Does anybody else have the problem, that if they use an app, and then press the home button, the launcher shows up, but with no icons, no widgets, and it takes about a 5-10 seconds before everything appears, and it takes another 5seconds and then the apps in the menu appear. I mainly notice it after using memory heavy apps like chrome,or flipboard, but it sometimes happens randomly. I don't have many widgets, it's a stock 4.04 rooted, mostly I have only 3-4 services running. Any advice?
It's because you used memory intensive app that will take up all the available ram and cause the launcher to redraw(restart). There's no fix for it since Nexus S only has 512MB of Ram. Or you can flash bigmem kernel which adds more usable ram.

thx,yes that's what I was thinking. I only wondered, because I saw no one complaining about it, and I think it's very annoying!
Install apex launcher, it gives you the option to force the launcher to stay in the memory.
Beware though, you may get some bad performance if you do this...forcing apps in memory is never a good idea.
Install an alternative launcher, apex and nova launcher are the best.
If it lags apex launcher, burning the phone :good:

No problems here with keeping Apex in memory. No redraws and no lag. ICS can handle these things well.

The gaming performance is sacrificed with keeping it in memory. It wont make much of a difference with other normal usage of the phone.
Thx for your answers. I think I'll might try another launcher then.

I just installed the latest leak.. KH2 .. I normally used an app killer(rechild's) with my last froyo rom... is it necessary in GB? I just did the ext4 and installed the leaked KH2... can't believe how fast it is now.. it's like a new phone!
EDIT: Used to use the task killer, but not anymore. Refer to post #4.
You should google this but task killers are bad for froyo and GB
Just an update on using task killers. I've been getting random shutdowns whenever I used my task killer, so I've recently completely stopped using it on GB. I've always used it on Froyo, but if I were to ever go back, I won't be using it either.
I'm proud to report that my phone is no longer shutting down! It's been two days so far, and I've gone without shutting down. I normally have reboot at least twice a day.
After some reading, I've realized that task killers are actually useless to Android, since it's Linux based, not Windows. After using an app, Android caches the process, which uses up the memory in case if you open it up again. However, if you leave it alone for a while, Android will end the task. Whenever it needs to use more memory, it'll free it up by ending any tasks that are not being used.
I used to not believe that, since I would notice a big difference whenever I cleared RAM on Froyo. However, now that I'm on GB, I really see no difference.
To sum it all up: Task killers = no!
I agree. Don't use task killers. Will only cause problems, especially on custom roms, which are already tweaked

Back when I was using my Huawei U8100 I used task killers frequently.
But now with my SGS 4G I never use it, there is just so much memory in the device. Samsung included a Task Manager, but I never use it.
Its odd im hearing how bad task killers are ive used it the whole time and have never had an issue with it or any custom roms...possibly luck of the draw

No point in using task killers
Task killers main goal is to close un-used/un-wanted apps or programs
What if the app/program needs to stay open?
Well running gb fixes all that! O_O
Running gb uses less ram
Background apps/programs stay running but doesnt waste battery life nor ram
All in all gb clears up all the unnecessary clutter that 1.5 -2.3 versions had
Hope that sums it up =)

Eh, I wouldn't say GB uses less RAM, cause it only leaves me with 80 MB RAM most of the time. Whenever I run games, my launcher mostly has to close because the games use too much RAM. I've set it to system persistent, and it still doesn't work. I guess the launcher is the only thing that could be killed? *shrug*
Also, your picture is VERY cute, haha. Nu kitty ftw!
Honestly this never happened on Froyo, it started after upgrading to GB(been on the leaks since EP3). Go Launcher just keeeeeeeeeps restarting EVERY time i open ANY app. Go SMS, PowerAMP, calculator, whatever... i press home and all my home pages need to reload(app drawer too). This wouldnt be a huge problem but when the launcher crashes it makes whatever app im using slow to a CRAWL. Poweramp starts making my music skip, if im using my keyboard(Swiftkey x) then that becomes pretty much unusable. SO SLOW.
Anyone know why this is happening?
just for reference im running tweakstock1.0 + imnuts' infinity kernel + ICS fugu tweaks. no supercharger or loopy smoothness right now.

