How to root Samsung Galaxy S 4G T-mobile USA (sgh-t959v) with 3e Recovery ? - General Questions and Answers

Ok Hi every one. I'm new here but I learned much about what I want. Still nothing. I tried to root my sgs 4g with superoneclick with no luck, many different CF also with no luck. Generaly probably my problem is that I've got 3e recovery.. i tried also put CWM but also with no luck and load some other kernel through Odin but only one working is the same that I've got - 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ5-CL685701. The main reason about the root is I want ICS 4 on my samsung galaxy s t-mobile. I'm shore its posibble. Thanks for any sugestions.

Z4root or superoneclick needed
Here's a forum that talks about rooting your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966133
I did it on version 2.2 with Z4root. But in that forum they mention superoneclickroot, so you may want to try that one.
In any case, you will likely need to get Odin 1.7 (the samsung flashing tool) and the USB drivers for your device ready on your PC before you can continue.
Take a look at that forum for more info to get you going in the right direction

Heres' the ROM I am currently using....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553437
But I have heard there are others that might be better, so I ma looking for the latest and greatest right now. But I can confirm this works fine. You probably want to optimize your radio after you get through the whole ROM install. If you are in the US, I can point you to where to get a new radio.
Super Wipe Script for Vibrant with ICS:

General process for new ROM is to backup in recovery then super wipe the phone and reboot to recovery then run your ROM installer. It is also recommended to install any firmware updates BEFORE the ROM install, so if you have one, keep this in mind.

[Q] The more I read, the more confused I get

New to Android, about 3 weeks now with my Rogers 1727R. I've been trying to grab all the good files and build my understanding of returning my phone to it's stock ROM if I have to return it or if I brick it etc. But I seem to have downloaded, from this forum, so many files, with different names and files sizes, I'm confused about what does what. So I'm asking any senior people here if they can tell me what I have, what it does, and whether I need it. Here goes:
Stock_ROM_SGH-I727R-UCKJ2-k0nane.7z - Think this is a stock ROM but un-bloated. It's 257 MB.
i727_stock_kernel_odin.tar - It's 10 MB, appears to be a stock AT&T ROM, but perhaps just the kernel, not the whole ROM?
Stock Recovery.tar - It's 6.08 MB. Downloaded it today.
Nandroid backup - 841 Megs with data.ext4.tar, system.ext4.tar, boot.img and recovery.img which I thought was a complete image of my ROM.
Look at the size differences. From 6 MB up to 841 MB. What the heck are all these files?
please dont cross-post.....
I was wondering the same thing. I rooted my Skyrocket but in the instance that ICS is available before more custom roms, I may want to unroot. I can't find much information on this. Only how to root for which there is good information and tutorial videos. The size of the different recovery files seems to vary quite a bit.
You do not.need to unroot to take an ota update. You just cant delete any bloat. And gota have stock recovery..... so freeze bloat dont delete. But if you do you can always odin the stock tar
I thought when you flash ClockWorkMod (recovery.tar) that that replaces your stock recovery. Or do you still have the stock recovery just with CWM added?

Yes when you flash CWM you replace stock, do not take an update if you are using CWM, flash back to stock recovery first if you think you just have to have the #.#.2 instead of the #.#.1, to me its not worth it. Once I flash I don't go back to stock. The developers here are amazing.
@ harry_fine, be careful, or you are going to end up with a $200 paper weight. I know how confusing this stuff looks when you first start. Do you're research, make a plan before downloading random stuff you know nothing about. I like to play it safe. I read the posts in the developers section a few times a day for a week before I even start to flash a phone. Most all developers that post things give a very in depth description of what it is they are making available READ IT ALL, and follow directions posted. If i see something that looks interesting I just let it sit a couple days and read what people post about it. If all seems good and there are no major problems I give it a try if not ill let it pass. I have yet to brick a phone (knock on wood). I hope this helps.
BTW
Stock_ROM_SGH-I727R-UCKJ2-k0nane.7z -its a ROM, the post where you got it should tell you whats in it
i727_stock_kernel_odin.tar - this is a stock kernel, I like to think of them as drivers for you phone, install with odin
Stock Recovery.tar - this is a stock recovery you need this if you have installed CWM but want to instal an update, install with odin
Nandroid backup - this is something you should make using CWM before you start flashing a ROM just encase the ROM jacks up you phone you can reinstall
Thanks for explaining that. I am still trying to get the hang of everything myself. I read the Rooting instructions and watched several how to videos before I even considered taking the plunge. I am still a little confused about some of the terminology but I am learning by the day.
The only reason I would consider going back to stock would be if ICS is available before CM7 or CM9 on Skyrocket and then I would want to try it out.
So, if I were to flash back to "stock recovery.tar" (Does the name matter at all?) and take the update, that would would mean I was unrooted again right? Then I would undergo the same procedure to flash cwm and then Superuser?
If I use a custom kernal can that stay the same or does it need to be stock as well before installing an update or new rom?
I don't pay that much attention to the "return to stock threads" since I would never risk it for an update, even ICS, but from what I understand If you wanted to take the update you would need to put the stock recovery (name may not matter but why risk it) and stock kernel back in. You would still be rooted, and need only install CWM if you wanted to instal another ROM later. I think. If I am wrong someone will correct me, but that should be that.
Then how does one completely unroot if they wanted (or needed) to?
To unroot you odin the stock tar

