You can use the latest SuperOneClick or you can flash a ROM/kernel that comes rooted. The latter of which can be found in the dev section. If you go that route, I highly recommend using one of bhundven's one-clicks to install 2.3.6 with CWM/root/voodoo lagfix. From there you can install a different custom ROM/kernel if you wish.

Or you can click on the first link in my signature and follow the guide.

which superoneclick? the thread said something about modifying it, do you just download it and run or do i have to change something from the x10 options

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
Look for rooting in this guide.

I also am trying to figure out how to root it. Most guides point to superoneclick, so I downloaded it, although on the shortfuse site there are plenty of complaints saying it is freezing at step 7. I read the guide and it says that since I'm already GB, I can install a rom/kernal combo that will root it in the process. I am wanting to run Valhall black and it doesn't say that a root is necessary in the directions, it just says place the .zip in the root of the SD folder.
Then I read in other places that superoneclick isn't necessary with stock GB, and point to Odin, and then some say Odin isn't necessary and point to "an easier way for stock GB" but then don't say what the easier way is.
The wiki says that one of the ways to root is to install a CWM voodoo lagfix kernel (which is included in Valhalla Black, I think) without needing to root.
Mindboggling

Follow the guide in the first link in my signature. It is very specific! If you have any questions let us know.
Root is necessary. You need to root, then follow the directions regarding SGS Kernel Flasher, then flash Valhalla Black. If you follow the guide you will be good. I tell you the version of SuperOneClick to use. It works. Don't worry about what ever else you read.

Thanks, so far so good. Kernel in progress.

This is for Lumin30
I clicked on your link and followed everything to the T but when it gets to step #7 on the oneclick, it sits an sits (which we wait and wait) but then the oneclick after about 15 minutes of waiting says not responding. Any help on that?

The link I posted? If so, close SuperOneClick and try it again. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Let me know if you have any more problems.
Also, when you plug your phone is does your computer recognize the phone?

That would be the problem. When I plug my phone into the computer it doesnt read it when in debug mode, but if it isnt in debug mode I can as storage.

Open SuperOneClick - assuming you downloaded the version I recommended in the guide.
First thing to try is using a USB port you have not plugged your phone into yet that is directly attached to your computer - meaning no hubs or addon usb boards.
Try that. Let the computer install the drivers. It should say they installed and click Root.
Also - verify what you currently have on your phone before proceeding.
Lastly - you will need to refresh your browser to see my replies

That did it. Thank you so much. But now one last question. How do i find the IMEI to make sure it changed? It said rooted but everythings on my phones looks pretty much the same as it did before I rooted it. An also when it was rooting it said LOG: write failed (errno=14) alot. Does that matter?

Read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
It will tell you how to find your IMEI and how to back up your EFS folder - which is VERY important. And you can go to Market, download 'Root Checker Basic' to verify you are rooted.
And hit thanks

If you do decide to use the guide above - please provide feedback if you think I left out any little steps, find anything not clear or have a suggestion to make the guide better.
OH HELL - YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR IMEI TO CHANGE. READ THE GUIDE!
I missed that part of your post!

Thanks for the help. I do have another question. If I want to change ROM's do I just flash them the same way or do I need to do something else first before I flash it? An by the way, the IMEI was still the same. I thought it was suppose to cahnge. Sorry this is my first time ever doing this.

I just flashed a rom and now my phone is stuck omn the start up sceen and has been like that for 10 minutes now and doesnt do anything. It is stuck on the samsung Galaxy s screen. OMG

Uh oh. What were you on and what did you try to flash thag got you stuck?

Bionix_Frost_SGS4G
An used the sgs thing to flash

So you were on Bionic Frost? Or tried to flash Bionic Frost? I need to know what you were first on - then what ROM you tried to flash.

Tried to flash

Hehe. Ok. So you tried to flash Bionic Frost - a Froyo based ROM. And what were ROM were you using before you tried to flash Bionic Frost?
Sherbear
You are making me laugh. We will get this fixed. But I need to know what ROM you originally used. Or that can be said - what is the first ROM you flashed? I am assuming it was a GB based ROM but I was to confirm first before we proceed.

