That way, we can get a copy.
For more advanced users, please run a logcat during download process, so that we can try and get a URL to download it manually.
Thanks!
no prob I was just saying in another thread that i am new to the forums and a verizon wireless employee. I was just about to post a thread letting all the devs know that i have access to info a few days (sometimes...you guys are good) before the general public. I also have a thunderbolt that im not afraid to brick trying new things (giunea pig) because i can get it replaced being an employee.

I'm assuming that if you're rooted you shouldn't touch any updates until they've been modified by the devs?

Honestly I am noobish myself but from what I understand if you CAN get the update, it may unroot your device but you just have to do the last few steps of the rooting process over to gain root again. If you are using a custom ROM you may have to manually push the update to the phone.
Again this is not absolute but this is what I believe to be true. If I am mistaken please correct me. This is why I think the OP wants to be able to download it from a website...and also to tear it down for any new goodies

There's been some talk that they'll force-push the update. Dunno the veracity of that. I'm thinking about returning to stock beforehand.
What can we do to stop the OTA?

If that's the case, there must be a way to block or prevent this. Would any devs care to add their valuable input?
Would switching to an AOSP make any difference?
The release date is 05/03/2011. That means, we have ample time to get a plan in place. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would hate to re-root their phone.
Is it possible for them to lock the bootloader with this OTA?

I would say switching to aosp would prevent it as it prevented the updating of the prl.
No. In motorola phones they are locked by hardware. If you were to install a new kernel it trips a component that basically bricks your phone and to disable the trip you would need to crack military grade encryption. We are okay.

I already put in a different thread that verizon has announced that the ota is scheduled for release 5/3. I have noticed in the past that software updates have been released earlier than scheduled release dates (e.g. froyo update for fascinate was available 7pm the night before)

According to this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027706) in the development forum, CM7 is listed under "AOSP Based." As for senseless ROM's, I think it depends on the specific ROM in question, as some are and some aren't (but I could be wrong).
Are we waiting for the update that was just recently announced? The same one that's already in bamf? Or am I missing something?

I might have just saw the update. I saw something out of the corner of my eye in the notification bar but when I turned my head nothing. I then rebooted my phone and I saw something else out of the corner of my eye (I have really good peripheral vision). There is a small chance it was the clock changing times (yes my vision is that good). I will let everyone know if the phone feels faster and more updated to know for sure.

Yup, there's already been leaked update(s) for ICS 4.0 (for MEARET firmware if I am correct) that have been found. Waiting on a ATT.en.US update to be found via cheesecake now. Should be just a matter of time until all us AT&T folks get to enjoy.

Yeah, thanks saw that, so its basically a search on Moto servers for updates? Thanks for the info btw!
project cheesecake allows us to change what server we check for updates on, allowing us to pull them from not only the standard production server, but also development ones not usually available to the public.
nothing douchey about reading and searching instead of waiting for someone to give you the answer. the reply given could have been found by you doing some legwork.
So where do you go about checking the servers, can you give me links or something? (i did search for this and couldn't find what i needed)

Just download the Cheesecake.apk to root of sdcard, open through file manager (or whatever) click first button, reboot, click second to choose from list of servers, third button to check for updates. Its all explained in the link.

Actually, it is not that easy to find what Cheesecake is. But, hey - any opportunity to show how superior you are to someone else.
Sup Guys!
Quick question. Would what I have my phone set as under build.prop (ro.build.device etc.) change what updates I could get from cheesecake? Currently my phone is set as a Galaxy S II. I'm wondering this because whenever I check cheesecake every server is usually down....
Good question. I didn't think of that before. Mine is set to look like a infuse. Same problem here

I would highly recommend being on stock rooted (or stock deodexed ROM) to check on Cheesecake. Both of those do not mess with the build.prop file, so Motorola would still see your phone as if it were on the original firmware.

ive messed with the build.prop, and i do not believe its called by the update server.... seems to me its checking something else....maybe parts of the build.prop, but if it were only the build prop, you would not need an A2 to check for updates for an A2, you would just have to change your build.prop....
so i think the answer is ...... unfortunatly...... need to be on an att based rom to recieve an att based update.....
and most servers will be down 99% of the time, and only up for short snaps... y we all have to check constantly.....

Either way, I'm doing my fair share of checking.
It is not cheesecake that checks the build.prop, it is the andriod update checker that does it.
You MUST "appear" as stock to both the update check app that chesecake calls, and to the updater script when we really have an update. As said the fxz is the best start point, for a true real production OTA.

Did you make your edit in Linux with gedit? If so it does that.... If your phone is overwriting it, it is mostlikely and issue in your ROM. Check that you do not have anything in /system/etc/init.goldfish.rc or something similar, that could overwrite it, that or /system/etc/init.d
Those really are the only things that could do something like that... or cheesecake, but I highly doubt that.
This may be a stupid question, but has anyone flashed to or been on 2.3.5. with root and with [whatever] rom, installed Cheesecake, and tried getting updated to 2.3.6. through Cheesecake?

