[Q] ICS questions and OTA update enforcement worries - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I own an EEE PAD Transformer TF101 and its got the 8.6.5.21(WW) firmware and I rooted it via Nachoroot and have installed CWM to be able to make full system backups/restores.
Now in the one hand I'm elated a new Android version called ICS is coming soon but have a couple of 'fears' and questions.
-Will the Tegra2 inside the TF101 run ICS just as smooth as Honeycomb ?
-I want to choose the moment ICS gets updated myself and I hate being forced by OTA but am I right that with Nachoroot and CWM installed it won't work anyways so no fears for that ?
-In that case I still keep getting OTA notifications I guess. Is here a tool to switch that off ?
Would it be wise to use OTA Keeper to backup my root or has OTA Keeper got any drawbacks ?
I bet ICS will at first not be rootable anyways right ?

Correct. A rooted device most likely will have OTA disabled. To confirm, just go into Settings -> About Tablet and if you see a Check for System Update link, then OTA is probably still enabled. You may have to put a rebuilt Rom like Krakd or Prime 2.11 to have OTA disabled.
I think that Root will come fairly quickly for ICS considering the Source has been released for a long while. So the guys who look for those root exploits probably already have a nice stash lined up for when devices receive their updates.
Tegra 2 is plenty powerful enough to run ICS, that combined with the amount of Ram you shouldn't be to worried about that.
If you want...hop over to the Development threads and grab the latest ICS port from Paul Burton. That way you can check it out and see how you feel about ICS. Note: Paul's build are still considered early and some things may not work as you want, but that doesn't mean they won't work at all once Asus pushes out the official build or when Paul finishes up his port.

if you do flash paul's ROM please ask any questions in this thread HERE, and not in the dev thread. Also, be sure to read everything before flashing. It isn't quite complete and you will want to go back to HC after you flash.

I checked and the update link still works and I'm sure I will still get OTA notifications
One good thing is that I noticed that since the RESCUE partition is replaced with CWM that OTA will fail when it reboots into rescue mode to install the update.
I am not keen on installing these ROMS that you mentioned since I don't know what is removed etc. compared to the original roms.
I was thinking this:
since I have root access isn't there a way to remove the OTA update service from starting up by using "terminal emulator" from the Android Market and edit the config file or directory where the OTA update notification service gets started ? Anyone knows if this is possible and how ?
I moved /system/UpdateLauncher.apk and Updatelauncher.odex into another map but that didn't stop the notifications and renaming ota.certs isnt wise since the new firmware update file will keep downloading again and again.

Dont screw with the system its just not good news!!!!!!
If you have cwm recovery ota will check and you will know when ics arrives but it wont install because of the custom recovery not because of root as stated above.

[Q] How to downgrade firmware

Can someone please tell me how to go back from .13 to .9 so I can root my TF please? So far I haven't found anything telling me how, just telling me it can be done. I got the old OFW from asus's website and moved it to the root of my SD card and tried a reload but still keeps loading .13 after the wipe.
So can someone tell me how or what I am doing wrong?
Just extract the contents of the .9 OFW into the root of your MicroSD, pop it in the Transformer and it should prompt you to update.