[Q] CWM Wont work and other aggravating problems- What can i do?

Hello, boy do I have a mishap. Well, anyway to begin I will say that I decided I wanted to root my phone to debloat it. So what I did, is downloaded the EE4 update and did the VooDoo V4 Kernel that flashes CWM and EXT4 and other junk. Well that all went great. I got it rooted and such but then just tinkering around I went into Rom Manager and told it to back up. WELL, when I did this the phone got locked on the SAMSUNG boot screen for hours and continued to refuse to boot. SO, I attempted to fix it by installing altered beast just to get the os running again and went into clockwork and backed it up. Then I went to the rooted ed1 to bring it back up to EE4 rooted and with the voodoo kernel and such but it refuses to open clockwork! The voodoo kernel changes filesystems and roots it and such but clockwork wont load. When I try to flash it in rom manager it says its succesful and then i go to reboot in recovery. It takes me to the Samsung Recovery 3e, I try to the update.zip, (yes i took the cwm recovery-update.zip and renamed it and through it in the sd card root) but all that happens is that a progress bar shows up for a split second then the android guy with the triangle and ! shows up and it does nothing. Help? I really need to back it up, preferably in the rooted ed1 but in ee4 will work to. Any ideas would be appreciated. I used odin v1.3 by the way. Im willing to try anything to get clockwork to boot so i can back it up. What do I do?
EDIT: Also, now when I go into 3e recovery, it complains saying " cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 " or something like that.
Did you read anything on this forum beforehand? Or just go link by link downloading files and deciding what to try on your phone?
Just saying..
Yeah, I did. Ive searched everywhere. I cant find anything about my problem. Ive looked at things that are close, hoping a solution can be found but nothing and no I wasnt just downloading files and spoon feeding them to my phone.. I just wanted to be able to debloat it.
Go search about Rom Manager and let us know what you find out...
I dont see how thats going to get me one step closer to solving my problem. Ive done the searching, now im asking.
Start w/ this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100384
I can't tell where you are currently on your phone from reading that as it's to much text in one paragraph and it isn't put together in a logical sense and seems to jump around. I would look at the instructions for going to rooted EE4 in the Dev forum as that should get you to where you want to be with voodoo/cwm/rom
Instead of being a Forum Snob. If you know the answer, why don't you just help him out?
There's an abundance of confusing information on here and everyone uses acronyms. I too searched for hours on how to solve a similar problem and ended up having it taken care of for me. People join communities like this one for help. Not to get flamed for asking a question. It may be elementary to YOU but not everyone.
Thanks, for the care. Sorry about that if its jumbled, im frustrated with this because ive flashed the rooted ed1 about a billion times now, trying everything to get it functioning. Id be glad to try to explain again if that could help? Ah, yes. Well, I returned to the forum about installing the voodoo kernel. I followed the process word for word. But it just doesnt seem to want to work. Right now I just flashed it again back to the rooted ed1. Would I be able to put CWM on there at that point?

Oh and sorry if Im not getting this. Are you saying use a application that imnuts made? If so, could you be so nice to link it? Or a method he used? I looked for stuff but I didnt find anything other then what looks like a stock rom/kernel ed1 from him
I know how it is to be frustrated, but like they all said all of your questions have already been answered.
Here's my attempt to help:
Your problem lies in trying to flash CWR through ROM Manager, it currently doesn't play well with our phones. Word is that Koush (the creator) needs to update something for it to work with our phones. The bootloader is unlocked.
To flash imnuts' version of CWR, you'll need to use Samsung's leaked software called Odin - it's PC only. The alternative is Heimdall which is supposed to be cross-platform compatible, but the latest version is command-line only.
You have to find out if you've converted your system to EXT4 or if it's still RFS. That depends on if you have the Voodoo lagfix enabled or not. Check out the dev section and look for the titles that say [RECOVERY], [ODIN], [ROM], and/or something like "Get yourself to EE4 successfully".
A few links:

Well, currently right now its rfs. Its the stock file system. What I was going to do, or did before, was to put it in download mode and flash the VoodooV4 Kernel. It roots the phone, and all that good stuff and is suppose to put the Voodoo recovery/cwm on there.
EDIT: Heres the proccess I followed before.

