[Q] (Q) Possible for Netflix? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My question is for anyone who already has the Transformer. I understand that it will connect to your desktop, as a mirror. Does this work for Netflix? If you have Netflix on your computer and you connect the Transformer to it, will it stream through properly?
Also, can you connect to your computer if you are at work, or just away from home, or is it when only on the same home network? Not sure I've ever seen this question answered specifically.
Thanks for your info.......

Yes, using the built in software, it should be fast enough. nascar.com uses a very flash heavy app for ausio/raceview and when I use splashtop on my iphone, it works perfectly with audio and their live 3d video with no stuttering.

Cool, thanks......should suffice until the Netflix app gets ok'ed.......

Semi-related question: Are we sure about, hoping for, or excluding the possibility of the NetFlix App coming to this device? I remember some big controversy about most Android devices not being able to run NetFlix due to DRM or something?

The Nvidia Tegra 2 processor basically lacks the hardware DRM required by the RIAA. They have ridiculous requirement, but Netflix has stated it is in the works. Motorola has been OK'd and it sounds like Netflix will come on a device by device basis.

Hopefully some devs will be able to get the Xoom version running on this tab (if it comes to the Xoom, or other Tegra device). Apparently DRM is built into Honeycomb, so I'm the hardware limitation wont matter. It seems like a better way to implement DRM anyway, it seems like it would make the applications more universal.

There won't be a "Xoom" version. There will be a Honeycomb version, which will run on the Transformer, the Iconia, and the Xoom.

You wont be able to just go to the Netflix website and stream, they use Microsoft Silverlight for the DRM streaming
Currently only Snapdragon processors will have Netflix support
Here is a quote about Netflix and the Tegra 2 from January, 2011
"Netflix is using the Tegra 2 development platform to bring the Netflix experience to Android super phones and tablets. We're working closely with NVIDIA to ensure Netflix takes full advantage of Tegra's outstanding acceleration and security capabilities." -- Greg Peters, Vice President, Product Development at Netflix

I was referring to the post above me stating it will be on a device by device basis. While I think it's stupid to do that, it's happened before. Think Skype.

[Resolved] Netflix?

When is Android getting a Netflix app that supports streaming?

I have a Netflix account that begs to be streamed on my 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab.
My Tab works fine with several video streaming sites - but Netflix refuses to install directly from their web site...saying that my device is not supported.
I understand the process. But I'm growing a strong resentment of Netflix's attitude about this whole thing. They imply that they just haven't certified that the Galaxy Tab is compatible with their streaming service. Yet many comparable android devices are. Sheesh, how long could it take to check that out?
I have a feeling that Netflix has made a deal somewhere to delay or obfuscate the use of devices competitive to the iPad (or maybe some other tablet). Who knows?
But it is frustrating to say the least.
i had read somewhere that netflix did not want to release it until all problems were worked out, and since there are many different versions of Android (EVO, DESIREHD, NEXUS) they wanted to have a universal. To say the least android required more from the dev team. Should be out very soon, but if not im sure there are leaks somewhere.

netflix??

Heyguys couldn't find anything on search is there a way to watch Netflix on my gtab?
No app available...
Playon
I use playon. It works for me.
Another option
If you are mostly interested in TV shows you can do what I did and get TV Shows Stream. Try the free version first of course . The full version costs $4 but well worth it to me. I was really bummed about Netflix not working until I got this instead. It's great.
Susie
i also use PLAYON and TV Shows Stream. Best software out there for it. But I also do use Tversity
netflix IS working on an android app. i dont know when it is going to be released or what stage of development its in. i do know from reading around that netflix hired and put a team together of android developers.

From what I've red the main hold up is DRM. It looks like newer snapdragon devices will get it first because qualcomm has made steps to secure their processors.

[Q] Transformer as netbook replacement

Hi, just wanted to get a quick check on what the Transformer currently supports. I'm trying to decide whether it can be a netbook replacement. My essential needs are:
1. netflix/hulu - I don't think apps are available for these yet right? anyway to get them to work?
2. sound recording through USB - I need to hook up an external USB microphone for recording. I assume there are adequate sound processing apps already?
Thanks!
There is currently a way to get the browser to play Hulu videos.
Netflix app was just released and is adding support for more devices. The TF isn't officially supported, but we're hoping for that or a modded version soon.
Not sure about recording, although newer versions of android promise full USB host compatibility.
Hope that helps!

Thanks! So a lot of partial support and hopes. I was lucky enough to find one and it's on its way from Walmart. Just need to decide if I should keep it or just return it. I really want to keep it but don't need so many pieces of electronics sitting around the house.

[Q] netflix - is it ever gonna hit a Tegra 2 tablet?

I'm trying to get a feel with Netflix & Android tablets - and so far - I'm starting to have doubts that it'll ever be available on the Tegra 2 tablet.
My understanding is it's a security - hardware issue - to keep people from stealing / ripping netflix content - that's keeping the barn doors shut. Or perhaps Android has their own plans to monetize Google Movies. But as more time goes by - I'm less optimistic about getting Netflix on an android tablet.
Any thoughts - or is there something recent that I've missed re: Netflix coming out on this tablet - or others in the near future?
Thanks
If it does come to an Android tablet, it'll still be very much SD quality. Look at the iPad.

not sure of resolution or bit rate data on the netflix stream to an ipad, but it's pretty damn good quality on that screen.
i'd love to have it on my transformer... and my fascinate.... but i guess i have it on my xboxes, my ipad, and my X so i cant complain too much.
i'd really like it on the transformer though, especially with the HDMI out.

