aren't on this list.

That is a good resource, however at the bottom it says those speeds are established by a large file transfer. Since we are replacing internal I/O we need small file transfer right? I'm still researching and I could be wrong though.

True!
Small file fast writes are best.
Android won't have to deal with massive files.
Based on this, it sounds like there is an improvement in performance when using the cards. Now I just need to read the thread on that mod so I can take full advantage of it.

I researched a bit and came up with this:
The internal storage is connected to the CPU/SOC roughly like this:
[ Tegra 3 ] --- MMC interface --- [ NAND controller ] --- NAND-specific interface --- [ NAND memory array ]
Everything beyond the MMC interface is inside the eMMC chip. So the NAND controller that is slow is part of the Hynix eMMC.
Tegra 3 has 4 SD/MMC interfaces. One of them is connected to the internal eMMC, the other one to the microSD slot. The full size SD card in the dock is connected to the tablet indirectly via USB, very much like a cardreader on a PC.
There is also a NAND flash controller inside Tegra 3 - AFAIK this is not used in the TF700. The advantage of using an eMMC is that wear leveling can be offloaded to the eMMC and the software doesn't need to care.

The internal eMMC is not that slow for reading, its main performance bottleneck are random writes. So keeping the system apps on the internal storage is probably good enough since the ROM is read-only in normal use, but putting the data on an external card apparently helps a lot.
I picked up an 8gig Ultra Class 10 at best buy for $11.00. I'll give it a go when I get home.

Missing half of Internal Storage GS3

I have a 32GB Galaxy S3
For some reason when I go to Settings>Storage
Under Device memory>Total Space 16.00GB(My external SD shows up as having 32GB)
If I plug my phone into my laptop I see two drives Phone(~12GB) SD card (32GB)
I've tried going to mounts and storage in cwm and formatting system, data, cache and sd card. I have also tried different roms
Is it possible that my phone is mislabeled and I received a 16GB by mistake.
Anyone no what I'm doing wrong
I have read on here somewhere that a few people did get mislabeled s3's that said they were 32gb and were actually 16gb. May want to take it into a store and see what they say.

I guess that's the only explanation that makes sense. Barring any other bright ideas, I guess I'll return to stock and do an exchange. Really sucks as JB roms just started rolling a few days ago and I finally got my phone running perfectly.

Ya definitely but paying for a 32GB one and getting a 16 is not cool. That is a big deference, I definitely feel you on it being a bad time cause these JB roms are awesome. But one day shouldn't be too bad, plus they will have some better updated Verizon's by then. Good luck man that sucks for sure.
Yeah, you have a 16gb. 16gb are really 12gb "4gb ROM" so you should go asap to a store

just stick a 64gb sd card in the external slot and have vzw credit you the difference. im not sure why most folks want 32gb of internal anyway. i prefer to keep my stuff on ext that way if i need to wipe internal, i dont have to move anything.

:good:
The only other reason would be resale value and/or sellability... but probably still wouldn't make economical sense.
I made the mistake of having most of my stuff on the phone memory (sold my extSD card with my last phone) and it got wiped when my phone soft bricked and required an ODIN.
Now I have a class 10 64Gb SD card from BB ($49) and it's great.
It is worth to note that I had to format as Fat32 to get CWM to read it in recovery mode. Now ALL my data and backups are on the extSD card!!!

Here's an update
I went to Verizon this morning and presented my problem to the Tech. She is baffled. She proceeds to convene a veritable round table of management, techs and sales people. After some tense moments of deliberation, they offer me a 16GB Micro-SD card(note I believe they only carry class 6).
It takes all my composure not to fall to the ground in a seizure of laughter.
Now even if I didn't have a 64GB class 10, how would replacing the missing internal memory(high quality memory), with low quality class6 external memory even close to equivelant.
After noting my reaction, they proceed to offer a full replacement. Needless to say, I chose the latter

