any good android tablets?

hi i had the ipad and iphone and didnt like it quite that much so i got a htc evo and love it , looking around i havent found any good tablets, is there any good android tablets from a respectable brand

I hear great things about Archos. Of course, you're probably not going to find anything as large as the iPad. If you're looking for something like that - stop. If you're looking for something that's actually productive and you can actually carry around (seriously who holds an 800 dollar piece of equipment like that on a moped?) than Android is surely the way to go.
However, you'll probably get better results reading reviews, though. Here you may get one or two responses for a few different tablets. Clearly not enough to build an opinion on. I say I -HEAR- Archos is a good tablet while others might say the opposite. However, it's one to look into

yea. i tired of the restrictions apple makes on their users. only thing i wish is android had more apps. (thats y i keep an itouch for that )

I am waiting to see what the new HP one is like they are keeping it very quiet but it has its own operating sys and roamers are since they acquired palm its something to do with that

I picked up the archose 5 IT 32G android when I saw it in honk kong few months ago. Well, i have to say- it did replace my EEEPC netbook, and while it only goes 1.6, after you get the android4archos.apk to open up the android market, it is pretty decent. No camera, no phone. Using sirius online app, all the google stuff, and awaiting the kindle app from amz.

Is anyone else thinking about actually USING WebOS?

I am really starting to like WebOS a lot and since we know it is the tablets and not the OS that were scrapped, I have to wonder about a possible groundswell of new development for the native operating system.
I am not quite as excited as most about getting FroYo on this thing, I actually think it may be a downgrade, performance-wise. GingerBread struck me as slightly different than FroYo, but Honeycomb is sweet. I also have a Viewsonic Gtablet running the FlashBack Honeycomb ROM and it is pretty damn nice, but I find WebOS to be a little more elegant and refined feeling. Especially after installing PreWare and adding the performance patches and stuff.
I am not a developer, but there are a lot of them around here and quite a few of them either already got or will get a touchpad to play with. I am hoping that some of them will be impressed enough (or intrigued enough) to look at the WebOS SDK and PDK.
Since there are already drivers for full functionality within WebOS, I would think it would not be too arduous for some of these intrepid devs to port a few of the popular apps over for those sticking with it. There is also a web-based widget builder called Project Ares that looks interesting.
Anybody else? Bueller?

Webos is probably my favorite tablet os now. The problem is there's no Apps for it. I bought the touchpad for my girlfriend yesterday and she said she loved it but after 10 minutes of just checking facebook and some websites she was like, ok what now?
They need more games optimized for it and better prices

i'm kind of torn about using android on my TP.
i quite like the way webOS works.
i honestly can't understand why HP gave up on this thing. it's brilliant.
sure it's a little slow out of the box, but so was my HTC magic. a new rom fixed that.
it has fantastic support from the preware community.
i'm loving gestures and cards.
a 3G modem would've been nice (or a usb port to allow a dongle), but again not a big deal given that most phones these days can do wireless hotspot and 99.9% of the time if i have my tablet, i also have my phone. therefore it's always able to connect.
i'll admit the build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but for a first up effort it's pretty good.
the touchstone dock is brilliant.
i'm tempted to buy a second one so i'll have one at home and one at work.
i love android. (i'm somewhat of a fanboy)
i recommend it to friends all of the time. but after experiencing webOS i'm starting to wonder why.
EDIT: maybe HP will sell or licence webOS off to google and we can get the best of both worlds?

Since WebOS was released on the Pre few years ago I always wanted to try this OS as I mostly heard good comments about it and it looked good.
I must say that WebOS on a tablet is WOW! I love it.
I really hope new apps will be developed and that I will be able to continue to use WebOS.
I like my Android phone, but I would be happy continuing having a WebOS tablet.

I have heard that the HP Touchpad has a 3G and 4G wan aready on the chip and just waiting for software to activate. Just like the Nook color bluetooth that it never came with but was activated within Gingerbread.

I've always been interested in webOS ever playing witha mates palm pre. The cheap touchpads seemed like a great way of getting a webOS device.
I don't understand why people want to remove webOS, however I can understand trying to port android apps to it.
I'm still waiting delivery of my touchpad, cant wait to get playing around with it.

I bought for two reasons, price and Android. For $149 you cant go wrong, I thought of buying more to try and sell for a small profit but decided against it. My local Arrons had one in their store, but had access to 6 more WebOS looks cool, but I am not familiar with it at all. I really dont care to learn it being WebOS is done. If worse comes to worse and only the Android market/APPS will work on it then I will be happy Heck, who am I kidding, at such a low price I am happy no matter what!

