I'm considering getting a new/first tablet. However, I'm not quite sure which one I want to get. I'm curious if anyone here has an android tablet or is getting considering one. If you do have one, what is it and how do you like it?
I'm looking at everything but currently the tablets I'm eyeing the most are:
- Transformer Prime: Sounds like a beast. I do worry it will be a bit expensive and I'm not sure when it will make its way to Canada. I'm also not sure I really even need that kind of power for what I want to do on a tablet.
- Motorola Xoom: Has similar specs to pretty much every other tablet on the market right now. It also will probably be the tablet with the most dev support for quite a while I imagine (until a "nexus" tablet comes out). +it's price point shouldn't be too bad at this point and it's scheduled for ICS update
- Xoom 2: Kind of like the design of this (even if the specs are only a small update to the Xoom). Problem is I have no idea if this will come to the states, let alone Canada anytime soon. Also seems kinda "blurified".
- Sony Tablet S: Available in Canada, but not sure how good of a price I can get on this (compared to the Xoom which has near-identical specs). I really like the design and am a big fan of Sony products in general.
Any tablets you guys eyeing or own?
Tablets are just as particular as phones. When you got your XT, I bet you thought it was the top of the heap. I did. Then I found out about all its little issues and problems, but also about the really good things it has. No way I could have known then. From what I can gather, tabs are the same thing. I have seen Galaxy tabs rocking it, but then in some people's signatures on XDA I see "Nook running CM7". In the states you can get a Nook for pretty cheep, easy to root and then put a stable CM7 on it a go with it.
Now RAM and memory are something I don't know anything about. Not even sure how much small RAM would be like our meager 256 on the XT. I actually would be interested in knowing that. With our current locked bootloader situation, I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak. I will never buy a Motorola again b/c of their user policies. I see the Bionic and actually laugh to myself b/c I already know it will be a locked bootloader (but the average person will think it is the best phone ever made. You know that most people don't even know what XDA, root or evena custom ROM is?).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs. If you have a tab running CM7, with flash, email, skype,...it is extremely similar to just having a bigger screened phone. One caveat is that HP discontinued their global personal computer operations (now they are exclusive to technical management solutions- or some crap like that). But suspending their personal computer options does have one benefit for you and me. Their tabs dropped from $699us to $99/139us, but everyone with an online credit card picked one up a few months ago. Bestbuy just sent back all 250,000 they had in stock, so you might be able to still pick one up on the cheap (not android os though).
And finally, Rev is in one of my G+ circles and he posts a fair amount of tablet info, so you might want to PM him and find out his thoughts.

Actually, although it pains me to say this, the Xoom is a Google developer device and can be easily unlocked by users (i.e. it's like the OG Droid). I think you're thinking of the leaked Atrix unlock. I would assume Xoom 2 is probably wearing a chastity belt until proven deflowered.

Nope. I got mine quite a bit after it came out. I didn't really understand the RAM issues and other issues it had though... (was still pretty new to Android).
I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak.

It has unlockable/relockable bootloader and most likely the biggest developer community of any tablet atm and for a while (it's like a nexus phone I'd say).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs.

I actually felt much the same way until recently. I do have uses for a tablet, though I've been thinking of the "it's a bigger screened phone" bit as well. There are certain things that I want to do that I can't do on the smaller screen of my phone (i.e. productivity stuff such as writing down lecture notes and working on essays, video chatting on a larger screen etc...). But some of the functionality on the tab is definitely duplicated by a phone. That's why I really love concepts such as the Padfone... (but that's not coming out for quite a while I believe...). I don't really love the idea of having both tablet and phone (superfluos in some ways), but I want something that combines the functionality of both...

My brother has the Asus Transformer and its a beast!! He has had it since day one and everytime I go over there I got to get my sticky lil fingers all over it. He bought the keyboard dock to which makes it twice as good + the full HDMI mirroring makes it awesome. Its also unlockable. He's running one of the newest prime roms with the o/c and there's no waiting for anything. Theres a pretty big dev comunity for it. Plus it has the ips display, which is the same as ipad. If I were you tho I'd wait for the quad cores.... then by a dual core, they will be way cheaper then.(hopefully) :/ lol who needs more than 2 cores in a tablet anyway.

