This PSA brought to you by an angry loser with nothing better to do!
Just to make everything clear and said at least once in every T-Mobile device forum, SimpleMobile is not the best choice when it comes to plans in the $60 range!
For the same amount of money you can get T-Mo Monthly 4G Unlimited Talk/Text with 2gig 4G data. Of course you will be throttled once you pass that 2gig mark, but at least you will still have data!
Recently I was on vacation for a week and found myself with lots of free time in cars or in the evenings. So needless to say queue up the Netflix, Pandora and YouTube I did! All was well with the blazing and expanded 4G footprint of T-Mo, I was like a pig in 3 week old s-it! 5 days of that ticked up a 2gig data total. Right on time comes an angry text message "Your SimpleMobile Data service is at risk of being suspended due to violation of terms and conditions. Call..blahblah so we can say that we hate you."
"Bring it, you prepaid a-holes!" I thought to myself.
I'm throttled to a crawl, but I can always just switch to 2G data only! Download this, download that, torrent this, leave pandora on as often as possible.. All this plus more was my goal! What did I have to lose? I'm on a prepaid plan, what are they going to do!? .. Famous last words, they say.
One day later, the final warning message was shot "Your SimpleMobile Data service is suspended due to violation of terms and conditions. Call..blahblah so we can say how you've hurt our feelings."
Messaging > Compose > 848484 > Info . . 1 new message! "Activation date 6/10/12 ReUp by 7/10/12. Plan: $60 Unlimited Talk, Text and 4G Data. Usage: 129 min, 2708 Text, Data 2753.807 MB"
Ah, what a feeling of great triumph. I nearly manage a gig of extra and probably miscounted data before they could shut me down! (I mean come on, how can you download that much on Edge!?)
/end rant lol. I am COMPLETELY dataless now. I can't even send or receive MMS at the moment. Next weeks adventure: Straight Talk! Tune in next week same time and same place!
Dictated, not read :good:
Just about the same thing happened to me on simple mobile. They say its unlimited, but like every other prepaid company they will reserve the right to suspend or terminate your data if you "violate their terms & conditions."
After that happened, I made the switch to T-mobile pre-paid $70 plan. Up to 5gb at 4G, which is great because now I know I can tether, watch videos, stream music, or whatever I want for just 10 bucks more than simple mobile's gimmicky scheme they got going.
I'm fixing to go to a Tmo store and see if I can get a prepaid sim cheap for a few days. I am STILL waiting on my straight talk sim and my SimpleMobile crippled plan is about to expire. I figure that I'll just pay as I go on one of those daily plans until I get the Straight Talk up and going. That way if I hate Straight Talk too, I can just go to Monthly 4G on Tmo.
I've had this happen to me before, too. My first week with Simple Mobile I had used up 3GB of data and they completely cut me off as well. Server side, too. I called and called, but there was nothing I can do. They told me I violated their terms and conditions. They tried to tell me Pandora and youtube violate their terms and conditions. B.S.! I used my device as I normally would have! That's just how I roll...
Does anyone know if these are grounds for a class action suit against Simple, seeing as they advertise "Unlimited High Speed Data", yet they start cutting you off after you hit 2 Gigs. 2,048MB is not even CLOSE to infinity!

I think we're more or less stuck.. It's kind of like accepting the terms and conditions to any Apple service, you're screwed
I have got my straight talk up and working, but I don't live in a 3G area so I won't be able to test it any time soon.
Resurrecting an old thread...
This is my first month with Simple ($40 "unlimited" 3G.) But caps aren't a problem for me. My month is up next week and so far I've only used 353 MB. Starting today, Simple's $40 plan will also include 250 MB at 4G before throttling down to 3G/EDGE/whatever. Anyways, the reason I'm raising this thread from the dead is because SM's website says "**4G High Speed Data available only on HSPA+ compatible phones." Seeing as our phones are HSDPA, what speeds should I expect? Would I even notice an improvement? (Currently getting 300 Kb/s down and up on what they call a 3G network.)

I just bought a 99c Simple Mobile SIM, and plan on activating a T989 on the $40 "unlimited" plan. I'll likely use less than 2GB per month, not really sure. I'm expecting that the $40 plan (w 250MB 4G, then throttle) is the same as the $50 plan from T-Mo (w 100MB 4G, then throttle, right?
Tmo $30 5GB 4G plan was great for data, but not for VOIP. Just couldn't seem to get GrooveIP or Talkatone or SIP working well enough to keep the plan.

