Sup Guys!
Quick question. Would what I have my phone set as under build.prop (ro.build.device etc.) change what updates I could get from cheesecake? Currently my phone is set as a Galaxy S II. I'm wondering this because whenever I check cheesecake every server is usually down....
Good question. I didn't think of that before. Mine is set to look like a infuse. Same problem here

I would highly recommend being on stock rooted (or stock deodexed ROM) to check on Cheesecake. Both of those do not mess with the build.prop file, so Motorola would still see your phone as if it were on the original firmware.

ive messed with the build.prop, and i do not believe its called by the update server.... seems to me its checking something else....maybe parts of the build.prop, but if it were only the build prop, you would not need an A2 to check for updates for an A2, you would just have to change your build.prop....
so i think the answer is ...... unfortunatly...... need to be on an att based rom to recieve an att based update.....
and most servers will be down 99% of the time, and only up for short snaps... y we all have to check constantly.....

Either way, I'm doing my fair share of checking.
It is not cheesecake that checks the build.prop, it is the andriod update checker that does it.
You MUST "appear" as stock to both the update check app that chesecake calls, and to the updater script when we really have an update. As said the fxz is the best start point, for a true real production OTA.

Did you make your edit in Linux with gedit? If so it does that.... If your phone is overwriting it, it is mostlikely and issue in your ROM. Check that you do not have anything in /system/etc/init.goldfish.rc or something similar, that could overwrite it, that or /system/etc/init.d
Those really are the only things that could do something like that... or cheesecake, but I highly doubt that.
This may be a stupid question, but has anyone flashed to or been on 2.3.5. with root and with [whatever] rom, installed Cheesecake, and tried getting updated to 2.3.6. through Cheesecake?

I'm not suggesting that it's "broke", I was just curious after reading what magicXB wrote about 'appearing as stock as possible'. I don't know what (if any) rom you were running when you found it. Okay, so it WAS a stupid question I guess.

Yes, there were several people back in Nov. that found those leaks... No not now though.. All cheesecake does is it connects to all the MOTO pro,QA,DEV, and TEST, servers, to find updates that the devs put up their for internal QA/QC at each phase... that is why they are not up for very long.
That is why even if you were on 2.3.5 you would still find the 4.04 stuff... I know I saw a couple of ICS leaks last week (they were gone before I could get them downloaded fully) right after I fxz'd with 2.3.5... I am now back to 2.3.6 bone stock rooted, so that I can test something special I am attempting. Don't ask what just yet, but if you know anything about me, you know I have one real mission in here, and this is still working to that end, I have no clue yet if this will work though.

Honestly I am noobish myself but from what I understand if you CAN get the update, it may unroot your device but you just have to do the last few steps of the rooting process over to gain root again. If you are using a custom ROM you may have to manually push the update to the phone.
Again this is not absolute but this is what I believe to be true. If I am mistaken please correct me. This is why I think the OP wants to be able to download it from a website...and also to tear it down for any new goodies

There's been some talk that they'll force-push the update. Dunno the veracity of that. I'm thinking about returning to stock beforehand.

If that's the case, there must be a way to block or prevent this. Would any devs care to add their valuable input?
Would switching to an AOSP make any difference?
The release date is 05/03/2011. That means, we have ample time to get a plan in place. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would hate to re-root their phone.
Is it possible for them to lock the bootloader with this OTA?

I would say switching to aosp would prevent it as it prevented the updating of the prl.
No. In motorola phones they are locked by hardware. If you were to install a new kernel it trips a component that basically bricks your phone and to disable the trip you would need to crack military grade encryption. We are okay.

According to this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027706) in the development forum, CM7 is listed under "AOSP Based." As for senseless ROM's, I think it depends on the specific ROM in question, as some are and some aren't (but I could be wrong).

If you had really researched it you would have read that SOC won't root the kk3 leak.
The GB roms that you see have been modded or ported.
To root the kk3 leak all you have to do is flash entropy's kernel dated 11/02/11.