The recovery is a separate flash, both in odin. First the kernel, then Recovery.
Just follow here from the beginning, it should work for you:

I was able to get it installed. Now my only question is, I want this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092114 for my phone. But its not in a zip. Am I out of luck? Or do I not have to use CWM to install the kernel? Can I use odin and still be okay?

You do need Odin to load that, but i'm wondering why you want to? Did you install the PBJ kernel following the instructions from the other link?
If you want to go down this route, be sure to apply the SD Card fix as well - you'll find posts about it.

Please help me with flashing my device. I am new to this matter and I have nowhere to go. I hope that this will help me.
So, my problem is that I want to upgrade their devices to Android 2.3, please tell me step by step how to start and tell a good stable firmware is desirable to support Voodoo.
Had never sewed Android device.

You don't need to flash anything if you just want to run gb. Connect your phone to samsung kies and it will update your phone to the latest gingerbread.

Indeed. The current stock gingerbread you will get from kies is more stable then anything in this forum.
There are some really cool froyo roms in the dev forum, but even so, if you don't know why you want to flash your phone, stick with stock. If you know why you want to flash your phone, but are looking for resources to help you. Then look no further then the search button at the upper right side of the forum page on your browser. Google also works.

Well, I'm not here to tell you what to do. Just want to give fair warning that even though the roms in this forum are for the SGH-T959V, you can still brick your phone by not paying attention and not reading all of the instructions to the T.
These mods will void your warranty. Luckly there are services out there that will unbrick your phone and jigs that will help to get your phone into download mode.
Download mode is for flashing with Odin or Heimdall. I prefer to show users how to use heimdall, as it is open-source and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
You can get into download mode three different ways. The first and easiest way is to download and install the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com
After you install it, run 'android' and install the platform-tools.
You should now have a command called 'adb', which has sub commands like: logcat, shell, and reboot. reboot also has options to say to reboot to what. Like
Code:
adb reboot
to just reboot the phone,
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot into recovery, and
Code:
adb reboot download
to reboot into download mode.
The second way is to hold down the volume+ and volume- buttons on the left side of the phone while plugging in your usb cable attached to your computer. After you see the Download Mode screen, let go of the volume buttons.
The third way is a last resort. Use a usb jig.
If you can get into download mode, then you are NOT bricked.
I've also made a Heimdall One-Click that will get you 2.3.6 with ClockWorkMod(aka CWM. This is the SMS KJ6 One-Click on that page) and root. You can also flash the KJ1, which also has cwm and the same KJ6 Stock Rom and root. And last there is the Fully Stock One-Click which will leave you totally stock, and unrooted.
After you have a kernel with CWM installed, you can flash any rom in the dev forum, if it looks like the users of the thread are happy using it. Otherwise, stay away from it, until people say it is safe.
Do not use Rom Manager. It does not work, yet. Hopefully I will fix that very soon.
Anyways. I'm sure others will chime in, but that will get you started... if you want to void your warrenty.

[Q] Help - Need to Recover Galaxy S 4g

Hi guys,
I am new to the forum and in need of considerable help.
I have a Tmobile Galaxy S 4g (not the SII). I had previously upgrade the phone to gingerbread 2.3.6, but last night I was trying to root it again to do a lag fix.
Unfortunately, I think I used the wrong root file - I used something for Galaxy S GT-19000. Now, whenever I try to start the phone it just switches back and forth from the Tmobile Galaxy S screen to the Galaxy S GT-19000.
I used ODIN to root it, and now I desperately need to return it to factory settings. Can anyone help?
I tried looking for original factory firmware, but I can only find it for the Galaxy SII. Would that even work?
Thanks - I would appreciate any help I can get!
Yeah, you flashed something for the Vibrant. If you have Java installed on your computer, then check out bhundven's Heimdall One-Click collection. The first one listed is pure stock. The 3rd one comes with a modded kernel, CWM, root, and voodoo lagfix.

