If you all remember from the Windows Phone Summit, it was mentioned that all devices launced will have (receive updates) for a period of 18 months.
What does this mean brothers? Does it mean every WP device released will be neglected and won't be able to upgrade to another major OS update just like today's 1st and 2nd gen devices after 18 months.
What if we get quad core, NFC and all these hardcore hardware goodies? Will a phone with all the wonderful specs still be neglected? I really don't see how if the Kernels and cores are not changed.
Typical example: Will the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy III loose support for Android ONE DAY??? Even if the Android kernel and the cores still remain the same???
I'm really lost and need your opinions...any explanations?

I hope it does lose support after 18 months as that leaves the room for new innovation every 18 months which is fantastic if you as an end user want value for money! 18 months in gadget years is a long time. I would rather prefer new screen res, new processors, new add-ons to the hardware that can be exploited using an updated OS. However, yes if the OS can do all these by not changing kernel etc, we might potentially still be able to update to newer OS, but would you not want those hardware features that evolve in 18 months? I would!
18 Months is too short...
Think of how the latest gen phones got a front facing camera, yet we won't see Skype integration unless we upgrade to WP8...
What features will the 2nd gen of WP8 phones get that won't be used until WP9?
18 months is wayyyy too short... 36 would be a more fair number!

For example, they could exploit the possibility of x86 instead of ARM?
or hexa-cores?
or kinect sensors?
Now imagine if we could run the new kernel and MSFT would give WP8 to us right now, but we had same hardware, we wouldn't be seeing those NFC goodies on our current phones or those games that exploit multicores!

That would be idiotic. 3 years?
And considering that Android manufacturers abandon you before you've even bought it, 18 months is perfectly fine.

18 months is fine its the length of your contracts eligibility so essentially your phone will be supported until the next wave comes out.
18 months is perfect, means you can enjoy your latest update for a half year before your contract expires and you can renew it icm with a new phone.
Come to think of this, then someone like me need not buy a flagship phone. When WP8 comes out, they'll be low end, mid range and high end phones, since I don't play a lot of games on my phone and just use my social, forum and productivity apps, I really don't need to buy a WP GS3 or One X like WP which will no be supported in 18 months time. Both high end and low end WP 8 devices will not be supported in 18 months time then I better buy a cheap WP8 device when it comes out. Or am I wrong?

And also are they giving us 18 months support based on the expirations of contracts? If so then they are not being fair to some of us who buy phones off contract. You really need to use your phone like forever if you buy one coz they are damn expensive.

Why is this such a complicated concept?
It's 18 months from when the phone is released.
If you buy a year old phone, then that would be your problem.
Sent from my SGH-I777
Personally, I think it should be at least 24 months, in the US we all end up with 2 year contracts. Now if you buy the phone 3-4 months after it's release, who's fault is that ? Yours not Microsoft.
Now here's another good question that should effect US users. Does this 18 months start when the phone is released by the Carriers or the OEM ? Phones released in the US tend to get an overseas release before the US, sometimes as much as 6 months (GSM or CDMA).
How about the case of the Verizon Trophy or the Sprint Arrive, for example. The GSM Trophy was released about 8-9 months BEFORE the CDMA releases of the Arrive or the (few weeks later) Trophy. Yea, people say they are different phones but, MS could say, no a Trophy is a Trophy. Are you saying when I buy a CDMA phone (better coverage in the US now) my upgrades from Microsoft could only be 6-7 months on a just released phone, that I just signed a new 2 year contract on (sorry Lumia 900 owners) ?????????????????
All I know, when the WP8 devices start shipping, I will watch for the most popular one on here, and buy that one, because the XDA hackers will give me WP9, even if Microsoft does not
All its saying is Microsoft has to support them for AT LEAST 18 months. It doesn't mean they're necessarily going to abandon every 18 month old phone. All the contract says is that they are obliged to support us for 18 months. Who knows? We might even get windows phone 9 on or wp8 devices if they are compatible!
Knowing how Microsoft updates Windows and the XBOX, I would bet that you would get EVERY update including the major release, Unless your over 18 months after release (after 18months you will get all minor releases but, no more major updates).
As in the xbox, if your system requres a update, you can not access xbox live till you update. I'm sure MS would want everything standardized and on the same level if possable.
The question is what happens after the 18 moths are up? Will they stop releasing apps for it? Will they shut the market place down for Windows Phone 7.8 users like they did with Windows Mobile forcing everyone to go to Windows Phone 8?