Would you consider giving the revolver ROM a try? I downgraded from 1.3.1 beta(ICS) to 3.11(HC).
I am fairly certain Asus like most device manufacturers try to keep you from being able to downgrade from official OEM versions of software back to older versions- the reason being, of course, that the newer versions sometimes fix software and security vulnerabilities (like 8.6.5.21 losing the ability to use an APK file to root, like razorclaw, and imagine a rogue application exploiting this vulnerability, achieving root, and broadcasting to the developer any information without notifying you about it..). The interesting thing is that the method of denying firmware 'updates' to downgrade seems to be arithmetically calculated from the version numbers, basically if update package version is < current version update will be denied. However, when they decided to engineer the update denial this way, it left it's own vulnerability, in that firmwares for the TF101G, being the later model of the TF101, automatically have a higher firmware version because of the 3rd digit is a 6 instead of a 5, indicating that the version is for TF101G. This left the old honeycomb ROMs with this vulnerability- if you had updated to 8.6.5.21, you were still able to 'update' to an older firmware the device viewed as 'newer' than the current device firmware, i.e. 8.6.5.21 users could update from a stock device to downgrade their firmware using the TF101G firmware 8.6.6.19, which could still be rooted with the APK vulnerability.
Now that we have moved onto ICS and there is not yet a TF101G version of ICS available, we lack this native downgrade option, and we are yet to see if Asus is going to fix this 'vulnerability' by simply amending the TF101G and TF101 version numbers, or by altering the way in which the OEM recovery mode accepts or rejects Asus update packages, I have the feeling that they already have with the 9.2.1.11 update recovery that was included.
All of the precursor information I just listed brings me to the only current method known to rollback your firmware if you are on ICS, either 9.2.1.17 or 9.2.1.11..you must root your device with ViperMOD, install CWM via RecoveryInstaller, and use CWM to manually install the firmware to a previous version. This will perhaps add a few layers of complexity..you may have to toggle signature verification and script asserts enabled (I am making a wild guess on this one, I've not yet tried to downgrade just yet), and you will be persistently bothered by Asus update notifications (there are plenty of threads describing how to rid yourself of these). My guess is that soon Asus will begin pulling the HC ROMs from their official website so you might want to grab that ASAP. And if you want to keep from getting bothered by update notifications yet stay stock 100%, you can (until they release the ICS for it) flash the TF101G version of the firmware, 8.6.6.21.
IN SUMMARY; to downgrade ICS to HC, you will have to root and flash recovery modes. There doesn't seem to be a way around it. And IMO it's probably best to NVFlash back to HC, no telling what kind of data will be left that will conflict with HC from ICS if you do simply flash a HC ROM via CWM. You will probably want to make sure you have the right kernel just in case you have to flash it as well..I can imagine a nightmare scenario if the Asus update didn't include a kernel that it leaves your ICS kernel intact, which will not load HC, and also flashes over your recovery, leaving you pretty much bricked without NVFlash. Fairly sure Asus update contain the full ROM- kernel included, but I always err on the side of caution..I'd flash the HC kernel first personally..just to be safe. If nightmare scenario does occur, you can't flash it after you reboot.

I had the revolver rom before- with my last transformer.- But ICS - if working, -is better.- and best seems to me: revolver rom ics based on a (good working !!) stockrom.
Meanwhile i rooted the transformer and install CWM - tried stockrom flashing with CWM- but because of usb is not working+ random reeboots, i changed to revolver ics- Revolver ics had a working usb connection (also random reboots- - and today a freeze while booting) .
I trie to find out the reason for the reboots.
I only go back to HC if there are too much problems with this rom - by i had to trie out first.

Help pls - Root vs Forced Update

Hi everyone,
I'm running a rooted Transformer HC 3.1 and Netformer overclocking kernel.
Today I got an OTA update notification, and the update is already downloaded on my TF. I have chosen to postpone the update since I know it will fail, but I can only do this 3 times.
Questions:
1. Is there a way to cancel the update completely at this point?
2. If I let it try to update I know it will fail, but will the device still be usable normally i.e. exactly like before the attempted update?
3. Is there a way to unroot the TF without wiping the data? I would hate to have to set everything up again.
Thanks for your quick help, it seems that I don't have much time before the forced update.
I'm rooted also,if you go to this thread here and read it from front to back,i think you will find your answer... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171116
I'm gonna wait for a bigger update or a rooted version of this update.

I don't think anyone mentioned being able to cancel the update though. Perhaps deleting the downoaded installation file would help, I might try just that...

[Q] OTA after root possible?

Yes and no. If you stick with a stock ROM, you'll be able to download the OTAs/get notified about them. However, if you use ClockworkMod Recovery (which you really should) you won't be able to install the OTA. Well, it'll try but, it'll fail. The best bet is to be patient and one of the devs will release their versions of the new ROM.

It might depend which method you used to root, but I doubt it. I did the rooting via the 'pure root' method and I receive the notifications.
Since I just backed up after updating to 8.5.5.6, I decided to see what happened if I clicked on the upgrade nag notification, and all it did was say that it cancelled it, and does not nag me now.
I have no clue if it'll do the same for everyone. We all follow a lot of paths to generally the same place in rooting, so not sure. I did have an HTC incredible actually unroot itself via an update notification, so I removed the OTA Certification services.
Well, thanks to both of you for the clarification!
Additional question: after rooting, when I want to install an update, would it be possible to unroot and then install the update?

Yes. Just go into /system/app/ and delete superuser.apk. Just note that when you have root, you can't change a lot of the system files otherwise there will be problems with the OTA.
I would personally just rock custom ROMs. They get updated fast to the latest OTA. But that's just me.

