[Q] New Facebook friends and People hub? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Does anyone know how often the People Hub checks Facebook to see if you've added new friends? Is there any way you can force it to "update"? I've recently added a few friends, but they have yet to show up in my contacts / People hub...
Any help appreciated!

Try Settings -> Email & Accounts -> Long Press on your Facebook account and click sync in the context menu.

Worked! Thanks for the quick reply!

I haven’t connected the People Hub to my Facebook (yet).
However, I’m getting Facebook updates in the hub because my Windows Live is linked to my Facebook.
So…how does it all work? If I connect my Facebook well I have a duplicate of events. Shall I disconnect my Facebook from my Windows Live? What do people recommend?
Also, with regards to syncing – if you press and hold the “what’s new” title a refresh box pops open.

i have facebook and windows live connected to facebook and both syncing to phone... don't see double ups of events.

I have my Facebook account setup and my Live connected to Facebook, there are no duplicates. I'm guessing when both are present its smart enough to just use one source.

Thanks guys (or girls – wonder who’s buying the wp7 most).
I’m currently trying to decide what to do with my Windows Live profile. It’s good having the contacts linked with Facebook, but don’t know if it needs to be a ‘second Facebook’. It’s my email first and foremost.
Everything I upload to Skydrive doesn’t need to be shared with Facebook.

You can (and should) disable that in the Facebook settings on Windows Live.

Yes, I'm coming to the same conclusion. Windows Live does have layers of privacy, so it's not that which concerns me. It's more so that I don't need a second facebook.
Any particular reason why you've disable FB in Windows Live?

I didn't disable FB, I just disabled Windows Live from automatically posted pictures to FB Seems dangerous for every pic you take to go to Windows Live and thus to FB. Not all pics need to be public.
That said, I'm not really sure what you mean about having a second facebook. You mean in the phone? I've got FB linked, I have my FB account added, AND I have the FB app

Nah, I was referring to how my Facebook posts were appearing on my Windows Live Profile page... I've changed it so that's no longer the case.
The way Microsoft has integrated Facebook with Windows Live confuses me. A lot of what Microsoft does confuses me - but I generally like their products.
WP7 - very smooth.
Edit: For example; I use Twitter & and Foursquare - yet they can't by integrated with Windows Live. Microsoft's goal of making Windows Live a 'one stop shop' for social networking feeds is a fail!

Facebook Chat won't work on my Mango-updated HD7

It tells me it can't connect to see who's online. I've gone through all the different walkthroughs online, and none of them work.
Also, I can't seem to delete my linked Facebook account in Settings. It tells me this feature isn't available yet so I have to go to Live.com to do it, but when I do, it tells me I can't remove it because: There seems to be some trouble connecting this service to Windows Live right now. Please try again later..
Can anybody help? I swear I was allowed to delete my Facebook account in Settings last night...
"Delete Facebook?
This feature is not working yet. You can go to the Windows Live site on your computer and remove Facebook from your Windows Live account if you want to delete it"
This is what it says when I hold down my Facebook account and tap delete.

How long has it been since you added Facebook chat to your Windows Live profile?
If its only been a few hours, you may have to wait a day or two. Sometimes it can take a very long time for Windows Live and Facebook to register each other and for your Facebook contacts to start showing up in Messenger. The other methods on the forum do not always work. Sometimes it just takes a little patience. Took my phone a day before any contacts showed up.
It took me like 5 mins to have all Facebook Contact List on my Windows Live Messenger.
Do one of the methods, wait 24 hours, and then report back. Most of the focus should be on the computer end. But I think the reason why many here are jaded about this is because many of us had to wait for it to just work. Which had nothing to do with the phone.
But then if it doesn't work, you may be SOL until the official update.
Nah, still not working. Pretty gutted about that really!
what I did was I deleted Facebook then went to windows live ( the same primary windows live account on my phone) and linked the two of them, then I readded Facebook and let it sync and also resynched windows live and then it connected and within 2 hours all my contacts started showing up. also make sure u have Facebook chat turned on in the messaging options.