This is just a thought. Some people have signatures turned off. Maybe posting that link would be better. I recently turned them off because of a user that used the largest font available to ask people to suggest a phone for his birthday...yes you read that correct.
I put it in my signature for when I am on the XDA app. Haven't had one person mention not finding the link yet so not worried about it.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the help, but something doesn't seem to be working.
After I enter Zadig and install the driver, I close the zadig window. Then the instructions say to 'flash' once again in Heimdall, and then wait for the android to reboot.
However, nothing is happening. when I flash once again in Heimdall, it just takes me back to zadig to reinstall the drivers all over again. It seems to just be a loop. Am I doing something wrong?
I don't even get to these steps below:
1. When Heimdall One-Click is finished working - your phone will reboot. Linda will start speaking to you. Now you wait.
2. Wait longer - you will sit at the Galaxy S 4G splash screen while waiting.
3. When Linda is finished working her magic - you will hear her say [Voodoo Lagfix is now activated].

You are reading the instructions correctly. After installing drivers it says -
Close Zadig window.
Now back in Heimdall One-Click - select [flash] and wait.
The part you quoted were the directions for after flashing bootloaders.
I recommend you start over - read the directions once - then read them again. The directions and pictures make it very clear. If something is not happening the way it says - and/or Heimdall One-Click hangs up - close it down, reboot your your computer and as I said - start over from the beginning.
Hi Lumin,
Thanks for the help - I'm following the instructions exactly, and I've rebooted my computer. I'm still having the same problem.
After I close Zadig, and then I click flash again in Heimdall. All it does is take me back in zadig to reinstall the drivers.
when I'm in zadig, I have the option of 3 drivers. Could this have something to do with it?
Thanks
Ok - scratch that, I figured it out. I needed to install the winusb drivers, once I did that it was perfect.
If I followed this process completely, do I now have voodoolag fix?
I'm not sure what it means to flash bootloaders - was that needed to get voodoolag fix?
Thanks!
Yes you have Voodoo Lagfix. The guide when yoj need to flash bootloaders. If you get a rainbow screen when you boot your phone - you need to flash bootloaders. If your were on Gingerbread 2.3.6 before your started the guide - you don't need to flash bootloaders.
Hello Lumin, does this methord can work on other Android phone?
Unfortunately not. It was made for the Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V. Sorry.

[Q] How to root 2.3.6 official stock?

Hey guys,
My infuse was bricked so I took it to the shop and got a new replacement device.
It was on 2.2.1 so as I got home I did the OTA update to 2.2.1 (but newer version) and updated it officially via kies mini to 2.3.6 UCLB3.
I have no idea how to root this guy and put Red CWM in it to start using CM9.
I have looked through the "how to root" threads..
I have never used heimdall and I tried once and did not understand how to use it unfortunately..
I only know how to use Odin..
is there a kernel that I can flash that gives root + Red CWM (in Odin) that is required for the CM9?
I saw one poster who said who will upload a Odin flashable root package for 2.3.6 but havn't seen it yet.
Thanks in advance

I just got in and am working now on getting some kinks out of an Odin tar.md5 to make it a little easier to get to a plain stock UCLB3 with root. That has a stock kernel and no CWM recovery, though. That being said, if your goal is to get to CM9, this isn't really what you want. I'm making that more to just have an easy and fast way to get to a rooted, stock UCLB3.
To get red CWM recovery, just flash a custom kernel like Entropy's Daily Driver using Heimdall. Reboot to recovery after flashing this, as that is where you will do the work to install CM9.
Good luck!

Look man,
i've been in the custom ROM business for a while now..(i9100, i777, and the infuse 4g)
i know how to read and search the thread.
clearly I was not successful in satisfying my inquiry.
I've read in this thread (From what my search results tell me) that the rooting of 2.3.6 official update requires the flashing of the proper kernel using HEIMDALL. (As opposed to oneclick methods that i used when i rooted the infuse 4g before i got my replacement today).
So my question is this. Entropy (btw, thanks for all your contributions related to CM9 on i9100, i777, as I have CM9 running on both of my devices) in his CM9 thread for infuse explicitly says i need to be flashing in RED CWM. so how do i get red CWM onto my device?=where can i go to learn more about heimdall flashing? All of the heimdall related threads say that it's super easy but it's not really intuitive to me! Youtube videos don't make sense..T_T
please direct me to a place where i can learn how to properly flash things using heimdall, as i am only familiar with ODIN.
thanks very much guys.
Read steps c.), d.), and e.) here. Entropy's Daily Driver kernel has red cwm.:

And the links that bigjoe was pointing you to also have a lot of the information that you are asking for.