I bought the Acer A500 when Walmart has them for $299 ($399 but you get a $100 gift card free), but my biased opinion says it is a bit on the big/bulky side. I felt that 10" is not very easy to handle given my small Asian hands. It is also not the lightest, and when I am reading in the bed my arm would get tired from just holding it up. Nonetheless even the Xoom or Galaxy Tab isn't that much lighter so I think maybe it's just me nick-picking.
Long story short I returned it but am very interested in the new 8.9" tab... That may be my sweet-spot on size. Same resolution screen, smaller/lighter to handle, but I will need to see how it's battery life fares.

I read a great review on Android Police about the Galaxy tab 8.9 and they said battery life was awesome. They hated on the touch wiz ui tho. They said it made everyday tasks sluggish.

Well, that's good to hear! I was secretly hoping the smaller screen will mean less battery drain (since I believe the 8.9's battery rating was lower). Regarding the UI... I can always wait for a custom ROM to show up here at some point! I just started playing with MIUI for my XT720 and I love it wwaaaaay better than any of the other UI I've used before. Gotta love the development community on Android!!

I am seriously considering the upgrade from the Prime to the Infinity. Its going to cost me $125-150, but already have the dock so that will make things less painful.
Is the screen, slightly faster processor, and overall experience worth the jump?

I've found my Infinity to be much more stable. My Prime was incredibly unstable and had very bad screen corruption and flickering on the later firmware, downgrading the firmware fixed that issue on the Prime though. The screen on the Infinity is very nice, but you probably won't notice the increased resolution except with text where it makes a very (to me) noticeable difference. The latest firmware update has seems to make multi-tasking smoother and given it a general sensation of being faster. I have a Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean makes everything very liquid smooth feeling so I have every expectation of Jelly Bean giving that same feel to the Infinity. The less tapered edge on the Infinity is actually very nice. It's more comfortable to hold and the micro sd card is completely inside the frame.
All said and done I think the Infinity is everything the Prime should have been. If you can upgrade for <$150 difference then go for it.
I did the upgrade so that I can compare my Ipad3 to the TF700T as well as wanting a functioning GPS radio. Speed has improved, stability has improved, screen has improved. All of my current applications work well. I have an issue of upgrading from a OTA but others do not so its my specific issue. I have been able to upgrade utilizing the file Asus posts on their service site for each update. As to my Ipad vs. TF700T the screens are for all practical purposes identical. Speed of all functions other than web browsing are identical (I have several applications that are the same function but for IOS or Android). Web browsing is not a tie my Ipad3 is more fluid than the TF700T. I expect that will even out with the release of Jelly Bean for the TF700T. I am waiting until that upgrade to see but if equal after Jelly Beans release then most likely my Ipad3 will be sent to Ebay to get some extra cash for the next Asus tablet release in 2013!

Thanks for the feedback. My prime has been rock solid, other than the app stutter / bluetooth issues that most have experienced. I normally upgrade every 18-24 months. Trying to justify the 7 month upgrade here. Thanks.

Glad to here the positive experience when compared to the ipad.
I too upgraded for EUR 105,- and it's worth every cent!
The screen is to much better and sharper. Reading forums in portrait mode is no problem now. On the prime it often got to crappy to read and I had to zoom in.
Furthermore it feels faster and it's definitely more stable.Finally no more Wifi issues and SD card won't eject anymore.
Also HDMI port is better designed.

I upgraded and received my Infinity yesterday. Overall, it is a much nicer tablet. I really think this is what the prime should have been when it launched. I have much better wifi and GPS reception, and the screen is much nicer to look at. Another thing that most people aren't mentioning is that the SD card actually fits in the tablet now!
That being said, I'm still having problems (even after the .26 update) running ShadowGun. The game works fine it I've just rebooted the tablet, but after several applications have been launched, I can't get past the first shot or two before the game freezes. You can still hear the game playing in the background, but the screen bounces back and forth between 2 frames. Maybe someone has a fix?
Anyway, yes, I am happy coming from the Prime.

