It seems Jelly Bean is rollin' out soon :fingers-crossed: When would Infinity receive this version? Or should we wait and get the Infinity already installed with this version?
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/jelly-bean-android-4-1-revealed-by-google/
nice. guess i will hold on to my xoom for a while, but im still getting the infinity.
I personally refused to hold my breath and got the Infinity yesterday (me = lucky bastard). Here in Holland, only the 64 GB version will be released initially, by the way.
I don't know what the splendid chefs in here will come up with, but based on my experiences with my SGS2 and all the custom ROMs I've tried on it, I'd prefer most of their cuisine to ASUS' mainstream cooking any day. I like the stock ROM enough to let it be for a while, but I'm going to root it this afternoon, if possible. I need my TB...
I can wait too get one. I will have to root it as soon as possible. I can't live without TB. It is so much easier than waiting on Google or reinstalling manually

Well Asus usually is pretty quick with updates, and they've already been working with the Nexus 7, so they're familiar with the code for it. I'd expect them to have a Jelly Bean update out within a month.

TB = Pulmonary tuberculosis?
Ah. Just found it. For anyone else reading this thread,
TB = Titanium Backup.
Of course.

LOL TB. I know, every time I read it, I have to think Titanium or Tuberculosis.

Hi dskw, sorry for not replying that quickly. I must've missed your reply.
I used the process referenced in this thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
Make sure you have killed off Asus Sync (under WIndows, CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Process). It will interfere to the point of plain inhibition. ' Ot of the box, I couldn't get root acces, but I installed Superuser and Busybox from the Play Store and all was fine. Other than that, all went smoothly for me. Have been running root now for a few days, so at least it is effective and stable.
ADDITION: make sure to try out the sio scheduler swap-out as well. It is one of the main reasons to root the TF700 at the moment, since it does make a (slight) improvement on throughput overall. I will try and find the reference for that procedure as well and post it here, but I'm on a busy train now and people are starting to look at me with this funny look on their faces. :S

Earlier on, I couldn't get what people were talking about either. Being active in the medical field (and having a military background), I'm pretty much used to avalanches of acronyms that you just have to look up. The bane of techie discussions.

Never mind, I did the rooting on my own with the same method.
But the scheduler swap-out is indeed interesting!
I've looked into VoltageControl but it seems like the stock firmware comes only with the noop scheduler.
And next time the people on the train look funny tell them:
YES, it is NOT an Apple! Believe it or stop starring!

You can find the sio swap thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714253 (with the ATP Tweak main thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735887)
You'll need both the app and the scheduler itself, but both are available from the first thread. Have fun!
And as far the people on the train are concerned, I just try and ignore them completely. They'd never understand anyway...

I called Best Buy about two weeks ago to inquire about preorder and the lady started rattling off the specs as she saw them on the screen in front of her. Everything sounded on point so I feel like I can trust the accuracy of her information. What caught my attention was when she said "Jelly Bean". I stopped her and said "Wait, what?". She explained that her info read that the 700 was supposed to have ICS but had "Just changed, and now it's showing Android Jelly Bean for this tablet when it goes on sale". She was sure of this and even doublechecked her data to confirm.
We might see a very welcome update early next week, folks. I wouldn't be surprised.

Jelly Bean won't solve any of the real problems right (e.g. IO), because those are most likely related either to the kernel and/or hardware?

Anyone have an idea how hard it would be to port this tiamat kernel over to Transformer? built for XOOM and others, and the XOOM hardware is near identical right? Just a thought, this thread has the info and link to the github of the sources.

Yeah, I was going to PM him, but he has PMs disabled, and I wasn't going to post in the thread because people hate that, me included. There is nothing more annoying in a thread when someone else comes in asking to do this all to their device. While this is a situation where at least the device internals are pretty similar, still not a polite thing to do. The github of his work should be enough for any dev here to port the work over pretty easily I'd think. We'll see though.

The hardware is fairly similar but they are based on two completely different OEM boards. Transformer=Ventana, Xoom=Stingray.
The Tiamat kernel modificationc could possibly be ported to the transformer kernel, but it isn't as straight forward and simple as you might think.
definitely would be sweet.. dual 1.6GHZ sounds pretty good
Hopefully we get some support soon.. I wish I knew how to do this stuff.

And I hope we get some development on this soon. It'd be a shame to see people sticking to products like the xoom, just because the TF is so limited in its availability. We need availability to pick up for this product.