no problems here, and I almost exclusively use Go Launcher... I'm tempted to say its the fugu stuff but thats only because of my skepticism of such "tweaks"
are you using anything different? im thinking its a kernel problem(imnuts makes great kernels dont get me wrng, i mean i was using his for months before imoseyon came along). I also have my suspicions that its the fact that im not using V6 supercharger... IDK. it feels like when the phone runs out of RAM the launcher just closes, which it shouldnt since ive got that persistent memory thing checked in the preferences.
those are just my guesses since weve clearly eliminated the GB incompatibility.

just 12/11 Infinity with TSM and Imoseyons 4.0.0 kernel, no extra anything... the only issue I've noticed is like one hotboot a week but I think thats my fault since it happens when I overload the phone with too many things at once

its so weird too because rebooting fixes the problem for a while, hours even, but im lazy and dont like rebooting my phone all the time because media scanning takes a year. ill try switching kernels tomorrow. if that doesnt work then i guess ill try v6 and loopy smoothness. if that doesnt fix it then its back to the drawing board.
BTW, are you using voodoo screen tuning by chance? i always kinda had a feeling that it was causing the problems.
Android is shutting GoLauncher down to free up memory. There is a setting in GoLauncher to mark it as 'system persistent', but i'm not sure that always works.
On DroidForums I found this, which has worked well for me:
In Terminal Emulator type: su
Then type: echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop
Now reboot into recovery and clear your cache only and then boot up
I always had launcher redraws on FroYo and rarely on GB. But to fix this you can use v6 supercharger and apply hard to kill launcher.

Same here, i switched to GO after having insane restart issues with ADW and go was working perfect. I applied V6 and it seems to have stopped the issue and im finally able to have a functional phone but it might have just been due to the fact that i rebooted the phone after applying the supercharger, because it was lagging like crazy before i rebooted.
We'll see soon enough...
I have found that on infinity just having the tw4 apk causes me issues. Not only replacing the launcher with adw ex but I also deleted the touchwiz launcher from /system/app.
Seems odd but I hated the newest infinity until I did that and now its faster and smoother than any other rom I ran yet. Dont know much about the tweak rom but could be worth a shot if it's there.

Another vote for freezing/removing TW4 launcher. My phone has run better since I froze the TW launcher.

Two things: one, putting lots of apps on SD has been known to cause redraws. If you move apps back to the phone, particularly ones that you have home screen shortcuts for, that generally helps a lot. Keep in mind that some apps install to SD by default, and even if you didn't move them there yourself you can move them back.
Second: the "persistent" checkbox doesn't reliably work in Gingerbread due to Android task manager changes. The Charge's unfortunately paltry amount of RAM is the biggest issue and there's not a whole lot you can do about that. You can only try to reduce the number of apps installed that run in the background without reason and force the task manager to start closing stuff. Get an app like Watchdog from the Market, and check to see what's running right after a reboot. You'll probably be surprised at some of the apps that do without any good reason.
Ever since I upgraded to ICS, RAM consumption is high in my atrix2. It used to have free RAM around 300 to 350 MB but now in ICS the fee RAM is always around 150 to 200 MB.
I am having same apps which I used to have on GB. Nothing changed on my phone. Can anybody advice me whats wrong with my phone?
Ex. Games like Temple Run are little bit sluggish in ICS whereas it was running smoothly in GB even though I had some apps in the background. Now in ICS it is sluggish even though there no other apps running in the background.

