[Q] Nexus s battery drain pinned down, need assistance. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
a few weeks ago I posted here about having severe battery issues which fixed themselves in the end.
Now the issue keeps occurring but thanks to "BetterBatteryStats" I pinned down the service that is responsible.
Only Issue: How do I shut that bad boy down?
The process I am talking about is named "GTALK_ASYNC_CONN_com.google.android.gsf.gtalkservice.AndroidEndpoint"
well, of course after seeing this I disabled Account Sync and Google Talk(few days ago) which didn't do anything.
Then I downloaded "Autorun Manager" and disabled some of the processes that were titled "gtalk..." withing Google Services Framework.
Of course, that did not do anything.
Could anyone of you please explain what the - is happening?
These Wakelocks started occuring just some weeks ago and even across different roms.
Thank you in advance.

I had this issue in the past where my phone wouldn't go to sleep and this was one of the culprits. Hope it helps you. =)

May be too early to tell but phone still seems to be kept awake by something.
I still appreciate the advice!

Still GTALK_ASYNC_CONN? Make sure to reboot + plug and unplug phone after you've unchecked the backup so the BetterBatteryStats reset and you get a good reading instead of just guessing outright.

I just checked the normal battery stats and saw it was awake after I had the screen off for about 2 hours.
Just checked again still awake.

Was it just a small bar or was it a long one? Screenshot would really help there.

Hey, sorry quite a busy day/night.
Here is the screenshot I took just now.
I forgot to turn off WiFi overnight, but still too much awake.

Yikes! That's a lot.
Have you tried logging out of Latitude in Google Maps? Check that.
Also, try disabling "Use wireless networks" in Location & security settings.
As a last resort, you can freeze Google maps and reboot and see if it helps.

Latitude was logged in? That's one of the biggest drain about Maps! I should have asked you earlier. Hopefully this fixes your problem for good. You can re-enable the wireless networks location option if you see you need it.

Battery ran low and I let it charge overnight.
It's 35minutes off the charger and seems to still be awake occasionally. (Too early to tell really)
Will report back asap.
EDIT: Completed the battery cycle and it was still awake all the time.
This is really frustrating.

I really hate to [BUMP] threads but I want to start a last effort and hope someone sees this and may know the cause.
I also uninstalled Google Maps completely which didn't change anything.

Still the same things in battery info and betterbatterystats?
Edit: Are you logged out of Google Talk?

Yes, nothing new so far, same battery usage/wakelocks by the same processes.
I have completely disabled Google Talk.

try to disable settings -> audio -> touch sounds and screen lock sound.

You mean you have logged out or you have frozen/uninstalled it?
Something else you can try, a bit of a hassle, but you can:
-Make sure backup is disabled for your phone
-Remove Google account
-Re-add Google account

[Q] Google+ App uses MASSIVE Data traffic

Hello togehter,
i have a real problem with my Nexus 5 (not rooted, 4.4.4) now.... appeard suddenly and i dont find a way to fix.
The problem is that from one day to the other the Google+ App uses big amounts of battery (up to 50% per load and sends massive amounts of data in background. I talk about up to 3 GB in 2 days (!). No i didnt made pictures that upload now and sync. I dont even use Google+ really, all i do is brwose the last 3 news once per day. Also this happens ONLY in background, when the mobile is in standby. As soon as i turn on the screen i can feel the battery is getting colder by alot (should be opposide...). Also it only shows me like 40 MB of foreground data the last days, so all ok when mobile on lol. It seems to start when going in standby...
What can it be? What i did:
1. Deleted cache of Google+ App
2. Restartet phone many times already
3. uninstalled updates of Google+ App (problem immediadetly disappeared, with this status Google+ didnt even show up in the battery list)
4. deleted data of Google+ Apps
5. put off photo-sync completley
Now all was fine, phone got cold again and data usage back to normal (i let it whole night). Then i installed the update again and problem suddenly start again, in the same second. Only in the last 20 minutes it uploaded 300 MB of data since i did the update.
When i dont do the update, there are errors using the app, so i would like to have the latest google+if possible.
I also have many other Devices like Nexus 7, Huawei P6 (4.4.2) and this is not happening with Google+ there, only n this Nexus 5. Even heere are only half of the apps installed as on the other devices.
Edit:
It gets even more funny... I turned of Wifi and witched to mobile data. Same moment it stopped to send data, even theres no restriction to do so. Like mentioned, Photo sync is off, not set to wifi only.
When switching back to wifi, the data sending starts again lol... What the hell?
OK I really something is very wrong with my device.... Look at following pics, WiFi is turned off the whole 4 hours, still it shows up with so many %, that cannot be normal...and it also shows up as activated all the time, even its not.
Then I really wonder how the battery holds so well in mobile network, I mean 1% battery drain per hour with everything activated is not really bad, isn't it? But then you see next PIC...the phone never sleeps lol. Never saw this many wakeloks without it affecting battery.
I think I have to make a reset...

