Xoom Family edition ??? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got this thing as it was pretty cheap..
and specs are the same as my regular xoom, but I'm wondering why its so different than the normal xoom in terms of software upgrades and so on.
I was thinking it would have an upgrade for ICS as honeycomb is F-ing HORRIBLE!!!
Is there any thing out there for rooting? roms
or are all the xooms that different ?
Thanks

lol, never mind.. Going to return and keep my regular xoom..
Seems to be a ton of roms and goodies for the normal xoom, and ZERO for the family edition

I got a xoom FE, not realizing the difference until I came to this forum and found out all I could do is root it. I sold it on ebay and got the regular xoom model. By the way, Motorola said they will upgrade the FE to ICS sometime this year.

Yea I read that, but to be honest, the normal xoom IMO has a much better feel to it.. It feels solid and tough
The way a tablet IMO should feel.. Its fast as heck, smooth and has 32gb on board..

I agree with all the above but in my opinion the xoom2 is better build quality and definitely sexier!

Captivate to atrix

As above
I'm getting a straight trade +100~
Would out be worth it? Sounds nice......but.....its locked down and still only on froyo :/
Swyped from my gingerfied captivate
What its a straight trade +100~?
If you are getting atrix plus $100 then there is your answer, but if you are throwing in $100 with your captivate then no its not worth it.

I hava an Atrix and a Captivate. I love both phones. He is right though, its not worth it. I would say that you should wait, hold off a few months and wait for the SGS II. AT&T has a variant coming sometime this year, and with the rollout of their LTE network starting this summer, you have to imagine that the SGS II would be a great canidate to be one of their 1st LTE enabled phones (that's personal opinion, not based on any verified info). Aside from that, the performance differences between the two phones is noticable, but not DRASTIC. Having actual, working GPS is nice, and some of the other features are cool, but honestly I would say wait.

well TBH, I don't really mind about the SoC other than the fact that its a dual and it would be significantly better than the single core that my captivate has.
and I don't live in the states, so I"m not really affected about LTE and such since we don't have LTE or anything where I live.
what I am worried about is the locked bootloader and such cause I can safetly run gingerbread on my captivate, but I won't be able to be on gingerbread once I'm on the atrix and my ROM choices and tweakign and such will be very limited until we can get the bootloader unlocked since motorola is such an ass to lock it.
I'm still debating this....with half of me saying "no" and half of me saying "yes"
does your atrix "feel faster or smoother" compared to the captivate?

Ahh, then yea all the AT&T stuff is kinda irrelevant, lol. The rom choices out there are minimal due to the bootloader encryption, obviously, but there is a HELL of a lot of working going on to fix that. Don't want to speak too soon but we may be close. Khoulk, tenfar, TBH, and a bunch of others are working on it. The Atrix is faster and smoother, yes, but we still don't even have an ETA for Gingerbread.

I would check online to see what the going rate for a used captivate is before offering it up + 100 for the Atrix. Compare that to the price for an off-contract atrix and you'll have your answer as to whether or not its a "fair" trade, value wise. Comparing the two phones to each other depends on how much you value aftermarket development. I'm a hardcore themer and that's why I kept my cappy. I haven't released anything for the Atrix yet, and I've had it almost since launch. I was able to get the Atrix through work at no cost, so it was win-win for me. Hardware wise, it is superior (except for the screen. Super Am. beats out the qhd 960x540 IMO). Development wise, there's no contest. Cappy is on Gingerbread. End of discussion. Its a trade-off either way. That's why I said wait for the SGS II to become available whereever you're at: dev friendly + hardware that is equal to or bettan than the atrix is almost every way. They're both great phones, IMO... but the SGS II is gonna be even better. And some phone that no one knows about that will be announced 2 months from now will be even better than the SGS II, lol.

I definitely wouldn't do it - the Captivate just has so much more to offer with a thriving developer community. The Atrix is supposedly on the verge of being rooted, but it will likely take awhile for things to really boom (and there's no telling when the root will even be successful). I have a few friends with the Atrix, and while it looks to be a decent phone, most complain about battery life and call quality.
I'm no fanboy - I'd jump ship from the Captivate tomorrow if the price was right and hardware/software looked to be legit, but right now the Captivate feels like one of the best possible phones a regular user and geek can have.