I wouldn't go so far to say Simple's 4G/3G is the same as T-Mobile's 4G/3G. They (Simple) are most likely throttling more than T-Mobile would. I'm not sure if my ~300 Kb/s on Simple can even be called "3G"
Yea they're dicks, I've been with them now for a year using their 3g plan. Never got **** for data usage... go onto 4g (to try out) and they threatened to chop off my ding dong if I went over the 2gb limit. My solution... go back to 3g and not get **** from them

I was on a 2 gig then throttle plan with t-mo, we had a falling out and settled, part of which was them putting me into their new unlimited 4g.
Over ten gigs thus far and no throttle, when it shows up on my bill in a few cycles it'll be $20 a month for real unlimited.
No sure if simple is throttling the same way t-mo did, but I noticed you talking about a big t-mo plan for data, just go with unlimited for $20 and you'll be straight.

Simple Mobile Unlimited Data Scam
I would like to be the one to start the process of finding people with this same issue of FRAUD committed by SIMPLE MOBILE. My story is of very similar nature.
The attached link is a u-tube video that shows the same frustration we have all been going through.
w ww.youtube.com/watch?v=UjvvMHADHVw
If I pay in full for a full month up front for a service plan that promotes and promises an unlimited (infinite) data usage , I expect to get what I paid for. If such service is taken away from me before my paid month is complete, from the company it was purchased from, with no real explanation and all money was kept without any refund; I BELIEVE THIS IS CALLED STEALING!!!
If a company sells you something and you receive less of that something you were told you would receive, that is fraud.
Fraud and stealing is illegal.!!!!
Suspending an "unlimited" data service for the reason of "over usage". This deception is called fraud!!!
If you have been deceived by Simple Mobile's "unlimited" LIMITED service and would like to be part of a class action law suit to help show them how wrong it is to steal from their own customers; Please e-mail: [email protected]

Hey Guys -
I am a bit worried... I know that we are supposed to have unlimited data through sprint... but I wouldn't be suprised if they pull an AT&T and limit people to 2GB...
AT&T argue that "hardly anyone uses 2GB on their phone" - but I have now used 1.6 GB in 8 days... What would be on my phone that uses that much data?! The only thing I can think of is Pandora but theres no way that uses 1.6GB...
I guess it's probably QIK now that I think about it - so if QIK uses 1.6GB that fast (I have uploaded quite a few videos and use this often)... if Sprint ever does throttle internet (which is on their playbook)... they will be throttling their video chat customers instantly..
Sucks to be iPhone uses with this "Face Time" i guess thats why they are limiting it to WiFi... cause if they didn't - all their customers would have data overages every month!
Hah - 1 up for Evo
I'm with you on this one, since I got my evo i've used 1.66gb Though I checked sprints 'plan optimizer' and I have used 1.8gb each month on average over the last year
I'm hoping I don't hit the cap and have to kill my data till it resets lol
In sprints new data format for data cards, they only have the 2gb limit on 3g, 4g is still unlimited, the majority of the us should have 4g within a year or so, so I wouldn't worry too much about it
-------------------------------------
Jramz, sent from my evo with swype.
Evo 4g
Root w/ perma-recovery & unlocked nand
Fresh Evo 0.2
You know... if at&t says the majority never will go past 2 gigabytes... why have the cap in the first place huh?
actually jramz its 5gb for 3g. unlimited for 4g.
but if they ever did, theyd wait for verizon or somebig name to do it before them one more time, and if they did 3g would probably be limited while 4g unlimited.
sprint has no plans on throttling data....and no plans to get rid of our unlimited data....i wouldn't worry about it...
Indeed. I just checked my personal details and I have used 282 mobile-mobile, 10 n/w, 60 land line, 50 texts, and a WHOOPING 3.2GB of data in 10 days. I have been using SprintTV to broadcast the FIFA games in the lab (ATT could not even get a signal in there and I get 3G good enough for video in there).
Oh yeah, I have been using the 4G as my data connection at home since it gets 5.5-7 mbps at my house rather than the measely 3.2 from Comcast. Comcast is getting cut at the beginning of July. I cut ATT and all my Apple products at the beginning of this month. Slowly, but surely I am getting rid of Evil, Frustration, and Big Bills in favor of fairness, open source, and portability. Sprint + Clear FTW!!!!!

When I hit 35 gigs last month 4 days before my bill cycle date Sprint shut off my ability to use EVDO. I wonder if forcing evdo will get around this? I think if I try to force evdo I will simply have no internet.
I think I am grandfathered in the truly unlimited internet access. I have never used over 30 gigs in one month before. I am surprised they did did this to me. I even drove to the base of the tower and reset my phone and checked to make sure forcing rome was off. Then the night my new bill cycle started at midnight I was surfing and watching the 1x on my phone. Sure enough it changed to EV at 12:01 Am. HA Proof. Sprint didnt charge me or contact me about it as of today its been 3 days since my bill came in. HmmView attachment 564921
as a fellow "power user", i can say, dont worry about it. they've never throttled me. one time i felt like they were and i just pulled the battery for about 7 or 8 minutes (until tv went back to commercials) and it fixed right up
They did it again. Twice more. When I hit 30 gigs im stuck at 1x till my bill cycle starts over. Sprint 15 year old plan.
My land line company finally got DSL to my neck of the jungle so I dont need to tether any longer. Now that I dont need more then 2GB per line Im Ditching my $350 six line 6,000 minute Sprint plan for Straight Talk. Im loosing insurance, roadside assistance and reducing my bill. Sprint has very bad reception in Hawaii.
Yeah i was reading that this is what Verizon is preparing to do.
http://the-gadgeteer.com/2012/06/13/verizon-unveils-new-share-everything-plan/
Hopefully sprint is not a follower and decide to screw us by limiting our data use.
I hope they don't follow those data cap. The only reason I'm with sprint is unlimited data coz signal and internet speed are the worst of all.