Did you check in your online profile to make sure you linked the correct Face Book account? I too had a simulay problem with my daughters phone seems i linked my facebook account to her windows live so it did not work on the phone..
this is how you can tell
first login to your windows live @ live.com then click profile next to your name at top right then the details link on left then in the connect to you should see windows live and facebook if you do not see this then it facebook never connected and you should follow the steps again to connect facebook if you do see facebook click the manage link then click the edit link under facebook make sure the name that shows that you are connected to is the same as the one on your phone if it is not then you need to delete the facebook account from your profile next login into the correct facebook account then do the adding of the facebook account again and after you complete it and see your friends in the online and off line area of messenger you can go to your phone and resync facebook and windows live then in messenger tap offline then tap online it should be good then...
thing to note is the facebook account on windows live must match the one on your phone.
Mine kept saying it couldn't find anyone online even tho me Live account and Facebook were connected, but I managed to fix it.
I'm not sure if this was this trick but..:
1) Go to your Live account
2) Go to services
3) Go to the Facebook service
4) Just hit Save, even if you havent changed anything (also make sure the Chat is ticked).
5) Sync your Live account and Facebook on your phone
Everything was already ticked in my settings, but I just hit Save anyway and seconds later my Facebook Chat contacts started appearing.
Maybe somethings is improperly saved, and by just clicking the Save button again the settings are properly saved.
Do this:
Install Windows Live Essential, Log on WIndows Live Messenger
On the Bottom Right Corner of the Messenger Window, click Add and follow the step to connect Facebook for Live.
Log Out after you are done and then re log -in again.
You should be able to see the friendlist in a group called " Facebook" ( Must set show all friend, not "Online Only" )
Right click on a friend in Facebook group, and choose "Enable Facebook Chat"
Right now, you should see your Facebook friendlist on Windows Phone Chat.

Are you familiar with occam's razor m8 ??? "the simplest explanation is most likely the correct one."...
If all ppl have solve this by following those instruction, then you MUST do something wrong...
Follow the guides to the letter starting from blanc and not with " oh i id that and its not working' attitude....
just go to your Settings-Battery Saver, and UNCHECK 2 boxes :
always turn on Battery Saver when Battery is low,
turn on Battery Saver now, until next charge.
If you have unchecked both of them, you can connect to your Facebook Chat from messaging without any problem

[Q] twitter/linkedin contacts?

Has anyone been able to get their twitter and linkedin contacts to show up?
I understand it might take awhile to sync between windows live, but it's been hours. In addition, I can get linkedin and twitter updates to show up in my what's new feed in the people hub, but only if I unselect the "only show posts from people visible in my contact list" option, which make the feed very cluttered.

im in the same situation
that makes me feel better, probably just going to be more time for everything to populate
No contacts either
Same situation...its been 4 hours now and no contacts. News feeds work (if you turn of the settings to allow ones without contacts)
Maybe this is a diference between the RTM and 7712 ?
Mine stills says "Setting up your account", been that way for hours.
same here
Same here no help

Most likely wont work til RTM dosnt seem to be in this build.. BTW thanks for the plug on wpcentral dont want you to think i have forgot about ww updates I am currently working on a big one plus one for mango I had to get some other development out of the way... new weather update will have bug fixes changed layout several tile layouts and a sports weather function.. comming in about a week...
Twitter is working just fine for me now. Took a while for my Twitter contacts to appear though, longer than 4 hours. Now it works just fine.
It is working for me, but I haven't been able to figure out the exact parameters for it working..

I'm finding I have to do that for every new bunch of people that I follow.
Hopefully this is a bug in 7712 and will be fixed in the RTM build.
My LinkedIn is connected in the accounts setup, but I can't see any of my contacts in People :/
Is it btw possible to add an other live account and use that one for messaging??
I did this and can't see any of my contacts at the messaging hub :/
Twitter is working fine for me
Took about 5 minutes to set up the account and sync.

so your twitter contacts are appearing with your other contacts in the people hub?
No luck for me getting my twitter contacts to show, Im on AT&T with a Samsung Focus. Ive done about everything I can think of to make it work, no go.
I'm starting to think this might be another of the gaps between our release and the rtm release. It's been around 18 hours since I put my linkedin and twitter account info in the phone, and still no contact integration. I can get it to show in my what's new in the people hub, but without the contact integration, that feed is hopelessly cluttered.
I updated my Focus to 7712 yesterday.
Like some of you, Twitter still shows: "Setting up your account" - and it's been more than 12 hours.
I too, can see Twitter feeds, and can reply and post, put they do not appear on the People Hub.
I'm seeing that others say they are using a Focus; so, I wonder... is this something happening only to us using it?
I am using a Focus v1.3, and I have a 16GB SD on it which has worked flawlessly. Also, my device is developer unlocked through AppHub / Dreamspark.
Also, I updated to 7712 without changing the Zune client; that is, I had version 4.8 from when I installed the 7661 update, and when I plugged in the phone it downloaded 7712 and updated without a problem.
I hope this helps to sort out the issue.
definitely not a focus-only problem.
omnia 7 here, and i'm experiencing the same.
yea my zune software version is 4.8.2098.0 as well, as i didn't think there's a new one and the update went through anyway.

