I'm trying to get a feel with Netflix & Android tablets - and so far - I'm starting to have doubts that it'll ever be available on the Tegra 2 tablet.
My understanding is it's a security - hardware issue - to keep people from stealing / ripping netflix content - that's keeping the barn doors shut. Or perhaps Android has their own plans to monetize Google Movies. But as more time goes by - I'm less optimistic about getting Netflix on an android tablet.
Any thoughts - or is there something recent that I've missed re: Netflix coming out on this tablet - or others in the near future?
Thanks
If it does come to an Android tablet, it'll still be very much SD quality. Look at the iPad.

not sure of resolution or bit rate data on the netflix stream to an ipad, but it's pretty damn good quality on that screen.
i'd love to have it on my transformer... and my fascinate.... but i guess i have it on my xboxes, my ipad, and my X so i cant complain too much.
i'd really like it on the transformer though, especially with the HDMI out.

Tried every way possible and can't get it to work. If someone does get it working I would love to know how. As far as making it to tegra 2 tablets im sure it will make it eventually. NVIDIA has a big presence and it would make their chips more attractive if they had Netflix support.
The evo got it,and as far as i can recall Netflix said it wouldn't since the evo has no dem support on the chip. That apparently changed as they settled for software drm. Recently it was removed when the gingerbread update officially launched for the evo, but prior to that it worked fine on cm7 which is aosp gb. My guess is it will probably come in time.

Not on Tegra 2 Honeycomb devices.
I am really anxious to get it on my tablet as well. But I can wait since I have it on everything else that I own.

It does work on tegra 2 tablets. I have had it working on a viewsonic gtablet for over a month.
Rumors say the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 has Netflix preinstalled.

So the problem is a Honeycomb issue and not a Tegra 2 issue? Then maybe there is hope. Has anyone gotten it working on other Tegra 2 Gingerbread devices?

Yep, had it working on the gtab as well.
I guess the issue here is not the Tegra but the Honeycomb and Netflix.

Xoom has Gingerbread hidden if you up your screen dpi settings, I wonder if it works on it. But seeing how unusable the GB is on the Xoom in that environment I doubt it is of benefit here.
The problem isn't Tegra 2, it's HoneyComb. Netflix simply hasn't gotten around to making a version compatible with HoneyComb.
Let's face it, until the TF came out, the HoneyComb tablet market was tiny.
Netflix is working on many android phones including my Nexus One. In fact the quality is great, especially compared to Slingbox. I think it is just a matter of time before Honeycomb gets Netflix, there are just too many Honycomb/Tegra 2 units being sold for them to loose that market.

Do you still have it working? I am running Vegan Tab rom and have never had it fully functional, use it as a que manager but unable to watch. I have been using a home server software, Playon, for the past 2 years and it works good to watch Netflix. It also gives me access to other content and I can also watch videos that are on my home computer. But I would still like to be able to use the Netflix app.
Netflix worked on my Archos 101. Kind of missing it right now since the TF has no netflix.

Still works on mine. I am using cyanogen mod though.
Well, it's certainly not specific to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. The Samsung Epic, for example, still doesn't have an official Netflix app, and it's neither Honeycomb nor Tegra 2. And I'm sure there are still more Android devices that don't have Netflix than do...

What do you guys think?
Looks like a Gtab, smells like a gtab, tastes like a gtab... must be a gtab!
I tell you what, the chinese company that makes this thing is doing a great job marketing it to companies with big names. Good for them.
The gtab is manufactured in China by Malata and then sold to other manufacturers to be rebranded. Other variations as mentioned in other threads are woow, zpad, advent vega among others.
I think it'll be interesting to compare the GUI on Onkyo's tablet.
I don't know a lot about how this stuff works...if it's the same hardware, would the Onkyo tablet be able to run the XDA gTab MODs right out of the box? If the Onkyo GUI is even better than the XDA gTab MODs, would we be able to port it somehow to run on the gTab?
I'm running TNTlite 3.1.2 and am very satisfied, but I'm interested to see what the Onkyo tablet ships with.

My question is for anyone who already has the Transformer. I understand that it will connect to your desktop, as a mirror. Does this work for Netflix? If you have Netflix on your computer and you connect the Transformer to it, will it stream through properly?
Also, can you connect to your computer if you are at work, or just away from home, or is it when only on the same home network? Not sure I've ever seen this question answered specifically.
Thanks for your info.......
Yes, using the built in software, it should be fast enough. nascar.com uses a very flash heavy app for ausio/raceview and when I use splashtop on my iphone, it works perfectly with audio and their live 3d video with no stuttering.
Cool, thanks......should suffice until the Netflix app gets ok'ed.......
Semi-related question: Are we sure about, hoping for, or excluding the possibility of the NetFlix App coming to this device? I remember some big controversy about most Android devices not being able to run NetFlix due to DRM or something?
The Nvidia Tegra 2 processor basically lacks the hardware DRM required by the RIAA. They have ridiculous requirement, but Netflix has stated it is in the works. Motorola has been OK'd and it sounds like Netflix will come on a device by device basis.
Hopefully some devs will be able to get the Xoom version running on this tab (if it comes to the Xoom, or other Tegra device). Apparently DRM is built into Honeycomb, so I'm the hardware limitation wont matter. It seems like a better way to implement DRM anyway, it seems like it would make the applications more universal.

