There's always a benefit of root my friend. First and for most is removing bloarware (AT&T preinstalled apps that take up memory and space in background) So many other reasons why root is best. How I describe it to people is like this. Taking a Governor off a car is similar to rooting an android phone. Technically there is only one ROM made from OTA ICS right now here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960679 but there are others in the development section built of previous ICS "Leaks" we obtained. Such as SCV7, Swifty Trix, CM10, MIUI and a stock based off OTA as well. Hope this helped explain a little. Enjoy the power of the Dark side!

Umm, cm10 is a true opensource rom and not based on any leak/OTA, it is compiled from scratch. The only files taken from ICS are a few libraries and kernel modules and the like, and those have no bearing on version of ICS they were taken from.

Yes, your right Jim. CM is device-wide... forgot to mention that. Shouldn't mater what version of ICS your on. As far as other ROMs go for on this device, as far as ICS goes, like I stated, one (two including stock/rooted) is only based off the official OTA ICS build. How did I know you'd come to CM's rescue in here Jim? lol. JP...keep up the good work man. Looking forward to your CM10 build! (Checking forums every half hour lol)

Thanks man, you know I'm always willing to test as well. Well, as long as there's no hard brick possibility in the process lol. But with this new fxz back to ICS stock I'm feeling more secure now hahaha. Yes, I would be the perfectionist too if it came to making my own ROM. Probably why I never have attempted yet. Too much work n stress for me to handle. I give you Dev'so credit! Thanks for sharing link man. I'll give it a go n let you know how everything runs. (If I find anything new)

Tester
I am probably not an ideal tester, due to lack of technical knowledge regarding Android, but should you need a tester of the moderate abilities, and knowledge I would be more than willing to be of help if I actually was help. I currently am running the build of CM10 that is currently available, and am impressed with it, but look forward to your build with much anticipation. I can only take off my hat, as it were, to you, and all of the developers in this arena.

No, and no. No on 2nd system because it still uses the same underlying stock ICS kernel.
If you took the OTA, then you are stuck on ICS. This has been the case with major android releases and not being able to go backward for a very long time.

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.

[INFO] Why we don't have ICS yet + more info about it

Hi, I have noticed a ton of people curious about why AT&T people do not have ICS yet, so I thought I would answer that once and for all. I admit that I and others have gotten a little mad whenever people ask about this, but it seems they are not able to really find a clear answer, so here it is.
If you feel like this is well done, please sticky it at least until we get it all figured out.
I figure this would be best said i a Q and A type form.
Q: What is ICS, and why does everyone want it so bad?
ICS or "Ice Cream Sandwich" is android version 4.0.x. the next version, 4.1 Jellybean was just released as a slightly less important update, but ICS brought huge changes from Ginger Bread (2.3.x) the previous phone version (3.x HoneyComb was tablet only). ICS brings a slicker, darker, and better looking user interface, as well as many performance enhancements. Most of us want it more because it seems like we should than because it is actually that much better. That said it is still a great update, and most people will be happy to see it.
Click to collapse
Q: Why is it so hard to get ICS for our phone, while others have it even though it is not officially out?
The main reason is our locked bootloader. That means it is not possible to flash or boot a custom kernel unless it is signed with Motorola's key. That is obviously impossible.
Click to collapse
Q: What is a kernel?
the kernel is a major part of any operating system. you can think of it as a sort of layer between hardware and software. It is the part of an OS that communicates directly with a device's hardware. Android is based off the open source Linux kernel, meaning it is free for anybody to build and modify. However, Motorola has only released the source for the ME865, and partially for the MB865, meaning we can't really build a kernel anyways. Then of course, even if we could build one, we wouldn't be able to boot it with our locked bootloader.
ICS is not really complete without the newer kernel that goes with it