The point is, WebOS is not "done." In fact, it sounds like HP is planning to put a lot more into it.

Yep, WebOS development will continue.
I really don't understand the cry for Android either. Froyo is not that amazing, Gingerbread isn't that great either. Heck, I have owned quite a few Honeycomb tablets (Xoom, rooted Nook Color, Dell Streak 7) and none of them impressed me.
I get that people here overwhelmingly like Android. But the only merit I can see for putting Android on this guy is for the apps. And, lets be honest, anything besides Android 3.X isn't even optimized for a large display like the touchpad. The Gmail application for example is just a giant list of emails. The WebOS email interface is leagues ahead because it actually takes advantage of the screen size by layering slide-panels instead of just being a giant list of messages!
WebOS is an awesome operating system. The only things holding it back to this point have been total garbage hardware (the Pre was trash) and a lack of developer interest. With HP pushing out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of these tablets in days, its safe to say that development will speed up on the WebOS front. Applications will start to trickle in faster, and things will improve.
The desire to have Android, yet alone a non 3.0 Android, on this thing just seems silly. But whatever, each to his or her own. I for one can appreciate the qualities of WebOS and will keep using it since it is a polished, tablet friendly operating system. After the "oh wow look what I did" factor of having Android 2.X on a tablet wore off, I realized non-Honeycomb Android on a tablet really sucks.

I already have an Android Tablet...it's cool.
I bought this for a cheap price, to have as a "coffee table" device for cruising the net and checking email. Maybe a youtube video once in a while.
AND...when you register the device you still get 50GB of cloud storage through box.net. I'm looking forward to using mine and have no intentions of putting any other OS on it...

I am a huge android fan, but Ill admit that after using the TP for a few days, WebOS is hands down a better tablet OS. Its just so much more structured. Thats why Im looking forward to see what comes out of the Palmdroid project. From my understanding, theyre trying to port the Dalvik VM over to WebOS which will allow android apps to run in "cards".

WebOS is dead Install Android 3.2 Honeycomb

Haha no, not at all. This is the worst OS I've ever touched. The OS is overall sluggish and not made for a fluid experience what so ever.
I just had mine fail to download a 30MB System update about 10 or so times.
Browsing the poor apps in the market takes a minute to load each individual apps page.
The pre-installed "apps" are a link to go download it on the market which takes the aforementioned minute load of the page.
The best app would have to be the youtube app that opens up the browser to Youtube.com, absolutely ingenious!
It has. . nothing. On it. I can't even find apps if there were good apps, you can't go to the top of free apps.. there is either top, paid, or free search tabs but not a top free.
Even the browser leaves me yearning for more as I sit there and watch the checkered white boarder all over.

Im running psycho-f15c-kernel-touchpad_3.0.2-41 on my ToychPad at 1.9GHz 100% stable! This thing is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaast!
Best and fastest Tab ever and WebOS is simply extraordinary... what a loss that that the best Tab EVER is discontinued and the most elegant and accomplished OS for a tablet has been sentenced to death. I have an ipad2 that I really like and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" that I use as my phone running Android 2.3.
Nothing touches WebOS, nothing! And nothing touches the speed of the Touchpad at 1.9Ghz! Ill use and love the Touchpad for as long as I can can, even iwht limited apps and an OS that is frozen in time. What a great loss, this is just so amazingly great! If HP had launched this a year ago and seriousely wanting to make it a success, this would be for sure the ipad killer... my a million miles.. really sad, but happy I have one and that works so well.

I just got my touchpad in the mail and have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. Here is my first impression:
wow, webos is pretty impressive. I owned and used iphones, ipads, android phones and tablets extensively and I can say that webos has the simplicity and user friendliness of ios and the multitasking and openness of android. Kind of best of both worlds. If it had the dev support of ios and android, it would certainly be better than ios and a huge competitor to android.
it is such a shame that it is almost dead. HP should have sold these tabs at $250 at launch ($50 below manufacturing cost) just like they do with the consoles and build dev support. Once established, they would make a ton of money off of their app market by selling media and apps just like apple.
introducing this tab at the same price point as the already established and ridiculously popular ipad with no apps and dev support was a quick and sure way to failure.
Such a shame. I really would have liked to see a mature webos platform as a strong competitor.
ps. I am writing this comment on my touchpad 32gb while listening to grooveshark on another browser window. The speakers are pretty loud and have great audio quality. Too bad Hulu just blocked access.
ps2. I really like the usa today app a lot. Nice job with the design and the use of gestures. That is exactly what touchcreen apps should be like

Defiantly liking WebOS alot but until more development takes place atm I will move to android when it surfaces.

has anyone used the n9? opinions? nokia is trying really hard with marketing the n9, i see it everywhere, tv adds, google, even as a banner on top of this forum. is it any good ?