[Q] How to add a SECOND Windows Live to the Messaging hub?

Hello my xda friends,
Last night I updated to Mango RTM version. Its all working very good.
I synced my Windows Live account with mail and people.
Also the chat is working good thru the Messaging hub.. But only facebo
ok is showing up..
So my question is: How can I add Windows Live accounts to the chat function?
Thanks alot
EDIT:
Some additional information: I have 2 Windows Live account. One for the marketplace (a fake one). This is also the one I add first in the phone.
This is because Zune then sees my fake account so im able to download apps.
After that I add my 'good' account. The problem is, the people from this account are not showing up in the Messaging hub??!!
Sounds excessively complicated to me. I'd just stick to one Live account (I use the one tied to my Xbox Live account, personally).

Yes I know but as far as I know its the only way to download / install apps from the Marketplace?
I tried a hard reset and entered my normal account first... then the Messaging page IS showing my people BUT as you can guess, I cannot download anything from the marketplace.
So right now its Marketplace VS Messenger....
You can't. The built-in Messenger only uses the primary Live ID. You cannot have it sign-on to multiple Live IDs at once, or use an alternate ID.
It seems to be that the marketplace is already available
At the 23 of august MS finally added the Netherlands to the list!
Finally I can drop my fake account
Thanks for all the answers

Noob's question on HTC Sense - Sorry if it seems dumb!

I just got my Sensation after jumping from the "magick Kingdom of Apple (tm)" and an old iPhone 3G.
I'm so pleased with the Sensation, the screen is amazing and so responsive but - since I'm used to Apple's - "My way or the Highway" approach, some of the freedom has me totally confused.
On the 3G there was one mail app - I see I now have GMail and HTC Mail and that's before I go near the Market.
I had a simple contact app but now I'm pushed towards HTC People which is flooding in my facebook contacts and their posts when mostly I just want folks names and numbers to phone or txt them. If I want facebook I'm happy to start a Facebook app, other than that I really can't be ar$ed reading the piles of crap that too many "friends" are putting on.
I read that I will have some things sync'ing via Google "automatically" and the phone keeps pestering me to sign up for an HTC Sense account while online forums are saying don't have a Sense account running as it will eat up your battery...
Maybe if HTC provided a manual with more than 10 miniature pages to start explaining all this!!!!
Can someone please explain in noob friendly English what is the best combination of general apps / syncing to get mail, contacts, SMS and calendar working so that they are automatically backed up but without trying to sync every 10 mins and running the battery down quicker than my car drinks petrol (which is pretty damn fast!). I don't care if its the HTC apps or Google Apps, I just one to be running one mail client, 1 calendar etc and be able to get all that data back should I need to.
I'm not a complete idiot by the way, I ran the 3G JB'd and unlocked for 3 years through every update Apple put out and I am here because I will root and load a custom rom eventually, but I'd like to learn my way about before doing anything too adventurous.
Anyone offer me any advice or point me to a website offering a class in "HTC Sense 101".
Thanks
BelfastLad
I second this question, starting new on a sensation this week and.... somehow my facebook wants to link with my HTC facebook.... wtf? Didn't realize the sense account was wasting my battery... should I disable it?... Basic configuration theory regarding all this Sense stuff would be useful... thanks.