I never owned a Prime (cancelled pre-order) so can't compare the two but from all the negative reports from the users, I can definitely say that the 700 is the most worthy successor to the 101. This is my gaming tablet and with just a few exceptions will be loaded with nothing but Tegra 3 games and full HD apps. The speed and resolution of the 700 is just right for 1080p movies, it plays the streamed .mkv files like it was coming from the sdcard! So smooth and lag free.
No way the Prime's 1280x800 can match the 700's display, no contest there but of course there will be an additional power drain to contend with so power regulation is a must.

I exchanged and updated my 201 for 700 this week. Other than having an issue doing and OTA update (which is a serial number issue again with ASUS! I was able to update manually with no problem) I am very happy I did so. In the last 48 hours I have not had any issues, which I always did with prime. I use mine for work and play although I do not really play intense games on the device. WIFI is tons better and GPS is rock solid. I did compare my screen with my daughters ipad 3 and even she was impressed with the quality. She is an apple fanatic but even she sees where being locked down in the apple OS world has its limitations as compared to android. Glad she learned something in college!

I finally pulled the trigger and sold my Prime for the Infinity on Craigslist today. Went to Best Buy hoping to find tf700 with no luck. Fortunately for me the employee I was speaking to was very friendly and found one available at one of the other bb locations 23 miles away! Though a display model I still wanted it. I purchased it ahead of time and drove 23 miles to pick it up. When I got there. They took it off the display and showed me the scratch marks on the back plate and the slab of adhesive they used to keep the tablet connected that they couldn't peel away. Then I noticed that the label says tf201!!!! Mother [email protected]#ker!! The employee that said that they had one available mistakenly thought that that was the tf700 because it was so similar!!! The employee explained it to me and apologized. I said I drove for 45 mins to get here and was assured that you guys had the tf700!!! I was very upset. The guy was scared and looked around... finally he found one in the store!!! It was reserved for someone else that paid online. I ended up with a new tf700 and not a display model!!! Lol Apparently the person that ordered online had cancelled his order after checking the system and I was very fortunate to come out of BB with a brand new tf700!! So far loving the new toy.

I exchanged my C1 Prime at Best Buy which GPS was dead when I bought it and ended up with a C7 Infinity. Wifi/BT/GPS were great, however vibration, haptic feedback was dead out of the box. Attempted trying to toggle the settings but still nothing on power up/down, etc. It also couldn't find the OTA when I tried to update and I had to install .26 from my microsd which I take it is this issue here.
Took it back yesterday. Pretty bummed since my major issue with 201 was wifi/BT problems using my headset and music/netflix but it seemed good on the 700. Overall it seemed better than the Prime but that's not saying much .. Asus still has some pretty bad QC in my opinion
I've had my Infinity for a week now since I got my prime refunded. To echo a previous comment in this thread, this is what the prime should have been and what I expected it to be. Everything just works and the screen is absolutely beautiful. My prime never got a GPS lock, and running Bluetooth to my Thunderbolt for Tablet Talk would make my internet slow so an unusable crawl on the Prime. Here on the infinity I can stream music while browsing the web or XDA and texting. Used it successfully a few times for navigation while tethered; got a GPS lock nearly as fast as my phone locks. Plus it fits more snugly in my 201 dock than my Prime did. My only gripe is that the battery has not been quite as epic as my Prime, but it has been more than sufficient for daily use.

I'm sure you're already aware, but if not...that if you purchased your Prime tablet from Best Buy you can actually exchange it for an Infinity by way of One year manufacturer warranty.

How is internet browsing faster? Thats my problem with the prime sluggish.

This is what I was expecting when I bought Prime. GPS and Wi-Fi work great. Screen crisp and clear. Camera takes really good pics. Had 2 primes, both had terrible picture quality. Gone into settings a few times and did update check, won't show one. No biggie, I'll d-load and push. Rooted fine.
Only complaint is, battery doesn't last as long as primes did.
Overall, very pleased. Especially since I had best buy damage warranty and they gave me Infinity free.
This is what the prime should have been! WFI,GPS, works. Had it for 24hrs, so far so good
I never really had problems with my prime (except bad GPS and pixels), but I exchanged it anyways for an infinity. I have to say the infinity is really what the prime should have been, the screen resolution is amazing, it's fast, GPS works and I even notice better wifi connections. I had to root the prime and tweak the hell out of it to get it to perform anywhere near what the infinity does right out of the box. Oh and its the first asus tablet I've had the does not have dead pixels.
well i currently own a 300 but am still in the 30 day return policy so i was wondering if anyone has upgraded and is very satisfied with the 700? is there a really noticable difference between the two? does anyone highly recommend it over the 300?