The N9 is on my wish list, have played with it hands-on a couple of times and love it.. It's not the king when it comes to specs but the new OS is what sucks me in..
It's running a new OS called Meego, in the briefest of descriptions you only have 3 screens, 1) The currently used app 2) Multittasking 3)Notifications.. You simply swipe to go between the screens.. and its extremely smooth too..
Supports a 8mp camera (Carl Zeiss) which is more then enough for great pictures, and the use of the new Nokia 360 NFC speaker is quite amazing..
It also supports full length mp3 ringtones!! haha..
I could write an essay on this phone but I'll leave it to the above, in total it's the newest thing out, its a new OS which makes it exciting, just keep in mind that with all 'new' operating systems may come certain bugs within the OS that havn't been ironed out but Nokia have always been quick to clean it up also the market is said to be quite small at this stage but meh..

The phone looks really nice and the os looks smooth from what I've seen, but Nokia have already come out and said that this will be the only meego phone it brings out.

Death to android tablets?

So in azrienoch's latest video he predicts a death to the android tablet platform when windows 8 arrives for tablets and then for the windows phone. Being that windows is easily recognizable to most pc users around the world and the fact that people may just go to windows because of ease of use. Having a tablet and phone that syncs and runs the same programs as their pc may be the great selling point for microsoft. Now, I won't say I agree or disagree as I think he has some interesting arguments. But I can't help but wonder if this has much chance of happening. I am wondering what your thoughts are about the future of android?

I won't buy one. Anything with windows seems to come with a higher price. Android does everything I need to do on a tablet, if I need to do more I have a desktop.

Android must gain the ability to create,not just to modify docs and the rest ;since then Windows 8 will be for sure a step forward Android.

I do agree that it would be nice to have this feature built in to android, but QuickOffice Pro works nicely for me and I got it free (Thanks Amazon). Also google docs works ok, but needs more features for mobile editing. My G-Tab with a bluetooth or usb keyboard works great for this.

so basically android needs to become more desktop-like...

whether win8 tablet will success depends on the software in the future.
current x86 windows pc apps cannot directly run on a win8 arm tablet.
x86 tablet kills your battery life.

Windows 7 already runs on tablets and yet the iPad sold much more than all tablets running Windows since the XP to this day.
Windows 8 will be atractive, yes, but I don't think anyone can predict the death of Android. Especially since no one really knows how well the metro/desktop relation on apps is going to be accepted by the devs.

Android squeezes everything in the market share.Knowing they started from scratch and they owned the market already last year.
I personally don't care about Windows 8 tablets.
And people who know nothing about technology either buy a iPad 2 for its name or they buy a Android tablet for its price.

Unless Google finds a way to port a very functional Word/doc/PPT/Excels processing/editing application, it will continue to have a small marketshare.
That is the only thing that I want in a windows computer.

Some things to consider:
Android tablet sales are minuscule as is, it's a far, far away second choice to the iPad.
There will be 3x+ more Windows 8 installs than there are iPads in just 2 or so years. Windows is windows. 2012 will be a year filled with touch screen all in ones, convertible tablets, touch screen ultra books and of course tablets. All of these machines will be part of an enormous Windows Marketplace powered ecosystem.
Next gen Intel chips are going to be surprisingly efficient. My old Pinetrail netbook only ran hot when playing flash, hell my Nexus S gets hot playing flash. It also got 8+ hours on a single charge. Next years Atoms will run cooler (smaller and SoC) and will have better battery lifes. The GPUs are also immensely improved, better than current Sandybridge. Fan-less designs guaranteed too. People keep talking about ARM Windows 8 tablets but I don't think they'll even be a big deal.
Anyway my point is that I imagine that a majority of the people who are going to buy a real computer/laptop, and they're not getting a Mac/Macbook, will get some type of touch lightweight mobile Windows 8 machine. People will then quickly realize that you don't need a mobile-like (iOS, Android, WebOS, etc) tablet and only the Apple faithful will buy into the iPad. After that Windows tablets will take off and displace Android tablets altogether and have a really, really good shot at dethroning the iPad in the tablet market.
WP7 may grow a little but it wont get close to Android. Android is a puppet for OEMs and Carriers; and that's all it'll take to keep it on top.
PS: I do think that there will be a small market for $200-300 ~7" Android tablets but that may even get displaced by cheap ARM Windows 8 tablets.

