2GB of RAM makes a huge difference - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I have a HOX and love it but also got a SGS3 today and man having the extra 1GB of memory really makes the phone fly since apps basically stay in RAM from boot so there's no loading and websites load smooth because there's room to expand. This screen shot is with all same apps installed and running as my HOX.
I wish I could add 1GB of RAM into the HOX. That's very important to me.

Nice! Hows the build quality on that thing? Is it really as bad as they say? Is it really as ugly as it looks? I wouldn't mind having 2GBs of ram. The build quality and the size concern me. Does it feel a lot bigger than your HOX?

It feels better in hand because its slimmer. The build quality is surprisingly good but not as good as HOX. The screen is much nicer than my Nexus but not as good as HOX. I guess it depends what you use your phone for but the 2GB of RAM is making it hard for me to go back to HOX. Apart from speed of apps because they're always in memory its amazing how you can hit home on something like this post, go play a few games, browse web, do a bunch of crap and when you come back its as you left it. It makes it a more fun experience for me personally.
I just got the phone today so haven't decided whether to keep it or not but will take a week to compare with HOX before deciding.

The extra RAM on the S3 is really the only thing about it that appeals to me, but it just isn't enough to justify giving up a great phone like the One X. I think we'll have less issues with RAM once we're able to modify the kernel source, but even if that never happens, I'm satisfied with this phone's performance.
Remember: software can always be optimized, but hardware can never be changed. I'm not trading the One X's ridiculously good LCD screen for an AMOLED, regardless of how much RAM they stick in the S3.

Actually RAM does matter. Just as the OP said, apps can remain alive longer without having to close. 2GB is the next step and I'm already starting to get jealous.

I'm curious how battery life compares to the One X, too. Does keeping all of those applications constantly in memory take a hit to battery life?

No because they become cached and go to sleep which uses 0 CPU. For properly coded apps anyway...

That is correct a PC would be better with more RAM but you need to understand that Android doesn't work that way.

No one said 2gb of RAM was bad.
It just isn't necessary. For myself, I enjoy the HOX much better. And yes, I've held a SGSIII before.
The HOX just feels better to me.
But again, to each, his own.

More RAM doesn't affect over all performance though, it might be important if you need to multitask with 20 different apps or games.

Yes its true. Android is extremely good at managing memory in the background and functions better keeping the RAM loaded with apps.
With that said. The more available RAM you have for use, the better. I don't see why this concept is so hard for some people to grasp. The more apps that can remain in memory, the better. If this wasn't the case then the phones would ship with 100mb of ram........

I am a newbie with regard to how Android handles ram but you are only using 511 MB of the 2 GB of ram. How does that make a huge difference? If I had a HTC One X and it was using 511 MB of the 1 GB of ram. Wouldn't they be doing the same thing since both still have free ram?
I would think if you had a picture showing 1.5GB of the 2GB of ram being use, than that would be the case that the 1 GB is not enough on the HTC One X or any other phone for that matter.

Wrong again, it does because the apps remain cached in memory so the next time you go to them they load instantly. Otherwise they'd have to be loaded from storage which is slower.
Like I said I prefer the HOX in many aspects but it really needs more memory or less bloat really be the best. It always seems each phone is missing something. Sucks.

And this is exactly what its function is. The guy with 2gb will go to access an app that was never shut down, therefore his app will open faster than the guy with 1 gb of ram. Not only that but the app will be in the exact state he left it. It opens faster, therefore it has better performance...

[Q] amount of RAM

This is a sweet phone and I would really like to get one.
However, I am not sure if 768M RAM is enough...... not talking about those score run
how do you guys feel about it?
any lag? any problem? any unhappy experiences because of lack of RAM?
Thanks in adv and sorry for my poor eng.
First off this phone does not have 768 of ram. I think the Thunderbolt and myTouch 4g are the only two phones with that amount. I could be wrong. This phone has 512 of ram and it does a good job of multitasking. The 2 issues I notice is browser lag on flash websites and the wifi does'nt seen to be that fast as previous phones I've tested. This isn't a bad phone. YouTube it and watch reviews and see if its the right phone for you.

Does it feel like a Dual-Core phone?