with the release of the iphone 5 i highly doubt that will happen any time soon.
right now, they're in third place with the major cell service providers and it's the one that distinguishes them from the pack or the biggest providers. If they do, there's time till to do so.
I think(I could be wrong) I read somewhere that sprint cap is only for those who use phone as a modem, phone internet use is not capped
I found out that the cheap prepaid plan with Straight talk at wallmart should have an internet speed 15 times faster then Sprint. And that got me thinking. Well sprint says they dont throttle but I know they do. They did it to me 3 times. I ditched them for a cheaper prepaid phones from wallmart. I had 6 lines with Sprint for 15 years. I Finally have DSL now so I no longer have to rely on sprints so called unlimited data. My new phone service has way better reception on the Big Island then sprint does. And its internet speed is faster then my DSL. I am getting 6835kbps down and 1050kbps up on my new (but old) Samsung Galaxy II skyrocket with there bring your own phone plan at $45 a month. Down side is rumor has it that its caped at 100 mega bytes a day with a max of 2 GB a month. I have not pushed those limits yet.
So I just signed up for at&t right after the unlimited data plan was retired.. But I heard the at&t unlimited data plan might be pulling a jay-z (comeback) ..
Does anyone know if this is true? Its all I need to be 100% happy/satisfied with my captivate..

lol, I feel ya. Sort of...I have the unlimited plan
But you'd be surprise how many people don't even come close to the 2gb plan. I use the tethering moderately and stream pandora quite a bit, and there's only been a handful of times that I went over the 2gb mark. I'd say for the majority the 2gb is enough, plus they are offering another extra 2gb. I just don't like how they are charging extra for the tethering.
I also have the unlimited and I can admit I never come close to the 2GB.
There will be a day that even the grandfathered unlimited plan will be terminated one way or another. AT&T's network congestion means it should never offered unlimited plan to begin with.
Verizon actually made it clear, even though it offer unlimited for new iPhone users, top 5% of the data users will be throttled. I sense AT&T will soon follow suit.
If 2GB is not enough for you today, you're on the way to be throttled soon.

Same here - never reachd 2gb... but I need it for peace of mind. I don't have even check what I've used on my phone. I have to worry constantly about my wife and daughter going over their limits. In fact, my wife accidently went over her 200mb limit by using DroidTV and not having it set for "Wifi Only", coupled with her WIFI settings still at the default setting of "Turn off WIFI when screen goes off" instead of "Never". Even if she was set at 2gb I could see an accident like this happening and costing extra money.
AT&T claims that they notify you when you reach 60%, 90% and 100% of your limit. This is bullsh*t. They don't. First, data use reporting is about 12 hours behind. You can blow your cap by quite a bit in 12 hours. Next, when she went over 200, they sold her another 200 for $15 without any text. I believe this can happen up to 5 times ($90 for 1.2gb). 12 hours later she got a text and I got an email saying she was nearing her limit - but the limit she was nearing was 400mb (the second set of 200mb). We were never informed as she blasted right past the first 200mb. Thank goodness she only had a couple movies set to download. If she had a series recording it would have cost a fortune.
I want to set a hard limit and then have data shut off at that point. Don't sell me extra data automatically. Maybe for technical reasons, they don't know for 12 hours... so they once they find out turn off my data and don't charge me for the overage. Until they can and will do this, I don't think they should be selling limited data plans. Until they can send you warnings in a timely manner, they shouldn't be selling limited data plans.
To AT&T's credit, I was able to retroactively change her data plan to the 2gb plan back to the beginning of my billing cycle - so the mistake cost me $10. Now out of piece of mind I will probably have to keep her at the 2gb plan even though in the past she's never even come close to the 200mb.
RE: Verizon "unlimited"... I can understand temporarily throttling back a heavy user maybe for few hours or days, but not for the rest of the billing cycle and definately not for the next billing cycle. Can you imagine you make one mistake like my wife did and have your speed crippled for up to 2 months? How can they even legally cripple service for a future billing period?
This is important for us to follow because AT&T is probably watching this approach closely and will eventually adopt it for us as well.