I currently own both. Honestly, the TF300 is a damn good device. I found the TF700 to be only marginally better. Many people say the colors and contrast are significantly better on the TF700. I find the color saturation and contrast to be quite good on both. I find the screen on the TF300 to be essentially the same as the transformer Prime minus the Super IPS brightness.
The biggest selling point for the TF700 is screen sharpness/resolution and Super IPS brightness boost.The TF300 screen is excellent. The TF700 screen is spectaular. Also the TF700 is insanely bright.
Yes the TF700 has a faster processor, but this isn't that apparent to me in day to day use. The TF300 is fast enough for me for most tasks.
And the faster processor comes at a cost - if you are used to the battery life on the TF300 be prepared - the TF700's battery drains much faster at any brighness level. The TF300 is a much better portable device in my opinion.
Used near an outlet or if you always carry the dock, the TF700 is acceptable.
I probably shouldn't bring up apple, but its a lot like the difference between the iPad 2 and the new iPad. Evolutionary not revolutionary.
Edit: As a final comment - I use the TF300 when I travel or when I'm out during the day, because I don't need to worry about the battery. I use the TF700 at home or at work, because I'm always near an outlet. The TF700 feels more like a luxury - awesome screen, which is a pleasure to use when I can - but it comes at a bit of a cost.

I kind of agree. I upgraded from a TF300. The screen is amazing but the TF300 was plenty fast for most uses. it was also much cheaper. The battery for the TF700 seems shorter. I drain about 15% an hour and get about 6 hours from heavy use. My dock only seems to add 2.5 hours. That was beofre I factory reset. Now I get about 7 and 3. My TF300 seemed to last me longer though I never officially checked. I also never used it as heavily as I do the TF700. S chool satrted about the same time I got my TF700.
TF300 is an amazing device though and the fact that you can get it for 250 at Best buy (16gb) makes it a no-brainer IMO. It has almost the exact same innards as the Nexus 7 which means fantastic support (hello jellybean) while also being 10.1" and having a micro SD slot (among other things).
But I needed the higher res screen so I own a TF700.
TF700 isn't so bad if you manage it well. I plan to probably trade in my tegra 3 version for an S4 snapdragon version if and when they finally come out.

best buys around me had it on clearance for 250. Some were still in stock a few days ago when I checked. They'll run out but black friday I expect to see TF300 for 300 deals around.

Just curious - how do you know that the S4 snapdragon version will be any better? Isn't there a chance that performance could actually be worse with the S4?
Also, while Nvidia leaves a lot to be desired, I'm not sure I'd want to lose all of the apps that are T3-specific. Is the S4 snapdragon expected to be as much of a "standard" as the T3 or would it be compatible with T3-specific apps?
Just seems a little strange (to me) that you are already convinced that the S4 version will be 'better' - curious how you came to those conclusions.
Please don't take these questions the wrong way - I really am curious about the S4 and just looking for some information about it.

Just google snapdragon s4 vs tegra 3 you'll get literally hundreds of comparisons, many controversial.
Some think it may be just as good, others claim its vastly superior, others claim tegra 3 might have a slight edge (primarily NVIDIA)
I think the reason people here at XDA are looking forward to it is because there is a suspision that many of the problems that people have been having with the Infinity, Transformer and TF300 are related to the Tegra 3 - though there are extensive theories about the possibly sub-par eMMC/NAND memory (I/O problems) that ASUS may have used as well.
So there is a hope that the S4 (which is a superb chip) can't be any worse, and may be far better.

I don't game with my tablet so the T3-specific apps you speak of (almost entirely games) don't matter to me.
Main reason is battery life. Comparing certain US phones to International phones is basically comparing the S4 to the Tegra 3. The performance is similar but the S4 usually has a significant advantage in battery life.