thats google play service, a known issue, not g+. are you on android 444 yet?
Its Google + in this case. The pic doesnt show it. It shows the time when the bug not appears, when in mobile internet mode. If the drain appears its Google + that's on top of the list. And this drain happens as soon WiFi is activated.

in g+ setting, it sounds like you hve this enabled..
I agree my original post is long but in point 5 I said I put off that sync completely. Autobackup=off. So I guess this option has no effect anymore, shouldn't it?
But I saw this option in another place, that is the gallery itself. If I go to gallery and settings there's another photo sync, why? And why this one will be turned on even if the one in the other app is off?

Turn off constant WiFi scanning in advanced option in WiFi menu. As default it is enabled(!).
This option allows Google services constant scanning, even when you turn off WiFi switch.
When you disable that option battery should stay alive longer.
And for Google+ issue - I had similar problem. Turn off 'background data' option for Google+ - it helps.
Google+ buffers your pictures from backup (like a cache). By turning off background data - it shouldn't take place when app is closed.
Well, this is looked into by a Google support guy now. Sadly all that doesn't help. Also hardresets won't. Nothing did. They get into error reports and all that now but probably change my phone, according to him.
I made a topic about in on Google+ itself, I'll post link later.

Wich setting you mean with that? Where can i find it?
Its really unbelievable... The problem still remains, even after days of chat with google support directly. Not sure whats going on but i cannot think about how this can be hardware related and the other problem is that if i want to exchange it Amazon will probably laugh at me, since theres no visible error.

This was another advice that didnt help:
- go to your device settings
- go to Applications
- Find the Google+ App
- uninstall all updates for the google+ app
- clear app data
- Go to the play store
- go to my apps
- update your apps from the play store
- go to your device settings
- scroll to account
- tap into google
- tap into your email address
- ensure all boxes are checked.
- especially the google+ photos and Autobackup
- ensure sync is on
it should work as per normal now.
- go to google+ app
- log into app
- ensure settings are to your requirements
- go to the Photos app
- go to the left side menu
- go to On Device
- if the Autobackup Cloud icon is highlighted blue tap it to switch it off for a particular folder that you don't want to be backed up.
This is optional
- go back to the Google+ app
- From the settings go to the autobackup settings
- select the option to backup all photos now do not dismiss the notification for it.
Do all the steps described you don't have to do the optional one, but please ensure that you do the steps in that order.
10 hours after doing this it happened again and in one hour 1 GB of data was recieved, battery down 20% more and phone hot. In Standby mode...
Support has all the bug reports i made, seems either they dont find something or i dunno, at least i didnt hear from them since days now....
Maybe someone of you can see something? This bug report is of a time after the suggested advice from the google support. It was ok many hours, then i charged the phone to 100%, went to bed and 4 hours later when i woke up i saw that mobile again is hot, google at top positions and 2 GB data gone.

