Hi guys
i have buyed the nexus s couple weeks ago
im living in the netherlands
i want to update to ICS but i have a problem
i have very important emails & accounts and personal things on my phone
i know that i can make a backup with TB..but it needs root acces ofc.
is there a way to gain root acces without any wipes?
i readed couple guides it starts with unlocking the bootloader and that wipes everything
can someone help me?
If u have those files on your SD card u can back them up to your computer before u unlock the boot loader. Now if they're just saved on your email they won't go anywhere. Once u re log into your email account they will still be there. So before u proceed back up everything on your SD card to your computer including pictures if u have pic u don't want to be deleted.

Cool. Glad u found a way and happy rooting

2.3.6 upgrade won't wipe anything. Root, backup and then unlock bootloader to save the trouble, then fresh install ICS.
simple
a simple way is to download this program called root unlock, you can download from this page http://www.unlockroot.com/, install it on your pc, it is easy to use ... so the phone can be easily rooted.

i give it a try...
- so i will root the device
- make a backup with TB
- Copy whole SD card to my PC
- unlock bootloader
- Flash ICS Rom ( dont know which one is good )
- Restore SD Card
- Restore Settings and apps with TB
is this a good plan?
Guys anyone?
Ya that's fine. Happy flashing!
Oh the gummynex rom is nice, give it a try!
After you unlock boot loader flash a custom recovery, clockworkmod.
As for roms, I've been on cm9 and am very happy with it. Stable smooth and great battery life.

It's a Nexus, you can always root.
So I can root with the current root method with no problems?
Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.
Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)
ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..
p.s sorry to jack your thread man
the first time I used adb was yesterday to unlock my nexus s and it really wasnt too bad so you should be good
Will this guide work with 2.3.4 without wipe everything? (i havent unlocked bootloader) h**p://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/05/tutorial-rooting-unlock-bootloader-for.html ? If it's not, is there any way to root my nexus 2.3.4 with stock rom without wipe? I would appreciate any answers. Thank you.

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.
Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
After that, flash a custom roms by the developers. They already comes with root and updated kernels. Hope this helps
Its almost 12 at nite, off to bed i go.
I have been waiting for a while to get the OTA update to ICS on my Sensation XE and finally got it today in the UK. When i come to download and install the update it will download fine but as soon as its finished it says "The downloaded system software update is corrupted" and the only options are to download again or do nothing and stick with gingerbread - i don't really want to do either of those. I have tried to download the update about 20 times now with the same result!
I have found something on another forum who said a factory reset is the only cure for this but as i am not rooted or anything like that I cant properly backup my apps using titanium backup so i will lose all my progress in my games and stuff so I really don't want to do this unless I absolutely have no other choice.
I was wondering if anyone else on here has had this problem and found a way around it without doing a hard reset. I have already taken the battery out and left it for a while but that did nothing either.
Thanks in advance!
If u can't backup coz u r not rooted - move sensitive apps to SD (then ur personal data like saves in games is moved to sd), and then use "Apps Backup & Restore" app to backup all apk's from installed apps to sd. Then, backup ur SMS using system core feature from MEssages > Menu > BAck-up messages
That should be enough for you. But in my opinion you should do CLEAR install, and again after ICS update wipe to factory settings, because without this - phone is useless, believe me.
I hope my english is understandable

I have already done the SMS backup but not the app back up. I was wondering if the app you suggested to back up apps re links the apps back to the market once they have been restored like titanium backup does it?
I was also hoping someone could tell me if they have had to do a factory reset to solve the problem because I don't want to do a reset to find it hasn't solved the problem.
Thanks

Cheers eddy.
For doing this do I need to be s off and root with a custom recovery or is flashing a ruu different so I just have to put it somewhere and trick the phone into flashing it?
I think I'll do this method if doing a factory reset doesn't work as I'll be doing a fresh install anyway.
As Far As I know, to RUU you won't have to have S-OFF and Custom Recovery. Because if you installed Custom Recovery it will replace with the default HTC Recovery.
If you planned to have S-OFF later I would you recommend you to do it before upgrade, because I think right now no body have release out on how to get S-OFF on HTC's ICS yet.
Have you try to used different Micro SDCard before try to download the upgrade.
If you have a stock XE then the XE RUU is fine without S-OFF. Here's the link:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/3aa...00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_251961_signed.exe
As said above, S-OFF whilst still on 2.3 as you can't S-OFF with the new 1.27 HBOOT YET (it's coming soon, though). Then flash the RUU and you keep S-OFF

Not to revive an old thread, but I just wanted to add that using a new sd card worked for me, too.
Have a GSM Nexus S. Rooted it using a method that didn't unlock the bootloader while phone was using Gingerbread. Automatic update to ICS, and lost root. I got the phone in March, and about a month later it updated to ICS.
Reading about all methods of rooting. Problem is, I have some of these files both on the PC and on the phone. I have Titanium Backup but can't access it. I didn't get Superuser. (Have both on another phone) The other phone needed to be rooted again after an update, but it was at least a year in between Froyo and GB, so SuperOneClick had been updated. Not so now.
I have Android COMPOSITE ADB interface in Device Manager - none of the other tutorials show COMPOSITE. I probably have some of the other drivers stashed somewhere on the PC (XP laptop)
Do I just follow a rooting guide, or do I need to delete all the old stuff from PC first? Will the newer versions overwrite? All the instructions seem to be for a new root, not a re-root.
I really want TB back. I don't care about a special ROM - I don't game, don't need speed, just control and storage. I'd rather have TB freeze the apps than ICS.
Anyone know?
Thanks

If you're on 4.0.4 you need to unlock bootloader from fastboot. After that flash the latest cwm recovery and lastly flash the latest SU package. That's the only way for ICS on nexus S