See the main reason I would want to upgrade would be for the screen I feel like I wouldn't notice to much as far as the processor goes. But I did fall in love with how the 300 physically feels and Idk if I'd get that with the aluminum backing on the 700. And what about signals does the 700 fall short like the prime did with wifi and GPS?

picked up the tf700t yesterday. some initial hands-on comparisons with the tf300t (which i also own):
- tf700t screen (echoing others) is clearer, more vibrant and brighter; i'm a photographer and the screen upgrade is very noticeable. reading text is much nicer too. always thought the tf300t screen was a little washed out.
- tf700t is noticeably (but not significantly) lighter and thinner than the tf300t
- too soon to comment on battery
- tf300t power and volume rocker feels more positive than tf700t. tf700t power and volume rocker feels mushy
- tf300t speakers are much much louder and has more bass; sounds more full. tf700t sounds weak with too much treble; does sound slightly clearer and not as muffled as the tf300t though. i can hear the system sounds (touch/lock/unlock) only if i put the speaker to my ear (max volume).
can anybody else confirm my speaker observation? not sure if i have a busted speaker. thought the speakers would be on par if not better than the tf300t.
Personally, I had to install the Volume+ app in order to get my speakers to be loud enough, so I think your speaker observations are very accurate. With Volume+, I've been satisfied though (it also allows you to customize the sound with an equalizer)...

thanks for the confirmation. also, i can barely hear touch or unlock/lock sounds; it plays but i can only hear it if my ear is right on the speaker (volume at max).

I'm looking at buying a TF-700 and there is a guy near me that is selling a used one with the dock for a good price. He only used it for a couple weeks and then switched to something else.
I've been doing a fair bit of reading on them and it seems like there are several build quality issues, but it can be hit and miss.
My questions are:
What are some of the trouble areas that I should be looking for? Light bleeds, loose screen, etc.
How do I check if the bootloader has been unlocked? Will it show "unlocked" while booting?

When you first turn on the tablet there would be small text on the top left corner saying "this device is unlocked". It appears for about 5 seconds.

I'd be wary due to the fact it hasn't been out that long, and it probably *is* affected by some issue. This guy paid the premium price and now wants to get rid of it? Mmmmhh....
The I/O issue is not something you have to check for -- all units seem to have it, though not all users notice or care.
Light bleeds might be annoying, although I'm not sure I'd send a device back to manufacturer for it. Loose screen would be a definite turn-down, because it seems it carries a relatively high chance of getting worse in time and possibly leads to cracked screens. Bad idea.
Obviously, any signs of heavier use, or being battered (like scratches and dents), and try and check WiFi reception as well -- there are not that much reports on it being really bad, but it might be an issue in isolated cases.
When you get to check the device, reboot it (press the power button and choose Power Off, then press it again after the vibration). Check the upper left corner -- it should say "The Device is Unlocked" if it is.
If it is not, you have a decision to make, since that either means that 1) the original owner never tried to unlock (main question: what firmware is it on? Can it receive OTAs? Is he OK with you trying to unlock?) or 2) he did try to unlock but it didn't work out. The latter case poses no problem in itself *IF* you're not eyeing towards flashing a custom recovery and/or ROM -- the device is perfectly functional running a stock ROM and you can install the stock updates (e.g., to JB) anyway from uSD. It would preclude you from tinkering in-depth, however.
Hmm I have an assumption he might be selling you a TF201 if the price is really low. Familiarize yourself the differences between the 2 tablet, or you can check in settings>about tablet and look for Model number to confirm, should say "ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T". Happy shopping!

My guess is...that it's a cheap sale because it's unlocked and it can't be returned for whatever reason.
Hard to say some people like me buy use for a few months then dump...
I'd be extremely cautious about handing out hard earned cash for someone else's junk.
It may have been dropped and fixed or it has some intermittent hardware bugs.
In the least get the original receipt with a date of original sale.
Look for a good S\N on the bottom of the tablet, all the original packaging, cables, working charger... etc.
Chances are even if it is a low price and pretty new you may be out of luck with any warranty.

Extremely good point there. I think we all agree it's risky to say the least. I'm n ot you, obviously, but if I were, I'd save up and buy new.
Thanks for all your advice. I went ahead and bought it anyway It is a tf-700, not unlocked, and in really good shape. The guy only used it for a couple weeks and then switched to the note 10.1 because of the stylus (so he said). Seems like the kind of guy who likes to switch out his toys fairly often.
It wasn't ridiculously cheap, I basically saved the tax and got the dock for free, so I feel I got a good deal.