5% is a huge number of customers - probably a lot of them being business customers. Once enough people get throttled back Verizon may have to rethink this approach. Consider what Comcast did. They went from unlimited to 250gb. That's a very reasonable limit that certainly doesn't catch 5% of their internet customers. Of course as time goes by they will have to adjust that 250 up or they will start catching more and more customers.
I don't think they've defined what they consider heavy users yet. It must be pretty low to include 5% of data users.
An even better option would be data buckets, where your unused data rollsover. I've gone near the 200mb cap quite a few times since the default settings cleverly turn off wifi when the phone sleeps

"Demographic Research" is why we have the 2gb plan in the first place.
That's why I believe the unlimited plan will be eventually phased out also. Yea, their offering the unlimited plan again, but to me that's mostly PR to get more customers because cases like this: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/04/verizon-breaks-first-day-sales-record-with-iphone-4-pre-orders/ I don't really know how truthful that is, since corporate tend to inflate stats for the press.
But competition is good for the consumers, as long as both these billion dollar companies are in high competition, it should be easier on the wallet for us. Hoping...but still believe they are ripping us off as consumers (and I will keep the reasons why to myself, I've seen what it did to the other threads )
These are all opinions, and I take your posts as opinions. So...can we keep this civil. The other threads I've seen regarding this subject matter tend to get heated, which I do avoid (I have enough drama in my life
I believe that the limited plans were and still are a great idea. 2 gigs is a ton of data in my opinion.I rarely every go above 1 a month and I am on my phone a fair amount. It just all depends how much data people want. and lets face it the people who want and need the unlimited plan are the 1-5% of people that killed at &ts wireless network speed by streaming 1080p content for several hours a day

I don't think the limited plan is a bad idea, but I do see the amount going up and up. Since mobile internet access will exceed home internet access in the future, in my opinion. Which in turn costing us more and more.
As richb500 said, it is important to follow this and see what AT$T does.
When I was following the Fuze/Tilt2 forums it was pointed out that the is no true unlimited plan. The plan is called unlimited but in the TOS it states that over 5G of data transfered ATT can terminate your service.
All carriers have that clause in their respective TOS.
I have the old unlimited plan and have gone ovef 5G once but repeated go over 4G and never got any warning messages about my use.
Just a word of caution.
Sprint seems to be very loose with enforcement. A co-worker has an EVO and uses upwards of 20G a month using it has a hotspot and has never been warned about abusive use which is again in the Sprint TOS.

shouldn't have to terminate it.
if they weren't greedy and shortsighted they could get most to move over voluntarily with the right incentives.
For Example - Anyone with unlimited who is willing to Renew a new 2 year contract on their voice and take a capped data plan gets to choose any At&t Phone @ no cost with the upgrade. Couple this with informing users that stay on the unlimited they will face throttling if it is abused....(soft cap of 5 or 6 gb).
75% or more would likely take advantage if they could get the latest phone for free (iphone, atrix, whatever else comes down the pike).
Couple it with a marketing campaign to the effect of TETHER AWAY. No charges for tether as we respect your right to use the full potential of your phone. Give 250mb data free to all smartphone users. Offer 2gb @ $25 and 4GB @ 45$ (same as tether pricing but removes the stigma and bad taste of being charged for something that costs them nothing and is a native capability of the OS/Device). Keep the $10 overage charge per every GB of data over the cap.

UPDATE: i called AT&T just for kicks to see if there were a unlimited data plan no one knew about.. turns out there isnt for us smartphone customers but there is for NON Smartphone customers because they use less data.. wtf..
Can we LIE and say we are not a smartphone, say we're on some ol' school slidey phone or something and get that plan!? lol..
Good for us consumers, but anyone that is like me that uses 1GB a day with ease "when you are at work with nothing better to do then surf the net, and watch movies" it becomes a problem, lucky I have unlimited data though and I don't see why they don't sell it to more customers because most who have it don't use nearly that much so its extra money in the pocket