All of the heimdall related threads say that it's super easy but it's not really intuitive to me! Youtube videos don't make sense..T_T please direct me to a place where i can learn how to properly flash things using heimdall, as i am only familiar with ODIN. thanks very much guys.

Quick way to get to the Windows command prompt. Press the Windows key (key with the Windows logo) + the "R" key. When the run prompt pops up, type in cmd and then press Enter. But, yes, that is the command prompt.

Wish you would stop accusing me of not reading when i did read... lol
anyways
to sum up clearly what my situation is:
I found every "tool" that i need,
i just needed a very clear instruction as to how to utilize those tools, specifically the program "Heimdall".
I did download that UCLB heimdall package a while ago and had a look at the things and did not even know where to begin.
For example,
when i unzip the .jar filed named Stock_SGH_1997_UCLB3_Repartition-One-Click", i get a bunch of folders that seem meaningless to me. I don't know where to begin...
and for heimdall version, does it matter which one i use?
the folder named "com" has interesting things inside it, and i have a feeling that i need to do something in that folder but I don't know what. =(
I'm very frustrated because for i9100 and i777 i never had to do any of this.. just flash a custom insecure kernel via ODIN to get root+CWM and then flash CM9 away..
i hope you can understand my frustration

Did you go to the Heimdall link in the steps that I pointed you to, and that you said that you would read in more detail? Because, if you did, you would see that the stuff you just posted about Heimdall one-click isn't even remotely related to what you want to do.
Heimdall one-click packages are based on Heimdall, but aren't what you need to use. Go to the Heimdall link in the steps that I pointed you to, scroll to the bottom of the page, and download the one for your operating system (Windows, right?). Unzip the package, and read the README.txt file. Do everything it says. Then follow the steps that I posted.

you see i've already tried...
when i click "browse" and click the .jar file, it gives me error saying
"Tar header contained an invalid file size"....
Edit: attached pictures of what's happening when i browse and enter the file.
I tried to do it one more time and i saw it decompressing , as the readme says, but then it gives me that error sign again..
Oh okay, so you are using Heimdall, but are trying to flash something in the frontend. What file are you trying to flash? To do what you want to accomplish you have to download Entropy's Daily Driver, extract the package, drill down into the folders and flash the zImage file. Sounds like you're still just trying things, when all you really have to do is this, like in those steps I'm still directing you to read.:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
and then you have red CWM. I'm out, I've got an Odin flashable tar.md5 to finish up.

[Q] Flashing ROM

Ok, so here goes a real noob question!
Although I am not a NOOB, but what I have read just seems a little outrageous.
Ok, So i have successfully rooted. I have seen some posts suggesting the use of ROM manager, and other saying NO.
I have read the NOOB guide, and that seems to be a little excessive to install a ROM onto this device.
Do you have to use the Heimdall method, because I do not have C++ installed, nor do I even know how to use it.
I want to get CWM installed, but I cant seem to find a method for just that.
So if I understand correctly, I have to install a Kernel w/CWM, then I can boot into CWM and flash a ROM onto the device?
I looked on the wiki, but some of the links there are broken, and there are missing files as well.
I really hate ask these kind of question, but I feel that I am really stuck here.
if someone could please help.

If you already rooted, which you stated that you are, then download an app called SGS Kernel Flasher. Then download any kernel you like for whatever firmware you are running (2.2 kernels for 2.2.1 and 2.3 kernels for 2.3.x) and flash with the app, Note- I recommended you flash this one if you are on 2.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513287
Once your phone reboots it should have the kernel successfully installed and you should be able to boot into recovery by powering down the phone completely and holding the volume buttons and the power button

Yes you can use kernel flasher, from market, just make sure you're flashing a ROM/kernel with same os(froyo or gb) you have currently running... If moving from froyo to gb you can use odin
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
dude, why are you worried bout the C++ stuff?
Just download it from here and install it like an app, nothing fancy.