What is Kexec, and is there any way to unlock the bootloader
The fact that I grouped these together would probably lead you to correctly believe they are related. Lets start with the second half. Simply put, NO. I hate to say it, but there is very little hope of EVER unlocking our bootloader, unless Motorola decides to do something like HTC did and allow unlocking.
Kexec is a method of hot switching kernels while still booted. It is actually just a linux tool that you can use on a computer, but it has been built for android essentially allowing you to bypass the bootloader. Theoretically it would be an easy way to run custom kernels. Then why don't we? Well a few reasons. One, we can't really get one built to begin with, especially because, at least to my knowledge, jimbridgman is the only one who actually knows what he is doing with kernel building, and he is only half here now that he got his fany new SGS3. Two, it does not work great. I am not sure the latest version is working at all on our phone, and even if it did, only one processor comes up, meaning it is really slow.
Click to collapse
Q: What's the deal with these Droid 3 builds that supposedly boot?
Some people managed to build ICS for the droid 3 based of a 2.3.6 kernel. that means you can boot it on a stock GB kernel, and therefore you do not need to unlock the bootloader. Unfortunately that means it is not totally ICS, but it is still pretty good. Of course they are for a cdma phone, so that means no data, no calls, and no gps, making it kind of useless.
I am not going to give a link to them, but if you are really interested go search around. any of the Droid 3 AOKP and CM9 builds will boot just fine. Find more info in the dev section, but please don't start a thread asking about it.
We have been trying to port these to work for us, but that is proving more difficult than expected, and with ICS just around the corner, I don't want to put time into it. I do think it is possible, and if you are a dev looking to give it a shot, PM me and I will tell you all I know, and try to help out as much as I can.

Agreed, They actually run extremely well, but obviously I can't stick with them with no radio.
P.S. this is my new best thought for porting, might take some extra build.prop work too. It did not boot for me, but I think we should be able to get it to. Then it is just a question of whether or not the radio will work. there is way more in build.prop on that than I would think.

I think it may work because it really adds the cm9 stuff to our own files rather than add our files to it. maybe not the cleanest way, but it might just work.

Hi, I am looking for a FEW people to test out some ICS ROMS and report bugs to me. I would like only those who are at least a bit experienced, so that you know what you are doing, but if you are interested please reply here and I will send you a PM if I need you. Please don't flood my inbox with PMs.
Getting a few of you devs would be nice, since you really know what you are talking about.
Thanks

I'm game. My girlfriend is using her upgraded A2 from the ATRIX 4G she was using before, so I can give her back the original ATRIX 4G and test on her A2... thus, keeping MY A2 as my primary device.
(I may have to buy her some flowers to complete the deal!) lol

I would love to help , I'm not a dev but I do have some experience with android , likely will be able to flash the fxz if things go wrong
I'm up for testing What are your builds based off of? I've found that I like the AOKP Bionic ones best, in terms of performance and compatibility.
What modifications have you done to them?

all it is for now is the droid 3 aokp and ics builds with modified build.props, just trying to get things out here. Dorid 4 and RAZR builds don't wan't to work for me, I have not tried bionic yet. the droid 3 aokp that I used in my most recent build will not boot, but that may be my fault with the mods, but other ones have worked. known issues so far are no sdcard in cm9, no wifi in cm9, and duh, no radio anwhere.
I'm Game!
I'll try it:cyclops:!
Anyone can feel free to download any builds I put up here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/Motorola_ATRIX_2_Developers/lkrasner/ (in subfolders mostly, so look around as I add more.)
Do not expect them to even boot, and it is not even remotely my problem if something goes wrong with them. make sure you know how to fxz back. Right now CM9 boots, but I do not think AOKP does, you can give it a shot though. Please hold off on bug reports for now, or PM them to me, as I will set up a thread in the dev section later or tomorrow.

I'll help out in getting a working rom however I can, based on your experimental builds you have so far. I think I have a semi-advanced enough knowledge base to test and/or any building.prop changes if need to be tried out... Eager to dig in to this!

I'll test them tonight when i get off of work. I'll pm you in a few days with some reports. I might just have to take a vacation day off of work so i can test them out.

