[Q] Two Phones, One SIM Card? - Motorola Atrix 2

Okay gang,
I recently fried my Atrix 2's system partition somehow, and it wouldn't load passed the "M" Motorola boot logo. But, after some patience and step-by-stepping through how to use AP Fastboot to install a 2.3.5. script, its now working again.
The question is this: In my haste felt from being without a phone for a few days, and in thinking that the phone was just completely jacked, I filed a claim with AT&T to get a "new" replacement phone.
The phone came today, but along with that came the solution to fic the original back to stock. Now, I have (2) Atrix 2's and the original SIM card from the first is still active, and with the 2nd Atrix 2 came a new SIM card -not activated.
So, can I (or should I) keep both phones and use the first as my rooted "test" phone, whilst keeping the second as an unadulterated "back-up" phone?
I don't want to cheat the system here, but was thinking it mightb be worth the deductible from my AT&T insurance to keep both so as to get more fluent with ROMS, flashing, etc all while having a completely stock 'back up'.
I was thinking of activating the 2nd (fresh) SIM card that came with the new phone and swapping between the two handsets as necessary.
Any thoughts/suggestions/warnings/insight?
As always, thanks in advance for your responses...

Yes., because you can switch phones and keep your SIM... I do it all the time when I switch between my Captivate and my Galaxy Nexus when I was with AT&T.

So, in my paranoid mind, there's no issue between the handset and the SIM card communicating with the service provider letting them know that I have two handsets running off one SIM card at any given time?
I don't want to run the risk of (firstly, and most importantly) insurance fraud, and second having any issues with warranty/service agreement mumbo-jumbo!
I figured this would work, since the Atrix 2 doesn't have Carrier IQ to divulge any of mine or my phone's information, just wanted to be absolutely sure!

With your claim simply say that the phone was lost. And after you got your new phone someone returned it too you....can't be insurance fruad if someone returned a lost phone....can it?

I actually did file it as a "lost" phone. I suppose that I should just activate the SIM card that came with the replacement and use that one -its brand new and has no wear- instead of using the original one to perpetrate my story.
If nothing else, as you said, I could always declare the phone was returned to me after letting some time elapse and after paying my monetary deductible in full. What are they going to do, ask me to return the replacement because of the return of the original? And further, how the heck would they (AT&T) even know for sure?
Thanks all!

Why don't you just be a honest person and return the old one like you are suppose to and keep the new one? With people like you trying to pull crap like that, it's no wonder att and the manufacturers raise the rates all the time.

You guys are right, and I'm sorry for coming across as a scammer about this; like I mentioned: I don't want to cheat the system.
After sleeping on it, I've decided that it IS VERY unethical of me to want to keep both phones, and I will be sending the replacement that AT&T sent to me back to them
Guess I just wasn't using my noggin the way I ought to have... my apologies.

Depends on where you bought the phone. If you bought it from an AT&T store, they are getting more and more knowledgeable. They always check the phone now, and about half of the reps will know if the device is stock or not.
And they WILL notate the account voiding your warranty permanently.
Sorry.
Sent from my latest creation, Thanks Devs!
Rooting your android phone doesn't void your warranty. Now, if you bring me a bricked phone, I may look into it more deeply, but afaik rooting doesn't harm any return possibility. Jailbreaking an iphone is a different story because apple handles the warranty, so we have no say what you can or can't do.
you never know who checks the phone, and its not that big a deal to return it to stock. rooting is actually against atts warranty policy. not sure how samsung would feel. my brothers x10 was actually checked for this by a guy who knew what he was doing. and trust me, you never want to get a letter from att saying you owe em $445 -> http://i.imgur.com/6NVDO.jpg (this was about something different and att ended up regretting sending this to us and ended up owing us as there was no water damage, but still...)

Here in SF bay area att they know. And once they caught you, they might void your warranty and will be on record, so don't suggest this just it be safe. But life is full of risk if you want.

I also agree u never know who is checking these type of things in my occasion I was actually lucky the guy that exchanged my phone knew it was bricked and still exchanged it for me.

My Warranty Replacment Experience

Well, to start off the new year right, my original G2x stopped sending/receiving SMS messages under any circumstances, whether it was on wifi, 4G, Edge, or GPRS. I unrooted it and got a new SIM card, still have the same issue (according to the person at the T-Mobile store, I had a "2G SIM card in a 4G phone.") They suggest a whole new phone, and I agree.
One day later with overnight shipping, I get my new G2x, and the first thing I notice is the LG branding in place of the T-Mobile branding. Ignoring that, I turn on the phone only to see dead pixels everywhere, I don't understand how they could have even sent this one out. I call up customer care and they make me go through the whole troubleshooting procedure, and they decided to send me another one. They also told me if this next one had problems, they'd send me a replacement phone of a different model.
So I'm getting a new G2x sent to me tomorrow. I hope this next one works just fine, or I'll have to get a new phone. Also, what replacement phones do they usually offer for the G2x?
I have been through this process, I'm on my third G2x and CC told me if I ha e anymore problems with my G2x then they will give me a different phone.e... When I asked what them replacement model would be the CC Rep told me they could only exchange it for the Sidekick 4G and I told them I would just deal with the G2x and any problems it my have

yea they offer me a sidekick 4g as well, straight up told them no thanks lol, and also i got a replacement that only says "LG" in the front and not tmobile
Guess they got tired of people trading in just for the Sensation 4g.... disappointing.