Android has its own task manager, which is quite sufficient. What people don't seem to understand about RAM, is that it is meant to be used, not the other way around. Android, like Mac OS and Ubuntu, wants to use all the RAM it can, because that's how it was designed to work. There are settings (in Android we call them "minfree" settings) to tell the system how much RAM to leave free and available, but the rest is designed to fill up as fast as possible and stay that way.
Android can manage memory rather well (and the settings are still there to tweak if you just have to touch stuff) and having up to 300 percent more RAM makes a huge difference. There will be a few times where killing off a handful of tasks will speed things up, but overall you'll get the best performance out of your phone or tablet if you stop worrying about it and let Android be Android. If you need to live on the edge (and I know a lot of you guys do) root and hack your phone with some amazing custom ROM that has everything tweaked and allows you to travel forward in time -- I'm right there with ya, 'cause it's fun as hell.
But don't worry about how many apps are running on your phone, or about using widgets that tell you these things, because it just doesn't matter anymore.

Long press home button, it will appear. Swipe to close apps.
Try with debugging mode enabled along with force GPU rendering from settings...
Task managers/killers are completely useless in android. The only use of task killers is when a rogue app keeps running in background consuming lots of CPU cycles.
After the ics update my phone too was a bit slow but then I factory reset it & then wiped the cache partition. I don't know what did the trick but it works great now.

Go to development, background applications, at most 4.
This way lag will stop.

Im not really sure if this is against the forum rules or not and if it is, im sorry and you can lock it. But what rom has the most ammount of free ram, i keep flashing roms and they usually have the same ammount, but maybe its just me because i always flash sense roms since i love the sense camera. Any ideas or suggestions? The main reason im looking for the most ammount of ram is i always use alot of background applications like LWP, a different launcher, weather bug, airdroid, and etc and my phone starts to bog down eventually and its quite annoying when need to reply to an email fast from my phone and the lag between the current app im in to the home screen then into the launcher and then into the app makes me want to murder my phone.

What rom do you use?
The amount of free ram available will have little to do with the performance of the rom. Typically aosp roms will have more ram available due to the lack of sense.

I assumed it was the RAM because i flashed Elemental X and overclocked it a littler and it didnt have any performance increase at all.. maybe its just my phone haha.
You could try CyanogenMod 10, it has much better multitasking then any Sense ROM, since it's a pure aosp Rom, in theory any other Aosp Roms should have more Ram available because Sense tends to bog things down with all of it's extra features and background processes that use up Ram.
So use a AOSP Rom if you want better multitasking and less things to reload or refresh.
I got my n5 a month and a half ago, and have noticed that it almost always has to reload the launcher, and when I play any high memory games (asphalt, gangstar ect.) My music app is killed. I'm surprise by this as my nexus 4 never had these issues. I also only have 400-500mg avalible ram sometimes less, and on my nexus 4, I usually had 1-1.2gb
I'm curious as to what the best solutions for this are? I have used a few kernels (elementalX, faux, Franco) and all have had problems keeping apps in memory.
Thanks, and sorry if this has been asked before.

Do you have any app that can change Rom/kernel settings Like faux clock, Rom toolbox, trickster mod.. etc?
The workaround for your memory issue is lowering the values on OOM settings. Any of those apps can edit those values.

its sounds like its something on your end that might be eating your ram. btw, have you checked how much ram you have left at any point? if so, whats the number? are you using any flashable mods? do you have lots of activity enabled? this might be the first time ive read of a nexus 5 with ram issues! or maybe its not? in the phones main settings, developer options, do you have it selected to kill apps after a few are opened?
Just as an FYI, I reflashed the stock ROM, then flashed elementalX Kernel again and my ram use seems better, I just still have the issue when playing gangstar 4 or asphalt 8 where if I close the app (go to home screen) and go back into the app it has to reload.

I wouldn't really worry about RAM, post 4.4 Ram really ins't a problem. It is most likely a placebo if you see a degradation in performance .If you are really worried about RAM check your RAM usage in apps and maybe post some screen shots if anything is out of the normal.