I just recently made the switch from webos and replaced my pre3 with the GS3, and figured I might as well replace the touchpad too (I had it loaded with CM9) I still miss a few things about webos, but am really enjoying android so far. I was really waiting for the padfone to come to north america, but I think I'd have been waiting a long time, lol. padfone 2 maybe...
I put CM10 on the GS3, and I've rooted the TF700. I'm going to wait a bit before I unlock it. I figure if there are any issues I may still have a shot at a warranty. I'm definitely looking forward to JB on this baby though

Man...I wanted one of those HP Touchpads soooo bad when the price dumped to $99.00 bucks.
Missed out there, sucks too because my sister was working for HP at the time.
That's a coincidence - I had a HP Touchpad that I sold to help go towards buying the
Infinity The TP had CM9 and was really nice!
I also had the HP Pre3 but that died a very sudden death (on last day of warranty!) but Carphone Warehouse replaced it with a brand new samasung Galaxy S2.
Not rooted the Infinity yet . . . . . can't wait for Jelly Bean on it!

If you do it right, no risk really, (maybe .1%, but this come with anything). I have been testing like uninstall/reinstall/reformat/switching internal memory to sdcard/downgrade/upgrade/incremental upgrade/flashing kernels about at least 20 times and mine is running top notch.

and you don't have nvflash? I'm just debating whether or not to unlock it, because once I do I can't really sell it to get the nexus 10. I feel like the nexus 10 will have more dev support over the years...however I will stick with the tf700 if it performs better than the n10 with cleanmod and with an overclock

If you really are trying to talk yourself into a Nexus then it might be better to leave the TFI as is.
Are you happy overall with the TF700T?

Yes, CleanRom and Clemsyn and data2sd really make this thing worth more than $500. I'm very happy with it. When I first purchased the device, my wife and kids refused to use it due to performance and broswer, now they're fighting to grab it.
I am personally running clean and oc and it is awesome, but hard to compare to something that no one has in their hands. If you are unsure just wait. check out the 10 then go from there. my decision to unlock was based on the external sd and dock. Nexus will have options too , but I decided to hang on to my 700 and getting my kids nexus 7's for xmas so I will have some nexus fun too...

I have to say with CleanROM and the newest Clemsyn's I no longer consider my TFI a clunker...
The biggest risk is that any future hardware failure will be very expensive for you (if you want a working TF700 back).
I'm on paranoid Android with Clemsyn's CM10 based kernel. No data to sd and I love it! Super fast. My tablet feels rock solid. I don't understand why some complain about build quality. I love the slim sexy look. Can't wait to get my micro sd to try data to sd. Hearing how awesome it is will make this thing crazy good. I wouldn't own a tablet or phone I couldn't hack on. I love development and it's quickly turned into my favorite hobby the past couple years