They stop supporting your device(as for updates). I know that just because WP9 hits, your apps are not going to stop working or anything like that. It just means just like now, your going to get a minor update for Wp 7.5, and they will move on to WP8, all current apps will work fine and most of WP8 apps would work too (some games and big production apps could be an acception.)
As someone posted on another thread, a programmer today creating an app for WP8 would want to make it backwards compatable to 7.5/8 to reach the most people possable and reach higher sales amounts. If you just make a WP8 only app, you limit the people who can access your app. Just makes business cense...
Some apps will need the WP8 features and those you will not be able to run (high impact games will be the acception for the most part).

But if it is a port from Android, iOS or even a Windows 8 Metro App, it is way easier to port to WP8 than to WP7, and if WP8 sales are good, it might not be profitable to support the small marketshare that WP7 holds.
However, as of today your statement is of course true because there is not even a WP8 SDK.

Any new OS version WON'T have a bigger marketshare than that times ongoing OS.
e.g.
WP7.5 will have more than WP7.8 at its launch
WP7.8 will have more than WP8 at its launch
WP8 will have more than WP9 at its launch
etc.
So... even if WP8 sales are good since day 1, it will take at least 6-8 months to overtake that time's WP7.x userbase.
In the least effect, a W8 developer who ONLY ports to WP8 is losing potential 12 million customers - simple maths.

Im using 3GS right now and will either upgrade to a WP or IP4/5, I am sick of Android feeling like its still in a beta stage and freezing, closing apps, lagging no matter what phone. Anyway back when I used the focus the UI was amazing! But it was missing features...IOS is great! Time for some new features though imo, has WP7 been upgraded to more features? And how long will those updates last for the current WP's? What in your opinion is the best WP? And ultimatly what do you think is better? Hopefully Apple announces what IOS5 will be like. I really like WP7 but it felt like it needed time to get more features and some Apps were not optimized properly(ebay) but wow! That os is like butter! If it keeps getting features I may have to go WP! Especially if IOS5 is the same old, But for now I guess I gotta stay IOS.
maybe you should wait until fall or september, then both iphone 4s and major updates for WP7 are released, that time you can make a better comparison.which phone to buy...
The Fall Update to WP is a pretty big one, and new hardware will come out with it so I'd wait. The OS as it is, is to me the best designed out there, and the features people have been aching for are almost all coming with Mango (the fall OS update). Its going to be pretty nice, but ultimately up to you what you like most.
you've already pointed out that ios is complete and mature, try a friends phone around christmas and see if wp7 updates are all they're claimed to be...
the iPhone/iOS really is matured. You know where the saying comes from "There is an app for that".
I am still missing a lot of apps I was using on the iPhone, which are not (yet) available for WP7. But I really like the look of feel of WP7.
Wait for Mango if you like simplified device working more or less without any trouble
and you don't miss some basics. The UI is consistent and very easy.
For more sophisticated and better equipped device look somwhere else.