Yes, there were several people back in Nov. that found those leaks... No not now though.. All cheesecake does is it connects to all the MOTO pro,QA,DEV, and TEST, servers, to find updates that the devs put up their for internal QA/QC at each phase... that is why they are not up for very long.
That is why even if you were on 2.3.5 you would still find the 4.04 stuff... I know I saw a couple of ICS leaks last week (they were gone before I could get them downloaded fully) right after I fxz'd with 2.3.5... I am now back to 2.3.6 bone stock rooted, so that I can test something special I am attempting. Don't ask what just yet, but if you know anything about me, you know I have one real mission in here, and this is still working to that end, I have no clue yet if this will work though.

Heres the letter I received:
Hi.
Thanks for signing up for the Atrix 2 software test. Our apologies for the delay in starting this test! The software will begin to be pushed out later this afternoon; however, it may take several hours for all targeted devices to receive the update.
We're eager to hear your feedback. Please share your experience on the private community provided, and via the survey I will send out after you've had some time to work with the software.
To ensure we hear you, please follow these guidelines:
Please post all your feedback in our private community (link below). This also where you'll find help during the soak.
Please do not call or contact Motorola, AT&T or your carrier support for help during the soak. Those teams are not yet ready to support this software.
I'm not able to check private messages on the forums during soaks, so if you need immediate help that's not a good route to take. Post in the community instead.
If you have any problems accessing the private community, please click here for help.
Please do not post questions publicly, on our site or elsewhere.
Please start your visit to the private community here. You'll find additional important information in the Welcome message as soon as you sign in. (Note that you will not be able to post in the public communities during the soak test.)
Thanks so much for your participation! We really appreciate your time and insights.
Regards,
[name removed]
It's your call on whether you want to install it or not.
I can almost guarantee that you will not be able to go back to gingerbread afterwards.
My advice? Download it, but do NOT install it. Pull it from your cache folder and send it to one of the devs here. DO NOT post the link in the forums.

it is confirmed same as stock as the soak test update version given by Motorola today is same as the second leak.the release date,md5 sums all check out.

There's always a benefit of root my friend. First and for most is removing bloarware (AT&T preinstalled apps that take up memory and space in background) So many other reasons why root is best. How I describe it to people is like this. Taking a Governor off a car is similar to rooting an android phone. Technically there is only one ROM made from OTA ICS right now here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960679 but there are others in the development section built of previous ICS "Leaks" we obtained. Such as SCV7, Swifty Trix, CM10, MIUI and a stock based off OTA as well. Hope this helped explain a little. Enjoy the power of the Dark side!

Umm, cm10 is a true opensource rom and not based on any leak/OTA, it is compiled from scratch. The only files taken from ICS are a few libraries and kernel modules and the like, and those have no bearing on version of ICS they were taken from.

As far as other ROMs go for on this device, as far as ICS goes, like I stated, one (two including stock/rooted) is only based off the official OTA ICS build. How did I know you'd come to CM's rescue in here Jim? lol. JP...keep up the good work man. Looking forward to your CM10 build! (Checking forums every half hour lol)

LOL... I will PM you with a link to my latest build, so you can see how it is. I have several testers now, but for me there are still a few bugs that make me, the perfectionist, not ready to release it to the world just yet.

Thanks man, you know I'm always willing to test as well. Well, as long as there's no hard brick possibility in the process lol. But with this new fxz back to ICS stock I'm feeling more secure now hahaha. Yes, I would be the perfectionist too if it came to making my own ROM. Probably why I never have attempted yet. Too much work n stress for me to handle. I give you Dev'so credit! Thanks for sharing link man. I'll give it a go n let you know how everything runs. (If I find anything new)

Tester
I am probably not an ideal tester, due to lack of technical knowledge regarding Android, but should you need a tester of the moderate abilities, and knowledge I would be more than willing to be of help if I actually was help. I currently am running the build of CM10 that is currently available, and am impressed with it, but look forward to your build with much anticipation. I can only take off my hat, as it were, to you, and all of the developers in this arena.

Ok if i use this method to root my atrix 2, can i unroot after that?
And i’ve heard that there are problems that is experienced by other atrix 2 users(superuser versions 3.0.3 and above), how do i fix that?
My atrix 2 is running stock ics from the official OTA , before that it was running 2.3.6 unrooted ,stock.
Thanks in advance for clearing my doubts.

No, and no. No on 2nd system because it still uses the same underlying stock ICS kernel.
If you took the OTA, then you are stuck on ICS. This has been the case with major android releases and not being able to go backward for a very long time.
