Unlocking bootloader vs rooting - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the difference between unlocking the bootloader on my device and rooting my device? I understand that in order to root, you must unlock the bootloader first, but what exactly does each process do? Why does Asus provide the means to free your bootloader but not a full rooting of the device? Once I unlock, why can't I just download clockwork mod from the Play Store and start flashing roms?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA Premium HD app

You do not need to unlock to root, you need to unlock to install roms. Rooting would give you access to change some settings run apps that require root access adblock etc... unlocking allows you pretty much full control of your device at the cost of loss of your warranty.

Different?
I think in this is small mistake... for root you need unlock bootloader, becase when U want root this device U can do this with ZIP file, somewhere on XDA is thread about this, and if U want use CWM Recovery to root with using ZIP file U need unlock bootloader for install CWM recovery...unlock bootloader - for this is app from Asustek, U can use this after download and install on ur tablet but waranty is down...
root - if u got this u can use this dev. like super user....in ur terminal and for ur apps from Google Play too
different is probably in this: root is superuser access X unlock bootloader give u new opportunities for install ur ROMs and CWM
I´m sorry if I´m wrong....and sorry for my terrible english... I though about problem ... no about language

i remember i read somewhere that there's a one click tool to root, use your windows pc and run it, no need to unzip any zip files,

No need to unlock for just rooting.
Use this tool for rooting. I have successfully done in windows.

This is not true, you do not need to unlock the bootloader to get root, see the following topics:

Personally I used the tool in the 1st and 2nd post, the 2nd post is based on the 3rd post. I still have my bootloader locked because I don't want to lose my warranty, since I got my Transformer TF300 only recently and it was repaired already by Asus because of random reboots. There diagnosis was "system unstable" and replaced the mainboard. Since the repair I'm real happy now, the random reboots are gone.

Totally right. You can root without unlocking. So you can use apps like Titanium backup and so on.
If you like to flash custom Roms you need a Custom Recovery like CWM or TWRP. To get this you need to unlock your bootloader but doing this means no warranty any more.
If you brick your Pad with an unlocked bootloader and send it back to Asus you will have to pay for this (Was about 240,00€ for a User on a German Forum).

it comes down to what you want to do w/ the pad and how old it is. once you unlock the bootloader, you void your warranty w/ ASUS. they say it right there as you unlock. if the tab is brand new, wait a while. i rooted out of the box to gain access to some apps but did not unlock yet, my tab is only 2 months old. JB is just around the corner. waiting for that
when unlocked can install a custom recovery like Clockwork or Team Win, which in turn allows you to make backups and flash other ROMs. rooting just gives you super user privileges on your phone/tab so you can do things like browse the root of the tab, debloat apps, modify the build.prop using Root Explorer, install Titanium Backup to backup apps, run Browser2Ram, all the while keeping your warranty. a combination of being both rooted and unlocked is the ultimate goal for a habitual rom flasher

Non-destructive root for ICS?

Anyone know of a non-destructive root method for ICS? My wife and I are swapping phones. Mine is rooted and all but hers isn't and I want to make a Titanium backup of all her stuff.
So far the only method I know of to root is via OEM unlock and flashing clockwork recovery. Then installing su via CWR. The OEM unlock erases everything.

I believe you can root it without unlocking the boot loader using SuperOneClick but I could be wrong. Either way worth a try

Move the TitaniumBackup folder to your PC before starting. Don't forget your pictures folder too!
just copy your entire SDcard to your computer , and then after unlocked bootloader copy it back

My understanding is that you can unroot as needed, so I wouldn't consider rooting the S "destructive". There are instructions to be found easily that explain how to unroot your phone.
Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant -- disregard the above.

Actually I found another program that works even better (imo). It's called RootUnlocker and it worked for both the Nexus S running 4.0.3 and the LG Optimus 2x running 2.2. However, it didn't work for my Acer a500 but there's currently no method to root 3.2 on it. You need to down grade first.

[Q] New User needs a bit of help

Hi guys
i have buyed the nexus s couple weeks ago
im living in the netherlands
i want to update to ICS but i have a problem
i have very important emails & accounts and personal things on my phone
i know that i can make a backup with TB..but it needs root acces ofc.
is there a way to gain root acces without any wipes?
i readed couple guides it starts with unlocking the bootloader and that wipes everything
can someone help me?
If u have those files on your SD card u can back them up to your computer before u unlock the boot loader. Now if they're just saved on your email they won't go anywhere. Once u re log into your email account they will still be there. So before u proceed back up everything on your SD card to your computer including pictures if u have pic u don't want to be deleted.

2.3.6 upgrade won't wipe anything. Root, backup and then unlock bootloader to save the trouble, then fresh install ICS.

a simple way is to download this program called root unlock, you can download from this page http://www.unlockroot.com/, install it on your pc, it is easy to use ... so the phone can be easily rooted.

- make a backup with TB
- Copy whole SD card to my PC

- Flash ICS Rom ( dont know which one is good )

is this a good plan?

Ya that's fine. Happy flashing!

After you unlock boot loader flash a custom recovery, clockworkmod.
As for roms, I've been on cm9 and am very happy with it. Stable smooth and great battery life.

You CAN NOT Relock. The prime devs worked on it for months, and couldn't get anything working. If you decide to unlock you void your warranty and no longer get official ota's. You do get access to custom roms though.

