Microsoft reveals Windows 8 desktop UI changes, drops Aero Glass - Android General

SOURCE : Kickedface
Microsoft has revealed that it has made some big changes to its desktop UI for Windows 8, which includes moving away from Aero Glass — the UI first introduced with Vista. According to the company, this means visual changes that include "flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients." Source : TheVerge

Despite all of these changes with the interface, the company doesn't appear to be worried about the issue of "learnability." Instead, Microsoft believes that with a little help it won't take long for users to adapt to the new operating system. "We will help people get off on the right foot," the company explained in a blog post, "and we have confidence that people will quickly find the new paradigms to be second-nature."
While Microsoft admits that there have been some usability issues with certain gestures in the Consumer Preview, the company says that this is not an issue with people coming to grips with the concept, but instead a problem with the early state of the OS — internal builds are already "significantly improved," according to Microsoft, so we should see an easier-to-use Windows 8 when the Release Preview launches next month.
The post also packs a great dose of nostalgia, as the team looks back at interface issues dating all the way to Windows 1 in 1985. Be sure to check out the source link below for a trip down memory lane.

I like this one. We can change The Color i think..maybe.

surprised to see this in "Android general"
anyway win8 dissapoints me more with every new news, the ui looks washed out.

window 8 sucks

Think you posted in the wrong forum. Anyways I'm surprised they are getting rid of aero. Now that hardware has caught up even low end netbooks are able to run aero on Windows 7, this wasn't the case in early 2007 when Vista arrived. Why axe something that technology has finally caught up with?
I'm seeing less and less reasons to upgrade from Windows 7 when 8 comes out. Windows 7 will become the next XP.

They use the ribbon interface for the explorer. :banghead:
I'd love to meet whoever is responsible for this and personally punch him in the face.

Ok, it looks REALLY great. If it's as fast as it looks, we may have a winner
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/what.s-w...ow-wm7-and-wm8-are-going-to-fix-it-333536.php
What you should make a note of is the things that it improves upon from all the previous ui's of WM past. I'll wait for 8.
When is WM7 due? It's not until 2009 is it?
Detailed picture gallery here as well..
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/06/is-this-windows-mobile-7/
I've gone thru the entire gallery and if its truly able to deliver on what it can do.. Its pretty much gonna be good light years jump from what WinMo and all other platforms short of the iPhone and still good 5 years ahead of the iPhone itself...
They are really going big on movement based gestures and some of the concept is truly remarkable.. like if you see lets say, a name on the browser search. One can then tap and hold on it and start "shaking" the phone/device which tells the device to do a "smart search" where it'll "rain" down a bunch of animated icons that settle down to show the various things/files/pictures/activities related to that name existing in your phone etc... what a simple yet ingenious concept.
Although, I must say that this will open more questions than answers to why did MS have to make this Super-Quantum leap from WM6 and not have given us a good progression to it in the form of already having released such interface in WM5 onwards??!!?? After all, this kind of technology and its implementation could not have just been put together overnight within the last 6 or lets say 12 months subsequent to the announcement/release of the iPhone...
Good Ol' boy wizards Mr. Gates and Balmer holding back as usual I guess...
Oh well.. better late than never.

Will Windows Mobile 7 be available as an upgrade to already existing phones? I just recently bought my tilt and am wondering if I will be able to run this when it comes out? Thanks in advance.
For tilt maybe, but I don't think my old prophet can carry the weight... There was no WM6 update, so why should there be one for 7.
Depends on the Device.
ya i was really greatful at&t baked us a wm6 rom for hermes (8525), is 100% stable and runs awesome, but i still can't wait to try some wm7 fresh from the kitchen goodness!
wonder if the unit specs will ramp up much?

Microsoft Silverlight for Nokia S60!

Wtf!? Microsoft Silverlight will be soon available for Nokia Symbian S60 devices, it will be demonstrated by microsoft in march...
More info: http://symbian-freak.com/news/008/03/silverlight_experiences_to_s60_users.htm
I'm getting more and more frustrated with windows mobile... Now S60 already have Flash Lite 3 (which apparently Adobe won't even develope for windows mobile ) and soon they'll have Silverlight aswell...
Is Microsoft giving up on windows mobile?
No, they're not. Try reading this.
MS are just adding Symbian to it's list of supported OSs, nothing more.
Thanks for the info.
reading the title I was shocked!!!
I was about to get tight and throw my phone into the toilet, but then I read the rest.
I don't know why they're moving so slow when it comes to things like this on windows mobile. Microsoft should of already have a wm version of silverlight out.
and adobe frig them, they could use my socks to make soup when their really cheezy for all I care.
Silverlight should get a lot of market share and pose a competition to flash, because adobe is moving real slow,
I guess then they would speed up the development cycle.
is there any side by side comparison of silverlight video vs adobe video? which has the better quality with the least file size?
does anyone know or have a clue or even a guess on this matter?
Guys, AIR/Flash and Silverlight are very different propositions.
Silverlight is/will eventually plug into .net (according to Bill Gates, who I had the pleasure of seeing at the VS2008 launch in London last month), bringing a huge amount of power to the platform(s).
However, AIR/Flash is light, well established, and will potentially have a massive user base ready to go. Silverlight still has a long way to go there - a solution without much of a problem at this time. Hence, Silverlight being pimped to every man and his dog.
Filesizes etc are a premature consideration at this time. It's likely developers will use the platform that will get them the best exposure with the least pain.
And, as others have observed, in the end, both platforms are likely to co-exist.
But putting Silverlight on Symbian devices is certainly not an abandoning of Windows Mobile - anything that can further entrench users in the Windows environment can only be good for Microsoft, right? Even if that is Microsoft on a Nokia.