I'll be getting a Sensation later today but I'm wondering, does it feel like a dual-core phone? Does it feel fast in applications, web browsing, and day to day usage? Some reviewers say it doesn't which is kind of sad considering all the horsepower this thing has.

SGS II may feel faster due to hardware acceleration (Edit: for web browsing) and its simple and stock-looking environment (not too many nice animations on touchwiz 4).
Sense 3 is a pretty heavy environment, with rich graphics and animations. Still, all animations are ultra-smooth and environment or web browsing is pretty fast to me, (comparing it with my previous single core galaxy s.)
Still, SGS II may feel faster, but the 4.3" qHD screen and Sense 3 are some big advantages of sensation that made me go for it. anyway, extremely happy with my purchase.
Edit: did i mention the look and feel of the device? I love it
Hope this helps
Does it feel faster than my Nexus One? Yes.
Does it feel twice as fast as my Nexus One? Not even close.
I can't wait to see how this baby runs on without the heavy Sense UI.
Hey arcadia. Once you start using it you will notice how fast it is. And for it to be running resource hog sense then yes it does . Just install a stock android launcher. Then you will see what I'm taking about.

I've only had this phone for one day, I think this is the fasted android device I've ever used. The UI is butter smooth despite the Sense overlay and with only 170 mb of free ram.
I'm still shocked that it takes less than 10 seconds to power on!

Only 170mb of free RAM? How is that possible? Do you have a lot of stuff running in the back ground? That kind of scares me because I might be giving my G2X to my wife and getting this phone but the G2X has less RAM than the Sensation but my G2X has 242mb of free RAM.
I think that is because the g2x doesn't have sense 3.0. Once you switch to another launcher and/or once we get a root and start getting custom ROMs, I think we'll see increase RAM available for the users.

Nope, Gingerbread does not but Honeycomb does and Ice Cream Sandwich will. Also he is wrong. The SGSII is not hardware accelerated. Only the browser on it is which makes it pretty quick. The UI isn't accelerated though.

Will the task manager show 150 to 170 mb of ram free out of 558 mb when the phone is powered on. I don't have many widgets running on different screens. I think this is because the phone is shipped with 768mb of ram instead of 1Gb, and Sense is very ram intensive.
BUT, so far I’ve not ran into any slowdowns due to lack of ram, I’ve pushed the phone quite heavily since I got it. I was downloading video podcasts, market apps, browsing multiple websites and listing to music at the same time. I didn’t notice any slowdown or lag when switching between apps.
This phone is about 1/3 faster than an overclocked Galaxy tab running custom Gingerbread ROM, and much smoother than a stock Honeycomb on 3.01.
I played with the SGII, but I prefer the form factor of the Sensation, the curved back make the phone much easier to handle.
P.S. Attached a photo to show the amount of available ram after a fresh reboot. I'm not complaining as I've not encountered a low ram situation. I've set the phone to notify me if the free ram drops to less the 40 mb, so far no warning yet.
Never mind, the phone shows 315mb free and 180 mb used in running services under applications setting. Sorry for the confusion, don't trust what the task manager is reporting.

You are thinking of internal storage. All variants of the Sensation have 1 GB of internal memory and 768 MB of RAM.
To the people complaining that they only have 150 MB of available RAM = That is how Android works. It loads as much as deemed necessary into RAM to speed up launching of applications. If you consider this approach, more RAM available = less applications ready to go = slower phone.

What do you guys think about the Atrix 2? In my opinion its worse than the Atrix 4G
1500 mAh battery vs the 1930 mAh in the Atrix 4G
4.3 inch qHD vs the 4.0 inch qHD that the Atrix 4G has, I think its worse because it will be more pixelated...
Worse GPU...
Same CPU.....
The only thing that's better is the camera...

Atrix 2 NOOBS???
I know all my specs, I know all about the pros and cons... i know how to use other peoples mods... I'm not gonna tweak or assume someone is holding out, like others, because i'm not developing... I will Say I'm addicted and can't wait to root, mod kernel, and get a different rom going on this thing... i do love it but here are a few things i would love to see...
Root
Tegra Games (huge)
Webtop hack
Kernel (like faux's)
Maybe a new ROM
Honestly this phone is great, except for the fact that when i compared bench's to a stock sgsII I was annihilated...
Kudo's to the guys who do all this hard work (I know I couldn't do it)... Also Thanks for the guides for NOOBS!!! (Little more advanced here, clearly nowhere compared to some of you all)
To all the other noobs, quit freaking out you didn't develop anything... gotta appreciate the folks that do...

