Missing half of Internal Storage GS3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a 32GB Galaxy S3
For some reason when I go to Settings>Storage
Under Device memory>Total Space 16.00GB(My external SD shows up as having 32GB)
If I plug my phone into my laptop I see two drives Phone(~12GB) SD card (32GB)
I've tried going to mounts and storage in cwm and formatting system, data, cache and sd card. I have also tried different roms
Is it possible that my phone is mislabeled and I received a 16GB by mistake.
Anyone no what I'm doing wrong

I have read on here somewhere that a few people did get mislabeled s3's that said they were 32gb and were actually 16gb. May want to take it into a store and see what they say.

I guess that's the only explanation that makes sense. Barring any other bright ideas, I guess I'll return to stock and do an exchange. Really sucks as JB roms just started rolling a few days ago and I finally got my phone running perfectly.

Ya definitely but paying for a 32GB one and getting a 16 is not cool. That is a big deference, I definitely feel you on it being a bad time cause these JB roms are awesome. But one day shouldn't be too bad, plus they will have some better updated Verizon's by then. Good luck man that sucks for sure.

Yeah, you have a 16gb. 16gb are really 12gb "4gb ROM" so you should go asap to a store

Yeah keep us posted since their not selling 32gb ones at my local Verizon anymore. They do have the black one though!

just stick a 64gb sd card in the external slot and have vzw credit you the difference. im not sure why most folks want 32gb of internal anyway. i prefer to keep my stuff on ext that way if i need to wipe internal, i dont have to move anything.

:good:
The only other reason would be resale value and/or sellability... but probably still wouldn't make economical sense.
I made the mistake of having most of my stuff on the phone memory (sold my extSD card with my last phone) and it got wiped when my phone soft bricked and required an ODIN.
Now I have a class 10 64Gb SD card from BB ($49) and it's great.
It is worth to note that I had to format as Fat32 to get CWM to read it in recovery mode. Now ALL my data and backups are on the extSD card!!!

Here's an update
I went to Verizon this morning and presented my problem to the Tech. She is baffled. She proceeds to convene a veritable round table of management, techs and sales people. After some tense moments of deliberation, they offer me a 16GB Micro-SD card(note I believe they only carry class 6).
It takes all my composure not to fall to the ground in a seizure of laughter.
Now even if I didn't have a 64GB class 10, how would replacing the missing internal memory(high quality memory), with low quality class6 external memory even close to equivelant.
After noting my reaction, they proceed to offer a full replacement. Needless to say, I chose the latter

SD card problems

Some apps that I've pushed to my external SD card suddenly show up as not installed and I then have to reinstall from the market. Any ideas what's wrong?
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Right now the phone is having problems when you store any apps on the SD card. Make sure they are all stored internally and that should solve your problems.
you have 4gb of app storage, there's no need for apps2sd especially since it breaks the apps, sd card and everything else.
But for me such as with evernote the data is stored on the SD card and the app fails when the SD card unmount itself and I have to resync it.

Yes, theres a bug in the software causing this to happen when apps are installed on the sdcard. Just make sure all ur apps are in internal storage and you should be fine, or is 4gb not enough?

Well until Moto provides a update you WILL continue to have the problems having the apps on your sd card. There is no way around it right now.

I agree it would be nice, but then again there are alot of things that would be nice, doesnt make them happen any sooner. You've been made aware of what the issue is, how to avoid it, and now can decide how you want to proceed from here on out.

never use the atrix 2 to format your card, do it with a card reader in windows
I'm on my 2nd Atrix 2. The first one had trouble with the sdcard as most of the people are writing about on XDA so I got a replacement. The 2nd one works perfectly with the same sdcard installed. In addition to fixing the sdcard issues, wireless works more reliably and call quality is better indicating they may have had some hardware quality control issues vs. software issues. If you're within your 30 days return period I would suggest getting a replacement.

I've been monitoring this and moved many of my non essential apps to my SD card for testing purposes. Then I set my phone so any updates to apps has to be approved, none of my apps nor is the phone auto update.
Worked fine for two weeks until I finally updated three apps. Then I lost 7 apps on the SD card

I've been doing some testing of my own and get the same results everytime as you. Motorola def has some bugs here and seems like the RZR might be having them as well. Hopefully this update will cure them.

I'm trying to be patient for that update. But, it's a tough bone to swallow spending $65 for an SD card just to store MP3s on. It would be nice to have some sort of rough ETA from Moto on the update (i.e., before my 30 days is up). I'd try a Samsung Infuse, but that would be taking a step backward in video and processor.

Nope. I'm guessing that when Moto pushes out the update ATT will have to put their blessing on it and we all know how quick that will happen.

Try a warranty exchange. I promise the issues you have seen tylercarter, is not exactly what everyone else has, especially with google contacts disapperaing. If you bought it at ATT they are decent if you go into a store. If you bought it at best buy forget it, even 1 day past 30 day they will tell you too bad so sad. ATT took care of me three times even at 40 days, they let me switch to a different phone each time. That was back in march so.... give it a try.
I hate to say it, but fixes for this issues with the SDcard most likely will never come. Now if we can get the source code for this phone, then WE can fix the issue much like cyanogen did those type of things for many phones. I will definitely do the fix for it once we get that.

To SD or not to

Is there any advantage to buying an external SD card as far as flashing roms and such? I don't have a lot of music and photos stored so space is not a concern.

