Hi, I was just wondering if I could get the communities opinion. The Samsung Galaxy S III was recently unveiled, and is soon to hit store shelves in Europe, as many people know. What I want the communities opinion on, is whether or not I should get it. I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S II, and am locked to a 2 year contract. By the time I'm able to upgrade, the S IV will be available. And while I can have the patience to wait for it, I'm currently in a hole of stupidity. I want this phone BAD. Bad enough that I would consider pre-ordering the unlocked version (which the only way it would be usable is if it is unlocked) just to have it, and also to be one of the first in North America. But my common sense/logic, which is battling my stupidity in a stand still war tells me to wait for the S IV and save my money. What do you guys think? Should I give into the hole of stupidity, or root for my common sense/logic?
I think that you should definitely wait. Quad-Core phones right now are absolutely nothing but a marketing hype. Maybe in the future they can be fully utilized but right now owning a quad-core phone is pointless, heck, the only benefit you get from owning a DUAL-core phone right now in my opinion is being future proof.
Aside the fact it is in the end JUST A PHONE, Single core phones are very capable of running more than 95% of all the apps in the market and all of those HD games only a handle of which require the NVIDIA Tegra( and is still not worth it in my opinion).
If you want a great mobile gaming experience and have money to spend, I suggest you buy a quad-core tablet, that's a good investment, but buying quad-core phones right now seems very pointless to me. ( Especially since you already own the fully capable SGSII )
I voted yes.

So....i've had enough of my awful ipaq 614c with its small screen. It's virtually impossible to text properly on it using your fingers.
In the £300-£350 price point lies 2 phones that both look good - i have no idea which one is better.
THe acer has that 1ghz snapdragon processor, the samsung has an 800mhz. I know cpu isnt the last word when it comes to performance, so which one is likely to perform better with WIndows 6.5??
Which phone is better? Any other phones in that price point coming with windows 6.5 and a snapdragon or equivalent?
I was having the same debate as well. One of my favorite WM phones ever was a samsung, and I know they have high quality phones. I have also had HTC which I feel are very good, but now too pricey and leaving the US market out in the cold.
My current phone is an f900 from Acer. Build quality was Average, and it seemed to work quite well once I got a light rom to save memory space. I really can't complain about it, and if I hadn't messed up a button and had to send it in for repair, I might have kept using it into next year.
However to keep it short, I made my decision on the neotouch, unfortunely though, I haven't recieved it yet. But when I saw the difference in the benchmarks for the two phones, I knew that the snapdragon made it for me. The quality is reportedly higher than the f900, and the power is astounding. For the price, I just don't know that any other phone compares. I would've waited for an HTC HD2, but they are delaying the US release and it was going to cost nearly double. I seem to upgrade phones every year, so I figured what comes out after a year of the snapdragon, will blow away the HD2.
I'll let you know whether I have buyer's remorse or not when I get the phone.
A Simple Phone for "Smartphone Enthusiasts".
Dual Core 1ghz processor, 1gb of ram, 1gb of rom. Front 1.3mp camera and back 5mp camera with led flash and a good design.
Nice 480*800 screen or qHD. We are still working out screen resolution/size. It would be 4inch (480x800) or 4.3" (qHD
The catch here is. It would be off-contract ( unlocked ). With a choice of roms staring with CyanogenMod and Stock Android.
People could port more to it, like MeeGo or MIUI
All this for $299-$349. Remember the Off Contract part
Would you buy something like this? Or would you go with a contract phone that you get with your carrier?
Please leave feedback below
Sounds pretty nice to me, so it would come unlocked? I think it would sell if it had qHD screen and you sent it to review to the big companies, get some publicity. Although, sometimes contract is important, what carriers would it work on? You should work it out with carriers to make it free.
Please thank me if I helped.
For that price, yes, absolutely. That sounds like a great value. The physical design, however, would likely play a large role in the people's decision-making process. Likewise, so do the bands.
I'd agree with the previous poster on publicity though. Get it out to some popular sites for a review and you'll likely sell a few.

