Hi All,
I'm very keen to move over from Android to Windows Phone but am unsure about the availability of one of my most used features. On iOS and Android, we can install Facebook Messenger, which delivers Push messages to our phones at minimal battery drain, and also without having us appear as "online" on Facebook.
However, with Windows Phone I understand there is deeply integrated "Facebook Chat". My questions are:
1. Is there some sort of equivilent app?
and
2. If not, what is the battery drain like, leaving the device logged in online all the time. Does it still use some sort of push service to deliver messages? Can I only log into Facebook, and not onto Windows Live?
Thanks!
Hello!
First, there's this app called "IM+ Pro", from which you can use Facebook chat as well.
The deeply integrated Facebook chat (and Windows Live Messenger) are a part of the messaging app. I can't find a way to log out of Windows Live Messenger but not Facebook. I know you can disable Facebook chat alone but keep Windows Live.
And yes, you can set your status to "Appear Offline."
About the battery usage, I don't know much. I will say that I have WLM set as "Available" most of the time, and my battery isn't showing too much drain.
There is also a dedicated Facebook chat app (called FIM, I beleive for Facebook IM) which also supports push notifications. I don't know if it does Appear Offline, but it probably does. It offers advantages over most more-generic IM apps like IM+ in that it supports Facebook group chat and offline messages and such too.
I used to use FIM and it was really good. I use the built-in support now. You can toggle it on and off really easily and integration is excellent.

you can try FIM

Hey there,
I have decided that I truly despise the native windows mobile facebook app. Is there any other (preferably free) ones that are good? I do think the current iphone one is quite good and easy to use, is there anyway to use that on the HD2? The WinMo one is just a pain in the arse to be honest.
Thanks
xx
I just use the touch site, works well, better than the native app.
the touch site lots of times doesnt work for sending messages it doesnt recognize when i type into the box
Hi all,
I've tried the facebook mobile site, touch site, facebook lite and market place app and they all have bad points. The worst is not all your friends status updates show. I tend to use the full site on my HD2 internet browser. Saves loads of problems. Will probably keep on using it till we get a good facebook app that is similar to the iphone app
can't really agree that the iphone facebook app is all that great though...
privacy issues is one thing, where syncing your contact with the iphone facebook app allows facebook the right to own every contact information in your iphone!
and their syncing system allows strangers on facebook to be synced to your iphone contacts... perhaps they synced it with contact information they got from other iphone users, based on phone no.s and etc, but ignoring country and area codes, which ends up syncing your iphone contact to a stranger in facebook, because they have the same phone no. (excluding country code)... that alone is scary enuf...
at least i'm happy with HD2's manila facebook integration, a little manual, but safer, and the album viewing is just smooth, with auto update of the avatar on the phone...
the app is not that impressive them, i have to admit... but iphone's privacy violation just gives me the jitters...
This is my first post here. I've read and learned lots from all of you, now I have a question that I can't find an answer to our figure out on my own.
I've searched and searched and tried pidgin, jabber, etc. and can not figure out how to populate my gtalk with facebook chat. Can anyone help me do this? I'd really like to use something like Facebook connect to add them, similar to what aim uses. I have an Incredible.

Check out Meebo. It connects a bunch of different messengers like Facebook, Talk, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, Windows Live, etc. Really, I haven't heard of any popular messengers that it doesn't work with...