I didn't think space would be an issue for me either. I started using and 8 gig card, then a 16, and now a 32. I don't use my phone for music or video either unless its streaming. The thing is, once you have a nandroid or 6 on it, some ROM add ons, a couple of apps (along with their storage requirements), and a few other things you will notice space filling quickly. I use my SD card for picture and video recording storge as well, but I don't take alot of pictures and video. Its nice to have the extra space incase I need to though. I am a fan of keeping whatever I can on external SD if possible instead of internal. And I also back up the important stuff onto my PC and a backup drive. I just got a PNY 32 gig class 10 at Bestbuy for $39 and the Accessories section lists Amazon deals at around $32 if you can find them. I think it is worth it. Its nice to know the extra strorage is there just in case even if you don't think you will ever need to use it. Plus, you can remove the SD card and make sure the data on it won't be erased or messed up by new flashes and stuff like that. Its also easily transferable.
Off to future shop!!

Blank SD Card?!

I just got a notification on my galaxy s3 saying "Sd card blank or unsuported files.." if I open the notification it says are you sure you want to format sd card. I'm guessing the sd card just died. Is there anyway i can take my files off or are they gone. Any help soon would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's toast. Do you have an adapter you can plug it into your computer with? Try that, that would be your only way if it's still salvage-able. Thats what mine did when it crashed.

Probably not. Cards crash out of nowhere. Coulda been a defective card. How old is it? What are the other specs? Manufacturer, etc...

Thats about how long my card from my X lasted, a little over 2 years... I think that's just their shelf life. I'd had mine in my S3 as soon as I got it and had it rooted and ROM'd a few times without a prob. Then one day it just didn't work.
Thanks for the help also are there any brand SD cards you would recommend 16 or 32 gb

I've always bought SanDisk myself. Read the reviews of each specific card tho, even SanDisk has had some crappy ones.
Had been frustrating with my new Sandisk Ultra 32g till one day I was about to send my S3 in to demand for replacement, I did a final test of the card on other S3 & phones - & it had the same problem - SO IT WAS THE CARD....
Called Sandisk Distributor & they said it is a known problem between S3 & several SD brands but Sandisk has resolved the issue with the new batch of cards that has just arrived in Dec 2012.
Changed the card one-for-one & plugged it in immediately - Problem solved. Card remains usable again....

Samsung 64gb Class 10

Hey fellow S4 users,
I just got my new micro SD card today and followed some guides here to remove the unallocated part and also to format it to fat32. After doing all this I checked my card and it says that there is about 58gb of free space even though there are no files on it. I was wondering whether this is normal? Or did I mess up somewhere in the process?
Thanks in advance!

I believe this has to do with the discrepancy in definition of a Gigabyte. Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
You essentially have 64GB in the Base 10 definition, but around 58GB in the Base 2 definition.

there is always space that is allocated for the mile structure as well. Just like your computer HDD is not what is "advertised"

I have a Sandisk Ultra 32GB and it says total memory is 29.71GB. It never is what it has to be, just lik RAM. But when I get a 64GB card this year Ill be getting those new Sandisk Extreme for sure.
Slightly unrelated, but has anyone had any trouble with Sandisc Ultra (10) 64GB, I've owned 2, the first no longer works at all, the second quite often refuses to allow me to copy anything to it. Both are official, both purchased from different companies. Both tested in Galaxy s2 and S4 with same results. Both tried with fat32 and with exfat (on Pac rom which supports exfat). Also when removed from phone and plugged into pc directly, I can copy files across, as long as I don't copy too much at once or eventually it fails the copy and stops.
Anyone any similar experiences?

As far as i am aware about that sd card, it should run flawless. I have one with the same specs, only it.s from Samsung. It.s even on sale the sd card, it would be a shame not to buy it. Have fun with it, and may you have no problems using it !
I have Scandisk extreme 64gb, I have had no issues with it its far quicker than any card our there as it reads and write 80mbs more costly than the rest but a massive thumbs up from me on this one

The "unmounting SD card" problem has more to do with the kernel than anything else. I've had a SanDisk card and it's worked fine with the KT kernel -- so there's really no need to buy a Samsung card.
I started to buy one from Amazon on black Friday. I put it in my cart and forgot about it. Now the price has jumped back up. What a dummy.
I suggest that you get the SanDisk Ultra 64GB, lifetime warranty and no hassle using it.
I have the SanDisk Ultra 64GB and it works great in 4.2.2, but then with 4.3 and 4.4 I had to root the phone to modify platform.xml to allow apps to save files to the SD card. Works for me since I have the Google Play Edition and it's moderately easy to root the phone, but it still messes with over the air updates, so I can't say that I actually recommend anyone else doing the same, unless you like to tinker.
Hey MPCookson, could you give me some info on how you modified the xml to get the 64GB cards to work on 4.4 roms...ive searched and searched for methods to get this to work and have been unsuccessful with everything ive tried...reformatted the card to exfat, tried every 4.4 rom out there and cant get it to pick up my card...any insight would be VERY helpful!

The unmounting only happens if your kernal doesn't support exfat sd cards. Only fat32. Stock kernal and kt kernals support exfat that I know of but others like ptmr's doesn't. So it's not an sd card issue.

Had a problem with a sandisk 32gb (1 year old). Was trying different formats fat32 / exfat with supported kernel. But then it started to get unexpectedly removed very frequently. Fortunately it seemed working good in other devices (pc, tablet). I backed up everything and started a RMA. They told my card was defective and accepted it as a damaged card (I tried to fix it formatting without success). I have read some bad reviews about sandisk cards but I think this issue was only affected by some batches. I really liked theirs RMA support and I bought a new one (64gb this time). Hope it lasts more than the other one.