The antenna is still in debate, we have separate AT&T 3G and a T-Mobile 3G antennas. We will probably go for the At&t compatible one just to reach a larger audience. Pentaband GSM antennas are very hard to come buy for small buyers ( 1k or less). But definitively not CDMA carriers.
Our "game plan" is to go to the community once we have the prototype ready and ask for investment, on like Kickstarter or some other website like that for the first wave of devices, if we sell those we can make more.
I find it very unlikely that we can get contracts any time soon. We will really target the "Enthusiast" market with the phone.
The design will be out soon enough. it will be "ICS ready", since neither meego nor android will use physical buttons bellow the display.
We are really grateful that Android exists so we can work on products like this for a smaller group of people that love their devices.
Sounds like a phone I would buy. And I am quite the "smartphone enthusiast" and I'm a big fan of buying off contract.
Of course I'm on T-Mobile, but regardless, assuming I was on AT&T I would seriously consider it.
I would like to point out that you would want to consider by the time you would be able to "realistically" release this phone, are the specs going to be sufficient for your target audience? I'm not talking about releasing a "cutting edge" phone, at this very moment phones are pushing 1.5 dual core, and I know (currently owning a 1.0 dual core phone) that my phone is more than sufficient for all my tasks, heavy-duty or not, and will continue to be for quite some time.
Sounds awesome I'm sure you'd sell many but the design and size will play a big part even if you have great internals,, But I would buy just for the modding capabilities,, add on parts like keyboard, better camera, betters flash for pictures,, that be nice make it unique.
Absolutely! I just purchased my Motorola Defy free of contract for approximately $299. My last 2 android phones were also purchased free of contracts, so I would deffinitely consider it and be glad it's not with a contract. Would it be available in Europe?
If it were to be released soon, yes, because then it would have a running chance at the competing phones being released. The later it would be released, the more beefed up the specs would have to be. Im sure in 6 months we'll be seeing 1.5-2.0 dual core or hell even maybe even a quad core seeing as how fast tech moves nowadays
I usually don't buy contract phones, but get the devices of my choice from amazon.
The specs sound nice, but one of the most important factors would be the design.
Hello,I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII and i don't know to stay with SIII more time or sell SIII and wait for iPhone 5?SIII is really great so I am confused. SIII vs. iPhone 5
Have you used your SGSIII until it's full potential yet?
If you haven't, you should try it like now or soon enough.
Wait for iP5's launch and when it launches, try out iP5 and see if it suits you better than your SGSIII then make your decision.
There is no point selling your SGSIII now and wait for a non-launched phone.
Really??? With all the tech crammed into that S3 you would sell for a iphone 5? I just have to ask why are you interested in the iphone? I was a long time iPhone user, I have lots of money tied up in the app store still... I started with the 2G all the way to the 4S 64 GB. This is why I ask why, I switched just all of the sudden to a samsung note due to apples choke hold that they have on the market, I hated that a company would make a great app and apple would rip it off patent it and change the policy terms so that now one could have the same thing, I saw that all too often. Second was the lack of upgrades... I give it to apple they make so of the best looking hardware I have ever seen but been with them from the mobile beginnings I always was in the group of people that always hacked the phone to add what should have been. I remember always in the rumor mill hearing of the new features and great upgades only to spend 300 buck for a high res screen?? and a little faster processor, they have always followed far behind everyone else in terms of updated hardware and software. I would keep that S3, the iPhone 5 is rumoredto release not in june like the old days but in december like the last iphone 4S (steve is gone so say good bye to tradition) Also think what would apple really give you other that a pretty phone? 3.5 inch screen to ??? 4 WOW, quad core processor, (you already have that and dont have to wait till the next year) and a 9 MP camera? lol The only thing I still like about apple is the cult following that keeps making a large amount of accessories for their products, most cell phone get that love for 6 months and then on to the next. (3GS is now 3 years old and there is a ton of **** for it to buy). That is what I would really let make up your mind. Support or little support as far as accessories. Hardware is going to lack what you currently have and the app store is very unfriendly, it only benifits apple. I hope I didnt ramble too much and hope this helps.