I don't know whether to say thanks or not. Got the damn thing rooted, but couldn't get any files off the sd card/ internal storage. Messed with it all day, finally wound up installing CM 7.1.01 and got most stuff back.
I had been upgraded to ICS, is there a rom that would work? The phone now says 2.3.7 or something close.
I usually have problems that don't occur anywhere else. If I plugged in USB, I had all the android stuff under Android. Wouldn't find the driver with phone usb disconnected. Had to update the driver under Android and the place halfway down device manager that had the warning sign.
I finally got TB backup working and it reinstalled all the stuff from the sd card. Now what does CM get me? Where is a tutorial IN ENGLISH, not geek or video that I can read? I also seem to have aquired PDA net. Need info on that.
Thanks
Mate if you have TB working just backup all, boot phone in fastboot and from CMD flash the clockwork recovery. After that mount the SD and make a backup of the TB folder to your PC, just in case. Copy the stock ICS ROM without recovery and rooted that is in the Nexus S Android development part, to the SD card and flash it from CWM recovery. After that just restore your apps from TB.
Seems to me your not very techy so just stay with stock rooted ICS. And read all tutorials carefully before doing anything.

Would have loved to keep the stock rom. But couldn't get to internal.card. All. My stuff was on the card, and the phone just didn"t see it.. I wound up installing. CM 7 and in the process think stock rom was deleted. CM7 did see the card and TB restored all my stuff. There are some features of ICS I'd. Like back. Camera for one. Few other Minot things.. I can follow directions if all the directions are there. I don't do videos. I want something I can print out rather than trying to go back and forth trying to find something in a video. I can read faster. I spent half the day reading up on fixes. I read up on CM 7 but all it blurb ed about was the fancy stuff like gestures. Incognito I might like. One wiki had installing CM.as a solution. Nothing else searched for gave an answer. The same question would be asked and ignored. I Googled.
Sky Safari has 10,000 files. Ibird is just as big. That's why they install to internal card.

n00b question
I rooted my phone using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782. When I vol up and power should I see clockworkmod when not connected to the usb? I don't. I downloaded Rom Manager and nothing went into superuser?
What am I doing wrong??
I have to usb, cmd, fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img evey time?
Shouldn't it just stick?
What is the difference between unlocking the bootloader on my device and rooting my device? I understand that in order to root, you must unlock the bootloader first, but what exactly does each process do? Why does Asus provide the means to free your bootloader but not a full rooting of the device? Once I unlock, why can't I just download clockwork mod from the Play Store and start flashing roms?

You do not need to unlock to root, you need to unlock to install roms. Rooting would give you access to change some settings run apps that require root access adblock etc... unlocking allows you pretty much full control of your device at the cost of loss of your warranty.
Different?
I think in this is small mistake... for root you need unlock bootloader, becase when U want root this device U can do this with ZIP file, somewhere on XDA is thread about this, and if U want use CWM Recovery to root with using ZIP file U need unlock bootloader for install CWM recovery...unlock bootloader - for this is app from Asustek, U can use this after download and install on ur tablet but waranty is down...
root - if u got this u can use this dev. like super user....in ur terminal and for ur apps from Google Play too
different is probably in this: root is superuser access X unlock bootloader give u new opportunities for install ur ROMs and CWM
I´m sorry if I´m wrong....and sorry for my terrible english... I though about problem ... no about language

This is not true, you do not need to unlock the bootloader to get root, see the following topics:

Personally I used the tool in the 1st and 2nd post, the 2nd post is based on the 3rd post. I still have my bootloader locked because I don't want to lose my warranty, since I got my Transformer TF300 only recently and it was repaired already by Asus because of random reboots. There diagnosis was "system unstable" and replaced the mainboard. Since the repair I'm real happy now, the random reboots are gone.
Totally right. You can root without unlocking. So you can use apps like Titanium backup and so on.
If you like to flash custom Roms you need a Custom Recovery like CWM or TWRP. To get this you need to unlock your bootloader but doing this means no warranty any more.
If you brick your Pad with an unlocked bootloader and send it back to Asus you will have to pay for this (Was about 240,00€ for a User on a German Forum).

it comes down to what you want to do w/ the pad and how old it is. once you unlock the bootloader, you void your warranty w/ ASUS. they say it right there as you unlock. if the tab is brand new, wait a while. i rooted out of the box to gain access to some apps but did not unlock yet, my tab is only 2 months old. JB is just around the corner. waiting for that
when unlocked can install a custom recovery like Clockwork or Team Win, which in turn allows you to make backups and flash other ROMs. rooting just gives you super user privileges on your phone/tab so you can do things like browse the root of the tab, debloat apps, modify the build.prop using Root Explorer, install Titanium Backup to backup apps, run Browser2Ram, all the while keeping your warranty. a combination of being both rooted and unlocked is the ultimate goal for a habitual rom flasher

Download the latest CWM Recovery and flash it as you did the previous, would be smart to get the CWM Touch version.
Well lets see with a rooted phone, you can install apps from various APK files, some of which allow you to use your device as a tethered modem for a laptop or Tablet. What more can you do with a rooted phone, well you can install various custom ROM's, but if you are not familiar with that aspect, READ, READ, and READ some more take several days to read on how to do it, before you download anything to do it. NO ONE will take responsibility for anything that you do to your device, except for yourself. You brick it you buy it.
There are a LOT of custom ROMs out there, read up on them, and find one that suits you. Don't just flash the first one you see, be as best informed as you can possibly be.

Get Super Manager from market. Copy the whole EFS folder to an external sd card. Then from there copy it over to your comp. This way you have two backups of the whole thing.
