Jelly Bean for our Asus - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys do you think will we get android 4.1 for tf101 ??
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2

Given Asus' lackluster response to updating the TF101, I will be putting my money on CM10/AOKP when those guys gets working.
Also, in my experience, all of the problems I've had with my TF101 has gone away when I've replaced Asus' firmware with third party firmware. Chances are if Asus comes out with JB for the TF101, I still wont be running their build.

I think we will see a Jelly Bean update since Asus is actually really good with their updates and this should improve the performance considerably. I see so much despair about the lack of updates with the TF101 but compared to the MyTouch Slide 4g that I own it has an amazing amount of support. Asus has been good to us rooters and tech nerds more than any other company outside of Google itself! So yeah, I would expect an announcement in the next few months and maybe an update around October if we are lucky.

Agreed. If anything, asus has been almost TOO fast with updates and ends up borking things.

If you're an avid flash user I wouldn't rush to get JB anyway.
Adobe will stop flash support for JB.

From Adobe:
Beginning August 15th we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th.
The easiest way to ensure ongoing access to Flash Player on Android 4.0 or earlier devices is to use certified devices and ensure that the Flash Player is either pre-installed by the manufacturer or installed from Google Play Store before August 15th. If a device is upgraded from Android 4.0 to Android 4.1, the current version of Flash Player may exhibit unpredictable behavior, as it is not certified for use with Android 4.1. Future updates to Flash Player will not work. We recommend uninstalling Flash Player on devices which have been upgraded to Android 4.1.

This is my one quarrel with JB, darned Adobe >:c

that and the fact that chrome is the default browser so you need to install another one just to use flash

Will it even work though? Flash on JB

they said it may work but it is not supported its like running a honeycomb app on ics it may work or it may not
an dim pretty sure i read somewhere that it was up to the oem's to support it

Most likely. The Motorola Xoom is confirmed to receive 4.1 already so why not the transformer? They both have the same specs.

[Q] What about 3.1?

Hi everyone,
I have my eeepad transformer preordered to buy the 32 or 16 GB model, still don't know which one will be the first one...
But, I know that the galaxy tab 10.1 will be upgradeable to android 3.1, and the same happens with the xoom, but, will our future (or current) eeepad transformer see this android version? I'm only saying it because if android 3.1 won't appear on the eeepad, I think the best thing we could do is to buy the galaxy tab
Thanks in advance

Yes the GTab is upgradable but when will samsung do it?
Samsung are notoriously slow at upgrading anything!!! plus the GTab has touchwiz which will take more to time for the developers at samsung to get it ready.
If you really want to be negative, maybe google will have an unexpected downturn within the current economic climate and go broke, then all of us will have obsolete devices and we're be forced to buy ipads or windows tablets
I seem to remember reading on another thread that Asus support said that 3.1 would be available on June.
Check this video of the Xoom running HC 3.1
It looks really fast and much more functional.

I think it's possible, but is there any reason? The official update will come in mid June, less than a month left. And it's possible someone will leak it before.

Good to see they already have a version they are happy to distribute to regional sales and support teams - means it is stable enough to have internal testing.

[TOOL] ASUS Update firmware repacker for ClockworkMod recovery

Hi
I wrote a little tool for my dev usage but it might be interesting for you too:
Its purpose is to repack an update zip as delivered by ASUS to a ClockworkMod recovery standard update.zip
Recovery is not replaced so you keep your custom one installed.
Usages:
Code:

Really excited to see you developing on the Transformer. Your help with the Samsung Epic has proved to make my phone excellent. Saw your tweets about Voodoo Sound on the Transformer! Can't wait! Definitely one of my favorite devs and I hope to work with you in the near future here on the Transformer
seems like a great tool. thanks!

Hey guys thanks for the support
At first I just bought the transformer as temporary replacement in waiting for the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 or 8.9 but it seems its postponed somehow ^^
I don't know if I'll keep it long because it's an interesting device though − but also flawed in terms of graphic performance, even with 3.1.
I'm not sure Tegra 2 is powerful enough to do the job properly.
Now: updated source with automatic rooting support.

Now I'll upload some ROMs assembled with it!

Yea. I have noticed that too. Both my Transformer and my Moto Atrix are tegra 2 powered and they are....well...disappointing as far as gfx performance.
That's ironic being Tegra is made by nVidia....a gfx company hahaha.

I mean, if Samsung is tegra tab(rumors), what will you do then ?

I'll be able to port the full Voodoo sound on Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, with all advanced functions including hardware EQ, this is where SGT surpasses the Transformer for me.
Also, WM8994 headphone amp is more powerful than WM8903 implementation in Transformer (but not by a large margin).
Also I hope Samsung browser will be better and they fixed the graphic driver issue (huge FPS loss on rotated display) but It's just hopes.

Sorry this tool is obsolete now with incremental updates firmwares.
Does this mean that the incremental OTA updates does not unroot rooted devices?
Or that the tool cannot reliably process these incremental OTA updates?

The OTAs do unroot your device. The tool cannot reliably process the incremental OTAs.
I've been releasing CWM-customized incremental updates and working on my own tool in the meantime.
Well there is always the prime I am sure that will do the job.