[Q] Been curious about swapping sd cards on HOX

I have not seen this done before in any posts and wondering. Would it be possible to dismantle the HOX and replace the sd card with a larger capacity? My sister in law gave me a HTC windows phone and said it went dead on her one day and threw it in the drawer. I played with it and never could get it back to working order. I scoured the net and found a way to replace the internal sd. So I put in a 1gb sd and now it works. Is there a way to do the same with the HOX , just curious.
unfortunately you cant.. the windows phone 7 devices used microsd card instead of nand inside em (although the sd slot wasnt accessible without disassembly), thats why it was possible to replace.. in this case the one x uses nand which is built into the motherboard, hence cant be swapped out like a microsd

From reading in the soff thread before it was achieved, if I recall correctly there are pads on the main board for a SD holder. Not sure if that's verified though.

so if the pads really are there, one would have to solder on the card slot to be able to insert a sd card?

SD card or not? I don't think is a problem, with a 32GB phone you have plenty of space. Now, if you like having a lot of music, photos, videos and movies it might not be enough. The SD card option is always welcome, after reading all of google reasons not to include a SD card on the nexus line up, I still don't get it. Is always nice to have some extra space.

I had an S4 and it was great having extra space and never had problems, the reason why I would like to have one is because last week I had a situation with my nexus 5, I tried to install the SNAPSHOT M10 (CM11) OTA and I had a Nightly version installed so it messed up my phone and I had to push another ROM thru ADB .... if I had the SD slot I could've just plugged in an SD card on the computer and copied to the card

You wouldn't have had to remove the sdcard. Just mount USB mass storage from recovery
adb push is only a minor inconvenience. You should be able to do it in your sleep.

None of my phones have had one, so while I may not know what I'm missing it seems I'm fine without it. Last phone was 16GB and currently at 32GB. I only ever keep a few albums of music on at one time, and I delete most videos or games when I'm done with them.
If I did use one I would make sure to buy the fastest SD card avaiable that cost 3x as much, as I would not want it to become a bottleneck.

32gb is definitely not enough. I need that amount of space just for my apps, and AT LEAST another 32gb for my music. That's one of the main reasons why I always have an iPhone as well- more storage space. I had the 64gb iPhone 5s and it was maxed. My 32gb N5 is maxed, and I don't have a single song on it. I can't stand streaming music.

I hear you, but Google Play Music is not bad, the problem is that you need to have internet to listen to your songs... but i wanted more space for my music, I have over 80gb of music on my PC and I wanna be able to play them on my phone without having to stream it thru Play Music
I have an old iPod Video (1st gen) that I se for my music, it has 120GB and it's almost maxed with videos and music
For me, Play music just doesn't cut it. Every file I've ever listened to from Play has had horrible compression artifacts. Spotify extreme quality is passable in a pinch, but I like my lossless files. ALAC on iPod/iPhone, FLAC on everything else.

Considering getting a Note 5. Have some questions

Hey all. I'm considering switching to a Note 5. I currently have a Note 3. I switched to t mobile from att last week and picked up a LG V10 which I am supposed to start using tomorrow. I'm now considering this phone. I had a concern about battery life but from what I see here after rooting and running a custom ROM battery life seems great. I'm concerned about the storage with no sd card. If I got this phone, I'd get the 64 gb version. I'm wondering if samsung has any solution to uploading your photos/videos while on the go. I'm going on vacation for 10 days next month and I know this limited amount of storage wouldn't be enough unless I uploading my photos and videos somewhere each night. I won't have my pc with me. Does samsung have a place to upload? If not where do you upload? Thanks

Thanks

I use Google photos as well it's imo the nicest and most user friendly cloud upload for photos. However you could auto upload to dropbox, or onedrive. If you have a Microsoft 365 account you get 1 TB of onedrive space included with your account plus you get an additional 100 GB via a Samsung offer when you buy the Note 5. I use Google photos as my primary and onedrive as a redundancy backup.
I thought I was going to miss the sd card slot as well but I don't. I got the 64 and I also carry a 64 GB sandisk otg/usb combo drive which you get usually find on sale at reasonable prices on amazon.