Correct. The only reason I would recommend unlocking, is so that you can install a custom rom. If you do not want to install a custom rom you shouldn't unlock.

you can update, however not by ota. you update by flashing roms that are updated.
There may not be a way (yet) of relocking the bootloader, but there should be a way of preventing ASUS from logging the serial. From the decompiled unlock tool, the tool is sending something to https://mdm.asus.com/DMServer/DeviceState. However, that may not matter. In a previous thread about this (for the Transformer Prime), one developer found that the result returned from the ASUS server is stored in a variable that's never used

I doubt they blacklist it, they did after all provide the tool. Of course, they do say they won't officially support if you do unlock, but that doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't if you asked them.

SOMEHOW, the "Device is UnLocked" has disappeared from boot screen
As I mentioned here just earlier today (or the full thread here), the "Device is UnLocked" has vanished from my boot screen. The screen that first shows up after you start your TF300.
I had gone through A LOT the past couple of days trying to UN-BRICK my device. Once I fixed my TF300, the "Device is UnLocked" is no longer in the upper left-hand corner anymore.
I have no clue what I did, or even if it's really "Locked" again. All I know is that it's gone. I think I might have accidentally tweaked something that might have just turned off the actual "Device is UnLocked" text. But I don't know...

You first have to decide if you want to void your manufacturer warranty by unlocking the boot loader (so that you can install custom ROMs). You do not need to unlock the boot loader if you only want to root it.
However, once you upgrade to JellyBean, you won't be able to install NVFlash any more, so if you are planning to unlock it in the near future, you should seriously consider doing it now, and then install NVFlash.
If you decide to unlock, there's no problem in rooting it afterwards. If you decide NOT to unlock, but still want to root, you should do so BEFORE you upgrade to JellyBean, as there's currently no way to root a JellyBean installation on the TF700 (if you install JellyBean without root, you'll have to downgrade to ICS to root, and then upgrade to JellyBean again).
As you can see, it all depends on what you want to do with your device - now and in the future. There's no way to know if it'll be possible in the future to install NVFlash on a JB installation, but once you have installed JB, you CANNOT install NVFlash - not even if you roll back to ICS. So you have to decide if you want NVFlash or not, and if so, you need to unlock it while on ICS and proceed from there.
If you want to keep the locked bootloader and warranty: First, root it. Look for the tutorial here in the Forum, it's very easy, should be something like "Root with debugfs".
Then, download OTA Rootkeeper from the Market (Google Play). Use it to protect your root.
Afterwards, you can either try the normal OTA Update (Didn't work for me, too big of a jump), or follow the following tutorial to update from one revision to the next. (So you've gotta update around 4-5 times in total to get to the newest JB revision).

So I see.
Option 1) Rooted only and keep warranty - can't flash it.
Option 2) Root and unlock, lost warranty but be able to flash it. For this I need unlock the bootloader. And I would need to unlock to bootloader to install NvFlash, is it right?
What will be your recommendation? Do I need to flash it? The use would be recreational (internet/video/games) and travel laptop.

After rooted on ICS, you need to download OTA rootkeeper from the market to preserve root (keep a copy of root), then use dlpkg method (incremental upgrade) to JB. If you use Asus full JB firmware, it's going to wipe out your root. Once you on JB, use OTA root keeper to restore root, then you need to unlock your device before you can install custom recovery (TWRP/CWM). From here on you can flash any custom rom that you like. I highly recommend TWRP, it works well with tf700. Some people do have issue with CWM.

To install a custom recovery you need to unlock your device, which will void your warranty. If,after unlocking, you want to have a way to recover from any software-induced brick situations, then BEFORE YOU UPGRADE, read the nvflash thread and get the required files from your device. You cannot do this once you upgraded!

I can take a few days or weeks for new devices to become unlockable - apparently Asus' unlocking server is always behind. Usually it helps to be patient and try again after a few days.

You can do that by unpacking the UpdateLauncher zip once (another zip is inside) and putting it onto a microSD card, then boot the tablet in recovery mode (hold down Volume-down while powering on). Some guides say that you must rename the zip to something specific, I don't know if that is still true. Beware: if you upgrade, you will lose the ability to ever use nvflash because the new bootloader is more locked down and can't be downgraded. Also you will lose root by flashing a complete firmware.

Thanks. Ill just wait for the asus server to work then. I hope it doest take longer then a month
Came from the Prime to the Infinity and was hoping this device was smoother/faster and it seems to be even worse. Should I give up on Asus giving us good software? It's just frustrating having an S3 being so fast and smooth being a high end device and also having 4.1.1. Why the hell can't Asus get it right too?
Should I just unlock and get a custom rom on this? Is that the only way to get this tablet to be fast and smooth?
Sorry to butt in someones thread, but...Got my Infinity today at 11 AM.... Updated to JB, rooted, installed Titanium and all goodies.
Do not feel that it's any slower than Google Nexus 10.1 in no way. Ever screen, it's a less resolution per spec does not look any different.
Happy with it, great tab.

Yes, if you want your device to be fast and smooth you definitly need to unlock and install Cleanrom and Clemsyn kernel. Without them I probably throw mine in the trash.

I encountered a similar issue with another tab. I moved on from there to the TF700 only to relive the same experience. Next time I will do my research before buying another tab. I paid for the tab and I want to have complete control to 'abuse' it!