Its not limited in just availability, its limited in 'mod-ability'.. It could just be the product maker following the guidelines for that particular board and making use of 'security' features specific to that board, but its still a pain in the ass. Work was put in to make the end user work harder to be able to customize.
I have the gtab (harmony), Xoom (stingray) , and eeepad (ventana). The gtab is the fastest, the easiest to mod, the hardest to brick.. and the heaviest with the worst screen. The eeepad is the slowest, the worst to mod and the lightest.. guess what .. best screen.
I am typing this on the gtab tho.. and I just got the eeepad today. It'll probably collect dust. Tried to play south park (originally avi/xvid/mp3) converted/muxed to mp4/xvid/aac and the Asus would play it... but volume control was not working it was full blast or mute. My gtab plays xvid avi/mp3 without a hiccup. Any other format I can throw at it too (sans multichannel audio and high profile h264). Its really surprising how far this has come. Since its oc'd every which way, it makes everything else seem very very slow. Only thing I haven't been able to get oc'd yet is emc.
Getting the ability and the clocks setup for the Asus was a breeze. Configuring/adjusting /making sense of all the bits and pieces of dvfs was not. speedo_id is a new one to me, and that seems to be the value that is read from fuse data and locks down max clocks
You guys got Blades and Netarchy on the case. You don't need me lol. I would LOVE to have Netarchy working on stingray.

True, with a locked bootloader, we are so limited. Kernels can make quite the performance difference. my hope is that as ics nears we can pull it with an unlocked bootloader from cheesecake. I am thinking of trying to make an app to automate the process even more. I sent phydo a PM asking if he would share the source code, so I can take a look at what he's done.
The other problem is we have so few devs for our phone. I'm not all that great myself and basically it is you, Jim, JRW28, and a few others. other phones have a ton of people working on stuff.

@lkrasner Well, technically don't we have an unlocked bootloader, or at least a bypass from kexec? From my understanding we just don't have a kernel to put on it yet.
@rdavisct Does the tablet have a capacitive touch screen or a resistive? I know a friend who bought a tablet that looked really good for the money (two cameras, 1.5Ghz processer, microSD expansion etc.) but he got really pissed of when he got it and discovered it had a resistive touch screen.

I know you said you don't feel like paying over 200, but you can get a used xoom off of ebay for very close to 200.
I have a xoom, the one with a 3g/4g radio, and I have hacked it and flashed it to work with an AT&T radio. I have been running ICS on mine for some time now, and I LOVE this thing! When I bought it in March last year, I liked it so, that is why I got the Atrix2.
The Xoom is just that bad assed, if you can spend just a small amount more you can get a used one. I just checked ebay and saw a bunch in about the 200ish range, that lowest was 211, but I am sure if you pay some attention you can snag one for a great price.
Or may be you can try HP touchpad

Hey guys. Just got the Infinity. Physically the device is great. Love it. Noticed after loading a couple of apps (not many) that the tablet seems a bit laggy going from program to program and screen to screen. And even some app crashes. Ran pretty smooth on initial use as they always do. It shouldn't be laggy at all with the specs. Could I have an app that's not written for a tablet causing a problem? Memory issue? Or anyway to check that this thing is running like it should? I would think it would be smooth as glass. Not overly concerned but just a bit. I've only had it for two days so just generating some dialog. I hate to jump to a "return it" attitude as the next one I get may have another issue or do the same thing.
Also it seems most programs aren't written yet to see the "microSD" card and treat the internal "scdard" as an external. Went through this with my Galaxy S3. Here we go again!
no lag on mines. i downloaded a couple of torrents last night and still was able to do other things without hiccups.

You're probably new to this forum?
This is a known I/O issue on this device. Everyone has it, one way or another.
Currently there are speculations that it is due to SW and not HW, so it will be fixed eventually.
Try turning off wi-fi or wait for some time for the tablet to settle down after heavy downloading and installing.
It should get better.
But, as soon as you are downloading something or copying and such ... and when you try to do other things in parallel ... the tablet will get laggy again.

Yes i am new to this device and this section of the forum. Thanks for the info. Glad to know it's probably SW and not hardware as this is frustrating. Is fast then bogs down quick. Maybe a custom ROM to fix this soon.

Tried the tablet the whole day with new apps, loading archives, extracted 600mb while watching youtube in HD, no problems yet. But I only have a few apps installed yet.
Only thing I saw is when the tablet switches from landscape to portrait, the wallpaper jumps from the left side to the right and gets then finally centered. A bit annoying.

