[Q] ICS questions and OTA update enforcement worries

I own an EEE PAD Transformer TF101 and its got the 8.6.5.21(WW) firmware and I rooted it via Nachoroot and have installed CWM to be able to make full system backups/restores.
Now in the one hand I'm elated a new Android version called ICS is coming soon but have a couple of 'fears' and questions.
-Will the Tegra2 inside the TF101 run ICS just as smooth as Honeycomb ?
-I want to choose the moment ICS gets updated myself and I hate being forced by OTA but am I right that with Nachoroot and CWM installed it won't work anyways so no fears for that ?
-In that case I still keep getting OTA notifications I guess. Is here a tool to switch that off ?
Would it be wise to use OTA Keeper to backup my root or has OTA Keeper got any drawbacks ?
I bet ICS will at first not be rootable anyways right ?

Correct. A rooted device most likely will have OTA disabled. To confirm, just go into Settings -> About Tablet and if you see a Check for System Update link, then OTA is probably still enabled. You may have to put a rebuilt Rom like Krakd or Prime 2.11 to have OTA disabled.
I think that Root will come fairly quickly for ICS considering the Source has been released for a long while. So the guys who look for those root exploits probably already have a nice stash lined up for when devices receive their updates.
Tegra 2 is plenty powerful enough to run ICS, that combined with the amount of Ram you shouldn't be to worried about that.
If you want...hop over to the Development threads and grab the latest ICS port from Paul Burton. That way you can check it out and see how you feel about ICS. Note: Paul's build are still considered early and some things may not work as you want, but that doesn't mean they won't work at all once Asus pushes out the official build or when Paul finishes up his port.

if you do flash paul's ROM please ask any questions in this thread HERE, and not in the dev thread. Also, be sure to read everything before flashing. It isn't quite complete and you will want to go back to HC after you flash.

I checked and the update link still works and I'm sure I will still get OTA notifications
One good thing is that I noticed that since the RESCUE partition is replaced with CWM that OTA will fail when it reboots into rescue mode to install the update.
I am not keen on installing these ROMS that you mentioned since I don't know what is removed etc. compared to the original roms.
I was thinking this:

Dont screw with the system its just not good news!!!!!!
If you have cwm recovery ota will check and you will know when ics arrives but it wont install because of the custom recovery not because of root as stated above.

So finally the blaze has been confirmed along with others to get ICS which I knew would and am glad I haven't messed around with root or anything else so the update works and makes this phone even better!

Rooting shouldn't affect the process of updating or the update itself.
Anyway, I'm glad to see that this is happening.

I was under the impression if you changed the kernel you wouldn't receive OTA updates. The process is reversible, but just saying.
That being said, I'll continue my streak, and bet you $10 we don't see ICS from Samsung within the next 3 months.
Oh yeah, I forgot..... this may not be the case anymore, but I remember back in the 2.1-2.2 days that people were always looking for someone that had a phone on 2.1 that received the OTA update to 2.2 to not install it until they had a log thingamajiggie running, as it helped people do their magic with the official rom.
I'm no wizard but if this is desirable to anyone who wants to work on roms for this phone whenever they decide to push ICS to us, lemme know, and lemme know how to do it.

I had to unroot and restore everything to get the ota 2.2 update to work back when I had my Motorola...

This needs to be done BEFORE you run the update.
File should be in the /cache partition.

I ws at work today with no WiFi on, and when I pulled the phone out of my pocket this update had already applied itself. I have knock knock on so that could have allowed my nether regions to authorize the update. Anywho, if I can still safely use lg flash tool to go back to 80010d then I can flash back and see if the server will push 10q again. Nothing in stone but it be nice to have some clue from someone with greater understanding if i can flash back to 10d without creating problems from this new update. The AT&T variants have Carrier IQ installed. Is it possible LG is aware of my flashing back and forth from Cymod to stock and forced the update without a prerequisite consent toast popup?

you can certainly downgrade back to 10d using LG Flash without causing issues. That may not ALWAYS be the case with future OTA updates but LG has not yet enforced "anti-rollback"
As for the update being installed.. I have read that you can only delay the update install so many times.. but after a certain amount of time the update is forced. Now I've only read this and can't say from first hand experience.. but maybe thats what happened to you. If that is the case and updates are being forced after a set time.. the only way to get around the update would be to freeze or remove the apk responsible for updates.. not even sure which apk is responsible offhand.

Thanks for that. The responses in your link indicate they were not asked permission explicitly to apply the update. The fact that this, "paves the way for future updates," worries me that the bootloader has changed. I can confirm the radio has not. I work odd hours. When I'm off in the AM I'll see if i can't warm up LG Flash Tools and revert to 10d from download mode. If so I'll see whats up with root and pulling the update. Considering multiple sources are stating there was no confirmation it gives me a hunch this may have something to do with patching loki exoloit, though I have no emperical evidence of prior statement.

Not being a deepweb database expert I wonder if this might allow the update to be retrieved directly from LG.

nope just notifies LG service centers whats newly available.

Was running stock. Used LGFlashTool to go back to 10d and 10o and can't get the server to push the update even after trying to check for it from both cellular data and several different IP's while on WiFi. No dice. Software update 10q simply hasn't come to me yet. Out of time and energy at the moment. Sorry.

This update put my phone into a recovery loop and was unusable. I finally got it back to stock and about 48 hours later it just updated itself . There is barely any warning, a box pops up saying its updating and it does it! I dont like this at all ,any update should require some kind of approval from the user . But at least my phone runs great now!

Anyone with new "q" update....can you confirm that root works? I got stuck in bootloop when it installed and ended up restoring nandroid backup before I fixed it so i'm still on "o" for now.