The unlimited data plan offering is not official, and I don't think customer service will know anything until Verizon iphone official launch date. What I've been reading (ex.) http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/at-t-quietly-matching-vzws-unlimited-data-plan-for-iphone/9317
But this is only a business move, in my opinion, since there are certain criteria you must meet to get back the unlimited plan.
And for your question: No you can't lie about not having a smartphone, when actually you are using a smartphone, they will know.
Posting this here since it's specific to the Inspire, but it applies to AT&T's smart phone policy in general. I'm looking for input from those of you who have managed to somehow get your data plans grandfathered successfully.
Here's the deal.
After some 6 years with Cingular/AT&T, four years of which were off contract while using a Kaiser (not a Tilt) and HD2 (Telstra) I upgraded last month to the Inspire. While I have no beef with the phone, I do have a problem with the data plan.
My problem is this. I'm 'Goldilocks'. I need a plan that's "juuuust right" for me, but AT&T is hammering me into one of three cubbyholes, none of which fit my needs.
I have spent over two hours on the phone over the past couple weeks with line reps and one supervisor to explain to them that for those 4 years I was on a MEdia Net unlimited plan at $20/month, never did I exceed 200MB of data. In fact, there were months when I used no data or text at all, but still paid for the plan. But my concern is that I can see exceeding 200MB/month on occasion with the new phone, therefore my point to them is that they should let me use the MEdia Net plan, or risk losing my account entirely.
So after all that time on the phone and almost two weeks of waiting for them to see what they were going to do, they 'Grandfathered' me into a $30/month unlimited data plan with no text.
Now, I don't mind paying another $5/month more than I used to, to cover myself for up to 2Gig of data, though I doubt I'd ever use that much. For my usage pattern, 2Gig is virtually unlimited to me. But I have no messaging units and I resent spending $10 for 1000 messages when I only use about 20 or so per month.
What I'd be perfectly content with is $25/month for 2Gig and 200 (or even just 50!) messages. But none of the rocket scientists there can figure out how to make it happen. Interestingly enough, Tmobile is offering $80/month with unlimited data, unlimited voice and unlimited texting.
So, here I am with these choices:
1) Take the $25/month plan and just tell my friends to not text me as much anymore.
2) Take the $30/month unlimited plan and use the crap out of it just for spite.
3) Tell AT&T to go pound salt, return the phone, revert to my MEdia Net plan and use my Kaiser until I go with Tmobile at $80 unlimited for voice/data/text and get the upcoming HTC Sensation
Hoping y'all have some advice for me.
Thanks!
Sign up for the 200mb plan. If you exceed your data, you can retroactively upgrade to the 2gig plan for $25 and not pay any overage.
And then you can lower it down to the 200mb plan for the next billing cycle.
Edit, also, with unlimited data from tmobile, you get 2gigs of full speed data, after which you are throttled until the end of the billing cycle.
I was with Cingular when it started and then AT&T when they bought 'em. I was lucky enough when my wife and I got our first iPhone 3g's we got the unlimited plan. At that time, texting was included. A few years later, while upgrading our phones...they told us that the unlimited data would stay the same, but we would have to pay for the texting...so we got the Unlimited Texting Family Plan. Its a few dollars more, but well worth it.
I say go for it!
Get the 2 gig plan for 25...its 10 bux for each gig after...So what...... i pay 5 dollars a month for 200 text messages. I can still see that offer when I hit upgrade.
Perhaps the bigger question is why do you need a smart phone since you don't want to pay for the best features. Internet, email, texting....

Only partially correct. Here it is, straight from the AT&T website:
On the 200MB plan:
DataPlus 200MB for Smartphone includes 200MB. Once 200MB is exceeded, an additional 200MB is automatically provided at a rate of $15 for each additional 200MB provided. Unused data usage does not carry over. For HSPA+/4G SmartPhones ONLY.
On the 2G Plan:
DataPro 2GB for HSPA+/4G Smartphone includes 2GB. Once 2GB is exceeded, an additional 1GB is automatically provided at a rate of $10 for each additional 1GB provided. Unused data usage does not carry over. For HSPA+/4G SmartPhones ONLY.
So, you're right, but only as it applies to the 2Gig plan at $25/month.

Maybe you missed my point. I am willing pay for data. In fact, if anything, I have overpaid. My problem is that I'll probably use a bit more than the $15 plan, but not as much as the $25 plan. I wouldn't even mind it so much if they bumped me automatically to the 2G plan and charged me an extra $15 on those months where I go over the 200MB base plan. But it's the little 'scumbaggy' business of giving the modest users the shaft. Does the first byte of data over 200MB cost any more to deliver than the first byte of data over 2 Gig? Of course not. Yet they charge $15/200MB (7.5 cents/meg) for those on the base plan, and $10/GIG (ONE CENT PER MEG!!!) for those on the 2G plan. I'd really like to hear the explanation for how they justify charging nearly EIGHT TIMES the rate per meg for data overages from one plan as opposed to the other.
I work for an AT&T Authorized Reseller. IMHO take the $30 Data package if you are offered it.
As long as you can keep the Unlimited Package use the crap out of it. It really is true from what I see that the overwhelming majority (not on XDA of course) will never approach the 2GB threshold. If, however, you want to use your phone for something other than Facebook and TXTing having the Grandfatherd $30 Unlimited is SOOO worth it!
Even if you returned the phone at this point, you would be in for a hella battle with Customer Service to get your MediaNet Unlimited re-instated. In retrospect I would have purchased the phone outright without anyone touching your account. You may not have had "4G" provisioned on your phone, but thats what WiFi's are for.
Hope this helps a little ...