Glad to hear (sorta) that it's happening to others as it denotes a software issue and not hardware. Hard to tell sometimes. I would certainly want to return it if there was a memory or CPU issue but obviously don't want to go through that hassle if I don't have to. Went up to BB today and they didn't have the Infinity but did have a Prime. The Prime was fast and I asked the salesguy (who claimed to know all about the tablets) to see if mine seemed laggy to him. He said it looked great but it also was not connected to wifi. It did seem to run faster without wifi. Starting to lead me to believe that the radio firmware is not perfected and when connected or connected to a poor wifi source it slows.
When I got my Galaxy S3 it was a little laggy even with a custom ROM until I connected in anther state to LTE and the phone was smooth as butter. Wifi performance does seem to affect the entire use of the phone/tablets quite a bit.

Maybe JB will fix some of this. It's supposed to be smooth. That is whenever we get it.
Prime users have been reporting big improvement with JB. Since ASUS likes to use the same NAND across all its tablets, it should help us out as well.

Thanks for the info. This gives me hope. Hey I'll be in SFO this weekend. Can't wait to stroll around downtown amongst the homeless and do some photography.
Mine was laggy as all get out for the first day. Especially while installing apps. Since then it seems to have settled in. Kinda like when you flash a new ROM and it takes a day or two before starting to act right. I was admittedly a bit concerned at first I've I've been on the edge of my seat awaiting for this device, but I'm really happy with it now.

This is good to know. Thanks. I did a hard reset and it helped a bit. Still laggy and the wireless is not stellar but as long as it's not the hardware I'm ok with it as JB is coming and custom ROMS. I do appreciate the feedback. Thanks. :good:
BTW: How are things in Fayette-nam? I used to fly in there a lot.

The hardware seems to be rock solid, JB or just some updates will likely iron out a vast majority of it's problems. Keep in mind we're all early adopters, these sorts of things are to be expected. Fayetteville is...well it's Fayetteville.

I've applied the scheduler change, most of the build.prop tweaks and the minfree modifications from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1758160
Overall it seems more responsive. The tcp buffer changes in build.prop helped a LOT with wifi performance. went from buffering streamed 720p movies to almost being able to handle a pretty high bitrate 1080p movie.

Hey guys,
Sorry but it seemed like this was the only way to figure something out. I've had my MT4GS for an year now and i've been trying on new roms since the day i got it. All in hopes that i would find one that actually works. I'm tired of all the Alphas and frankly i'm tired of them. It seems like everyone and their mother has an Alpha ROM out. I'm not making this up, maybe you guys have seen it too. A few weeks ago, someone released a ROM (Alpha) saying, the phone, the wifi, and the camera doesn't work. I was thinking, "why would you release this, what can the phone do with this ROM?"
Enough about my rants, these are the ROMs that i've actually used for a considerable amount of time and the problems.
Bulletproof- It had huge syncing problems and it would crash. (used it for 3 months)
Virtuous Inquisition- Crashed very often and the battery life wasn't as good, no trackpad support. (used it for 6 months)
Cyanogenmod 9 (Tried all Alphas)- Half the apps don't install from the market saying "its not supported on this device" (WTF??) (Used it for 3 weeks)
Virtuous Infinity- Loved it, not a big fan of sense but this was good but the connection kept dropping out, sometimes during calls. (used it for a week)
I got fed up and went back to Virtuous Inquisition. It was crashing but it was the most stable one that i've used so far.
all i'm looking for is one that has the basic functions and has a good battery life. I remember the days of CM7, where the battery lasted FOREVER. It doesn't have to be that good but as long as it is descent.
anyone have any recommendations?
What do you mean by crashing? I have used Bulletproof for over 6 months and it never crashes. It is the most stable rom I have found. Are you perhaps over or underclocked? That can cause issues. Also, there are lots of other threads that ask this same question, so why not post in one of those, instead of starting a new thread about the same topic that has been covered many many times.
Search function, maybe?
MikTouch
Just because it's labeled as an alpha doesn't mean it isn't. Some people just label it that so they don't have to deal with idiots when they complain.

Are you serious? Neither Amazon Appstore nor SlideME are equivalent to the google play store for number of apps. Meh.
I'm looking into getting a MYT4GS, since there seem to be no new phones that have a slide out keyboard, fast dual core processor and a screen with at least a 800x480 resolution.