So what in all names is left for me? I have a hard time explaining Amazon that i really have a problem..
And i know there is something wrong because NONE of my other devices with the exactly same settings on the exactly same account this happens. On some like my Nexus 7 i have 2 more google+ accounts added to the one i use on the problem Nexus 5 and absolutley no drain here..
Ok i just scrolled through the bug report myself and i see that there are TONS of supends and task restarts until line 52710.217422, starting far up from that line, for some hours. Someone familiar with entries like that?

Just to let others know if they read this and have the same by any chance.
The problem was not related to any setting that was wrong or anything like that. It seems the updates (from 4.3 to 4.4.3 to 4.4.4) caused some errors when i installed them in fast order. Google Support read my logs and it seems there were many errors overall that doesnt really make sense.
So after even all the hardresets, google-tips and cache wipes didnt bring any outcome i tried to flash a factory image instead of only a hardreset, this time directly 4.4.4 and now after one week i think i can say the error is gone. I neither had any Drain from Google+ nor my Telephone service acted up. I charged 3 times now the last week and also after charging (where the error appeared before) nothing is out of order.
Hi to all, I'm having the same issue with my Nexus 5; large amount of data downloaded on wifi. In 8 hours something like 10 GB of data transferred but free space on my device remain the same
I disabled Google+ from TIB, but I like it and this is only a workaround

Memory Leak still present??? Launcher redraw, stuttering, lag

So my Nexus 5 starting to have some crazy redraws on the launcher and really began to stutter and lag. i wasn't sure what it was so i did some searched online and found out that there was a memory leak bug in the developer preview of L. It appears at least in my experience the bug is still there.
What happens is if you go to your settings/apps and look at what's "running" you'll find that "system" hogs up a MASSIVE amount of ram after 1-2 days of usage. If you do a reboot you'll find it starts off ~200mb which seems reasonable. the screenshot i've attached is after about 14 hours of usage after a reboot and i'm at roughly 540mb of usage. I'm sure by tonight i'll be at roughly 800mb and the redraws are going to start as the OS starts to close apps etc. Which is when a reboot will be needed.
Curious to see what your system ram usage's are after a few days use and if you're experiencing similar lag/stuttering/redraws as well.
Star here if you experience this as well:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79729
UPDATE 11/28/2014 - 73 hours uptime
Ram usage now around 900-1gb for system. Redraws are occurring on launcher here and there now. Issue still present or working as intended I have no idea at this point.
UPDATE 11/26/2014 - 27 hours uptime
Ram usage hovering around 600mb for system. Still no redraws. Looks as if the services update changed the priorities so that launcher doesn't redraw at least. Haven't noticed any slowdowns either.
UPDATE 11/25/2014 - 14 hours uptime
Ram usage now at 700mb for system. No redraws yet.
UPDATE 11/25/2014 - 6 hours uptime
I updated today to google play services 6.5 and I know it's still early, but as of 6 hours uptime, my system is still hovering only around 180mb-250mb ram usage. Much more normal! yay. fingers crossed to see after a few days.
UPDATE
Coming up on close to two days uptime, 33 hours and system ram usage is now close to 800mb.

I haven't noticed this, mine is using 359M of RAM I have been running for 36 hrs now. Did you factory reset after updating to Lollipop?
I didn't want to factory reset since that would defeat the purpose of the OTA....what I did do was clear cache.
Sometimes OTA's makes a factory reset necessary unfortunately. It can cause issues. Specially such a big update as this.
Perhaps I will do a factory reset and see what happens, but in the meantime still curious to see if anyone else is having this issue as well.

yup, those were the exact sources I was reading that there were issues. I was surprised there wasn't a separate thread about it more recently since the official deployment of L so wondered if it was only isolated cases.
I've read very few that has had the issue. Definitely not a widespead issue as we would had been flooded with threads by now then. So I would try a reset and that will most likely fix it.
I believe my device has memory leak issue too. I did a fresh flash from factory image and launcher will start to redraw everytime i press home after about 1 day usage.
I mainly only use it to play boom beach and hay day and surf webs.