[Q] Iconia A500 3.2.1 ota downgrade

Hey all have a wifi Iconia A500 stock ota 3.2.1 wondering is it safe to downgrade using method two as posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227

Did you have 3.2.1 installed or 3.2? Mainly was hoping to use method 2 as it seems more noob proof. Tottaly new to android and dont really get the gist of custom firmware yet. I thought with method 2 their would be less chance of something going wrong.
i had 3.2
i used the following soft: EUUs_SBK_Acer_A501_0.017.01_PA_ATT.exe
i just edit config in the remp folder. i changed uid and model from 501 to 500
Today i bit the bullet and tried method 2 all went smooth no issue now running thors rom on rooted iconia edit note I was on default acer australia rom 3.2.1
ok so after playing with custom roms for full day and not finding one I liked more than the stock I decided to return to stock. I got it done from the 3.2 ota rom from the developer section. Just wondering if I have to do anything else to receive ota updates again. I have used the check for update feature but it says I'm up to date when I know there is a 3.2.1 update available as I had it before I installed the custom from. Is it just a matter of waiting for it?
Anyone here or anywhere else on the web been able to get hold of the stock
3.2.1 update to sideload the update?
ok after spending most of the day reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 and trying to digest all the info gee major brain scrammble looks like I will no longer receive ota updates. My bad should have spent more time reading instead of jumping in head first. So now I can either wait for ota updates to be posted here and manually update or go back to custom roms full time. So looks like I will be going with option 2 I found a thread here that ics is in the works so don't feel so bad bout my major stuff up. Out of interest will Acer restore defaults for a price?
Back to stock and getting ota updates see my post on page 25 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155664
Hi bulcmal, you seem to know how to solve my question:
I own a new ICONIA A500 and after a few moment with it I updated to 3.2 without reading about it and knowing that has a lot of bugs. Now I want to go back to OTA 3.1 so my question is next one:
After I use the second method presented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1276227
Can I update to 3.1 freely (using the update function on the settings).
Thanks a lot.
Method 2 downgrade and you have the right room for your country I don't see why it wouldn't work. After you downgrade when it reboots you will get lots of force close don't panic its fine, then shutdown tablet complete remove your micro sd card delete the downgrade rom and copy the stock rom to the sd card( I just used a cheap card reader for this) then reboot while holding down volume button on left side and power button keap holding till small white text appears in upper left of tablet screen. On a side note its very important to test unzip both updates (the downgrade rom and the stock rom) to be sure they are not corrupt if the process fails to unzip either update you could brick your tab. Also both roms will be called update. Zip don't unzip files any further than this other than to test that they can be unzipped without issues. I take no responsibility if things go pear shaped just describing what I did.

I wouldn't risk updating from the settings menu the downgrade rom is very unstable and you may get errors see post above cheers.
Hi, I read the post above and have two more questions:
First:
I bought the tablet on Amazon US. How do I know which rom do I need?
And second:
After I flash the stock rom, the OTA updates will be available?
I am new to this flashing thing so bare with me if my questions are a bit stupid.
Thanks a lot.
Do you think this will work with a USB storage?

I dont know wich stock rom you would need Usally you would search for the rom based on what country you are in. But seeing as you imported it I dont know how it would work. On the other hand if you got ota updates in your country perhaps it is now running your countries firmware. I succesfully got ota updates after doing this.

??? Do you mean can you use usb storage to do the downgrade and the installation of the stock rom? If so I think it only works from the micro sd card slot.
Also guys the 3.2.1 update is currently being rolled out if you dont need root you could always wait for that update it may also fix your issues cheers
how long has the 3.2.1 update been rolling out? still stuck on 3.2 here in melbourne. I got the tablet a week ago and it updated only up to 3.2.
I originally got it early-mid november, then acer pulled the update. It was re released about 2 weeks ago. I am still waiting for it to come back to.
ok, thought i was being left behind. guess i have to be patient lol

A700 OTA update question

Hi, what will be effect of accepting an ota update once one becomes available if you are rooted/boot loader unlocked. Will root be lost, and will the boot loader re lock? Would a program like root keeper be able to keep root?
Sent from my A700 using xda premium
In prior experiences on other devices it was usually one of two things:
The update would go thru and overwrite your unlock and/or root and you'd have to start over.
Or the update wouldn't go thru since you have a modified system.
I'm sure we'll know the answer to this question soon enough.
Thanks for your reply.
In theory, this would depend on what type of update is pushed.
In some cases of a "patch" update, more than likely root and CWM would be kept.
If it's a full update, then probably it might include a bootloader.blob and a recovery update.
There's no real way of telling, unless you know what the update contains. Typically, a small update (10-20mb) is just some sort of a patch update. Anything larger (100mb) would probably overwrite your root and bootloader.
Not sure if there is an option to "download but not install". Then you could check your SD and see exactly what's in the update file.
It's common for some Devs to grab an update, and not reboot till they copy the update file.
MD
Thanks for your reply, if a full update is pushed in essence the tablet would go back to stock. Would Root keeper keep root in this instance? and if it did would we then have to unlock the boot loader again to install custom recovery and roms once they are available?