IMO the UI on Wp7 blows iOS out of the water. It's simple yet still highly functional. I keep making my older and less technical users go to WP7 devices. They all seem to love it and I see them on their phones all the time - I'm sure their productivity is tanking lol.
Ignorance is Bliss, as they say.
But I'd wait until Mango and IP5 is our and make a more informed decision.
Right now WP7 can't hold a candle to iOS, but the update will be big. Unfortunately it's months off so you'll have to use a phone that has 30+% less functionality than your 3GS and many showstoppers (and lack of Apps) if you upgrade NOW.
I'd wait.
Wait for iPhone4S/5 and WP7 Mango update, and then decide. You might look into Samsung Galaxy SII as well, it's very fast. Maybe more device coming out with Dualcore/Quadcore that improves Android. WP7 is still in beta stage imho.
I've been using wp7 since October when I replaced my 3gs, and I've missed nothing so far.and that's been very honest, the thing is all I use to use on the iPhone was Facebook eBay satnav n a few more apps so the 300k appstore didn't matter to me. You've gotta think about the features and apps u need. Upgrading to wp7 guarantee u mango update regardless of the handset you choose.
Wp7 Focus
wp7 for sure, the metro UI is amazing.

Functionality is more than coming:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084161
Marketplace is already pretty good considering dev's cant create certain apps yet (Mango SDK will have all the 1500+ API's available, many of which will be used to create these lacking apps).
If you are looking for heavy modification, it may not be the platform for you, but people will definitely be modding it. Just not the extent WM & Android users are probably used to.
I went with the iPhone4, Im still gonna wait and see how WP7 goes and see what Apple does with IOS5, then I can make my Dec with what I want, but Ive heard from a lot of news sources that WP7 is doing pretty bad in sales and that its really not catching on at all, hopefully it dosnt go the way of the Kin phones...
As some have already said, I would probably wait for the Mango update and iPhone 5 before making the decision. I got a WP7 and I really enjoy it, but I think to make a fair choice, you should wait to pick between the two.

They are doing it as quickly as possible. Its a major change at Nokia, it doesn't happen overnight. Nokia is planning for a late 2011 release of their first phone(s), and they are planning a whopping 12 devices (rumored so far) in 2012 running wp7 (including a dual core N8 version with a 12MP high optics camera). They will be using both qualcomm chips and SE dual core chips according to forbes.
http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwo...bes.com: Technology News)&utm_content=Twitter
There will also be some pretty nice second gen phones from Samsung, HTC, LG ect so people should have quite a few nice ones to choose from.

Thanks in advance
I think it's a good time to buy a wp7, mango comming out (soon) And new hardware hmmmmm I think there will be some phones with a qwerty keyboard but thats it no big hardware upgrades
better wait
IMO, it is better to wait until mango comes out and some more phones with better hardware. Though WP7 is good enough, it is still yet to get so many features. Being Mango the biggest update, we need to see how much level , does it take the OS. And regarding hardware, all WP phones are just as per minimum hardware requirements by MS and no phone yet which makes you say WOW.
I own focus now and i do like it.
Currently my plan is to wait until Mango and possibly any new phones and take the call b/w a WP7 and iPhone 5.