Check your system ram usage when it starts to redraw and report back.
I can't believe this only effects a few people. This has to be a bug everyone is experiencing sooner or later. Maybe many people don't even notice. But for me it's the most annoying thing about lollipop. I hope a fix is coming soon.

This honestly may be a strange solution to this problem buuuut.... Out of curiosity when I noticed on android police's website that there was a new play services update. Keep in mind im on official lollipop with all the terrible lag and battery issues too, but once I updated to the latest services apk and rebooted everything was buttery smooth again just like (or even better the kk) seems like the nexus really is a "google" phone now. Hope it helps!!

I'm also really looking forward to the new services update! unfortunately, you did reboot your phone. Not sure if it's the update that fixed it or the reboot cause rebooting does temporarily fix it for now.
I understand where your coming from. I did reboot and actually reflashed the images several times and still had the issues everyone else seems to have. Updated the apk and wallah! Weird I know but worked for me ha
I did a manual flash from google factory images. I even have the latest google play services. A reboot does fix the problem temporarily. It seems like whenever I drive in my car (nav, waze music ect) I lose memory like crazy and many things in the apps menu including the launcher says restarting and everything is laggy as crap until I restart my phone again. I'll grab screen shots next time to show.

Memory Leak
HOLY COW..!! This is true after one day of usage ,if i check for available ram is shows only 500mb...YES System eats about 1GB RAM....I hav upgraded my cell with OTA..But no luck....When i was on KITKAT i always used to get 1.2GB FREE RAM..Lollipop sucks about this RAM issue...lets hope google will fix this issue soon!!
I have this ****ing and anooying issue and don't know how to solve. I have sometimes popups of clean master app saying "your memory is 85% full". After a reboot it works well for a few hours
I have it to.. Google is joking.
Waiting for Android 5.1

Unusual battery drain

I've been having this overnight battery drain. I've deleted apps, checked which setting is causing it and nothing. Last night I went to sleep with 91% and woke up with 62%. My thoughts are to reset the phone but I'd like to use all the alternatives before doing that.

I'm on marshmallow btw... 100% stock. It appears doze is not doing much. Instead it's draining the battery overnight.

Go to apps, and up in the right hand corner, click the 3 dot menu and click Configure Apps, and look and see which apps can ignore optimizations. An app that cam ignore optimizations is one that ignors Doze. Then under the General tab in settings, go check your memory. Another thing is a Ghost app. Some ghost apps are very good at running without your knowledge or the systems knowledge. To check, let your phone sit overnight in safe mode starting with 100% battery. This will disable all third party apps, including ghost apps or suspicious apps. To put it in safe mode.
With your device ON.
HOLD the power button till you see the options for power off, restart, or airplane mode.
Then tap and hold Power Off untill it pops up a dialogue confirming you want to restart your phone into Safe Mode and click yes. Once booted into safe mode let it sit with no apps running over night. If your battery is drained in the morning, then you have a technical problem. If its not drained, then you have a rogue third party app.

Go to apps, and up in the right hand corner, click the 3 dot menu and click Configure Apps, and look and see which apps can ignore optimizations. An app that cam ignore optimizations is one that ignors Doze. Then under the General tab in settings, go check your memory. I checked the ignore optimization list and everything is normal. The only ones that are checked are the default ones. I checked the memory and its normal. Android Os is taking the most. Last thing to do is the safemode part to see if a ghost app is running. Let's suppose is a ghost app whats causing troubles. How I detect it and delete it?

Its hard. My sisters S5 had one that was a widget that looked like her settings icon on her home screen but didnt show up in All Apps, but when you dragged it up to app info, it made it look like a system app. So check your home screens, then go (unfortunately) delete recent third party apps youv downloaded if not all of them.

Yup, good to see your operational.
The issue is happening again. My only alternative is to reset the phone to defaults. One time it even drain the battery overnight in battery saving mode.

Yea, do the reset, if that doesnt work, you are now looking at some serious problems. Even in lolliepop you could put your phone on stand by for a while and still have pretty decent battery. Your looking at a bad MM install, a constant running cpu (hardware problem) or one heck of a fluke (hopfully).