The other afternoon I was busy pecking away at my laptop with my phone on the charger. All of the sudden my phone has the pretty blue sky over a green, grassy field and it's updating! I did not have the device on WiFi and I did not confirm this update. This update is being forced upon us AT&T users without any confirmation. I suppose it's small size and their over confidence in SHA/CRC checks make them think installing an update loaded over a cellular connection is a good idea. Heck, at least this is rumored to be paving the way for some official form of KitKat. The folks that work on this phone and produce such things as Cyanogenmod and other Android Remixes are amazing! I simply like the clip tray, knock-knock, my back LED working and better bench numbers to much to be swayed from stock. That is just my preference. Y'all still rock chicks off socks with the "ROMs"!

Not sure if this helps at all...
I had this update (d80010q) installed and tried to root (for the first time). I was unable to. Superuser was transferred, but did not have root access. Looks like I may have to downgrade before rooting. Is this correct? Thanks!

Can anyone provide tot for the d80010q

I can attest to not being able root my G2 with D80010q on it. Hop4efully a fix soon?

I have Lg G2 (Att) & hours b4 I have reflash'd back 2 stock and applied root about an hour later i got OTA so I click'd 2 recieve OTA it came back sayin Cant download OTA on rooted device if that helps and thatt was almost 24\hrs ago n still runnin smoothly but file was only like 16MB

d80010o isnt part of the command. it starts at "adb"

I got this update few days ago.. I was rooted on "d", it went to "o" after i postponed it 4 times, and it went to "q" automatically without asking.
I use pattern as my screen lock, at random times, phone will reboot from AT&T logo.. it's very annoying, and i'm not sure what to do about it.. I can go back to "d" but ATT will eventually update it.

Anyone get TWRP to install after root on this? I used FreeGee with mine. Says installed successfully, but TWRP app is nowhere to be found.
Also, Root Browser never asks for SU access, as the other root apps do, and the apps I can supposedly safely remove are not in the /system/app folder. Very confused now.

Root. Checker and terminal emulater both show me to have root access.
However root explorer doesn't show any of the apps that are supposed to be safe to remove, and it never asks for su permission like the other root apps do.
Also there is no/ system/apps folder. There is only/ system/app. Are these folders hidden somehow?

My phone tried to install this automatically with root the other day, and soft-bricked... Had to delete the files via adb and got back in relatively scot-free. Anyway apparently there is actually a 4.4 update being pushed right now for the d800. I would go for it but I am still rooted and would like to keep my root... And am also waiting for Aospa so I may let it settle before I jump in

the right way to get it without flashing is to wait patiently until it decides to go to your phone or constantly nag your carrier to give you the update or you will leave them for a better company instead of asking a question that has been asked a billion times and the post are all over the place but you can't take to the time to search for them and read

New update. NJ4 4.4.4

I'm currently on NI1, and I just had a update notice. It's about 392mb in size. Didn't see anything about any updates so figured I'd post.

Did you take the update? Did it install? If so what is the firmware listed as?
Since it is 392mb I would assume it is an update, rather than a full version increment? Probably still 4.4.2 Let is know

It's almost done downloading now at 81%. I'll post back with a version once installed.

Are you rooted right now? If so it may not install, or try and fail. If you are rooted immediately after it finishes downloading you can copy the update file to your sdcard/external sdcard and upload it to a file sharing site. If it is in fact a newer version of firmware you could make devs happy. If you need to know how/where the update is located I can help you out
BEFORE IT INSTALLS open up a file browser (if rooted possibly) and navigate to \cache\fota\2400258.cfg. Should be the name or something similar. Long press on it and choose copy. Then navigate to you sdcard and paste it where you can find it. Then upload it to a sharing site.

Not rooted on this S4. The update went through and it was updated to NJ1 4.4.4

Yeah. Been having random issues with my phone since the previous. All seems to be good now. The update does add a few new programa. Nothing worth using except maybe keeper. But so far so good.
Phones definitely a lot snappier now.!

I would love to see a screenshot of the about to confirm.

Update failed on my rooted device
I just tried it, It failed to update and I lost root.

Here is a screen of the few apps it put on once completed. It also added a kids mode app.

If ANYBODY is rooted it most likely WILL FAIL. It is only 300+ MB sobitbis not a complete ROM and most like just has mostly PATCH files inside. I would recommend users that are rooted WAIT until a dev can do something with it, and check it out. Each update has locked our phones down harder.
On that note if ANYONE is rooted and downloads it, do NOT install it. But go to the location I listed above to pull the file from the phone and upload it to a sharing site. Then a dev can look into it first and incorporate it for our rooted phones WITHOUT updating the bootloader

After looking around the forums it looks like Samsung has pushed a few updates to phones ( S4 getting 4.4.4, S3 4.4.2 patch files, and the Note has gotten an update as well). I think these updates are probably going to be the final updates before they phase out old devices and possibly start porting 5.0 on our device (S4). I really wish there wasn't new At&t bloat, but hopefully these are new services that phase out all the old outdated bloat At&t had in the past :good: also to each his own I just never use those apps.

If no one else does, I will try when I get to work tomorrow. We have numerous S4's that people traded in for the S5. I can see if I am able to root one and do the update using your instructions. If not I can check to see if onw of our Kiosks can allow me to pull the update. Not sure if they have that one yet for self updating. Will let you know in the AM.

Wish I had read this before. I am rooted so it said install interrupted after download. So do I have to unroot and return to stock? I am on NI1 4.4.2. Maybe you or someone can get copy for us to install it by. Let us know what to do if rooted to get the OTA. Thanks

Downloading now. I'll post when done. Rolled back to NB1 before updating so this is a 489MB download.

Guess I will roll back to NB1 also Friday. Got NB1 downloading now. Do I need to wipe or Anything before I flash file in Odin 3.09????