I would suspect "root keeper" would probably not work in this case. The issue, as I have see since version 3.1 HC on the Iconia a501, is that with each update, there must be newer methods developed in order to attain root. And Acer, although they did a good thing and allowed Fastboot OEM Unlock, they just keep making things more difficult with each version they put out.
And now with the 700 series, where it seems the bootloader version is matched to the version Rom,. who knows?
But with the bootloader, all full update roms generally come with a newer version bootloader. So it would be overwritten. But, once a reliable recovery is working, hopefully we'll be able to install custom roms. This remains to be seen.
MD
Being that I'm fairly new to Acer tablets and that this is just out for a short time, in you opinion do you feel that there will be decent development of roms? I came from a Transformer Prime and even thou the Prime was plagued with multiple issues, it still had numerous roms developed in a short time. I think the first from was put out as soon as the Prime was unlocked. Don't get me wrong I have no issues with the A700 and love the tablet, but am concerned that the A700 may be overlooked as far as development is concerned. New roms open up a whole new world for the user and put the tablet at a whole new level. Thanks
Sent from my A700 using xda premium
In my opinion I'm not sure. The A510 has been out awhile and isn't exactly taking off in the development area. The A700 does bring in a new era of Full HD tablets which may attract some attention. While it's being overshadowed by Infinity & Nexus, and the reviews from users and tech websites haven't been too welcoming honestly. There is a lot of turnoff due to the heat issues, and the un-optimization of the Tegra chip and ICS (Since the TF700 has its share of lag issues, with a supposed faster processor) although the 1.028 ROM seems to have leveled off some of the heat issue on my tablet (Placebo? would like confirmation from other users). If your just a regular user then the A700 will be fine, no problem. If you like to tweak your devices then you may be in the wrong area.... Over in the Asus TF700 they are completely chomping at the bit for its release and will have a extremely high level of development when it comes out. The Asus line of tablets has a very strong following..... While I really like my tablet I will keep an eye on the Asus although I cant get over the horrid speaker placement in the back.....I just can't.
I do hope that people such as Moscow Desire and ZeroNull will take the time to fully unlock this tablets potential.
I hear what your saying, I'm feeling the same way, have not seen much development in the A510. I enjoy using the A700 but would like to see more of its potential opened. Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, have a good working rooted/boot loader unlocked tablet with possibly not much development and not knowing where it will go from here. I know the problem I had with the transformer prime in getting a decent working tablet, and am concerned that the Asus Infinity mat have the same issues as the Prime. I am one that like to install new roms and tinker with the tablet so don't know what to do.
Hello,
I searched for the answer of my question but could not find it.
What have I to do before I can update a rooted A700.
If I try to update with the OTA: Acer_A700_AV043.RV07RC06_EMEA_DE and it sais that it didn't work. As mentioned in some posts above.
What should be my next steps?
cheers.

That doesn't work. I removed root, the update still fails. I guess that the unlocked bootloader is the problem.
I didn't have root because method 1 from ZeroNull wasn't working and the risk of something going wrong with method 2 was too high so my device only had an unlocked bootloader. It installed the two updates from Acer just fine, re-locking the bootloader in the process.
You probably flashed your boot ROM?
I used method 2 since 1 didn't work for me, right.
yep temp unroot in su doesn't work at this point in time, probably because of lack of system r/w access among other possible reasons.
I'm stuck on stock rooted, update fails. i used the cwm file to get rooted as neither method 1 or 2 worked.
any ideas how to get the update working

you don't have a german firmware so it fails when the version is checked.
So you need to use an update matching your firmware at first.
---------- Post added at 11:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:52 AM ----------
As I got my hands on most of the recent A700 updates, all have a recovery update included, so root will be lost.
In theory this could be removed from it, but can't be sure if the update need a new recovery or not.