The stock tar in the unroot reaturn to stock fix soft brick thread. Is the factory firmware the phone comes with.....stock recovery not rooted

[Q] Root & CWM Issues SK4G

Hello!
The reason I am posting a new thread about this is because I have searched all over XDA as well as other sites to find solutions to my problems without any luck. I have tried so many different methods that haven't worked that I've just lost all patience and need some one on one help.
Alright, so I have been attempting for several days now to successfully root and flash a custom rom to my Tmobile Samsung SK4G.
I used superoneclick - i have superuser, terminal emulator and root checker. All work. I have rooted my device. Atleast accord to t.e. & r. c. ^^
Now the problems that I am having is flashing a custom rom.
I have tried using Rom Manager to do so without any luck. I have manually downloaded and pushed (or whatever) the recovery file to the necessary location and still can't boot into CWM recovery mode. I still keep getting stock recovery (blue).
I also have tried to 'install package files' or whatever it says without any luck. Any time I try to flash roms, I get an error. )E:signature verification failed or something similar.
I have tried to ODIN but was unsuccessful. So since I still have root, if someone could just help me out with all appropriate (and recent) files and tell me what to do with them step by step. That would be great. And please don't try to redirect me to a ''noob root" or "noob cus rom" thread. I promise I already read through them.
I've tried everything. Nothing is working and I'm getting tired of the SK4G continuing to FC or reboot all on its own or freeze. I'm just having issues and I hear that rooting/cus roms are helping with those problems.
Thanks! I hope someone can help. I'm pretty flustered by this point and I can try to give any additional information necessary.
Is it that u can't get to orange cwm? If so there is some batch that dos it on the dev forum on this decive under the cwm for sk4g

gee thanks skippy your input has been a delight... good thing you put a link and stuff to that batch from the dev forum that "dos" it
but seriously I have the exact same problem as the OP and have not been able to truly find a solution. so a link to the "batch file from the dev forum" would be greatly appreciated
---------- Post added at 02:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:18 AM ----------
here is that link from the dev board BIG THANKS TO sduvick for the script
THIS DOS IT
I'm having a similar problem, I have CWM and have flashed it and tried to reboot into recovery only to recieve the stock recovery (blue). I went to the cwm creator (Kryon69? or something like that) got the recovery file and the update zip.
I have the update zip in the phone replaced with the proper one, but when I use android commander to push the recovery it says I am not rooted.
I have super user and a buddy told me that wont load up if I am not rooted, and I have tried to root it again with an adb program and that shows that root is succesful.
Android commander q&a said that my problem is that I am not hard rooted and that I should flash to a rom that will support hard root, but I can't flash to the new rom because i can't get to cwm recovery.
*sidenote* have they re uploaded any of the roms for sk4g to something other than multi upload yet? I've only found one rom as of a few days ago and it's not the one i particularly yearn for.
I have smooth maximus x,gingerclone v2,gov2 but idk how to use dropbo to share them
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
I have been having a problem with this too, I used super oneclick and rooted it, and tried to push the recovery file to system/bin but it would not allow me. it said i wasnt rooted, i have the recovery.zip file in the sd card as well as a smooth maximus rom but it will not work.
I would be grateful for some guidance...
I have been researching for 2 days on how to do this and have finally succumbed to asking for help so please help a humble noob.
Also if anybody has the link for KJ2 rom so i can restore it back to normal through ODIN i would appreciate it. i cant find the file anywhere

[Q] Rooting with 2.3.6

You can use the latest SuperOneClick or you can flash a ROM/kernel that comes rooted. The latter of which can be found in the dev section. If you go that route, I highly recommend using one of bhundven's one-clicks to install 2.3.6 with CWM/root/voodoo lagfix. From there you can install a different custom ROM/kernel if you wish.
Or you can click on the first link in my signature and follow the guide.

which superoneclick? the thread said something about modifying it, do you just download it and run or do i have to change something from the x10 options
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
Look for rooting in this guide.
I also am trying to figure out how to root it. Most guides point to superoneclick, so I downloaded it, although on the shortfuse site there are plenty of complaints saying it is freezing at step 7. I read the guide and it says that since I'm already GB, I can install a rom/kernal combo that will root it in the process. I am wanting to run Valhall black and it doesn't say that a root is necessary in the directions, it just says place the .zip in the root of the SD folder.
Then I read in other places that superoneclick isn't necessary with stock GB, and point to Odin, and then some say Odin isn't necessary and point to "an easier way for stock GB" but then don't say what the easier way is.
The wiki says that one of the ways to root is to install a CWM voodoo lagfix kernel (which is included in Valhalla Black, I think) without needing to root.
Mindboggling
Follow the guide in the first link in my signature. It is very specific! If you have any questions let us know.
Root is necessary. You need to root, then follow the directions regarding SGS Kernel Flasher, then flash Valhalla Black. If you follow the guide you will be good. I tell you the version of SuperOneClick to use. It works. Don't worry about what ever else you read.
Thanks, so far so good. Kernel in progress.
This is for Lumin30
I clicked on your link and followed everything to the T but when it gets to step #7 on the oneclick, it sits an sits (which we wait and wait) but then the oneclick after about 15 minutes of waiting says not responding. Any help on that?
The link I posted? If so, close SuperOneClick and try it again. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Let me know if you have any more problems.
Also, when you plug your phone is does your computer recognize the phone?
That would be the problem. When I plug my phone into the computer it doesnt read it when in debug mode, but if it isnt in debug mode I can as storage.