The devs have already rooted the phone I think. They are trying to unlock the bootloader.
Don't do it OP. After messing around on an Atrix for awhile, it is a good phone but feels a little finnicky.
A captivate on GB feels a lot smoother than a stock Froyo Atrix IMO.
My opinion you would be paying for a downgrade

I'm digging the front facing camera, the working GPS, and the resolution bump.
The atrix doesn't run as hot when playing games (my backplate used to burn me) or when running GPS and the battery last considerably longer.
What do you do on your phone? If you read more news and the like, the screen is great. If you watch more movies on your phone, then you might like the sammy screen better.
The fingerprint reader is nifty as well.
I am weary of samsung's gps on the infuse and the SGS II so I will steer clear..

In the end it's your decision. The only way you can really go wrong is if you went to the extremely locked down iphone. Enjoy your new atrix my friend.
don't do it! I have a captivate and I just bought an atrix for $300 and was planning on selling my captivate. But after using the atrix for a couple of days I decided to sell the atrix instead. It is just a bad user experience. Mainly because of the screen and the lack of response. Whenever I would use the slider to slide through contacts, it would lose track of my finger and call someone on accident. Also it is an eyesore to look at when you are scrolling.

[Q] Atrix 2 or Lg Nitro

I have an upgrade shortly I was planning on getting the nitro for 100. Then with the announcement of ICS for the Atrix 2 it put me in a knot. I had the og Atrix loved it, the successor would be a good holdout till the 3rd but with the price drop on the Lg im very much considering that . I dont root or use custom roms and a HD screen would be nice but do you think the LG would ever get official ICS from ATT? THis year even if? I as hoping one of you atrix 2 owners could help steer me in the right direction. Sorry 4 wallotext

I am not sure about how good the LG Nitro is as a phone.... I can assure you though that the Atrix 2 is GREAT. Yes it has it's bugs but compared to almost any other cellphone out there it's great. The only cellphone that truly beats the Atrix 2 is the Galaxy Nexus.
And once its overclocked (at least in my benchmarks) the only thing that beats it is the prime.

When i used my upgrade and got my A2 i had looked at the lg nitro. This is what i came up with concerning that phone. It's ugly! Everything about it is ugly. Performance wise it seemed extremely laggy. I wouldn't have that phone if someone gave it to me for a spare phone. Get the A2.

LG really doesn't make very good phones. To be honest with you I'm not even a big fan of Motorola but for the most part I like the Atrix 2, and I think now that Moto is owned by Google, their newer Android offerings may actually end up with a bit of an edge over HTC and Samsung in terms of stock rom performance and moddability soon.

I personally especially agree with that. LG just never made phones that were up to par with all the other manufactures. I haven't used the Nitro before but playing around with the 2 phones at the store would definitely help with your decision. I am extremely happy with my decision with the A2 since my choices were the A2 and SG2 but this phone has exceeded my expectations. With ICS on its way I am even more happy. I know you don't like to use custom ROMs but i think for this phone, using the Supercharged ROMs, which is just a deodexed ROM that is overclocked, makes the phone even better. I love the phone stock but having it overclocked just alittle makes things alittle smoother and having the battery percent mods and notification toggles just make the user experience so much better. If it were my choice i would pick the A2 all over again though.
LG nitro or Atrix 2
I actually sold my Atrix 2 to get the Nitro. I sold my Atrix to get my Atrix 2.
Atrix was a better overall device compared to the Atrix 2.
The Atrix 2 had a slightly better camera. The speakerphone on the Atrix 2 was awful and the OMAP processor made some of my apps not compatible.
The Nitro HD is a better overall device than the Atrix 2. The picture quality is much better w/ flash. Although it is slower the pictures are MUCH better to me. The front facing camera on the HD is higher resolution. The speakerphone on the Nitro blows away the Atrix. The screen is amazing. It looks like a mix between my old captivate screen and the Atrix 2 screen in HD quality.
The LG nitro lacks in a few spots from my experience. Unexplained lags on browsing at times is odd. Sometimes the pages take a long time to load, but not always. Not sure if it's not AT&T throttling data. The battery on this thing goes fast. The only downfall I really am concerned about. I wish we could get an extended battery and upgraded back plate. Something like the RAZ Maxx vs the RAZR. nothing ugly or bulging out, just a flush back.
All in all I am so much happier with this than my Atrix 2. Just wish there was more Dev support and morecustom Roms .
I appreciate the input. Im leaning a little towards the Nitro but im still torn between the 2. I need to just go in the store and take a better look at them next time im there. I actually like the optimus ui though most people arent aware of its actual functionality that many oem launchers dont have. Im more or less debating between hardware and ics.