Yeah. My hopes are that some random app or something messed up the doze function on MM. And when the phone is in standby overnight it's not doing what it's supposed to do.

Question Battery info error

Since I upgraded to android 12 the battery information does not work correctly.
Does anyone know how to fix it?

I have this problem as well after debloating. It's driving me nuts, hopefully someone can list out what you shouldn't debloat in order for this battery usage to works.
I had exactly the same problem but in my case I still don't know if it was after debloating. Following a list in a Spanish forum, I removed several system apps and disabled others when I was still on Android 11, then I received the update to Android 12 + Realme UI 3.0 and everything seemed to work perfectly. I decided to do a factory reset only because there are functions not available like background streaming but I think it is due to the market where you bought the phone (in my case, Spain).
After that factory reset I discovered that the battery app had the same error that you mention. So I did a hard reset from the realme recovery menu but before that I tried, unsuccessfully, to "force quit" the battery app and also clear the cache. Only the new reset solved the battery problem but brought a new one: I couldn't install apps from unknown sources.
So I did a third and final factory reset, like the first time from the settings menu, and right now I think my phone is fully functional again. I did a new bloatware cleanup with ADB AppControl but less intense than the first two times, although the problem I had with the battery didn't happen with the second reset and on that occasion I was more demanding with the debloat.
The only thing that worries me now also has to do with the battery app in realme UI 3.0. Is it normal for the "battery usage" list of apps to take a few minutes to update? In realme UI 2.0 it was pretty much instantaneous, I'm worried I've broken something forever with the debloat and the factory reset. Here you have a screenshot with my battery usage after the third reset and without debloating.

It sucks but debloating definitely had something to do with it. I did factory reset too and now it's fine. Also had the late update on battery usage stats but I think it will work out after some times, let the phone stabilise itself and all that.
I haven't debloated mine atm so I'm wondering what have you removed while still having the battery usage working fine? Would be nice to know since I can't be bothered resetting again. I hope I can at least safely debloat most google stuff and lock screen magazine.
@NotAnotherRookie This is what I have uninstalled (and disabled) with ADB AppControl for now:
com.android.chrome
com.coloros.childrenspace
com.coloros.systemclone
com.google.android.feedback
com.google.android.marvin.talkback
com.google.android.youtube
com.heytap.music
com.google.android.printservice.recommendation (disabled)
com.google.android.tts (disabled)
com.oppo.quicksearchbox (disabled)
The original list is longer but there are google services that I use on a daily basis. There are also system apps (oppo, realme, coloros... Even one from mediatek? (com.mediatek.omacp)) that I don't want to remove in case it could be the source of the problem, although my battery app bug only started with the first factory reset. Also, I don't know if it's normal but with each reset almost all the deleted apps came back (another user of that forum told me that for him only the disabled apps returned). These are apps that I deleted in Realme UI 2.0 that have not returned:
com.heytap.openid
com.oplus.obrain
com.coloros.healthservice
com.nearme.statistics.rom
com.coloros.locationproxy (I've seen this with different names: oppo and oplus instead of coloros)
About the delay of battery app, do you remember if before the debloat your phone quickly updated the battery usage stats even if it was only seconds? I have tested it with a Realme 6 Pro (UI 2.0) and almost all the apps I used appeared instantly even if they had only been in foreground for 10 seconds. Perhaps it is because the battery app menu is different in 2.0, there is a secondary menu to check usage stats and there is a small refresh time when accessing it.

Alright thanks for that. I also kinda feel that we shouldn't debloat all of the coloros, oplus etc since it seems like scumbag realme decided to make everything connected so if you disable one of them everything just stop working hence this battery usage issue. It wasn't like that in 2.0 as you can just debloat everything from the xda guide list and are fine.
The delay is definitely after the debloat. Right now I haven't debloat anything and battery usage works just fine. I feel that this is something that will get better the more updates we get, until then this is it for us. Just gotta ride along.