I'm sorry, but I'm a total noob with Samsung. I rooted to a particular ROM, but ran into some issues and had to unbrick the phone. Upon doing so, I selected the kk3 leak and then lost root. I used SOC 2.3.3 to try to reroot, but I got stuck at step 7. So I want to try flashing Entropy's kernel as you mentioned. I'm not sure how to do this though. The kernel is in a CWM .zip format, but Odin reads .tar files. Do I unzip the .zip file and then convert to a .tar file? This didn't seem to work when I initially tried it, but perhaps I did something wrong. Any special settings I need to use? Also, do I just need to reboot after I flash it and I will have root? If not, what else must I do?
Sorry again for my lack of understanding. I've been trying to find an answer for hours and have become a little desperate. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

lol. Well another member said "To root the kk3 leak all you have to do is flash entropy's kernel dated 11/02/11." I thought that meant it could be rooted. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Hi, I have noticed a ton of people curious about why AT&T people do not have ICS yet, so I thought I would answer that once and for all. I admit that I and others have gotten a little mad whenever people ask about this, but it seems they are not able to really find a clear answer, so here it is.
If you feel like this is well done, please sticky it at least until we get it all figured out.
I figure this would be best said i a Q and A type form.
Q: What is ICS, and why does everyone want it so bad?
ICS or "Ice Cream Sandwich" is android version 4.0.x. the next version, 4.1 Jellybean was just released as a slightly less important update, but ICS brought huge changes from Ginger Bread (2.3.x) the previous phone version (3.x HoneyComb was tablet only). ICS brings a slicker, darker, and better looking user interface, as well as many performance enhancements. Most of us want it more because it seems like we should than because it is actually that much better. That said it is still a great update, and most people will be happy to see it.

Q: Why is it so hard to get ICS for our phone, while others have it even though it is not officially out?
The main reason is our locked bootloader. That means it is not possible to flash or boot a custom kernel unless it is signed with Motorola's key. That is obviously impossible.
Click to collapse
Q: What is a kernel?
the kernel is a major part of any operating system. you can think of it as a sort of layer between hardware and software. It is the part of an OS that communicates directly with a device's hardware. Android is based off the open source Linux kernel, meaning it is free for anybody to build and modify. However, Motorola has only released the source for the ME865, and partially for the MB865, meaning we can't really build a kernel anyways. Then of course, even if we could build one, we wouldn't be able to boot it with our locked bootloader.
ICS is not really complete without the newer kernel that goes with it

What is Kexec, and is there any way to unlock the bootloader
The fact that I grouped these together would probably lead you to correctly believe they are related. Lets start with the second half. Simply put, NO. I hate to say it, but there is very little hope of EVER unlocking our bootloader, unless Motorola decides to do something like HTC did and allow unlocking.
Kexec is a method of hot switching kernels while still booted. It is actually just a linux tool that you can use on a computer, but it has been built for android essentially allowing you to bypass the bootloader. Theoretically it would be an easy way to run custom kernels. Then why don't we? Well a few reasons. One, we can't really get one built to begin with, especially because, at least to my knowledge, jimbridgman is the only one who actually knows what he is doing with kernel building, and he is only half here now that he got his fany new SGS3. Two, it does not work great. I am not sure the latest version is working at all on our phone, and even if it did, only one processor comes up, meaning it is really slow.

Q: What's the deal with these Droid 3 builds that supposedly boot?
Some people managed to build ICS for the droid 3 based of a 2.3.6 kernel. that means you can boot it on a stock GB kernel, and therefore you do not need to unlock the bootloader. Unfortunately that means it is not totally ICS, but it is still pretty good. Of course they are for a cdma phone, so that means no data, no calls, and no gps, making it kind of useless.
I am not going to give a link to them, but if you are really interested go search around. any of the Droid 3 AOKP and CM9 builds will boot just fine. Find more info in the dev section, but please don't start a thread asking about it.
We have been trying to port these to work for us, but that is proving more difficult than expected, and with ICS just around the corner, I don't want to put time into it. I do think it is possible, and if you are a dev looking to give it a shot, PM me and I will tell you all I know, and try to help out as much as I can.

SO DO NOT TRY FLASHING THEIR AOKP OR CM.. without backups and sufficient knowledge and experience atleast.. some changes have to be made in the rom before flashing.. i am trying to find all the files we must replace to get them working on our phone.. and just a FYI for those of you that wanna try.. other than droid 3, bionic is our nearest relative.. so u can edit and try their roms as well.. i did kinda get cm9 of bionic after replacing some required files.. but it bootlooped.. and of course bionic is cdma.. so.. good luck..

Couldn't be more wrong....they both boot just fine and are pretty functional, the problem lies in getting the radio to work.

Please I emplore you to do your proper research before making incorrect posts like this. I constantly see posts from those who think they know it all, and post idiotic things like this. Nothing makes me madder than someone who does not know how to use google and the search function.
It takes less than 2 min. to make sure you CYA before posting bad information.
Both CM9 and AOKP boot, but with no radio, as has already been said in several posts now. I have tested both.
P.S. most of us devs in here have been working on this very thing for sometime now, and I have not seen you jump in on any of threads discussing the files or how to port or anything.