The best way to find what you like is by looking at them. Feel and aesthetics are always a big part of buying a phone. Compare the i guess 3 phones and see advantages and disadvantages of them and see which disadvantages you can deal with. And if you do care about customizing with ROMs then look at the development of the phones. And while you are at the store play with the UI and all that fun stuff to help out with the decision.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
i've just sold my optimus 3D, that phone has a very annoying bug called "ghost call", it doesnt even work like a normal phone, but LG ignored us, the update process of LG is also the slowest too.
Look at their page on facebook, you will find that LG is a bad brand, people all around the world are complaining about how bad LG products are, but they will never notice.....
I really like the atrix2 but the lack of an HD screen kinda irks me. I kinda feel like it isn't much of an upgrade over the OG. Only thing really stopping me from choosing the nitro 4 sure is the lack of an upgrade to ics announcement from att not lg. Hopefully something leaks out for the nitro by the 30th of march or ill just have to go with the safe purchase more than likely. If I wasn't so impatient I'd just wait for the Ion lol.

I looked at both as well. Nitro had faster processor, HD display, LTE, and the better likelihood of ICS (hadn't been announced for Atrix 2 at the time of my purchase).
But sadly, as others have said, Nitro felt laggy to me when I played with it in the store. SGS II Skyrocket felt much snappier though didn't want it cause lack of HD screen.
Plus Nitro was ~ $200 and Atrix 2 was free! In the end I choose Atrix 2 and haven't regretted it yet! I haven't even done any modding to it - still in completely stock condition. Feels speedy; "4G" has been much better than my old Captivate for browsing, and although no HD screen, it is higher resolution than the typical Android - looks super crisp.
Plus battery life has been phenomenal! Both Skyrocket & Nitro have been blasted because of poor battery life. My Atrix 2 at the end of a 17-18 hour day is still at 60% plus.
Motorola did announce ics for the atrix 2. Its scheduled for Q3 of this year.

G2X or SGSII

what are the prices for them is it craigslist, or literally a new like straight from T-Mobile? Overall in my opinion SGS II or wait for a couple months and get the SGS III, or HTC One S now, I say stay from the G2X cause of lack of support from both parties that put the phone out.

Well the sgs2 is average 350+ and they claim it's "like new" or "used for only one week" which I find hard to believe. and the lg g2x average 200+ and I have a pre paid plan from t mobile and love it so I wouldn't be able to get the sgs3 sadly (that phone looks so sexy ) and yes the HTC one s I could most likely get but the people I've talked to about their sgs2 say the the sgs2 is better (I don't see how ) and they use that as their means for being firm about their price. The GS2 is more expensive, but it's a better investment. It has generally better specs, and the Development looks more promising because of Samsung's support.

If I could go back in time, I would wait a week for the SII. It came out a week right after I got the G2x. Stock, I found the G2x to be nearly unbearable. Rooted with custom ROMs, it's good. Not sure how the development community is for the SII, but I'd still probably pick it over the G2x

Well I guess I'll have to wait xD wish I could sell my stupid Sirius satellite radio and Kyle Yamaha keyboard then I'd have plenty lol thanks all for your comments! Didn't realize the g2x was that bad it actually looked pretty sweet and in terms of development I'd just need a fully working cm7 ROM with data2ext working which takes care of the 512mb issue but I'll wait