OP, ive had both. Id take the atrix 2 all day.
Phone has no blur. Much quicker.
Phone is thinner
Screen is larger, pentile is gone, looks brighter / more like a SMOLED.
Camera is much better. Theres an actual camera button.
I for one, hated the position of the on / off / fingerprint scanner (never worked for me anyway). like the new one much better.
battery is better for me. I like the rubber back much better. wont get worn and shiny and quick.
Despite having the same ram / proc specs, it has a better shot of getting ice cream sandwich.

I am not going to argue about the rest as they are your personal preference and I respect that.
But better shot at getting ICS? Now why on earth would you say this considering that moto has only planned for ICS updates for phones on Verizon and has totally left out both Atrixes.
If you are referring to processor, then I would like to point out that the Xoom tablet has a Tegra 2 processor and Moto said it will get ICS.
I would like to see your reasoning behind this.

And don't forget 23 gb free storage on dropbox, I would rather have all that back up space for all my photos then a removable SD card.

GS3 is an Awful looking phone, the mockups looked sexy, ah well. dont care about SD Card, unless you get a class 10 you will knacker you performance. Sammy are offering 50gb dropbox, but do you needthat much for your phone.. Really.
TouchWiz has a few new bits but still looks like a bear's arse. Also why just 1gb ram, where is the rumoured 2gb?
They had a chance to make it stand out from all the other Galaxys, they failed. HTC One X may have a few software bugs atm but i am well and truly sticking with HTC. I have had a Galaxy S2 and Nexus and actually missed HTC
although s3 seems better but it cant match htc one x build quality. did u guys see loudspeaker. its looks crap ewwwwww. Nice that i didnt wait and bought one x otherwise today i would have bought one x really one x is overall consumer device. s3 is a geeks dream who care about specs and rooting custom roms till core. as i can see both devices are top notch with each having pro and cons but afterall htc build quality can hardly be questioned. i would go for one x on one x vs s3. sgs3 better lhck next tym

I am glad I didn't wait. Not being a fan boy or anything, but the phone looks ugly compared to the OneX, even the back of he S3 looks ugly. Touchwiz is also ugly compared to Sense.
There will be the people that will go with it because they "need" the extra battery, or SD Card. Neither bothered me as I have a portable battery anyway.
I dont doubt that it will be quicker than the OneX on benchmark tests, the camera might even be better (although it only does 25 snaps compared to our 99 ) but it has Touchwiz and it looks fugly!
SGS3 in a word : Ugly

Multitasking on the 1GB RAM SGS3 sucks. How are things with the 2GB version?

Hey there
So I recently got and i9300 and am loving it so far - except it sucks at multitasking big time. when I open around 3 or 4 apps, switching between them will inevitably make them reload.
It's not possible to open the browser, a game, whatsapp and then reading your emails without the browser complety reloading the page you have been viewing or the game starting from scratch when switching to either one from the recent apps list.
This blows and is super annoying because when I play a game, then pause it to text someone, go look up a site in the browser and maybe watch a youtube video, the game is closed in the background so that when I switch back to it, it completly restarts the whole thing (losing all my unsaved progress). Mind you this is only 4 apps. Same thing happens if the app is suspended for more than 15min or so, it just gets closed. Oh even nicer, it also happens when I play a game and get a call. After finishing the call and returning to the game, it's restarting -_-
Seeing how the free ram is always around 100-200mb, I assume the situtation should be dramatically better on the 2GB version. People keep saying 1GB is plenty enough but it simply isn't if you do more than texting and listening to music on your device. Even google acknowledged this by bumping the Ram up to 2GB on the Nexus 4 (which is supposed to be the reference for future androidphones btw)
What are your experiences with the 2GB model? What is the limit of things you can do before stuff gets closed?
With my 2 Gb model I normally have over 1 Gb of free memory and I do a lot of multitasking. I'm usually using 700-900 megs out of the 2 gigs. I've never had things be auto closed on me.
Sorry to hear that about your phone =/