There won't be a "Xoom" version. There will be a Honeycomb version, which will run on the Transformer, the Iconia, and the Xoom.
You wont be able to just go to the Netflix website and stream, they use Microsoft Silverlight for the DRM streaming
Currently only Snapdragon processors will have Netflix support
Here is a quote about Netflix and the Tegra 2 from January, 2011
"Netflix is using the Tegra 2 development platform to bring the Netflix experience to Android super phones and tablets. We're working closely with NVIDIA to ensure Netflix takes full advantage of Tegra's outstanding acceleration and security capabilities." -- Greg Peters, Vice President, Product Development at Netflix

I was referring to the post above me stating it will be on a device by device basis. While I think it's stupid to do that, it's happened before. Think Skype.

Got it working on my DHD VIA a certain site ill give it a try on my TF
DESIRE HD using leedroid. ASUS TRANSFORMER using prime
same here,already uinstalled
Another one here...1st purchased Asphalt 6 HD under Motorola Xoom and since that worked on my TF I thought of giving NOVA 2 a shot...unfortunately crashes after the intro vid with no warning. Asphalt 6 however works flawlessly.
Just sent Gameloft an email asking them if there is a possible fix...otherwise I have requested a refund.
I've heard NOVA2 works on stock 3.1 ROM
The xoom and iconia versions should work for the tf however the latest versions check what device you have and since its a tf and not one or their officially supported devices it won't work. Older versions will install but like the posts above say it crashes after intro video.
It must be possible to trick the game in thinking we have a xoom somehow???

IDK about that, I was playing Nova 1 (for Xoom) on my TF101 just the other day. Unless its a recent update.
I have not tired Nova 2... although it does work for the Xoom, you might try that DL.
Tried NOVA2 and it kept force closing, like others have said.
Asphalt 6HD kept force closing too during the game (didn't really care for it anyway, NFS seems better).
Order and Chaos currently seems to be about the only thing that works (DH2HD doesn't seem to be able to download the files it needs yet).
This is all while running 3.2 STOCK.

Also, I have Nova 1, and Spiderman both working on my TF101 successfully.

No, I have tried stock 3.1, stock 3.2 as well as Prime and Nova 2 crashes after the video each time.
I have also purchased Xoom or Acer Iconia Tab versions of Nova, Hero of Sparta, Let's Golf, Asphalt 6, Uno and Spiderman and they all work except for Let's Golf which won't even download.
Hi Guys ... and Gals,
Am thinking of getting a TF for my wife ... 16GB without the dock.
The experience I have with Android is ... well, pleasant! I use the Nexus S.
Well, since I'm using the Nexus S, I would be interested to know if the TF comes with the original Honey Comb that can be updated directly from Google or if I would have to wait for updates from ASUS.
Yes I know all things are possible with a root, but:
a) I don't want to be messing with her tablet everytime.
b) I think the ASUS keyboard with the numbers on the top line is nice. Is it available as a separate download? Is it available for the mobile too?
I'm currently on holiday and would like to buy it so ... before I move back to is there any particular problems I should look out for?
Thanks for any help
Updates happen through Asus. Though they seem to be on time with them.
I think all tablet updates come from the manufacturer

Thanks both
So, the only way to get newer versions IF Asus start behaving like HTC or Samsung is to root it and put in a custom rom! Fine ... no probs. Atleast while the going is good, we don't have to worry.
Any known problems I have to look out for before a purchase?
Thanks again.

It's not the known problems you should be concerned about, but the unknown ones.
Get a newer model. Serial code should start with B60xxxxxxxxxxx. B40 is original. B50 middle.
I have a B50 and its nice. Other then that be on the look out for screen bleed. iPad2s have bleed just like everyone else. Some are extreme. Most are barely noticeable. Just keep an eye out.

Asus made some subtle changes ( icons on the status bar) but asus was the first company to push out the 3.1 update ( after the xoom )
Thanks ... guess that will help
It's normal that the update come from the manufacturer.
Asus must have to include the specific drivers for it's tablet (not all the hardware is the same, even if the main platform is based on Tegra2)
It also made few modifications for apps integration and visuals.

The Xoom was only first in the US, everywhere else the Transformer got 3.1 before the Xoom. Actually the Xoom only has 3.1 in US, Australia,Japan and China.
it just has a few mods (buttons + some widgets and wallpapers)
What was the determination on running Honeycomb apps on the Kindle Fire? I had read somewhere that they would not work because they were only compatible with HC but has anyone actually tried to see if they will run? I would be very curious to know if they work because the phone apps are a little awkward at times on the larger screen of the kindle.
If someone has apks for any HC apps and would be willing to post them I'd be more than happy to try them out and report back with what works and what doesn't, maybe get a dedicated compatibility list going until someone releases an ICS rom for kindle.
The Fire is running Gingerbread so any HC apps would refuse to install. If HC had been open source Amazon probably would have used it since it is more suited for tablets.
They will probably issue an update with ICS so tablet apps can be used, but since the Kindle runs such a heavily modified version of Android, it will be a while before we see an Amazon issued ICS update.
This would be so awesome I've been doing a lot of searching on this for the past hour. It seems the consistent answer is that we have to wait for ics.. :-!
We may see CM9 on this long before Amazon releases an update. They already have ICS booting on the Fire and it looks pretty stable, but there isn't much hardware support yet. Looks promising though:

Many of the apps are more tablet optimized to take advantage of the extra screen space provided. If you look up Gmail for honeycomb you can see what I mean.
Honeycomb Gmail actually kind of sucks on a 7" tablet. It's really made for the 10"ers, on a 7" it's just crammed like you're back on a 2.5" phone screen.