Gmail is the official google app for Gmail. By default, Gmail will show your google account stuff when you first sign into google account and link it to your phone.
HTC Mail is a mail client that you can configure to show any of your emails. For example, I have my Gmail specifically for my gmail (I could funnel my hotmail and exchange account to my gmail, but I don't want to), and I use my HTC Mail specifically for my Exchange account.
Now, with Facebook. I linked my Facebook account with Facebook for HTC Sense. You don't have to do this, but if you like using Friend Stream instead of the official Android app, do this.
If you go to settings > Accounts & sync > Facebook for HTC Sense, you can sync live feed, calendar, and/or contacts.
I sync my contacts so that my Gmail contacts come up with facebook pictures.
With the official Facebook app, it'll ask you if you want to sync contacts. I choose no because it funnels ALL of your Facebook friends into your contacts account, something I don't like.
If this is all confusing, you can just go to contacts, hit menu, hit view, scroll down to options, and uncheck the Facebook so that they don't show up in your contacts.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you want more info.
Just use the gmail app for email (assuming you only use gmail) go into accounts and sync, add your google account and it will auto sync your mail, contacts and callendar. Dont worry about battery drain gmail uses push email.
Unless you want to use the htc fabeook or friend stream widgets I would avoid facebook for htc sense, just add your facebook account in accounts and sync, it will import your facebook friends into your contacts (if you want), shortly after youll get a notification about matched contacts and you can link your existing contacts with your facebook contacts, so all information (phone, email, address, facebook etc) is under a single contact. This same process can be done using your twitter account.
As for calendar there are several calendar apps on the market, I personally use Jorte calendar, it will sync with your goole calander and has some nice widget options and nice UI.
The only things I have auto syncing on my phone are google, facebook and twitter and weather. Like I said, unless you want to use the htc widgets I would avoid syncing anything "sense" related.
Thanks for the pointers so far
Thanks to the Mod who helpfully moved my thread. I'll watch that more carefully in future.
And to the guys who've posted some good helpful advice, much appreciated.
By this time next week I'm sure I'll be well sorted. The week after I'll probably be getting itchy fingers to get rooting!
Thanks for the help but I'd still echo the 2nd posters comments. A guide to initial set-up and recommended first tweaks would be great if some "expert" could ever find the time to write one.
- Any takers?????
A "quick" guide to HTC Sense
I will try to make this as simple as I can. Feel free to fill in the gaps if I miss something.
Initial Setup
It's nice of HTC to include a personalised version of that Android initial setup, but I recommend you skip through as much as you can.
- Select you language --- pretty straight forward, right?
- Transfer my stuff --- it's a really great tool if you need to use it
- Internet connection --- choose "Mobile network or Wi-Fi"; I don't know if this is the case with the Sensation, but on older HTC phones this setting actually forces the phone to get the correct settings for APNs
- Scheduled sync --- choose "Automatically sync data"; don't worry, you can turn this off later if you want too, it will just help sync your data if you add an account later in the setup
- Set up Wi-Fi network --- choose your Wi-Fi network
- Use Google location --- it's all up to you here, but it does help to let your apps know your location. I recommend you leave those on
- Tell HTC --- as you can read on the screen, Tell HTC is software that runs in the background. It's something similar to reporting errors on Windows
- Set up accounts --- you can always add accounts later, so I recommend you skip this step
Google account
As this is Android, you will have to sign in to your Google account. When you do this, your email will be synced to Gmail, your contact will show up in the People app from HTC and your calendar will be synced to the Calendar app also from HTC. You can always choose what items from your Google account you want to sync from Setting - Accounts & Sync - Google. I personally use all their services, so I leave all on.
HTC Mail app
HTC have made their own mail app so you can easily view all your account (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Exchange or other POP3 services). This is pretty useful and it works great. I only have the Hotmail and Yahoo accounts connected here, since Gmail does the rest.
HTC People app
All your contacts in one place. Nice, right? Not quite... It took me about a week to figure this one out, but I finally got it to work just right. I keep my contact on Google, you know, family, close friends, work people... and all the detailes I need are there, but when you start to use Facebook, Facebook for HTC, Tweeter, Yahoo and so on, you get all these messeges to sync your contacts. Fine, I did that, now my People app is full of "friends" I haven't spoken in years. They just lay there. And above it all you get all kinds of messages in the status bar to let you know you can "link" you contacts. A huge list if I might add . So whats the deal here?
Sure, linking your contact is useful. Say you don't have a friends email adress, but he posted it on Facebook, or his birthday, or something else. You can get them from linking his accounts and you can find all this info in his Contact Info page. Beside that, you have quick access to conversation history (txt or email), updates, gallery or call history. HTC Sense is great at that And even though Facebook and Facebook for HTC Sense target both the same service, there are a few diferences. For instance, the simple Facebook only syncs contact, while Facebook for HTC Sense syncs live feeds and calendars too for you to use on the Friend Stream app/widget or in the Calendar. The same goes for Twitter.
But when you start linking people, you see that their photo is being changed to whatever profile picture they have on Facebook, Tweeter or other services... and even their name can change too. To resolve this you just go into a persons contact info page, tap the chain icon at the top right hand corner, from there, tap the picture and choose from the list. The same for the name. Sure, you get previews of posts or text messages next to someone in the People app, but you get rid of those "stupid pictures"
Also, I found that having people actualy stored on the phone and not on Google, makes this process a little bit harder, because every time Facebook for HTC synced, contact photos changed. Very annoying.
I find it useful to sync contact from all services, what the hell, let's go crazy, but I sure don't like seing them all in the People app, so just tap the menu button, then tap View. Here you can scroll down to Options and pick what you want to be displayed. You won't lose contacts you don't pick, or the links between them, they just don't appear anymore. Jobe done.
As for creating contacts, be careful. By default, the contact type field is set to whatever category you are viewing in People. If you chose "Phone" here, the contact information will ONLY be present on your phone and it WILL NOT SYNC to other services like Gmail. I'm talking about information that you put there, not the one that is being synced. So in the end you must back them up if you plan to install a custom ROM, or you will lose them.
Accounts & sync
Don't be scared to dive deep in these settings and choose only what you want to sync. Every account has it's own settings, so be pationd.
Here I have my Google account syncing everything, Facebook is syncing contacts, Facebook for HTC Sense is also syncing everything but once a day, HTC Sense (yes, I have an account set up, and it doesn't drain the batery) has only Update when opened checked and update schedule is manual, News, Show Me and Stocks are all manualy updated too since I don't use them at all, Twitter syncs all but manual, Weather is syncing automatically every hour (not much trafic there). All these settings where mare having in mind that I have Auto-Sync enabled. Yes, I know, not so good, but the ammount of data being used is very little because it only has to do the hard job of getting all the stuff to my phone once, then it keeps track if that is up to date.
I hope I've touched every aspect and doubt that you might have had about HTC Sense. Chears.
You COULD read all the long posts above about how to get Sense working....or you could do the simple thing and just use CM7. I say rather than trying to get your feet wet with Sense, just jump straight off the deep end and S-OFF+root your phone and flash CM7. With CM7 you experience Android as it was meant to be experienced by Google. No extra nonsense, no crazy background syncing hogging your battery, just pure, silky smooth Android. Facebook just syncs your contacts with their picture and any phone numbers or email addresses listed on their facebook profile. You can also combine them with your Google contacts, so say for example you meet some girl at a bar and get her number and put it into your phone as a contact. Then later you become facebook friends with her. You can combine her facebook with the contact you already put in at the bar as one unit, and now in addition to the phone number you put in before, you now have her picture from facebook associated with her in your contacts book as well as any email addresses or other phone numbers from her facebook. This is all extremely simple and easy to do with the vanilla no-sense UI.
Not to mention the rom in general is lightning fast and smooth like warm butter It also has CPU management built in as well as tons of other features. It's the perfect combination of performance and simplicity.