Agreed, They actually run extremely well, but obviously I can't stick with them with no radio.
P.S. this is my new best thought for porting, might take some extra build.prop work too. It did not boot for me, but I think we should be able to get it to. Then it is just a question of whether or not the radio will work. there is way more in build.prop on that than I would think.

I think it may work because it really adds the cm9 stuff to our own files rather than add our files to it. maybe not the cleanest way, but it might just work.

WOW, did I really forget to add that? that was kind of one of the main points of this post I'll fix it tomorrow (actually today, I guess it is after midnight), but I need some sleep.

I have tried this method along with every idea that popped in my head of things to alter after following this guide. I have a highly modified build prop that AOKP boots with that I replaced with a lot of our build prop but there are still some things missing as no luck yet
Here is the zip file to apply to the 2.3.5 fxz, to make RSDlite flash the FXZ files properly, from the ICS leak. The steps are the same as they were for the 2.3.6 fix. Just unzip these files over top of the original fxz files.
+++++++++++++++++++++++NOTE++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have pulled these files, so that no else attempts to flash the fxz and brick thier phone. DO NOT ASK FOR THE FILES, I will not give them out knowing what happens to those on ICS that try to fxz back to GB.
Damn you are so on point ..... Starting to think Jim is like 10 people.....

LOL... You forget I had to think of several ways to possibly break this before I posted it for the rest of the world, so if there were issues, I knew what to do... How do you think I was able to flash that whole process 4 times... I built this yesterday afternoon, before I even started the process of testing the OTA out. I HAD to make sure we could flash back, so we were not like the OG Atrix guys, who can't flash an SBF now.
Thank You Jim, you are awesome.

I really hope you know how much we appreciate you being a huge asset to the atrix 2 ..... Even with the sgiii you did not leave us hanging.....Think we would be close to a chicken with his head cut off running around without you.....
There would be no way I would ever update without option to downgrade.....
Getting this added to the Noobs post as well!
Has been added along with intructions!
I'm might be using these soon. I lose data and service with the ics leak every thirty minutes, sometimes less.

Sounds like a bad Sim card. I'm not trying to clutter, just trying to help out so he can stay on ics.

I assume I can get away with just wiping data and cache, then flashing boot and system from 2.3.6 for a quick unbrick.

nope I tried... You might even need that recovery.img to bring you back to GB recovery first... I had to do that one time...

hmm, what didn't work about it? just won't boot. Recovery makes some sense, but what else is even flashed other than webtop, which I don't care about

the first time it would not boot, because the lbl file and the mbm were not loaded, and it is critical in this move back.... they have done something to the BL, to make flashing a little harder. I did a hex dump and a decompile of the new mbm file and it has a spot in it that looks like a check for correct lbl file being loaded from the fastboot flash.
The issue with the recovery is because it flashes a new recovery, and that was on the second time I had to flash the fxz, due to a bad root...

This fxz file is for All atrix 2 or only for the att atrix 2?
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Before attempting to fxz back make sure you upgrade RSDlite to the latest version, 5.7 or later.

is that all the problem is? I would still like to know what you did the first 4 times you restored, whatever that crazy process was. I can risk a brick today, my replacement comes anyways, but many others have already been totally screwed.

Me too... I have no idea why I can do it... I am pretty sure this is the same thing that the hk leak has in it. It is what we all feared.
I wonder if I have a dev phone, but my bootloader still has the A in its revision... My last replacement It seemed esier to use kexec than on other phones...

This is very weird, I have just redone the whole process 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 and ICS, and nothing strange happened (knock on wood).
I used the file from my signature.

Did you use my patch to patch the 2.3.5 fxz for the ICS leak that I posted yesterday?
I am thinking the secret is using a script and not RSDlite. That is how I always restore my phone is with my own scripts, that I was getting ready to release before all this started.
Jim
im looking to update my MMS.apk in my current AOKP rom (its like the sept 2nd version released by rains right now) im looking for a more updated version with the pop-up notification function included, my phone is running so well i dont feel a complete update necessary but i would like this pop-up function quite badly, which i assume is achievable by backing up my current mms.apk and pasting/installing the more updated version in my system/apps folder followed by wiping caches and fixing permissions. if anyone has this .apk at ready disposal could you get me a link to it?
thanks in advance
Pretty sure you can just dirty flash his 23release