Tried every way possible and can't get it to work. If someone does get it working I would love to know how. As far as making it to tegra 2 tablets im sure it will make it eventually. NVIDIA has a big presence and it would make their chips more attractive if they had Netflix support.
The evo got it,and as far as i can recall Netflix said it wouldn't since the evo has no dem support on the chip. That apparently changed as they settled for software drm. Recently it was removed when the gingerbread update officially launched for the evo, but prior to that it worked fine on cm7 which is aosp gb. My guess is it will probably come in time.

Not on Tegra 2 Honeycomb devices.
I am really anxious to get it on my tablet as well. But I can wait since I have it on everything else that I own.

It does work on tegra 2 tablets. I have had it working on a viewsonic gtablet for over a month.
Rumors say the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 has Netflix preinstalled.

So the problem is a Honeycomb issue and not a Tegra 2 issue? Then maybe there is hope. Has anyone gotten it working on other Tegra 2 Gingerbread devices?

Yep, had it working on the gtab as well.
I guess the issue here is not the Tegra but the Honeycomb and Netflix.

Xoom has Gingerbread hidden if you up your screen dpi settings, I wonder if it works on it. But seeing how unusable the GB is on the Xoom in that environment I doubt it is of benefit here.
The problem isn't Tegra 2, it's HoneyComb. Netflix simply hasn't gotten around to making a version compatible with HoneyComb.
Let's face it, until the TF came out, the HoneyComb tablet market was tiny.
Netflix is working on many android phones including my Nexus One. In fact the quality is great, especially compared to Slingbox. I think it is just a matter of time before Honeycomb gets Netflix, there are just too many Honycomb/Tegra 2 units being sold for them to loose that market.

Do you still have it working? I am running Vegan Tab rom and have never had it fully functional, use it as a que manager but unable to watch. I have been using a home server software, Playon, for the past 2 years and it works good to watch Netflix. It also gives me access to other content and I can also watch videos that are on my home computer. But I would still like to be able to use the Netflix app.
Netflix worked on my Archos 101. Kind of missing it right now since the TF has no netflix.

Still works on mine. I am using cyanogen mod though.
Well, it's certainly not specific to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. The Samsung Epic, for example, still doesn't have an official Netflix app, and it's neither Honeycomb nor Tegra 2. And I'm sure there are still more Android devices that don't have Netflix than do...

Nvidia shield console vs tablet

I need a little clarification. The Nvidia console is running the same type of android as the tablet but has integration with Android TV. So outside of a little bit of a spec boost why can't android TV be done on the Nvidia shield tablet using Console mode hooked up to a TV via HDMI? I'm really not seeing the difference in the two products other than some specs and hardware.

I just tried it then with my Xperia Z2 Tablet, I downloaded the apk from: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/leanback-launcher/. Then pressed home and selected it as my launcher. I then plugged my Xbox 360 controller into my OTG Cable, then into the Tablet. I was able to launch Leo's fortune without a hiccup. Try for yourself.
So technically I could do this with a MHL to HDMI adaptor, but im still going to be getting the Nvidia Shield because I want something permanent in my loungeroom

Did you have to root to do this? Also do you only need the launcher apk or any other files? Not sure if all the services would run the same.
My original point is I have the shield tablet not sure why it can't do exactly the same thing as the console.

I do have root but sideloading an APK doesnt require root. Try it yourself.
If you want that full Android TV experience though, I'd go with the Shield TV
I guess I don't k ow why the tablet can't do what the console does. They are so similar.

Maybe because they're two separate devices that are different things. While I guess I can see what you mean about them being similar, they're different form factors, meant fit different purposes. If you must, install adb drivers and sideload the launcher, or just transfer the apk and install. Tbh though, you're not missing out. True story - it's just a phone without its own screen with a limited launcher. The search function is kind of cool , but nothing amazing. You can say show me movies that won an Oscar in 2012 , or show me movies with Kevin Hart, and it will show you movies, but mostly not what your looking for. I only bought it because ive been streaming games via moonlight on my note 4, and I thought it would be nice to stream them to my tv.

Actually that is what I would like. Contextual search. Appletv is a letdown. Chrome cast has been good but I rather have the interface and the contextual search. I like how androidtv is laid out and interacts with Google now. With that said I already us the tablet so I not going to get the console, which brings me to the reason I am questioning why I can't recreate the same experience. I would like there is more than just the launcher.

Little bit of a spec boost? At least twice as powerful, and 4K at 60FPS to boot.
It also uses the android TV platform which even though it is based on 5.1.1 it is different then the tablet os.
Also the hardware is different.

Beside the spec boost what I want to to flash the android TV platform on my tablet but haven't seen a thread that does this. The lea back launcher is unresponsive when I use it (cannot tap anything on the screen).