Open SuperOneClick - assuming you downloaded the version I recommended in the guide.
First thing to try is using a USB port you have not plugged your phone into yet that is directly attached to your computer - meaning no hubs or addon usb boards.
Try that. Let the computer install the drivers. It should say they installed and click Root.
Also - verify what you currently have on your phone before proceeding.
Lastly - you will need to refresh your browser to see my replies
That did it. Thank you so much. But now one last question. How do i find the IMEI to make sure it changed? It said rooted but everythings on my phones looks pretty much the same as it did before I rooted it. An also when it was rooting it said LOG: write failed (errno=14) alot. Does that matter?

Read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
It will tell you how to find your IMEI and how to back up your EFS folder - which is VERY important. And you can go to Market, download 'Root Checker Basic' to verify you are rooted.
And hit thanks

If you do decide to use the guide above - please provide feedback if you think I left out any little steps, find anything not clear or have a suggestion to make the guide better.
OH HELL - YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR IMEI TO CHANGE. READ THE GUIDE!
I missed that part of your post!
Thanks for the help. I do have another question. If I want to change ROM's do I just flash them the same way or do I need to do something else first before I flash it? An by the way, the IMEI was still the same. I thought it was suppose to cahnge. Sorry this is my first time ever doing this.
---------- Post added at 04:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:02 AM ----------
I just flashed a rom and now my phone is stuck omn the start up sceen and has been like that for 10 minutes now and doesnt do anything. It is stuck on the samsung Galaxy s screen. OMG
Uh oh. What were you on and what did you try to flash thag got you stuck?
Bionix_Frost_SGS4G
An used the sgs thing to flash
So you were on Bionic Frost? Or tried to flash Bionic Frost? I need to know what you were first on - then what ROM you tried to flash.
Tried to flash
Hehe. Ok. So you tried to flash Bionic Frost - a Froyo based ROM. And what were ROM were you using before you tried to flash Bionic Frost?
Sherbear
You are making me laugh. We will get this fixed. But I need to know what ROM you originally used. Or that can be said - what is the first ROM you flashed? I am assuming it was a GB based ROM but I was to confirm first before we proceed.

[R&D][Help] Two things needed

I borked my phone when the OTA went out yesterday. It tried to install and of course, error. Cannot get into recovery anymore and having trouble with Jodin and heimdall. I'm on a Mac so if you don't recognize those names, don't worry. So if someone could help me with the PIT file for heimdall, or explain how the hell to get Jodin to work, that'd be great.
TWRP has a coreprimelte version. We may have access to a custom recovery. You can get it here. If someone is still on the 5.1.1 and can make a back up, you can save us a lot of time.
This means we can have ported ROM's in a very short period of time. Do some research and I'll start porting.
Edit: For clarity, I'm referring to the SM-G360V.
The official TWRP is for a GSM version of the Core Prime. I tried it on my S820L (Straighttalk's CDMA version) and it did not work (Black screen, although it would vibrate when touched). I tried recoveries for other models and none worked.
I am hoping if someone makes a TWRP for the Verizon Core Prime it will work with the Straight Talk one since they are likely identical...
There are instructions here on XDA on how to compile TWRP but they are above my head. Maybe someone more knowlegeable will do it soon?
Also wonder if the 5.1.1 OTA would work on the ST phone, but can't try it without a custom recovery.
---------- Post added at 05:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:58 AM ----------
When I tried to flash all those custom recoveries I lost the stock. I found the one in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-core/help/cwm-samsung-sm-g360h-galaxy-core-prime-t3037666 and flashed it with ODIN (On my Mac running Parallels). Not sure how its done with heimdal but give it a try maybe.
I'm thinking that since the only real difference is Verizon's has more power, marginally by a 50% increase, working as a group, we should be able to get everyone up and running together. Most of these phones are CDMA with a few being GSM.

[Completed] SCHi-800

I have been trying to install a custom recovery on my Samsung Galaxy Tab SCHi-800 for a little over a month now, but i keep reaching dead ends. Ive tried rom Manager, but they just keep telling me my device is not supported. Ive tried flashify too and it has also told me my device is not supported. Then i tried ACS Updater and it does nothing but reboot my device and I still have the original stock recovery. I do not have access to a computer so i cant flash it that way either. I need immediate help because i am all types of lost at this point.

theres no point trying if cwm nor twrp never made a recovery for your device.

anyways, there is a really old version of cwm recovery for your device.
