Warranty void from physical damage? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So my WiFi signal is unreliable and I also get the "Restricted Access Changed" "preparing SIM" messages daily and was thinking about calling ATT for a warrantied refurb.
Problem is, my girlfriend dropped my naked HOX a couple weeks ago and I have a small, but deep ding/gouge on the top left corner of the phone about 1/3 the size of the front cam hole. It's just cosmetic, but probably obvious that it was dropped since it would need quite.an.impact to make a gouge as deep as it is.
Any experience with HTC warranty? Will they screw me
? I can't afford to get charged for the refurb.
PS, I did not dump the gf.

Only water damage will void a warranty for damage

if 95% of the phone is in good shape and the screen doesn't have any super noticeable scratches, one ding will not matter to at&t warranty. They replace the casing when the phone gets reconditioned anyway.
In fact, i tripped and tossed my phone tumbling down 20 sidewalk blocks. Other than some big gauges by the power button, it looked fine. I sent it back to at&t due to a dead pixel and they never said anything.

I had to send my Nexus One in because it would constantly heat up and reboot. It started happening after I dropped the phone and I let them know that I have kids so, yes, its been dropped. They ended up replacing the mainboard and I didn't have to pay a thing.

My replacement is on its way. During phone call I just said there was no physical damage. I'm getting nervous about this as I cannot afford to pay if they void my warranty. Considering just refusing delivery of the replacement to avoid a bad outcome.
Anybody else with similar experience?

If they already shipped it back to you without discussing and cost, you should be free and clear of any monitary obligations. When I sent my N1 in I had to keep calling to see when it was coming back. Then one day I called and was told it was already in the mail. I asked how much it would be and they said that they would have called to confirm I wanted it fixed if I had to pay.
If the same holds true for you, awesome!!!

I just got a replacement due to in call quality. Sounded like i was in a tunnel! On both ends! Everything was perfect when i returned it to the store, i was in my 30 days so i got a brand new 1. Only thing that concerns me is the bootloader said relocked. I hope at&t doest catch it!

Yes unless you are reporting it lost or stolen. I have no idea if they ban the iemi on their network or not.

Interesting.. sure would be nice to have a spare X for development purposes... Banned imei or not.

Insurance fraud is also an issue. :-!

Well I'm not one to commit fraud.but I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time it has happend. Lol
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

First off, this is a warranty claim (after 30 days) and not insurance claim. Also, it was done through ATT's advance exchange program where they send you out a refurb, then you send them back the defective phone. Once they receive it they determine whether or not warranty is void.
Anyway, I took the phone to a ATT warranty center today just to ask them if they thoughty.warranty would be void. The kid who worked there said it would be ok as long as the screen wasnt cracked. I'll take that with a grain of salt, though, as he seemed to be not so sharp.

good luck! Hope everything gets fixed up and doesn't cost you a dime!

Thought I'd update this old thread.
Mailed the unit back to ATT back in July. To make it worse, I retardedly dropped it unto a blue USPS mailbox around midnight on the most humid ~100 degree day if the year. I was ****ting bricks that the water damage sensor might go off from the extreme humidity.
Apparently it didn't, everything turned out ok and I have not heard from ATT since.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I was wondering if you could provide a picture of the damage done to your phone. Thanks!