I agree!! Why would you even think about that old behind technology?
My cellphone history:
Cell phone - Bought for - Sold for - Used for
Nokia X6 - 250 $ - 180$ - 2 months
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i - 250$ - 220$ - 2 months
Apple iPhone 3gs - 300$ - 100$ - 1 year
HTC Incredible S - 250$ - 180$ - 1 month
I have had other cell phones in the gaps but I don't remember them, the prices or the time used for.
So here is my story, I have had the need to buy a cellphone in the recent days and I have been following the market too. I first wanted an HTC Sensation which was for 320$, 3 months earlier, but now, I can find the same one for 210$ or something. I then wanted a Samsung Galaxy S 2 which was available for 380$ 2 months before but now I can find one for 260$ or less. The same goes with other cell phones I have been following (much of stalking).
Living in a country where I get 15$ a month for my pocket money, you can understand the importance of even 1$ for me. 10$ here means a lot for some people. I can get a Nokia 1280 or a Nokia 1202 for 10$, so, that explains the story. Being the guy who loves new technology, I want to get the best technology around me and get one which can get me through a period of 1 - 2 years without being called outdated or old. From the above history, you can know that I have used the iPhone 3gs for 1 year or even more time than that due to the fact that Apple gives update to most of it's devices (starting from 3gs), I was happy with it but that's the time when the iPhone 4s came to the market and I had to bear a loss of 200$. That loss meant a lot to me. It brought down to the earth from the sky. There aren't any companies which offer contracts which are good. I then think that I should wait for the next model to release because I want to buy an older model because it would fall cheaper.
This is being too big, long story short. Any cellphone that comes to the market losses it's value within a new cellphone from that company. Since I want to buy a phone and not bear a big loss the next time and have the best technology at the same that, I can't decide to buy a cellphone because I am being fearful because if I buy a cellphone, it might loss it's value tomorrow when a better one comes to the market and I will have to bear a great loss again. I was just wondering if I am being too fearful regarding this matter.
Can anyone advise me what to do because I am confused a LOT?
Note: All the phones talked about above are second hands because I can't offered new ones.
Thats the way it is with technology, especially in the fast paced mobile market. New models are always coming out and devices depreciate very quickly. You want a phone that can work for your needs, it doesn't have to be the lastest and greatest if your needs don't require high end hardware.
iPhones do get supported quite a while in new OS versions, but for older devices the OS can be stripped of new features like Siri. iPhones are also more expensive because you are paying for the brand name. If you want an Android device that stays up to date for a while, get a Nexus device. But you don't need to be on the latest and greatest phone with the newest version of Android. Find something you like and can afford and buy it. Don't assume it will get any OS updates if its an older or uncommon device. And don't pay attention to its resale value, technology loses its value fast.
I kinda wonder why it is more important to you what your phone costs than what it can do for you. Personally, I don't care at all about value loss. I list the features I want and then go for the cheapest model that has them. The phone then gets used till it either breaks down or is lost.

Sorry but the talk isn't about getting an iPhone or an Android. Not that you are provoking a war or something. I just liked the way it was, simple and stable. I can't recall any crash on the OS or anything. Anyway, the topic is being turned away. The basic meaning of getting an update is that most of the new applications are supported by the latest OS. Having OS 4.3.3 won't get you the Facebook application because it isn't supported, likewise, you can't get Google Chrome application on anything below 4.0.4 on Android, that's where it starts to suck.
I have to agree that technology loses a lot of value in a very short time. I was just wondering if I was being too fearful. I can't even decide on something.