I'm not sure, the screenshot I shared was without any debloat and there was definitely some waiting time or delay between using any app and being able to see it in the stats. When you say "battery usage works just fine" do you mean that, in addition to being able to see the hours of 'screen on' and all that, there is a small delay for the stats to update or is it immediate for you?
Excuse me for asking the same thing so many times, my concerns with this phone are the battery app and notifications from whatsapp, telegram, discord... (some sound a few minutes later and others don't appear until I open the app).

Right I have not debloat and it doesn't have any delay. For your issue, i think you need to go to the apps you're using, App info>battery usage>allow background activity>enable it.
This should fix the delayed notification.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing and the only thing I get is that the notification (the popup) sounds two minutes later. It is very strange, as if the message arrived on my phone in time but it forgets to notify me. Other times it is instant.
The battery app dilemma is not the end of the world but I am worried that I have damaged something. If a new problem appears over the days, I'll do another reset and this time I won't delete anything again. Thanks and another question, what tool did you use for the debloat?

Question So many problem with this phone

I bought a pixel 7 pro and I admit that I am really disappointed. The camera it is true is of quality but otherwise many problems for me. The most annoying thing is the total absence of notification from the messaging applications or the SMS application. Otherwise the sound works correctly, general sound, alarm sound and even notification from the google photos application which tells me what I have memories of the past. Today I made the last update hoping that finally my problem would be solved but not at all and instead while it was working previously the applications which are reduced disappear and I no longer have the possibility of close open applications it's as if I had not launched any application, the list is empty. Does anyone have the same problems as me?

If you took the latest OTA, just factory reset the phone. I have none of the problems you are experiencing. I suspect you disabled some settings for notifications. Do yourself a favor and factory restore the phone. It's one of the best phones I have used.

The problem is that I already did a factory reset 2 months ago and it didn't change anything. Believe me, I checked all notification settings and everything is enabled even in the app itself. I just got one from google photos and it's the only app I've seen on AOD since I got the phone. I never had another. it's a really mysterious problem. I know that in the end I will end up doing another factory reset because I don't really see any other solution otherwise I would bring the phone back to the store

Thank you very much it solved my problem about recent apps disappeared
Some settings are also backed up with your Google account so it is possible that maybe done of your notification settings are persisting due to restored backups.

I think it may be a backup and restore problem but not at the level of the google account settings because while all the notifications are activated at the phone and application level, I don't have any except google photos . If it was a google settings problem (which I haven't changed) it shouldn't prevent messenger or telegram from working normally which is not the case. I suspect the problem is using Samsung smart swith to transfer my data and some apps from my S20+ to the Pixel 7 pro. I will redo a factory reset and reinstall my applications manually. It's true that normally that's what I do but this time for ease I used this application and maybe that's where the problem comes from. if after doing a new factory reset but this time without using smart switch to restore I still have the same problem well I think I will have to turn to a hardware problem or my phone is haunted

Well having a phone that does not receive any notifications even from the basic SMS application is still a serious problem for me. Moreover, this is not the only problem noted. For example I use smart launcher which allows to save the configuration of the launcher. The feature works perfectly on the S20+ but not at all for me with the pixel 7 pro while they are both on Android 13. and during the last update I had to uninstall and reinstall the basic launcher of google because closing recent applications was no longer possible as indicated above by boontje3 which doing this finaly solved the problem

So if it works normally for you, that means in the 5 or 6 google system apps that I removed using adb, like Google one or something else (nothing very special and really not much just some crap I don't want ) prevents it from working for me because it still doesn't work. On my S20+ I debloated maybe 50 or more and everything still works perfectly. I specify that the problem with the notifications has nothing to do since it is from the beginning that I have the phone long before I delete these few system app
Your browser is not able to display this video.
So, let me get this straight, you mess with the system software and then you complain that the system does not do what you expect... Ok.
The fact that on your Samsung you removed dozens of apps without a problem only tells me that it's full of really useless crap.