Ah, an expert authority!
Yes, the unlimited plan at $30 is an option in my 'features' section in the web account manager.
Well, here's the deal. I can still return the phone, revert to my previous plan by using my Kaiser, then next month go with Tmobile and an HTC Sensation for $80 a month for unlimted data/text/talk. And since AT&T will be buying Tmoble shortly, I'll have the benefit of the expanded network when customer accounts are migrated.
Does that make sense in your experience, or am I overthinking this?
I gotta say with your story I would return the phone and wait for the sensation. Don't get me wrong the inspire is the best phone I have ever owned and I love it but if I had the choice to revert to my captivate for a couple months and didn't have a family plan with ATT I would be gone. Tmobile has faster hspa and has way higher customer satisfaction not to mention that the sensation is gonna be the best thing out, and will probably stay that way for a while. And to top it all off this time next year your quad band sensation, that's assuming that's what tmobile is getting, you will have the benefit of two networks combined. Look at this way, no matter what you do u will be with ATT this time next year lol.

Just noticing you live in Milford .... g'luck with TMobile there. Check with a friend who has them how decent the service is for them.
Huge fan of Tmobile and Sprints pricing ... but living the past few years in cities that are sub-metropolitan areas their service is spotty at best.
Also, going with the $30 Unlm Smartphone Data and Rooting your Inspire you will have the ability to WiFi Hotspot your android device w/o AT&T caching on (as long as you are not using it excessively). Don't use to stream Netflix on the old Laptop, but excellent for iPad or Nook use.
Hope this is helpful as this is my 10th post so I may now comment in the Dev Forms.
Happy Rooting!!!

Point taken, but I have a 10MB cablemodem connection and wifi at home, so I'm pretty much covered in the voice/data department. Already rooted and running RCMix 5.9.x so wifi router is there, though I have to admit I haven't bothered testing it yet.
Anyway, you make sense. Utica, huh? Still got snow up there?
Sadly snowed this morning ... thought about crying.
If/when you get bored with that ROM consider the MIUI ROM. Battery life is recently meh but it so much fun... screams like an eagle and purrs like a kitten ... feels like an iPhone OS without the awful and has widgets and folders!
Enjoy!
i have been browsing this forum, and i haven't seen anyone mention that they have a preferred data plan.
however, tmobile does offer a $20 preferred android unlimited plan. it can be acquired by calling tmobile retentions department and just asking nicely!
this plan satisfies the data requirement that is needed for the $200 upgrade price on the g2x.
hope this was a help!
More details? I pay 59.99 a month for 1000 minutes and unlimited text/data 4g with the even more plus plan. Would I benefit?
Is it still throttled?
When I was at Tmobile, the store manager said I have to get the 4G plan to get 4G data. I told him I already got Android plan and he insisted to change the plan to 4G. He said there is no different in price (My Android plan was $25 )
Congrats. You've just been throttled to 2GB.

Im also on the same 19.99 android data plan. It was given to me after complaining about the 4G/3G coverage in my area.
And data is still throttled after 5GB to a speed of dial up.
I called and had the $20 preferred android added on. The first time I called, the rep insisted on renewing my contract to 2 years, I declined, and called back an hour later. The 2nd rep added on and the whole conversation took less than 3 minutes.
Just want to throw that out there, so you don't renew your contract.
I signed up for the $60 1500 minutes + unlimited text special, and then the unlimited (5GB) data for $20.
A few days later they switch the same plan around to "unlimited" everything for the same combined price ($80)
I tried switching but my data plan would change to $30 instead of $20 for some reason.

No.
In fact you would end up on the 2gb throttle at that point.

Im confused. The $80 includes unlimited data, right? I mean thats how it was when I went in today. 79.99 for unlimited text/talk/data
Oh they'll say unlimited data. I haven't seen a single "unlimited" data plan without some sort of throttling to 2G built in.

Sometimes they will throttle you, sometimes they wont. Is it really easy to go over 2GB without even using the tethering/hotspot capabilities?

Yes, true. Go look at their website. They started the unlimited everything for 79.99 right before the G2x launched and suckered people into a 2gb throttled plan.
I, unfortunately, am one of them.

Very easy if you're into youtube or slacker radio on high quality
This looks pretty good to me, but I have two questions:
I just got the g2x, and it's my first android phone so I'm not too familiar with what's a normal amount of data usage. If I will just be using my phone for web browsing and twitter and facebook with light photo uploading, and occasional youtube, will 2gb be enough? Right now I get 200 mb.....so anything would be better.
Also, is there a special number I should call for retentions, or do I just call customer service and ask about the plan?

Tmobile.c om has a meter at which they calculate data usage under different scenarios. Give that a try. From my personal experiences with data usages on a smart phone, 200mb is not nearly enough to be satisfied. Watching youtube for 10-15 mins can already take up a chunk of your limited 200mb. If you're going to stick with that plan then i suggest you use wifi whenever you're able to.
I don't think there is a specific number for their retention lines. You can just dial 611 on your tmobile activated cell and ask to be transferred to retentions.
I am currently on a preferred data plan for $20 and unlimited family text for $10. I'm not to sure what they would give for a single plan. Ask about these deals.
Good luck. I hope you can get it all worked out fine!
I am confused????