Interesting info on warranty issues

So I just got off the phone with three different tmo reps. I received today my THIRD phone, which had worse screen bleed than the one I have now so I put it right back into the back it came in to return. The first two reps told me they could offer a mytouch 4g, I said no, and that to just return the phone I received today since it was worse than what I already have.
The third rep, tech support, told me those are known issues and are NOT covered under warranty (this is an LG announcement to tmo). Screen bleed and data connection loss were the issues we discussed. They are known by LG and tmo and aren't under warranty so the store should not have warrantied it. She did say to just return the phone I received today. She also said that exchanging the phone over and over will not help anything because it's a software issue and the update would fix all issues, but no idea when that update would be coming.
Another interesting thing, she mentioned a batch of phones went out on exchange to customers WITH the update, but that those are all gone and the rest are the normal 2.2.2. Yeah, so I got off the phone just as confused as before I called.
That is bs.... screen bleed is a defect and it should be fixed... LG is taking the easy way out and saying it is not covered under warranty
Sent from my G2x
Just curious, have you gotten a refund for any of your replacements that you have sent back?
I did the same thing you did. I asked for a replacement and it turned out to be even worse than my original g2x. That was May 4th. I still haven't gotten a refund for the money I had to 'deposit' while I had both phones.
Every time I call they give me the runaround, saying that they just processed it or they just received it, or some other BS.

noooooooooooo screen bleed is a software issue and it will be fixed with the OTA
i say we go to tmo and lg corporate offices with pitchforks and torches and demand an update and fixes no more of this crap ok who's with me.
I did not have to deposit anything when I warrantied the phone(s). I just went to a store, told them I have problems, and they warrantied it without question. This, according to tech support, is not supposed to happen because of the service announcement that LG sent to tmo.
Yes, the tech support rep swears the update will fix the screen bleed and data connection issues. I asked about any recall, etc.. and she didn't know what I was talking about. The word "Sensation" never came up in any conversation either, only the MyTouch 4G, I said hell no.
I thought I had a near perfect phone but I just noticed that there is dust under my screen... and I don't want to risk a replacement but DAMN it's annoying me...
Maybe after they get new (fixed hardware) batches with the gb update on them I will ask for a replacement.

I'm getting a little nervous with all this recall talk...I really don't like any other phone tmo offers and my only other option would be to go back to the Iphone which I didn't want to do but oh well.
I'm also interested in knowing what was said for tmo to agree to swap out for the sensation. I've gone through 2 exchanges and I'll be damned if I will go through 2 more.

Also would like to know.
After being treated like crap with customer service, I wrote a well worded letter and sent it to all the big wigs at TMobile corporate figuring I would finally get the sensation for free (if they valued my service). I asked for the sensation at no charge or for them to let me out of my contract since they continue to give me a faulty phone. An exec called me today and stated that they would accept the $50 upgrade but they would do no more. She also said they would not let me out of contract. When I mentioned filing a complaint with the BBB, she said she looks into all complaints from them and that she would not be calling me back and the offer would no longer be valid!!! Now that is guts. No wonder they have been slipping in service year after year......
Should I just pay the $50 for the sensation?

I just told the guy that called me that I was very unhappy with the way that Tmo has addressed the situation. I told him that the Mytouch 4g wasn't comparable and that I felt offended by being offered that phone. After that he went on to tell me why customer service didn't exchange for the sensation and what was going on with LG and Tmo regarding this phone. He then asked me if I would like the Sensation. I replied yes that was the only comparable phone. He then told me he'd send it out with no charge and that was it.

Obviously it boils down to the rep you end up with...as soon as you hear something you don't like, conveniently get "disconnected" and call back

[Q] Water damaged insured Sensation, what will happen?

Hi
About a month ago my senny fell out of my training bag, and spent a night out in the rain. When I got it back, it seemed to work fine, until I discovered a few things:
I had to charge my phone 3 times a day
I could not hear the other person when I spoke to them in the phone
It does random shutdowns/reboots about ten times a day.
I have a insurance that follows my sim, and I'm thinking about returning it. If I return it, do I have to return to stock/s-on, and if I return it, what will they do with it? Fix it? Replace it? Send me another phone?
Thanks!
If they discover it's rooted they will deny your claim and blame rooting for the problem. So you have to go back to stock. Someone more knowledgeable about returning to stock can help you with that .but I'm positive it must be done .unfortunately .then it's up to your carrier to decide what to give for replacement. It could be another sensation, your sensation repaired, or another device they consider comparable. Likely it will be another sensation. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