I just ordered a gently used G2x on ebay (they go around $200, depending on condition). This is a good value for the specs. The Galaxy S2 is $350+, which gets into a new Galaxy Nexus territory. From what I've researched, custom ROMs like CM7 should be pretty stable and fully functional, most of the problems with the G2x are software anyway. Only hardware issue is the camera dust under cover, which I plan to remedy by putting a clear tape over the LED flash, which I normally don't use anyway.
Also LG already announced ICS for Optimus 2X (international version), it's just delayed again to 3rd quarter, once that is out, one of the major problems with current CM9 ROMs should be resolved (no video acceleration or recording).
Speaking from experience, I have both phones.
GS2 wins for stability, just works, and has a better camera than the LG G2X. But..... personally I'm not thrilled with the GS2 device for the sheer size.
I've used G2X for almost a year. You just have to find a ROM you can live with and make tweaks so that it won't freeze/crash while charging. Other than that, phone is solid. CM7 was best ROM and overall performance. Stock gave best battery but I can't stand STOCK ROMs.
But the biggest reason I really switched to the GS2 was sick of the random crazy battery life and the GPS never working when I need it for emergencies.
I made the mistake of not test driving the GS2 on T-mobile store to get a better feel. Big screen with low resolution is what pisses me off, on top of the fact that the size of the phone isn't friendly to my small hands. If I overlook those two flaws, sure its awesome phone.
Also, the T989 just doesn't have a variety of ROMS available and have to wait for the official release from Tmobile, CM7 isn't reliable for it (I love CM7), and has no CM9 love yet.
I might overlook the negatives I have if Dev for T989 picked up. Until then, it works, reliable, and no headaches.

I own a G2X, my buddy has a Sgs2 an I would not trade him dead even! The G2X is resilient and easily customizable. Dev support for the G2X is 50 to 1 compared to the Sgs2. I have (and still do) flashed numerous Roms and Kernels to my phone with little or no issue. He bricked his rather quickly. He got his second one and asked me to root and customize - which I did. I was astonished at how little there was to look at / choose from in the Samsung forums here.
bang for your buck? +1 for the G2X
better screen and lots more $$$, go for the s2.
my two pennies.

You must be talking about T-Mobile GS2. SGS2 international is one of the best supported devices out there, has official ICS + fully functional CM9.
Sweet, love all the input guys!! Really giving me a lot to work with and make my decision harder xD
I have a few questions, I found an SGS2 CM7 ROM that lists everything as working. And i too love CM7 waiting for AOKP or CM9 to obtain all the awesome features that CM7 has then i'll make the swap.
From what you guys posted it seems like the G2X has better stability and development. And yes i am talking about the SGH-T989 i cannot use the international version on T-Mobile as it doesnt support the 1700mhz frequency so i wont get 3G.
I am really liking the SGS2 ive been on youtube looking at different videos and it looks pretty awesome. Plus the super amoled display is stunning. Also, to the person who commented on the SGS2 having a lower resolution, what exactly do you mean? Are you saying the 800x400 is too small for the size? The screen is only .2 inches bigger than my HD2 which has the same resolution and i dont see it a problem. I might get the SGS2, i do really like the Amoled display. Ugh decisions decisions xD
Thanks all for the awesome information!
Got another question, 7o both phones support more than two finger multi touch?

Traded a Nexus for a charge...

So I'm betting I'll get a lot of hate for this, but I ended out trading my galaxy nexus for a Droid charge. Honestly I needed money so I traded someone for a charge plus $200, I thought it was a good deal.
To be honest, after using the charge for about a week I almost like it better than the nexus. I had the nexus since release and in my opinion the charger's screen looks better. ICS didn't wow me like everyone else, not yet at least.
Regardless, I'm not as disappointed as I thought I would be. Running tweaked 2.1 is excellent too. I still have an upgrade available so I'm thinking ill go with HTC again once they release something with a big screen.

The hardware is. The screen wasn't anything to brag about (Rezound's is nicer and released around the same time). The cpu was definitely a step backwards compared to the Exynos in the SGSII, as well as the gpu. Crap radios that are worse than the charge (I'm not sure if this has gotten better). But what makes the Gnex amazing is two things: pure ICS goodness and a HUGE dev commutity - larger than any other phone on Verizon has had since probably the OGDroid. To me this is enough to outweigh the relatively weak hardware.
P.S. The rezound is pretty much the opposite with good/decent hardware but crappy software (I hate all skins be it Sense, TouchWiz, Motoblur, etc.) and much smaller dev community. If that phone would get a fully functioning AOSP rom (AOKP or CM9), it would be better than the Gnex IMO. The only drawback would be the tiny battery.
After using it with ICS for a while I didn't find anything that was overly impressive about it. In fact the software keys at times were more of a pain.