In my case it does, specially with the case that I want an upgraded chipset model when it becomes cheaper.
I recommend purchasing a device second hand if you haven't decided that already, but with fairly good dev support and a large community.
EDIT: that way ROMs running latest firmware which would be delayed or discontinued on your handset, will come your way in just a matter of time
Galaxy nexus, or S2 would be smart options imo
Sent from my GT-I9300
Yea, would agree with 23Six. Galaxy Nexus or SGS2 (if SGS2, try to get the I9100 as there are a couple of variants and the I9100 has a wider dev base). With the Nexus, OS updates are pretty much as soon as Google releases them AFAIK. The SGS2 should be at a relatively good price point and shouldn't depreciate too much further since the SGS3 is out and SGS4 sounds to be in the pipeline.
It's a lot of money - but it's up to you if it's worth it.
One thing I think that's keeping you back is that you are looking at price to determine value. Price doesn't tell you if something is still a good phone, if the phone can still do what you need.
"Keeping up with technology" is an expensive hobby - but it's just a hobby, it's not necessary. You can buy a phone and keep it for two years, no problem - and it will probably be just fine unless you lose it or break it. Your iPhone 3 was still just fine and wasn't a $200 loss when the iPhone 4 came out. You had the phone for a period of time before the price dropped - it will ALWAYS be cheaper to wait, and you can wait literally forever.
I agree with onyxbits - figure out what you really want from a phone and then figure out which model best meets your needs for a price you're okay with. Setting a budget can help you narrow it down instead of feeling pressured and unsure.
So I have a contract that's up for renewal (I'm sticking with The Beast, I go to rural Louisiana enough to justify the $$ in exchange for the service) and I was thinking about picking up an S4 and unloading my 3 on ebay, it would more or less cover the cost. But then I got to thinking - I run AOKP and love it to death because there's no useless bells and whistles that I don't use and just add bloat and overhead, and I'd do the same on a 4...which makes virtually all the selling points of it (the eye tracking, touchfree, fast camera) moot for me. Sure, the Snapdragon 600 is faster and the screen *is* a lot nicer, but AOKP is already silky-smooth on the S3 and the screen is more than adequate for me, but at the end of the day there's nowhere near the level of improvement I saw coming from a Droid X2 to the S3.
So, just asking for thoughts here, would you bother with the upgrade, that would be free or at worse >$50 but still involve hacking up a new phone and getting everything just right all over again, or skip this generation and wait for the next crop of gear?
If you run an non-TW ROM, all great new features from Samsung won't work so why bother?

Does the S4 even have the bootloader unlocked? That would be an important consideration if you want to run AOKP.
im not upgrading for the exact reasons you just described and as i last haerd they were having issues unlocking the S4 on vzw.
waiting for something really worthwhile.
hoping for nexus 5 this fall thats compatibile on VZW
I'm on the same boat. I have two upgrades with Verizon. The S4 doesn't convinced me. I might take the Moto X for a test drive.
If I were you, I would sell your S3, buy an S4 with your upgrade at Verizon. DON"T open the box (aka buy it through newegg or amazon instead of going to the store where they set it up for you). Then sell the S4 on ebay as New. Take all that money and buy a S4 developer addition. Will solve the bootloader problem because it looks there is a chance that this one will never get unlocked. Or atleast it isn't worth the risk in my opinion. I enjoy the features of being both rooted and unlocked too much to not have them.
If you are worried about not having a phone while all the selling is occurring, I would buy the S4 developer addition on a credit card to avoid actually paying for it for 30ish days. Then start selling and you should probably have your money in time if you play your cards right.
I completely agree with drewmey. To date, only root has been achieved on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, so unless you plan on sticking with stock Touchwiz UX for a while, the Developer Edition S4 is your best bet. OR you could just stick with your S3 for now (seeing as how we already have root and our bootloader unlocked) until the Nexus 5 (one can dream), the Samsung Galaxy S5, or whatever other upcoming phone tickles your fancy.
Upgrading should be discussed in the other devices sticky thread

I don't think it is much of an upgrade to go with an S4. To me the specs aren't much better. It was kind of a waste that they even put it out. It's just something to fill the gap before something good IMO

Sorry, haven't been on here in ages and wasn't sure where to put this.
Thanks for all the feedback...I would be optimistic about it eventually being unlocked again but the carriers are getting nastier about it. I have a family plan with an "extra" line that upgrades the opposite year as my line, so I don't need to hold out for new hardware; I'd be good in time for the S5 by May or whenever but not for the Nexus 5. Or the Moto X.
Or maybe just get a brand-spanking-new S3 with a Lifeproof or OB Armor case (I'm a compulsive runner, rain snow sleet or hail) and a few hundred bucks in my pocket and sit tight for a couple of more generations...hmmmmmmm..

Also excellent battery life. Lack of accessories though.