[Q] netflix - is it ever gonna hit a Tegra 2 tablet?

I'm trying to get a feel with Netflix & Android tablets - and so far - I'm starting to have doubts that it'll ever be available on the Tegra 2 tablet.
My understanding is it's a security - hardware issue - to keep people from stealing / ripping netflix content - that's keeping the barn doors shut. Or perhaps Android has their own plans to monetize Google Movies. But as more time goes by - I'm less optimistic about getting Netflix on an android tablet.
Any thoughts - or is there something recent that I've missed re: Netflix coming out on this tablet - or others in the near future?
Thanks
If it does come to an Android tablet, it'll still be very much SD quality. Look at the iPad.

not sure of resolution or bit rate data on the netflix stream to an ipad, but it's pretty damn good quality on that screen.
i'd love to have it on my transformer... and my fascinate.... but i guess i have it on my xboxes, my ipad, and my X so i cant complain too much.
i'd really like it on the transformer though, especially with the HDMI out.

Tried every way possible and can't get it to work. If someone does get it working I would love to know how. As far as making it to tegra 2 tablets im sure it will make it eventually. NVIDIA has a big presence and it would make their chips more attractive if they had Netflix support.
The evo got it,and as far as i can recall Netflix said it wouldn't since the evo has no dem support on the chip. That apparently changed as they settled for software drm. Recently it was removed when the gingerbread update officially launched for the evo, but prior to that it worked fine on cm7 which is aosp gb. My guess is it will probably come in time.

Xoom has Gingerbread hidden if you up your screen dpi settings, I wonder if it works on it. But seeing how unusable the GB is on the Xoom in that environment I doubt it is of benefit here.
The problem isn't Tegra 2, it's HoneyComb. Netflix simply hasn't gotten around to making a version compatible with HoneyComb.
Let's face it, until the TF came out, the HoneyComb tablet market was tiny.
Netflix is working on many android phones including my Nexus One. In fact the quality is great, especially compared to Slingbox. I think it is just a matter of time before Honeycomb gets Netflix, there are just too many Honycomb/Tegra 2 units being sold for them to loose that market.

Do you still have it working? I am running Vegan Tab rom and have never had it fully functional, use it as a que manager but unable to watch. I have been using a home server software, Playon, for the past 2 years and it works good to watch Netflix. It also gives me access to other content and I can also watch videos that are on my home computer. But I would still like to be able to use the Netflix app.
Netflix worked on my Archos 101. Kind of missing it right now since the TF has no netflix.

Still works on mine. I am using cyanogen mod though.
Well, it's certainly not specific to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. The Samsung Epic, for example, still doesn't have an official Netflix app, and it's neither Honeycomb nor Tegra 2. And I'm sure there are still more Android devices that don't have Netflix than do...

[Q] Noob question about ICS

I am getting a bit confused with all the different versions of android.
ICS should be based on android 4.0.x and xoom is a tablet which uses android 3.0.x.
What happens to all the apps that are tablet only? aka only 3.0.x? Will they still run on 4.0.X?

The Xoom has the hardware capability to run Android 4.0. The apps that work on Honeycomb (and gingerbread, froyo, etc) mostly work on ice cream sandwich, but the developer of the apps need to update their apps to make them compatible.
So google is just making it so the phone/tablet work on the same version? No more updates for 3.0.X?

As far as I know, correct.
This is actually something that mildly concerns me. I have paid for a few tablet only apps. I assume these will be supported with ICS.
But what about apps that were paid for in GB? Say someone bought Splashtop for phones and they are running a phone with GB that gets upgraded to ICS. Will the app they purchased still be able to run on their device? Will it be optimized for ICS? Or will they need to buy the "tablet only" version?
I have a feeling this will be on an app by app (or developer by developer) case, but hopefully there won't be many issues.
Apps will have to be updated to work with ICS
Think about it. These apps, in order to remain relevant, will need to be updated to ICS, sooner rather than later. It's the new OS that all new and many older devices will be running. So don't worry...it will take a bit, but will probably work out better for us in the long run, as all those apps scaled for phones will also be able to scale for the Xoom.

Out of all the apps I have on my Xoom. So far I only have 1 app that won't run on ICS and supposedly the developer is working on an upgrade. And a good portion of those are regular phone apps. Don't sweat it. Most developers are very responsible and provide upgrades to paying customers. And the advantages of ICS are worth it.

adobe won't support flash on Jelly Bean, your thoughts?

Adobe announced today that they won't support flash on jelly bean devices, what do you think I know that I would miss slash very much as many web sites out there use flash as their primary way of streaming video, true some a them support Html 5, but most of them don't, what do you think?
Jelly Bean isn't much of a change system wise from ICS (most of the changes were added software) and users have reported success with the ICS version of flash working on JB.
Seeing how slow its been getting ICS on non Nexus devices, its probably going to be 2013 before we see JB shipping on most new devices. Its around 1.5 to 2 years before most people switch to a new device unless you have to have the latest. If market share of new Android versions continues to be lagging its likely JB won't be unsupported by new software until around 2015.
Hopefully by them HTML5 will be more widely used, or else we'll get enough JB users that refuse to upgrade forcing developers to still support it, kind of like Windows XP.