But the software keys would be a hardware issue since they're only there because hardware keys were omitted. Don't get me wrong, I love Tweaked on my Charge (dwitherell is a scholar and a gentleman), but I will take AOSP any day over a skin-based rom. The biggest draw (for me at least) about ICS, other than the ui, is hardware acceleration.
I have at least managed to mimic (somewhat lol) the ICS ui with my TweakedICS theme but it's still not the same. I am content enough though.
I had the charge and I didn't like it. but with $200 extra not a bad deal. overall both of you had a good deal

I have the Rez, and I must say, the development is surprisingly good. No AOSP, but we do have some nice ICS leaks that work quite well. I'm running S-Off with the latest RUU and with CleanROM developer edition. It is very fast, clean, and it is fully functional. Radio reception is good and I get amazing battery life on the extended. Just sayin'...
My Charge is running Tweaked with PBJ, and it is great. I feel pretty lucky that I have, IMO, the two best phones on Verizon.
I bet the Incredible 4G is going be a nice phone, though. I honestly think that the GS3 will be somewhat overrated like the Galaxy Nexus, I just can't jive with pentile.

Sense ICS =/= AOSP ICS. Also, the dev community is still miniscule compared to the Gnex though. I mean come on saying you have amazing battery life with the extended battery is cheating. It's like saying you get amazing mileage on your car but converted your trunk and backseat into an extended gas tank, lol. Almost any phone can get amazing battery life on an extended battery . The Rezound is fast though and has the best screen on Verizon with great radios. That's why I feel the hardware is better than the Gnex but on the software and dev side I still think the Gnex is much better. To each his own though, and as long as you love your device that is ultimately all that matters. I'm still trying to pick up either device on the cheap but I might just wait to use my upgrade in early June.
To me the Incredible 4G is a disappointment spec-wise. I feel like it's a gimped One series phone. Also the screen is too small for my taste. I was really hoping the Incredible 4G was going to be a OneX equivalent a la Evo 4G LTE .

I can see what you're saying, however, CleanROM is de-sensed, and is just very clean all-round. There are plenty of tweaks to make it nicer. I run a custom launcher (keep going back to ADW). But yeah, I get great battery life on the extended, lol. I haven't tried the stock battery, so I can't really comment on that. I agree the Incredible 4G is kindof a pansy phone. The HTC One X is where its at. Good thing I didn't have the money at the time, because AmazonWireless was selling the AT&T HTC One X a couple weeks ago for $530 off contract. Yeah the 16GB internal only storage sucks, but I have other devices with tons of storage.
The screen on the HOX is the best of any phone (of course the same as the new EVO.) In fact, I'd go so far to say the HTC One X (S4 Krait AT&T version being the nicest) is the best phone, period. The lingering question is development. I don't think the AT&T version has an unlocked bootloader yet. AT&T apparently strong-armed HTC into removing the htcdev unlock method.
Also feel like I get an extra hour of screen on time with the charge.

After thumbing through the specs I was disappointed as well. Would have been great if the screen size would have have been made competitive with other maker's top tier phones.

Just bought a free Droid Charge from Amazon for my wife ($.01). Can anyone tell me a great ROM that is fairly currently supported for the Charge? I just want to quickly throw a nice ROM on here for her before I hand it over to her and never touch it again.

Tablets

Because I respect the Glacier community so much I pose this topic here.
I'm looking to find a cheap, maybe older, tablet to root and pimp like we have for our phone.
It will mainly be used for presentation purposes...video, slide shows, etc.
All ideas are welcomed, thank you.

I disagree. A refurbished Motorola Xoom might be the best bang for the buck you can get. Newegg had NEW Xoom tablets for just 300$ last weekend.