i dont like mine at all and want a nexus 10. i shoudlnt have to unlock void this and the other i just want something that works. i do a lot of flashing on my htx one x to get it where it "should be" while all my friends just buy their ipad 4 and have zero things to do on them, just use them as intented. i stick to android because i need it to do a load more than iOS can give me but damn sometimes i wish google would just make a stable version. oh wait. its called a nexus 10. lol and theres no luck in selling these things. who knows about a transformer infinity ? resale value is low >_>
This is Engadget's verdict about the Nexus 10:
"At under $400, the Nexus 10 is a compelling package, but despite that display it can't quite muster best-in-class performances across the charts. In fact, other than a relative lack of resolution (1,920 x 1,200 vs. this guy's 2,560 x 1,600) the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 is, we think, an overall better package. It's thinner, lighter, faster, has a much better camera, offers better battery life (particularly if you opt for the keyboard dock) and, frankly, we'd take the brightness and contrast of that 600 nit, Super IPS+ panel over this one with its extra pixels.
What does ASUS's offering lack? Well, Android 4.2 for one thing, but as we've shown above you're just an aftermarket keyboard app away from getting the best that has to offer right now. And, the Nexus 10 does have a lower starting price of $399 for a 16GB model. First, it sounds like the OP already has a TF700. For someone that's going to have to take a loss to get a N10 the question of which to get is different than someone just looking to buy a tablet. It also depends on what OP does with his tablet. The one place where the N10 will blow anything else out there away is gaming. Teg3 is a fifteen month old 40nm A9 chip and in the TF700 it's running at its maximum resolution output. The Mali in the N10 has 2/3 more memory bandwidth and that's huge. For consumption, browsing, and utility type stuff it doesn't make sense to go from a TF700 to a N10.
For someone looking for a new tablet unless they need the keyboard, extended battery life, Super IPS display, and expandable storage it makes no sense to buy a TF700 over a N10. The N10's designed by Google and built by Samsung so it will run well out of the box, be built well, have great service and support, and be updated regularly well in to the future. And it costs less too.
And 95% of people buying a tablet don't know what a bootloader is so what they get out of the box is what they're going to have to live with. To get competitive performance out of the TF700 you guys on this forum have done some of the best work I've seen on XDA. But at the end of the day your $499 tablet costs $649 ($499+$100 SquareTrade for voiding warranty+$50 Class 10 SD card for data2SD to fix read/write issues) which is almost the same price as the most expensive tablet available: the 64GB iPad. And even after that it doesn't have 5GHz dual-channel Wi-Fi, BT4.0, Glonass-support, NFC, and other more modern features. So for a non-XDA audience not needing or wanting the TF700's extra features they'll have a far better experience with a stock N10.
Without unlocking, rooting, and risking file corruption the TF700's performance isn't really competitive. Here's a stock TF700 on the latest JB update vs. a stock Note 10.1 on yesterday's JB release. I can't imagine the N10 in final shippable form on pure 4.2 won't at least match the Note's performance. And if someone applied the same SQL tweaks and other things you've guys have had to do to the Note 10.1 the vast difference in stock performance would carry through when looking at them tweaked vs. tweaked. The difference being no one's done it because it's not necessary. And you know the dev community for the N10 will be huge and they'll be able to get a lot more out of the N10 matching or exceeding your gains over stock.
So which to pick depends on whether someone's willing to heavily modify their device to make it perform well, whether more modern features matter, how big a deal the non-expandable storage is on the N10, and how important Asus' unique features are. There’s really no one-size-fits-all answer if you’re being objective.

It basically boils down to what features will end out being most important to you in your day to day use.
I too seroiusly considered ditching the TF700 for the N10 but when I weighed out the benifits of the N10 compared to what I would be sacrifing I just could not get myself to pull the trigger.
I can not count the amount of times I have had to turn on that super ips switch and slide it to Max. The benifit of the N10's higher resolution and faster processor would be moot in this situation if I cant veiw the display.
I myself am considering switching to a GNote 10.1 from my t700. Gaming and just the I/o in general seems more smooth on the note. Just sucks its such an expensive tablet for what you get.
I am worried about unlocking, because even with a square trade warranty once your manufacture warranty is void, so I'd your squaretrade. Also your square trade does not go into effect until the year on your regular warranty...so if your unlocked I guess you better hope you don't have an issue for the first year

Nice read. OP wondering what you've decided with. I'm stuck too. Love the form factor of the t700 with keyboard but I feel its very outdated processor. N10 is a beast when it comes to gaming. Butter smooth.

I am on the fence as well and I am an android noob with a stock TF700 plus dock still returnable at BB.
I have seen you here and in the Nexus 10 forum and was wondering if you bought one. I mostly browse and watch movies, so not sure if the TF700 is going to be to much for a starter noob like me. BarryH has some great points.
I chose Android to try and get away for all the proprietary issues with the Apple brand... I feel the walls closing in on that idea!
I would at least like to root and have some say over MY tablet and deny some of these insane permissions that are being asked.

I have both. I like the nexus 10 for gaming and it just works. Everything is smooth. Tf700 is not as smooth and do lag from time to time but the keyboard dock is its selling point IMO. For browsing and watching movies the tf700 is good.
Also to add I just unlocked and running cleanrom inheritance with clemsey kernel and it still lags here and there.

I finally unlocked and with cleanrom inheritance along with clemsey kernel 1.8ghz with 650 gpu. IMO n10 is still smoother and faster. Not to say the tf700 didn't improve but I do still see frame rate drop often and games are smoother but not butter smooth like the n10. The n10 gpu is just a beast.