Welcome and happy posting,
If you didn't change your plan then everything will stay exactly the way it was.
I also came from a rooted G1 and am using the old sim. Everything is working well.
I was reading about Data lags on the sensation but never noticed it on mine (Tmobile US) but I did notice that my "4G" speeds were incredibly slow and went through all the troubleshooting "Ciphering off/on radio off/on" "airplane mode on/off" "hard reset" "new sim card" ect.
Using the SpeedTest.Net App, I was getting about 1MB download and less than 1MB Upload. Sometimes I'd get 500KB Download. I called Tmobile Customer Service and they said that my current android plan "$35 Unlimited Data and Text" (even though my phone constantly shows 4G at the top) does not include 4G and I'd have to update to the new plan which includes 4G for $30 5GB Unlimited (wtf?) Data and $15 Unlimited Text"....so I changed it....2 hours later....
I'm still getting the same speed. <1MB Download <800KB Upload...
Any help guys? Did I pretty much just get ripped off? I'm on Tmobile US, in a 4G coverage area. --- What speeds are you guys getting?

Did you go over your limit? They will throttle you if you go above the 2gb/5gb/10gb
I'm currently throttled and only getting .5mbps down. sucks but I got throttled one week before my new cycle so hopefully it will go back up next week
Nope. Got the phone last week and Its been slow like that since. I called tmobile to check and see and they said I was well below my usage.
You shouldn't have changed your plan. There might be something wrong with the phone or the area you live in.
That's what I asked them, I said what if it's the phone and not my data plan. I told her that Tech Support doesn't know what the problem is but they just think that the plan is old and that's why its not on 4G, I asked if I still get the same problem can I change my plan back to the grandfathered plan, The rep said that she had a problem like that before and she switched her plan and she got fast speeds but if it doesn't get resolved she will note the account so that "special accounts care" MIGHT switch me back to my old plan.
Still slow speeds.
The feature your taking about, $30 for the 5G data is a Required feature if your on an old plan. You can switch to the $79.99 even more plan and that gives you unlimited talk text and 2GB web each month. if you choose to remain on the old plan, the 5GB $30 plan is the data plan we can add in the store.

My thing is, I had a plan for $35 Unlimited Data and Text but they said that doesn't support 4G so I changed the plan to $30 5GB and $15 Unlimited Text plan but the speeds are STILL the same.
I was wondering what everyone else's speed is and if I just got ripped off going into a new more expensive data plan yet receiving the same speed as my old cheaper plan.
It could be in the area your in, but just to be sure, go into your tmobile store and try speedtest while your there and also check the sensation they have in the store.

good idea checking the speed on theirs. But as far as area wise, I don't think its that. I live in Garland, Texas but go out all over the place for fun. So I go to Dallas, Rockwall, Fort Worth, and all these big cities and still, slow speeds.

they lied to you.
I am getting 6mb down on the unlimited G1 plan. I did switch sim cards and used the one in the box, but did a web chat to activate so I encountered no BS.
Real sorry about that...
Seriously,
ask for a floor manager, then ask the floor manager for their supervisor, don't stop until you get you plan back.
I got unlimited loyalty minutes $69 for 2 lines and $30 for unlimited text and data. mine data tally never shows any usage, it just says unlimited, doesn't show an amount just 0% used.
I was on the phone for 3 hours though showing my backside a couple years ago.
I got lucky I think, maybe I just feel lucky and have the same deal as the rest of the customers who were around back in the voicestream days before the tmobile buyoiut;
point is though, be nice and cool but persistent and keep asking for managers and supervisors until you get your plan back.
also,
always ask them to place a note on your profile saying what ever they promise.
good luck
and I'm out...
I have a feeling it is something with your phone.
I'm on the grandfathered $25 unlimited Android Data plan (5GB of 4G) and below are speeds I've gotten with 3-4 bars of 4G.
I live about 25 minutes outside of Milwaukee, WI.
5.5 - 10 Mbps download and .6 - 2.2 Mbps Upload

Just call and tell the rep you speak to that your account was changed in error and you do not want your data plan changed. If you are questioning the phone, get it replaced.

called tmobile again, talked to them and troubleshooted for about an hour, turning phone on and off, refreshing network ect. and still low speeds 600kbps download and 32 kbps upload. Asked if it could just be my phone and they said no. The tech is opening up a trouble shoot ticket, saying its probably a network error and I should wait up to 72 hours for a technician to come out to the area.
guess I'm waiting.

I will add to the confirmations that the plan or SIM doesn't matter. I use the $25 MyTouch 3g plan and I have an older "2g" SIM card in my Sensation. I average 6-7 Mbs bandwidth with max 10 Mbs seen so far.