Both of these tablets would do. Honestly, I'd side with THEindian right now. iPad is a great device, and you'd be able to enjoy the best of both worlds with Android and iOS

I have a tf101. Asus makes some beastly tabs but they have bugs and stuff. Like the stock ics firmware causes SoDs but there's an awesome italian kernel dev named guevor that pretty much fixed it and its basically his job working on the kernel.
I've heard the Acer tabs are alright, I saw an A200 for 200 somewhere. There's also a new Acer tab with a 1080p screen coming out soon for 450 and there's also the Asus tf700 coming out that's an ipad 3 killer in the benchmarks.
But if you want to be cheap like me, get a tegra 2 tab. The application of the tegra 3 processing power isn't a huge thing at the moment.

It really depends on your price range. I am gonna make a last pitch for the ipad, it is iOS but you can jailbreak it an stuff. It has WAY better apps and more that are optimized for the screen. I was at the best buy mobile and i could barely figure out how to use the android tablet. You have an issue if the kernel dev can't navigate through the OS to find the settings button. Anyway, if you are dead set on android, google is expected to release a $200 dollar nexus tablet built by asus w/ tegra 3. That will probably be your best bet.

Yeah, been reading up on tabs all day and found some info on the nexus. I wish some details would be released on what kind of functionality it will have, but the price is definitely right along with processing power. I can live without a camera, but GPS might be nice to have in a 7" tablet. Hopefully the info goes viral after I/O next weekend....and ordering one doesn't require a lottery.
Anyone have any experience with the Dell Streak? I've found very mixed reviews out there. Super poor reviews on the Lenovo and Vizio. Seems Samsung, Acer, and Asus have best reviews and fair pricing on 7" tabs...I'm trying to stay under $250, goal being under $200.
I really just can't support anything i, even though I know the products are nice and jailbreakable. I bleed Android for better or worse. Started with a G1, had original chrome beta, and except for Wave and Drive failing, I have never been disappointed by anything g. I've talked and fought so much against iSheep and the iMachine I might get crucified if I showed up with an iPad ;-)

i got a Dell Streak 7, if you want my honest opinion, it's bad. the battery life sucks on this thing, and it took me a whole day just to upgrade to honeycomb. and they literally have NO development support AT ALL and worst of all, the thing comes with a Tegra 2 processor but only 512 MB of RAM. WTF
IMO, Dell tablets aren't worth it.
my dad has an Acer A500 (10 inch) and a friend of mine has the Acer A100 (7 inch). Acer is okay i guess, much better than Dell, but occasional lag on both devices. not sure if it's because of the way my dad and friend uses them, but battery life on the A100 is bad as well. A500 is okay, about 2 days moderate usage.
i think you should either wait for the Nexus or go for ASUS. i hear great things about those tablets, and they seem very great as well. and they've got HUGE development going on over there.

For the best value for your money, I'd suggest the Skypad A2. For just over $100, you get 7" ICS ready tablet, pre-rooted, with HDMI out. How many sub- $200 tablets can boast that? There are a couple of great reviews on Amazon and a handful of custom ROMs.
If you're looking for value, I'd recommend it. I've had no issues and loved it so far. If you're willing to spend the extra couple hundred, you can do much better.

Yes, the screen resolution and ram seem to be the biggest limiting factor for price. the Asus nexus looks to change this however with serious processing/ram power and a decent screen for ~$200....so the hype talk says. We'll see what happens after I/O this weekend. Bit I agree, for me 1Gb ram will likely be mandatory for good presentations.

Yes, low RAM, but if you're looking for value, how important is that? The 1.2 GHz processor does great with it, and I've regularly used PSX4Droid with no issues. I can't think of anything more processor intensive than that.
It's all about what you need/want. Personally, I'd much rather have the HDMI out and ICS over a nook.

Is that 1.2 single core? What about screen res?
I believe everything should still run smooth on devices with specs similar to those as this phone can too.
I bought fpse, and it actually runs smoother on this tablet if i enable it to use only one core. Lol

Yes, it's a single core. The res is average at best, since it's a 7" WVGA (800x480). It's pretty necessary to use the HDMI out, which gives full 1080p res.
There is no way it can compare to more expensive tablets, but it's something I could throw away tomorrow and not feel bad about losing.

Exactly. it's something I could literally throw to my 4 year old nephew and not think twice about. A tablet was something I couldn't justify since I have a work laptop and personal one, but the price was too difficult to pass up.
Sadly, I always get the question, oohh, is that an iPad?