Having ruined my eyesight reading the cyan post above, it wasn't worth the effort. Seriously, I like Cyanogenmod as much as the next guy, but it's not answering the OP's question.
To the OP: Have you had a look on your SD card? When I got my Desire there was a proper manual on there in .pdf format. I've not checked on my Sensation because I put the SD card from my Desire into it when I upgraded. Failing that you can download it from here: http://www.htc.com/uk/help/htc-sensation/#download

[Q] Facebook Push Messenger?

Hi All,
I'm very keen to move over from Android to Windows Phone but am unsure about the availability of one of my most used features. On iOS and Android, we can install Facebook Messenger, which delivers Push messages to our phones at minimal battery drain, and also without having us appear as "online" on Facebook.
However, with Windows Phone I understand there is deeply integrated "Facebook Chat". My questions are:
1. Is there some sort of equivilent app?
and
2. If not, what is the battery drain like, leaving the device logged in online all the time. Does it still use some sort of push service to deliver messages? Can I only log into Facebook, and not onto Windows Live?
Thanks!
Hello!
First, there's this app called "IM+ Pro", from which you can use Facebook chat as well.
The deeply integrated Facebook chat (and Windows Live Messenger) are a part of the messaging app. I can't find a way to log out of Windows Live Messenger but not Facebook. I know you can disable Facebook chat alone but keep Windows Live.
And yes, you can set your status to "Appear Offline."
About the battery usage, I don't know much. I will say that I have WLM set as "Available" most of the time, and my battery isn't showing too much drain.
There is also a dedicated Facebook chat app (called FIM, I beleive for Facebook IM) which also supports push notifications. I don't know if it does Appear Offline, but it probably does. It offers advantages over most more-generic IM apps like IM+ in that it supports Facebook group chat and offline messages and such too.
I used to use FIM and it was really good. I use the built-in support now. You can toggle it on and off really easily and integration is excellent.