I'm pretty certain they will not cover an damage whatsoever if there is evidence of water damage (meaning that little white moisture indicator turns red)
Doesn't matter what the damage is, they will deny warrenty due to water damage.
So unfortunately, you are probably screwed. You can call HTC or your phone company and ask (I'd leave out the part about rooting, even though there are many many reports of peopl ewho've sent a rooted phone in who got warrenty repairs no questions asked, but not with water damage) and quite frankly that's probably your best option right now. Get REAL answers, not our guesses.
But be prepared for them to say you have to buy a new device or pay for repairs out of pocket.
Sorry, bro.
Actually I had the same problem and By myself can change the digitalizer and the upper electronic without any problem, the process is so easy and Youtube is full of how-to videos.
I can reapir my sensation for 70 euros.

HTC repair is ****

I've sent my phone in to Htc for repair 4 times because every time it comes back to me it has new physical damage done by the repair engineers. I just got my phone back yesterday after it was showing some white lines across the screen but they weren't able to see the damage, now i'm asking for a replacement. I'm totally frustrated with this, its been going on for over a month now.Is there anything i can do to convince them to give me a new phone? Has this happened to anyone else?

But guess what. The re-used the same plastic cover they opened and slaughtered for months..half victory, but phone cover full of aesthetic damages...

Anyone Get the Verizon Insurance?

I typically never get insurance, but since I got this phone using my brother's upgrade and will not be able to upgrade again without someone losing unlimited data, I would like this phone to last. I've heard mixed things on the Verizon insurance- some love it and some don't see the need. Also, for those of you that have the insurance, do you have the total equipment coverage? This extends the one year warranty to the life of the phone. I wouldn't get this typically, but coming from a Thunderbolt, I experienced a drastic deterioration of my phone and again, I need the GS3 to last longer.
One more thing, is it easy going back to stock? I am currently rooted and am running CleanROM. I also backed up my IMEI, for what its worth. Can VZW see that I rooted and flashed a ROM, even if I restore it back to stock? I don't want to run into any problems putting a claim in. Thanks!!

I got the insurance, but I have 8 year old twins so I did not want to take the chance of them messing it up when I was not looking.
I don't usually get the insurance cause the phone already comes with 1 year manufacture warranty so I just gotta make sure I don't drop it. And to your second question, yes its pretty easy going back to stock. Just download Odin and the stock ROM and follow the instructions. It will unroot your phoneand WIPE EVERYTHING. For some reason I lost my imei and I couldn't recover it so Verizon replaced the phone under warranty at no charge.

They lied to you. I worked there for 3 years.
The phone goes out to a 3rd party company in Dallas, and that company ships you a refurbished model back that more than likely won't be 100% functional.
During that time of anywhere from 3 business days to 30, they make you take a "loaner phone" which they charge you for.
Don't believe me? Call 1-800-GEEKSQUAD or go into another BBY or call Customer Service and ask.
Refurb. Only time it is new is if the system (called STAR) states the 3rd party company has no refurbs to give. Which happens almost never.
See my convo w/ Adrynalyne here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34666411#post34666411
Sometimes if you enroll into an autopay option with your bank and pay every month with your card, the bank will allow for some sort of deductible to pay for a new phone if something happens. I know mine does but I haven't looked into the fire print.

LOL, good luck with that. not to be a ****, but you will never get a new phone from them, unless they have tried EVERYTHING else first, including sending it out for repair 3 TIMES! (about a month per time) Yes, you will be charged for a loner as well, and yes, it will suck the big one. I would NOT recommend the best buy insurance to anyone. I ALWAYS pushed the carrier, even though it is more.

I worked for these R-Tards in Michigan for 4 years, all in the mobile dept. (can you tell i'm a little bitter?)
I have verizon insurance. It's expensive but I feel better with it. I also have the otterbox Defender case. I am ocd about scratches.
For going back to stock I personally always make sure I know how to put the phone back to the out of box state. It's really easy, just check out the guide in development sticky. Use the G1 Odin link, I think it still works.
Edit: for best buys black tie plan, I broke my Droid x a few years ago, had that plan. Took it in and it took them a month to figure out they couldn't repair it then walked over and got a new one off the shelf. Stupid in my opinion but you do get a new phone.