The legacy support for Windows tablets seems like a last minute thing, they really didn't put much effort into that. The devices are usually expensive and run outdated hardware, and these devices won't become available til about the end of next year. The thought of someone predicting the end of even Android tablets is silly... Android tablets are really popular, they range from cheap to expensive( from expecting the worse to expecting the best) and the legacy support for apps is great. Besides that, tablets have proven themselves as a mobile device, why are you going to put a bulky operating system on a mobile platform anyways?

Upcoming Windows 8 Tablet/Laptops (What about Android?)

As many of you probably know from the coverage at CES, a slew of manufacturers are coming out with Windows 8 laptops that will double as tablets too. For instance, Sony has a model in the making where the screen slides down to become essentially a tablet. Another one is Lenovo, with a laptop where the screen turns all the way around to become a tablet. The one and only problem with these offerings is Windows 8. Sure, I welcome Windows 8 as a laptop OS, I've always used Windows. But when it comes to a phone/tablet OS, I don't really find any Windows offering that intriguing. I dread the thought of leaving Android and ending up with two seperate OS's and sets of apps and such on my phone and tablet. I'm sure as heck not moving to a windows phone anytime soon either.

So my questions are, do you guys think some devs will find a way to dual boot Android onto some of these devices? What will you buy for your phone, laptop, and tablet? I've read a few articles where some manufacturers are going to ship out their devices with BOTH Android and Windows 8, but I can't seem to find where I read that, and I don't believe any of the big name manufacturers were the ones doing it.

Android will at least be able to run in a virtual box, likely more. However, android's presence in the tablet market is... Underwhelming at best.

But right now, Windows 8 looks like a bastard child as a tablet OS. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll have to wait and see until it can be auditioned in person. The fact of the matter is that Android has most the market share for phones. People are going to want the same OS on their tablet for the sake of simplicity and not having to learn a whole new OS and buy a whole new set of apps. I'm hoping some of the big names catch on and send the devices with both Android and Win8. That would be a win-win for both the manufacturer and consumer IMO.

I'm looking forward to seeing what android can do once there's more ICS tablets as far as an ecosystem goes, I still think there's a lot of games and programs that they'll lack opposed to the 15+ years of PC games. I'm shocked that there's not a WoW client for android. Despite disliking WoW, it's not very resource heavy and it is massively popular.

I'm still convinced in the end, Win8 will be a hit.

I'm excited to have it on my laptop, but I'm not so sure about on a tablet. I hate the thought of having two seperate OS's on my phone and tablet. Viewsonic made a tablet about a year ago that shipped with the ability to dualboot into win7 and android. I hope Sony and others go for that idea...

I don't think they can do worst than Vista

The introduction of the Tablet and the continued development of the phone has given consumers more choice, but has also led to more name confusion.
The Tablet is like a Net-book without a keyboard and is a good name because it doesn't include the name of any particular device or application. For example, you can use a Tablet for making phone calls or taking pictures without having to call it a phone or a camera. A Tablet can be any size, for the name just describes the shape and not it's use, though it is generally accepted as being a multi-function device. So keyboard less smart phones can be called Tablets.
Adding a detachable keyboard to a Tablet makes it better for those applications where a keyboard and extra battery and Ports are useful .
So given these extra choices the consumer has to decide which suits them best.

How can anything be worse than Windows ME? My machine I got when ME came out blue screened right out of the box and needed to be restored. ^_^
I think it really depends on the productivity software available for Android and iOS when Windows 8 tablets/laptops start rolling out. I'm running into a lot of people who want to use tablets instead of laptops for their on-the-go work/computing needs.

Really not feeling Windows 8 at all, I think it'll struggle to outdo 7.
However, there will always be people who jump to get the "latest and greatest" software/hardware so I'm sure it'll do fine

Somewhere I read you could turn off the metro style (tiles) of windows 8. But let's face it, touch integration is the way for the future and I read laptops are moving towards both touch screen with the keyboard and trackpad with optional mouse. But to the user referring to tablets attached to keyboard docks. I think these will be much more than that. I think they will have more power than let's say an Asus transformer with a keyboard dock (glorified netbook). Thus I think these will lean more toward the laptop end, just thinner. At least that's what I hope.