Agreed. My g/f has the Razr M and it's essentially what the OP has yet a smaller screen, obviously. The difference in ram is very noticeable in my opinion. Home screen scrolling produces slight lag on her M on the Jellybean update from Moto. It's interesting to note that Moto's newest Jellybean OTA is almost AOSP'ish and only 254mb in size. ICS and Jellybean Touchwiz is 600+ mb in size and pushing a much larger screen. My S3 experiences no lag and no multi-tasking problems which I can't help but chalk up to the 2gb of RAM vs the 1gb on the M and i9300 S3.
Just what I thought. It doesn't take a genius to figure 1gb ram is a bottleneck when it is always almost completly filled.
I still don't get the vast majority of people out there preaching how 1gb ram is more than enough for andorid when it simply isn't. Be lucky with our S3'guys, I'd take the additional gigabyte of ram over a quadcore cpu any day.

This is what i said before the device was even relased and got bashed...on aosp 1gb might be ok, but touchwiz needs 2gb bare minimum.

I know the feeling, buddy.
I've always found RAM to be the largest bottleneck on my previous Android devices. Having said that, have you thoroughly investigated to make sure RAM is your issue?

Vipeout, you bought the wrong phone bro.
The i9305 has 2GB, LTE, Exynos, and global GSM.
The i535 has 2GB, LTE, Snapdragon, global GSM, and global CDMA.

Yeah, the RAM is totally crippling the phone. It's not an issue when u run a single app, it has enough to run any app/game.
But as soon as you leave the app and start something else, the first app will be closed by the time you switch back to it.
Happens all the time with "Bad piggies" for me. I play, go out to look something up on the web, maybe look up a walkthrough vid on youtube, and upon switching back to the game I am greeted with the startup screen. Sucks so much I really want to throw the phone out the window.

Neither of those is available from my provider. Actually, the i9305 currently is being sold by only one shop and without contact.
Only thing I could do is sell my i9300 and get the 2gb variant without contract. This is a bad move though since the next galaxy probably will be released in half a year. Still, this multitasking issues are becoming unbearable. My old iphone 3gs could simply suspend any app and resume when going back to it, no matter how many other apps were open. Oh the irony...

I'm seriously over the rediculous limitations of 1GB of RAM.
Basically if I open chrome on my S3 and switch between two tabs.. everything else gets memory managed, including touchwiz so even pressing the home button takes several seconds for the live wallpaper, then icons, then widgets to load up again. Forget having any other apps remain in memory, that just doesn't happen.
Whoever put 1GB of RAM in this phone should be slapped (repeatedly). It doesn't work properly. This is supposed to be a flagship phone. I would have paid a little extra to actually have a phone that can switch between applications without things getting closed all the time. I waited for and bought the more expensive 32GB version so that I would not have to worry about filling internal memory. Ironic that I'm still frustrated by limited memory, but in a different way. It's little wonder countries with later releases of the original S3 got 2GB (eg Japan).

it would be nice to have both a quad-core and 2GB of ram but looking at it now im glad it has the extra GB where as the quad-core is barely any different then the S4 in terms of performance
Benchmarks thoroughly disagree with that statement.
Mali 400 GPU (Exynos) > Adreno 225 GPU (S4)
90 FPS in glbench vs 60 FPS isn't even a contest
Is it normal that mine says 1.56 in the task manager under Ram?

Benchmarks dont mean dog dookie...i doubt there is a noticeable difference for the average user. Yes all the gaming buffs will appreciate the quad core but other than that ram is much more important.

Yes roughly 400mb is dedicated to the rom.
Thanks a lot. Since I've gotten S3 I've done do much to it that I thought I might of screwed it up. Lol

The i9305 has both.
2g of ram is the new standard, and the reason I wanted to upgrade to this phone.
My next phone will have more than 2g of ram, and I'm sure the gs3 will be more than capable of anything I do until that time comes.
Here's a screen capture of my ram atm

Have you tried clean rom or other smaller roms with around 200-300 mb . I've noticed most tw roms are around 600-700mb which would basically use up more than half of the 1gb phones.
Loving my 2gb phone