Lkrasner I will pm you as soon as I get some free time and compare notes if you want. I will also send you s modified build.prop for AOSP that I modified with a lot of our build.prop and the cdma files removed that does boot.
I still have a few more ideas to try but the more heads in this the better we will be

ICS Update Leak Info

Well the time has come!!
We have ICS for the AT&T model. Here is the info about it. More to come
1. Yes, it is ICS from a leak on one of the servers, thank you cheesecake
2. Huge thanks to leifemagnuson, he gets the credit for finding this, but asked me to take it over.
3. huge thanks to jimbridgman for tearing this apart and generally being awesome at everything
4. Once applying, you can downgrade to GB by FXZ just as before.
5. Jim is making us a flashable zip with the update that includes root.
6. anyone can install that as long as they are totally stock 2.3.6
7. I will build a simple rom based off it, and then maybe more later.
8. Yes, the bootloader is still locked in this
I will add links and stuff later hen we get things under control.
GREAT NEWS! Can't wait for the zip!! Love all ya guys!!!
Thanks a lot to all of you for the time and work you put on this, this is the kind of stuff that makes me proud to be a member of this forum and push me every day to contribute with anything I can.

How stable is this leak? I would like to put it on my Dad's Atrix II, but only if it's stable and mostly bug free, he's not a techie like me

Thanks, I thought maybe if it was final enough, but I think I will wait.
So you can't be on a custom ROM and flash this? I'm ON 2.3.6

Things I have learned with this update.
1) You MUST be 100% stock, with root before attempting the update, and even then, just wait and do the rooting after the ICS update.
the reason is because the update even checks the sum for the logcat program, which we use to hijack boot for the CWM recovery. I was completely stock 2.3.6 with bootstrap CWM on boot and root, and it would still not update.
2) Use RSDlite for the stock restore, as any scripts tend to do something funny when restoring boot, the ONLY way I got the update to take was to use RSDlite. I tried my scripts and I also tried a few others and it still did not work.
3) As has already been reported, cheesecake does not work on ICS, so you are pretty much stuck here.
4) Do not try to download the update and flash with CWM! Sorry but it will not work, it must be done with the stock recovery.
I am sure there is more, and time comes I will add to this.
Does it have any special features? Anything different from the usual, don't know if you could write a changelog. Sorry if it's too much.

[Q] Leak 1 or Official ICS??

This is for those that have ran both. Have you noticed any significant differences in the two, aside from being able to flash back? My wife has been rooted stock GB and hates changes and wondering if I would be better putting her on the first leak or allowing the upgrade. I ran SCV7 before switching to my SGS3 and found no problems with it. Having never used the second leak, would like some feedback from those that may have ran both. Thanks
Bump.....
The second leak(official) is more stable with less bugs. I have gotten better battery life as well.

What about the FXZ dilemma, is that being resolved with the 2nd leak? I know tcf38012 has posted something, but it's rather cryptic and not very comprehensible...

It is not an fxz fix. It will only un-softbrick people who softbricked on leak 2.

So there's still something to consider. ICSL2 has no way back to GB, whereas ICSL1 does. For whatever that's worth to help the OP. Thanks Jim...

Not too worried about being able to go back for her phone. Once ICS is installed and rooted, she'll be happy. Just curious if there are any significant "improvements" between the 2 versions.

Battery is a lot better, phone becomes more responsive, many have reported they are getting better graphics.
If you are not into shuffling between ROMs or tweaking i say go for the OTA you won't regret it.

I too have the same question, is it smarter to just stay on leak 1, i do like flashing roms and tweaking. Is it going to be that much harder to get custom roms if we have the official OTA version?

Well it's not that it's going to be hard it's just that if you run into some trouble you can always fxz your way back but with leak 2 that it's not the option as there is no fxz for ICS as of now.however recently a few people(including me) have been able to recover from a soft brick on leak2.so really it's a matter upto you.you know the risks and the upside.

Why not stay on leak 1 and just flash one of the roms with leak #2 system? That way you get the best of both worlds.
No way in hell will i give up my option to get back to GB if needed.

Totally agree with you. Until there's an FXZ for leak2/official OTA, I'll stay on leak one and flash away. I've already had to use the 2.3.6 FXZ and it worked perfectly.
going to bump this thread if its ok. Now that Official ICS has been out and running for a bit, what are your thoughts on it versus the original leak.

Just keep in mind that some phones had some strange issues after the ICS OTA, and were only corrected by doing a FDR.