Will it support 3G in India? Nokia has plans for WP7 in India. I will say wait and see what they have to offer.
It is good to wait...most probably the new mango device will be come out during september or october,by ZTE....if you want go for nokia, you may have to wait until end of this year...
I'm pretty sure new devices will have a big difference with current devices, don't ever buy the device now, because they still using qualcomm 1st gen 1ghz snapdragon processor.
Furthermore, new devices most probably will be equipped with front facing camera,Gyroscope, better processor, better camera, higher ram, better screen and etc...so it is good to wait since it is not too long from now.
Don't choose the way like me,feel regret to be the first adopter of WP7,software flaws can be fixed...but hardware never...think twice
You can always wait my friend, there'll be always new better hardware.
but now, (at least here in europe) WP7 is an epic fail, and they are cleaning the stocks of WP7 phones. I got mine operator free (LG) for 199€ some months ago, it was more than 400€ worth, some had something like 640€ price (maybe due the 16gb storage). I wanted the Trophy for 149€, but it was actually out of stock.
Maybe they got remplaced by some new Android Galaxys clones.
If you wait until mango, maybe the prices will rise again (althoug I don't think so)
I read somewere that the WP7 operating system doesn't support dual core.
If its right, than I think there won't be better hardware until WP8 or Windows 8
If you buy right now a tegra phone, maybe you'll regret it, because news are coming, with 3DS-like screens, higher res displays, Windows 8 based phones and on and on...
You'll wait forever.
The only thing to do, is what I did, get a WP7 as cheap as possible, and hope that mango will bring some new features, and that our phone will be W8 upgradable...
yea, somehow agree with you...buy the phone as cheap as possible...because you might just want to try out the whole new OS,but it does not means it works perfectly for you.
Remember,is buy the phone at a cheap price,not sign a f**king cheap contract,never sign a contract.
If you want something last long,I reckon samsung galaxy s 2,its product life at least 1 or 2 years.Just like galaxy s
don't wait
buy an android I was once a windows mobile guy, android is better and there is more device to pick from. Microsoft mess up big time with this one.
thanks
Thanks everyone for your replies I think it makes sense to wait till September
What Im doing is getting a new contract and getting S 2 then im going to sell it when nokia releases their wp7 device and buy it pay as you go. I make actully make money if my contract is cheap. However I like to change my device every few months.
Saved me from asking the same question. My contract has just run out and I have switched to a sim only deal. Still very happy with my Hd2.
I so badly wanted the HD7 bu have now decided to wait until I see what happens over next few months Instead of getting bogged down with a long contract now.
are there no wp7 phones besides the trophy for verizon?
Not yet. They don't seem to care much about WP7. I'm more surprised that Sprint doesn't have any new ones, though.
Verizon, ha ha ha... They don't care for Windows Phones after the Kin incident; so they say. In my opinion MS should just drop Verizon period. I mean really I can't even get the update that keeps my Keyboard from disappearing because Verizon says that the update isn't significant enough but they turn around and release ever last Android update
Oh to be fair, they don't come anywhere near releasing every single Android update. My roommate's Droid - yes, the phone that Verizon marketed the hell out of - was one update behind when he put Cyanogen7 on it, and the official release is now two updates behind. It's only just reaching the end of the two-year contract though.
That's not to say they give a damn about WP7, because the evidence is pretty good that they don't, but they don't treat Android *that* much better. Screw 'em, the whole company sucks (I know, I tried them). Two years of their BS was 730 days too long.

You should know if you were a Android owner, your lucky to get 1 update to a newer version of software on any carrier, very few phones get 2-3 version upgrades. A 2 year old phone ? Good luck, after about 6 months your lucky to get anything.
It's one of the bigger problems with Android. Android is NOT Android if one person has 2.1 and the next person has 4.0 but, they are all called Android, right ?
If you have a Android device and you want to update it, Rooting it is the only way to go...because you wont get it from your carrer.
Some of the issues you don't have to deal with on WP7...
Hello guys
I have quite a dilemma right now. Im seriously thinking about buying Lumia 900 when it will be avalible in Europe. I Love the looks, love Nokia brand, love the Windows Phone..amazing phone BUT i was thinking. Since the Lumia 900 is only a single core phone (I dont care bout hw specs, since WP is working fast as hell) and the Windows 8 or Apollo ? is behind the door with the multi-core support im really worried about the update of the Lumia 900. What do you guys think ? Will the Lumia 900 get the Windows Apollo update or NOT ?
Its quite (HELL expensive) expensive phone i dont want to buy it and get it outdated in 6 months, with no chance of updating to amazing Apollo.
Your opinions ? Should i buy or should i wait ? :/
Thanks
Since nobody here works for Microsoft (however MS employees already signed a very strong NDA, so they are more silent than regular members ) nobody can tell you exactly how amazing Apollo will be, what handsets will receive that update etc. Only rumors and baseless assumptions.
Lumia 900 is a very good phone, so if you can afford it - buy it As for "outdated in 6 month" - it's just a current trend; manufacturers releasing new stuff every half a year; so it's not a WP specific problem. But you never be able to get a "lifetime" device; there is no such a thing.
I see no reason to suspect that current phones, especially gen2 phones, and particularly the gen2 flagship phone (Lumia 900) won't continue getting updates. This isn't Android, here. In fact, Microsoft have said they're requiring that phones be supported for some time. All current phone, including the gen 1.0 models (now 1.5 years old) are getting Tango. I wouldn't be worried.
Now, AT&T might try and screw you over with late updates and such... they have a well-deserved reputation for that kind of thing, and despite Microsoft's efforts they managed to delay some of the WP7 updates by months. Eventually, though, the updates still go out.