The vzw insurance is priceless extends phone warranty until you upgrade to diff phone
Another thing unless u drop phone anything that goes wrong is covered in house
The only draw back it's a ***** getting a different device after multiple remans
You will get your due for an update crap

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to get the Total Equipment package. My experience with the Thunderbolt has been a disaster. Those who had the total equipment plan on the TBolt were able to get their phones swapped out for Rezounds (of course, after numerous rounds of trouble shoots and replacement TBolts). I don't think the S3 will deteriorate as quickly as the Thunderbolt, but again it's about being risk adverse. Thanks again!
I got my phone from Sams club and got their square trade insurance through them. $100 for 2 years and only $50 deductible. But they don't cover water damage

I have insurance and also a spare xperia play as a backup. Let's say I switched to my xperia play and they switch the insurance to it. Since there's probably no chance of them having that phone anymore would they upgrade me to a newer phone if I filed a claim? This could be a workaround to the no more upgrades on unlimited data lines

What are the chances :D

So. I bricked my phone when I ruu'd back to the 2.20 update and took the 3.18 OTA update. It bricked my phone because I was rooted with s-on. I called AT&T's warranty center and told my phone stopped working after I performed an update and they sent me a new one. What are the chances that they'll actually know that my phone was rooted? Has anyone else gone through this?

If it doesn't turn on at all they won't be able to tell because, well, they can't turn it on.
I'm just guessing but you might be committing some kind of fraud in doing that?

I bricked my old one x by flashing ice cold jelly RIM meant for the international one x. And I called Rogers and they sent me a new one as my old one x won't turn on. Its been a year now and no calls, no fees, nothing.

While AT&T technically reserves the right to refuse warranty service due to modification of the phone; in actual practice I have yet to see a report of them actually doing that. Many folks here have returned rooted and bootloader unlocked phones (even running custom ROMs) for various hardware defects (with the screen still able to turn on, and therefore not difficult to tell it was rooted), with no issue.
That said, I'm usually not a fan of making a warranty claim for a brick resulting from your own lack of research. But the case of SuperCID and OTA/RUU shouldn't be bricking people's phones (its not clear why it does), so its a bit of a gray area, and I'd personally on the fence about calling it fraud (leaning to the side of "not fraud").
I will say this about AT&T warranty. They really don't deal with software. In fact they recieve 5,000 phones that are not really broken. They have a simple check system and if everything passes, then they give you a new phone. Even though I was not in the warranty department, I transferred a lot people there.
Back to the subject, if you tell them you tried to update it and it did not work, most likely they will replace it. As long as it is not water damaged and was not physically tampered with.

5000 phones in a month? In a week?
Very informative, nonetheless. Thanks for the post.
No worries. Since I didn't sign a contract I can talk about it as much as I want . The reason for this is because reps do not fully troubleshoot. As a tech support rep, I made sure to rarely transfer, because it coudld be something as small as a setting

I wouldn't say this is fraud at all. The rep on the phone asked me if the phone had any physical or water damage. He said nothing about software modification and if he did, I would have been honest with him. The bricked phone itself was in excellent condition even after 8 months of use. I've always been good at maintaining my phones in the past. If anything, they could use the phone for parts or something.
I did receive my replacement phone yesterday in the mail. I sent out my bricked phone today.
Technically with Google and HTC both having tracking software buried in stock os a real phone software egineer can prolly tell just by punching up your imei what's going on. I did tech support for blackberry business (worst phn in my opinion) and it was possible to pull up there home screen and guide them through setting up stuff. I know some people that do att warranty and they tell me they have never in there location made phone out of warranty from software only physical damage and water strip detector.