Don't walk in and complain and then backpedal, saying that you were just looking for the best alpha. I'm not a developer, but I still think your thread post was a kick in the nuts.
You know what you're entitled to around here? Stock 2.3.4. That's it. Everything else is gravy. So sit down, open your wallet, and shut up.
There NEVER should be a rant about ROMs. NEVER. What sense is it to complain about gifts? Do you receive your Christmas presents and then proceed to take 30 minutes to complain about them?

I just have to say that the other app stores are not as good as play. It isn't about having the most apps. The apps from the Amazon store are not updated as frequently as the ones in the play store, and the developers are not getting paid properly, that is why the apps in the Amazon store are not as plentiful or maintained as frequently.

So, it is a big problem that has nothing to do with wanting the most apps. It is bad for the Devs.

Well, I still think that not having the play store is a big problem. I want everything that Android has to offer, I personally like having books, movies, t.v. shows, mags, and apps at my fingertips one of the major reasons why I own a smartphone. Telling someone to get an Iphone because they want everything the Play store has to offer isn't really constructive or very nice. I love all the roms that our devs have made for our phone, but I choose to use Bulletproof so that I can have everything working that came with this phone. People value different things in roms, I think it is not appropriate to put someone down because they want the market. I would love to run one of the ICS roms, but for now the best fit for me is a Gingerbread rom because everything is working.

OK. If you've:
a. had the MT4GS for a year,
b. are tired of all the "Alphas,"
c. are a developer,
...maybe you should make your own "Alpha." This place is called XDA Developers, not XDA whine-and-complain-about-alphas-and-say-I'm-a-developer-to-add-credibility-to-my-name. If actually ARE a developer, you should be ashamed of yourself for disparaging the work of the MT4GS devs.
You joined XDA to complain that xmc is trying to get stable Jelly Bean on our device? Seriously?
The MT4GS is one of the few dual-core phones that never received an official update to ICS. The devs here managed to get stable ICS on our device. They CHOOSE to share their work with you. You are entitled to nothing. You should know that. You are a developer, aren't you?
Actually, please don't answer that question. Nothing you say will change the fact that you joined XDA to complain about free stuff.

No, I haven't checked it out in a while. I was just referring to the issue of the Amazon and Slideme markets being suitable replacements for Google Play. Didn't you say in an earlier post "CM9. If you're that worried about Play, just download either the Amazon Appstore or SlideME." ? I am confused as to why they would be worried about Play if it is working?
I will give CM9 another look as soon as I have some time. Also for the record, I am very satisfied with the level of development for this phone, and have never complained about the choices of roms. I just took issue with the whole market replacement issue.

I'm sorry if it came off like that. I didn't join this to complain. I was simply asking if anyone has found any roms that they would recommend.
When i said i'm tired, i meant that there are 20+ roms just here at XDA, and I dont want to go through each one for a week only to find out it wont work and i need a new one. So i was asking for RECOMMENDATIONS!
I wasnt ranting at ppl. I know how hard it can be to make a ROM. The ppl at places like CM, Virtuous and other places work their butts off to do these releases. And to pay my respects, i download them and test them thoroughly and send them reports about un-reported bugs that they might have missed.
.
For example, on CM9, you can't download apps like "Android Online Radio" and "Cessna 172 Checklist FULL". They (CM) haven't mentioned the problem, so i reported it to them.
and when i said im a developer, i didnt mean i do ROMs (There are other things you can develop FYI)
now all that put aside, i was ranting about one guy, who had that "nothing working" alpha.
Let me try it again before ppl start yelling at me... I want some HELP with ROMs. Could someone RECOMMEND me a ROM that is stable.
for exapme. rorytmeadows(first post), and yellowjacket1981 actually recommended ROMs. Then it was just bash on the new guy...
and yellowjacket1981, mine cashed every time i tried to sync my dropbox or facebook. Gmail was the only thing that synced without crashing.

LOL! Once it's gone online, it's out there somewhere.
Sincerely though: sbdags and CROMI-X are not exactly hard to find in here, but I've had quite a few cases of minor threads that I lost sight of and subsequently could not find my way to again. It's great if you can have alternative routes available.
Oh, and sbdags/Darren: although I admire your dedication and handiwork on CROMI-X,which would make some people ask you to allow them to have your baby/babies, I presume the latter is a biological impossibility (and will remain so for some time to come unless my colleagues stumble onto something). That may be the better for both of us in several respects, one of them being the fact that I do not feel enticed to stalking you.