I really want to use Gtalk since it is already integrated into Android. I currently use ebuddy for chat but it's a battery hog. Gtalk doesn't seem to eat as much battery. I know Facebook and Google are in a huge pissing match over $$$$ and there is NO WAY Facebook would ever open their doors and let Google in, but I thought there might be a work around that I could use to get it done myself. I'm just not that smart.
eBuddy (free app Market) - MSN, Yahoo chat, AIM, Gtalk, FaceBook, ICQ, MySpace
Works like a charm
yeah or just use a jabber transport --> but be carefull, it WILL mess with ur contacts
please let me know if you find anything. i have tried just about every IM client out there and the battery problem is almost ridiculous. both my g1 and my vibrant drain 10% per hour on idle if i am connected to an aim client, whereas it drains 1% every 2-3 hours when i kill the aim client with ATK.
I just followed http://technobuz.com/2011/05/add-facebook-chat-to-google-chat/ and it's working like a champ. It didn't mess up any of my contacts either, which is a good thing, because I keep them clean and neat as can be.
Only flaw is some facebook profiles show up as random numbers while others actually show their names. I just sent them a quick "hi" then looked on facebook messages to see who they were, and changed the name in Google Talk.
Hi All,
Does anyone know how often the People Hub checks Facebook to see if you've added new friends? Is there any way you can force it to "update"? I've recently added a few friends, but they have yet to show up in my contacts / People hub...
Any help appreciated!
Try Settings -> Email & Accounts -> Long Press on your Facebook account and click sync in the context menu.
Worked! Thanks for the quick reply!
I haven’t connected the People Hub to my Facebook (yet).
However, I’m getting Facebook updates in the hub because my Windows Live is linked to my Facebook.
So…how does it all work? If I connect my Facebook well I have a duplicate of events. Shall I disconnect my Facebook from my Windows Live? What do people recommend?
Also, with regards to syncing – if you press and hold the “what’s new” title a refresh box pops open.
i have facebook and windows live connected to facebook and both syncing to phone... don't see double ups of events.
I have my Facebook account setup and my Live connected to Facebook, there are no duplicates. I'm guessing when both are present its smart enough to just use one source.
Thanks guys (or girls – wonder who’s buying the wp7 most).
I’m currently trying to decide what to do with my Windows Live profile. It’s good having the contacts linked with Facebook, but don’t know if it needs to be a ‘second Facebook’. It’s my email first and foremost.
Everything I upload to Skydrive doesn’t need to be shared with Facebook.

You can (and should) disable that in the Facebook settings on Windows Live.

Yes, I'm coming to the same conclusion. Windows Live does have layers of privacy, so it's not that which concerns me. It's more so that I don't need a second facebook.
Any particular reason why you've disable FB in Windows Live?
I didn't disable FB, I just disabled Windows Live from automatically posted pictures to FB Seems dangerous for every pic you take to go to Windows Live and thus to FB. Not all pics need to be public.
That said, I'm not really sure what you mean about having a second facebook. You mean in the phone? I've got FB linked, I have my FB account added, AND I have the FB app

Nah, I was referring to how my Facebook posts were appearing on my Windows Live Profile page... I've changed it so that's no longer the case.
The way Microsoft has integrated Facebook with Windows Live confuses me. A lot of what Microsoft does confuses me - but I generally like their products.
WP7 - very smooth.
Edit: For example; I use Twitter & and Foursquare - yet they can't by integrated with Windows Live. Microsoft's goal of making Windows Live a 'one stop shop' for social networking feeds is a fail!

Your facebook account is connected to your Windows Live account at Live.com ...
I've only just got the ChaCha so am unable to get a good impression of battery life yet, but does anyone know if the built in Facebook Chat widget/app uses the C2DM framework (like the official app, Beejive, IM+ and others) or does it simply constantly poll the network and drain battery?
The app seems really good and it would be a shame if I had to remember to log out all the time to avoid sucking the battery dry. I'm used to leaving Beejive running all the time as it has VERY little hit on battery.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Cheers.
You have to remember to log off all the time :/
It started to pissing me off not because of the battery drain but because wherever I am I seem like a facebook addict meaning that im constanly logged in FB chat
I'm thinking to uninstall the widget since facebook app has chat if i ever want to chat with FB friend (which is something i dont do often).
But yeah end of the line it seems to have push notifications and when you are on the pc and log in FB chat its turned on the cell phone too.
Want an option like to never go online automatically but only manual because its a nice widget from time to time.
Hello,
After long time I have again started using messenger chat in my wp7, earlier it use to work perfectly but from the last 2 days when I logged into messenger chat it shows no one is online even my status is shown offline to other messenger users whereas when I login to desktop live messenger app it shows online users and everything works expected, this means there is some issue with my phone and not live messenger.
I had recently upgraded to outlook.com but switched but to hotmail thinking this might be causing issue but still it shows no one is online.
I also realized I am unable to update apps too, Ball Maze, Translator & Whatsapp I have updates for these apps but it is not getting updated.
Somebody please help

Ensure that
1) Your FB chat is set to ON in messaging settings.
2) Your WiFi/ Data connection is working fine. (Open any website IE to confirm it).
Yes, FB chat is broken for me too. Nothing wrong with your phone.
I dont use fb chat, I am talking about Windows Live Messenger chat it shows no user online even when my few friends are online likewise it shows I am Signed in(available) but to my friends I am shown offline, I face this issue only on my phone but not on PC messenger application. Also I am unable to update apps from last 2 days or so.