V
actually, they're not premature. I wanted to see the video quality on the same video to know which one would give a better view and less strain on the eyes. I do believe file size plays a huge role, well for me at least, because if silverlight videos take up less space and gives me superior or equal quality, they silverlight it is.

I just wish we 6.1 owners can get this update but that's not going to happen.
well greats...for РРС ed. screens will be?
Dated Sep 26, why wait this long to put the screenshots up ? I wonder.....
We may not get "official" upgrades but the kind folks around here will probably find some use for it.
Looks pretty cool!
I do believe that the odds for a free upgrade to 6.5 is possible. Just like 6.0 was upgraded to 6.1, so should 6.1 be upgraded to 6.5.
The only thing that would stop it would be if the device is too slow to handle the new version. But you shouldn't hope for a free upgrade to WM 7
Not to go off-topic but it is dispointing that we might need another upgrade just to get the new mobile IE 6.0.
Most people are of the opinion that these screen shots are fakes - due to the OSX icons being used.
Also, the 6.5 will probably be required for the new IE because of the HTML rendering engine also being used for Pocket Outlook, XML reading, etc.
I *believe* 6.5 should run fine on the current generation of HTC handsets... but WM7 is designed for the "next generation" of handsets - google nVidia's Tegra chipset to learn about this.

Not only that, but the battery and signal strength indicators are transposed on the 2 shots, and it looks nothing like the preview screens of WM7 we've seen. Also, MS like screen layouts to have a logical progression, and that honeycomb layout is rather... chaotic.
It's a photoshop, and not the best on either.
Fake
Fakes for me too
And it's even more simple than that : since when Microsoft put the phone function of these devices in the first place ? Putting Microsoft Media Player in the center of the screen is more correct lol
But there is a lot of other reasons and the first one is : what a new version of Windows Mobile and the first roms are not on XDA ? Impossible, XDA is the best !
I'm making a WAD2 theme based off the second screenshot... it should be done this weekend. (or at least a beta version).

Windows Mobile Marketplace: For Unicorns Only (http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com/f322/windows-mobile-marketplace-unicorns-only-93202.html)

Marketplace is going to be for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones only, not back-ported to Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.0 phones. That's right - the millions and millions of Windows Mobile phones out there today (40+ million I'd say in the past few years alone) will not have access to this forthcoming software directory. Only people that buy brand new phones, or perhaps a tiny percentage that will get a 6.5 upgrade for their phone, will be able to access this. They might as well made it available only to unicorns - both are mythical at this moment in time.

... Apple made the App Store available to not only new iPhone 3G owners, but first-generation iPhone owners, and owners of both first and second generation iPod Touch owners. For developers, that means millions and millions of customers that are only a few taps away from trying, and buying, their software. Overnight millionaires were made by the Apple App Store because Apple put it in front of so many customers at once. This is the right way to do it.

... They finally get around to doing an application store after an early effort got deep-sixed by their own corporate culture, and what do they do? They make the choice to limit it to users of phones that haven't even been made yet - with Windows Mobile 6.5 not due on phones until Q4 of this year, and with phone networks (in North America at least) carrying seemingly fewer and fewer Windows Mobile phones than ever, it seems like the Windows Mobile Marketplace is going to have a rocky start. ... This was Microsoft's best chance to woo developers back into the fold, and they've botched it - badly.

Lastly, some of you may know that an XDA-user initiated a WindowsMobile Apps store some time ago, codenamed "Gecko" (an unfortunate name they just wont give up, despite it heavily branded connected to Mozilla's web rendering engine that's been around for years)

Gecko Development Website
XDA Thread
I followed this for a while, and there was UI development from various contributors, as well as underlying code. Not sure where it stands.

I appreciate all the wonderful information but I'm not looking for it in a consumer capacity. I already have 6.5 loaded and running and would like to see the WinMob Market Place as a "research project", for lack of better words.
I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean by research project?

Will audio MMS ever come to Windows Phone?

Really WTF?, I am amazed by the fact that something as simple as this can not be done on a so called smart phone that is supposed to be leaps and bounds ahead of WM.

I miss sending simple MMS to people and don't see what the big deal is with MS not allowing this, I mean you can send video which includes audio but not audio it's self does that make any sense? I mean they even have apps in the market place that lets you down load free ringtones, are the developers at MS smoking crack?

I would too but I would never go iPhone nor Andriod; I think that if I were ever to jump ship, I would just get a cheap talk and text phone. I just don't get why MS is trying so hard to be like the iPhone when the real competition is from Android
Seriously Microsoft? You can't send video MMS either? What the ****? Jesus Christ !!! What the **** can you do with this phone?

Never say never...come to the dark side lol....why not? they jumped shipped on wm & it users. MS only competion is themselves, they went iphone clone to get beat out by an wm clone, have crappy marketing, dont have alotta devices, & wp lacks many standard features. They shouldve scrapped the windows name and/or had commercials like to they did for pcs showing how easy is it to use.
Not to mention setting up MMS to work for an unlocked Windows Phone is almost like impossible. I think I will regret buying the Radar and will just be better off selling it

I don't blame you, there is a large amount of people that are going out and buing WM devices and ditching WP, if this doesn't open up MS eyes then I don't know what will. For one they need to stop fagging around and stop trying to be like the freaking iphone, 2 they need to get their heads out of the cloud, most people don't want to use that **** and 3 they need to listen to what people actually want, their answer to every question is "That is not possible at the moment".