Having had both, the note 3 and the 5 honestly, I think I should have went with the 4. I like the 5 and all but I do miss the SD card, I use Google photos as has been mentioned but having to delete photos and videos is aggravating to me. Between photos, videos, music and apps I am out of space, granted, I have the 32gb but the 64gb would be the same in time.
I have not rooted this phone, been holding out for Samsung pay and my bank to work together, says coming soon. Regardless tho, that's something else I am tired of...I should have stayed with nexus devices in regard to root the more I think about it lol. Anyways, getting off topic now.
I got the 5 because costco had a $250 rebate, Samsung had the holiday promotion and Samsung pay had a $100 credit for purchasing from samsung.com if you sign up for and activate a card. When I added all that up it was just to good of a deal to pass up on.
Just get one of these.

This looks interesting. I worry if I have the phone in my pocket with this in it it might break.

You only have it in when you need it, otherwise you put it back in its little holder and keep it on your keys.

The Note 5 is so much better than the 4. I think the 3 was better than the 4 but the 5 is a great device as long as you can get over the storage. I think a Keychain OTG thumb drive is a good compromise for those with additional storage needs.
Yes please dont fall into the trap of so many being dependent on an sd card. There are so many choices to use and honestly 50 gb of data on your phone just because is a lil crazy. You have as mentioned above plenty of storage alternatives and videos I simply upload to Youtube and privately share or watch.
People seem to forget that sometimes phones take a dump, get lost, stolen or break. Now with your whole life on the phone what next?
Great phone, first time not rooting in 6 years or so and with package disabler and a conscious effort to effectively keep my phone from being bogged with crap things are working out lovely.... Plus I use and love Samsung pay

I have a thought......
Because of Qi charging. The Micro SD will be seldom used. The Note 5 is slick so most people will end up using a case....so..... I am waiting for someone to build a case that has a microsd built in that connects to the usb port and it does not interfere with Wireless qi & NFC use. If someone builds it... I want my 10%! I thought of it first :silly:

Great thought I can't be mad at that just don't see why we need to have terabyte worth of data on our phones. But hey again patent that thought

Couldn't agree more. People also seem to be forgetting or just not reading the reason behind getting rid of the External SDCard.

Whaaaaaat There is a reason for it who would of thought. LOL
People just hate change that's all I swapped a S2 for a Nexus and didn't not sweating the 16gb hard drive just did what I had to do. We are just a bunch of complainers and entitled people that's all.... Lol
I guess the future will be personal cloud ?.. people will have their own wireless storage as a wearable device and it can be accessed without any wires or case and it can be used with laptop, phone and may also be encrypted from others stealing it ?

My Note 4 is my go to device but I also have a Note 5. I thought about getting a V10 but I need the SPen so I had no other choice if I wanted something new.
Somebody mentioned how SD cards are not reliable and can mess up resulting in lost data. Frankly, that hardly ever happens. In years of SD card use I've never had that happen to me but I did have my Note 5 become completely unresponsive. It would not turn on at all and I had to get a replacement from TMobile. Guess what? I lost all the pics I had taken that day because even though I use Google photos, I only sync the pics when charging and on WiFi to avoid using too much cellular data. If I had an SD card I would have been able to pull the pics off the card even though the phone wouldn't turn on.
Some people say there is a good reason for the SD card feature being removed. The only reason is profit. Why could they not have made it work? Some people say it's because the memory isn't compatible with the new memory being used on these phones but I don't believe that. Why is it that OTG works? Couldn't they have just made an SD card slot that worked the same way as OTG?
I like the Note series but I sure hope we get back expandable storage.

Expandable sd slot is built into the chpset. USB otg is not. Think of it as a truck. The bed is built into the body, but to get more room you get a trailer hitch and trailor.
Now we have an suv instead of a truck. That's why swapping primary storage drives was a thing on some older phones. Instead of using a actual nand flash, some phones used a micro SD card for internal and a second for expandable.
On some devices you could actually change to the Expandable storage being the "internal" storage via bootloader.
The type of chip being used in the note 5 is not capable of running a micro SD card and maintain high speed for the onboard. The how to just isn't there yet.
Regardless of that being bs. The other thing about designs, the shells are made first, then the rest of the product. Outside in.