I have to humbly disagree with you there...kinda.
I know some here have the same plan and situation you have and granted it works in your case, it is not really fair to say it works for all.
I came from a nexus one and simply changed my sim card over to the sensation on June 9. It worked fine until day 3. I think you have responded to a couple of my threads asking about the "android" vs grandfathered plans on the sensation but I do not recall what was said. Beside that, I was connected fine with my grandfathered data plan which I used with my old SE Xperia x1. It was called a 'smartphone' data plan, which cost 24.99/mo with 400 data texts. I have since replaced the sim that came with the box, made sure the IMEI's matched to their systems (which I think was the reason for the data cutoff) and now have a coded "android" plan.
From day 3, I have been on here asking people's opinions on, "data is data so our grandfathered plans should work no problem"....and to talking with tmobile cs, opening a trouble ticket because it came at the same time there was a problem outtage in my area (San Antonio, TX). I was told that the trouble ticket takes about 3 days to be addressed/resolved.
BUT on day 4 (day 2 of the trouble ticket), I called tmo cs again and got to the second level tech dept and had an in depth troubleshooting call with the extremely nice tech. Turned out she has an android device too so that helped things along.....The tech checked my trouble ticket but had a feeling that she could fix it so we agreed to go for the gusto. Upon tweaking the apn's and other settings, nothing worked even though I have the 4g icon up on my notification bar, just no data transfer. Before hanging up, I asked her about my grandfathered plan and was weary of getting the "suggested" android plans out there because there was nothing comparable to my grandfathered plan. She then went to her senior manager who is also nice and explained my situation. The rep came back to me and said I was right, the old grandfathered plans DO NOT work and any IMEI's that come back with incompatible data plans get disconnected.
So she and her manager saw that I was also a long time member of tmo for over 10 years and agreed to set me right and not have me pay more for a plan that I am getting less features on. The manager went and recoded my grandfathered plan to read Android instead of smartphone. (I am guessing this unlimited wording is 5gb and then throttles me but I am on wifi most of the time so it doesn't bother me) Two seconds later I got a sms from tmo welcoming to the android data plan.
About an hour later I found that my data was flowing again. So I must stress that even though your grandfathered plans may still work, do not be surprised if tmo disco's your data connection. You'll still make and receive calls, but data will be disco'ed.
But to the OP with slow data issues, have you changed the Sim card at all? I would advise against calling tmo and asking them to check the IMEI they have on file because I think that is what flagged my phone to begin with. And as for the data plan issue, you will need to come to grips with what works for you.
This may not be common, but I had to get a new SIM card for my N1 when they rolled out their HSDPA stuff locally I couldn't get any 3G at my apartment after they did; an updated/new SIM card fixed that issue.
As far as the plan, they tried to get me on the same gimmick; said that I should upgrade to the 4G plan etc etc...I politely refused it and im getting 6mbps here in Blue Bell, PA

Yeah they were trying to be nice & all, but seriously, Tmobile blocked all Sensation IMEIs that weren't on their newer plans to force you to "upgrade". It's not the CS reps fault though, but tmobile's & their wanting everyone on a tiered data plan. Your old plan was fine, even worked for a few days (like mine did) until tmobile flipped that lovely IMEI blocking switch.

Lets take a step back. What speeds were you seeing before with your old 3G phone? It's possible that you're just an area with slow speeds. If that's the case call and demand your old data plan back.
T-Mobile has done a lot of cleaning of data usage on their end.
Their new phones and systems are made with code that specifically disregard older data plan coding.
Basically this allows them to say that your old data coding is incompatible with the newer system they're using.
Just looking for you to pay more for less. ( T-Mobile loves AT&T )

I'm using a Sensation with an older Android plan ($24.99 + 400 Texts) and i'm also using a sim card from 2005. I have "4G" speeds. What everyone needs to realize is the technology is the same across the board. There is technically no such thing as 4G on the t-mobile network. If your old "3G" phone worked in your area, then your new "fake 4G" phone will work. If it doesn't then demand to talk to someone else until they fix it. T-mobile shouldn't be tricking anyone into upgrading to a 4G plan by saying it wont work, because that's 100% untrue. All t-mobile did was increase the bandwidth that their old cell-sites would operate at. If your device can handle the faster speeds then it will benefit from the bandwidth upgrade. If the device can't handle the extra bandwidth then it will connect at the fastest speed that it is physically capable of.
I can see T-Mobile's argument if their 4G was LTE or WiMax, but it's not. If T-Mobile wants to argue about 4G speeds then demand to keep your plan at 3G speeds. Their 3G devices would theoretically reach 7.2Mbs which i've only managed to beat once with this new phone, and that speed was 7.7Mbs.
Sorry for the long post. In short, don't give in and fight with them. They'll fix it. Keep escalating the issue until you reach their CIO if you have to.