No srry man, some years back I've done the same thing for the Nexus 3 (Samsung Galaxy Nexus) because it wasn't getting a official Android KitKat update.
Google is such a big company... they don't care about just a petition. They have given us the promised support time, they owe us nothing.
The only thing we can do is keeping our fingers crossed and keep hoping this awesome phone will get just one more Android update.
BTW, with the ''same thing" I mean signing a petition, not creating one.

Everything has a limit. The petition will not help. If you want Android N, then install custom ROMs. Nexus 5 was released 3 years ago and it's old enough when it comes to technology. Just buy a new Nexus if you want an official Android update, or custom ROMs like I've said.
This is what irks me about the mindset of people and manufacturers these days..
Just because a device was released a little less than 3 years ago, doesn't mean it's ready for the scrapyard yet.
I haven't played with any of the current flagships but I don't feel the need because my Nexus 5 still runs just great for me. I don't notice any real slowdowns and to me it's just as good as the day I bought it so would should I have to upgrade ???
Case in point, take a look at Apple.. I have an ipad 2 that was released in early 2011. It's on iOS V9 and just reached it's end of life for support this month with the release or iOS 10... And I FULLY UNDERSTAND because it is truly starting to show it's age and run like molasses.
Additionally the Nexus 5 still outperforms most if not all of the newly released "mid range" phones and will probably continue to outperform most of them into next year.
Because carriers subsidize phones over 2 year contracts, a lot of people prefer to go that route and get new subsidized devices. That doesn't mean that people who spend their hard earned money on a device should be obligated to buy a new one to remain current. Outside of the Nexus world I realize this gets incrementally complex with the introduction of the Manufacturers and then the carriers but that's the whole point and allure of buying a Nexus to begin with.
As noted you will see updates continue with this phone for a long time to come via custom roms which will be proof enough to show this phone is more than capable of running the latest and greatest.
I'm disappointed that Google has decided to follow what appears to be a carrier life cycle for supporting their devices.

You have been lobotomized jk
N5 will work flawlessly under Android N. I have no doubt about that.
Luckily, we have custom ROMs but Google should support the Nexus devices for 5 years. Google complains about Android's fragmentation but they do participate by limiting their support. There's no (real) need to buy a new Nexus every 2/3 years.
"Just because a device was released a little less than 3 years ago, doesn't mean it's ready for the scrapyard yet."
This is not a mindset, it's reality and people has nothing to do but to accept it. Manufacturers keep on releasing new phones annually, even 2 phones every year.
If they don't scrap old devices, they can't sell and people won't buy the new devices. It's part of marketing. Of course Nexus 5 still performs great and I'm still using it right now running Marshmallow.
Android is different from iOS. Apple devices has longer support and there are only few iOS devices compare to Android devices. There are too many Android Manufacturers and it is still growing, even Google can't stop it. That's one of the reasons why Google limit and had to shorten its support to old devices.

I am not worried for the sole fact that the Nexus 5 community has done amazing things, this may become a good thing to entice further development knowing that there would be no more reasons to stay with the stock ROM. Knowing the Nexus 5 sales, it would be dumb for Google to not provide Android N for one of the most future proof devices I know of.
Don't care. Custom roms will do me just fine.
I thought Google were really supporting the Nexus line for 5 years, with 2 additional years for just security updates. I think they didn't care about users complaining for new versions.

5 years? IT would be awesome, if it would be 2 years would be awesome too. With custom roms i dont care about official updates. Nexus 5 is almost 3 years.