Thought I'd follow up on my original post. Got my new G2x in the mail, and it's much better. The screen is flawless (no bleeding!), and it was obviously brand new, it still had the original plastic covering on the screen and buttons. Still has the LG branding, but I think I'll live. Overall, a good experience from T-Mobile.

On the g2x if you hold the power and down button, it should just do a master reset, it's not like HTC where it takes you to recovery (correct me if I'm wrong) but just to make sure your unrooted try to download and use a app that requires root

at&t GAVE me a skyrocket...

Alright so before you get to caught up in the title, let me explain myself. I have been doing some research on which phones that at&t and sammy would upgrade to ICS, the infuse was not one of them. The Galaxy S II Skyrocket however was one. I promptly looked up the cities that have at&t LTE, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my city there. I remembered back to when I owned the awful Motorola Backflip. I hated it so much I used the warranty department at at&t to switch the Backflip out three times before being sent an HTC Aria the fourth time. I decided to try this with the infuse and this time the phone they were willing to supply me with was the Galaxy S II Skyrocket. I thought that sharing this may help some of you who want a phone that will definitely receive ICS. If your Infuse is still under warranty, call up at&t give them crap till they send you an infuse (repeat 3 times) and enjoy your skyrocket the 4th time!

I only had to do this one time. I bought a captivate for $1 back in aug 2011. I got bored with it. In Oct I decided to call att and tell them i had all kinds of problems with the captivate and that i did not want another one and asked them what they could do for me besides me cancel my service. She offered me an Atrix or a infuse. I got the infuse and didn't pay anything for it. I just sent my captivate back in once i received my infuse. You don't have to do multiple warranty exchanges, you have to be a good talker.

The warranty department figures it's easier to deal with lying by just giving in sometimes.
Pretty slick lol
So I called them and told them I was having touchscreen issues which is True I have been. They sent me over to At&t warranty to verify my issue, told them I've done a master reset, I've done recovery and everything, They then stated I was in warranty for a replacement so here comes another infuse. lol
Edit: You DO NOT need the account holders last SSC numbers to get a replacement. Tell them you have a question and they'll say sure I can help you with that, tell them your problem and they'll have to deal with helping you. I advice before you do this, you put stock firmware back on your phone, factory reset it before sending it back as well, Don't bother if your phone has physical damage or water damage as there Warranty exchange seems to be very serious and they will charge you $399 which is the total cost of the phone.

Once we get an official expect to see better roms, Only a couple weeks till we see it.
Edit: I've been thru this process many times with T-Mobile and getting another phone, Refurbished phones are nothing compared to what you got now thats been used for months, Refurbished phones are phones used 30 days or less from purchase and when there brought back they cannot be sold as "New" anymore. Every refurbished phone I've ever gotten was in the upmost perfect condition.

Non-functioning display (works now) vs "Like New Certified Replacement"

So what would you do in this situation. Last Friday my touch screen stopped working. I was getting emails, texts, phone calls (could answer on car BT only), etc. Stopped in Verizon(not a repair center), they pulled battery but no go. They ordered my a rplacement. On Saturday, in prep for new phone, I pulled SIM and SD out. Powered up, and the thing works perfect. Strange huh?
With that being said, what would you do? Keep current phone, which I bought brand new, or keep and use replacement? For some reason, I don't want the refurb. The verizon guy did say that they do send out brand new ones that have the same "Like New Certified Replacement" sticker on them. Anyway to tell if its brand new or refurb? It has an 8/8/12 date on it.
I'm not trying to be rude but, can you see any defects with the phone that make you think it's a refurb? Like scuffs or anything?
If not, that as far as you can tell it's new, why does it matter? If it looks exactly like a new phone than it may be new, or a very good condition refurb. Either way it's still an S3 in "new" condition
Sent from my UNLOCKED Verizon Galaxy S3
Someone once said that any 'void warranty' type stickers on a refurb, like they put over the screw heads, are a different color then they ones on a new unit. Not sure if that is true.
It looks like its new. For some reason I feel if its a refurb, it was defective and then fixed and that is worse than my brand new I bought. Although mine seems to be defective as well.

Dude most cln new replacements this early in the game are brand new devices. Verizon has these phones in stock use common sense the phone has been out for around 2 months now millions are out there there are not enough refurbs to replace everyones defective devices. That being said even if it is a true cln device they are usually perfectly acceptable. If you have problems with it swap it for another.

I don't think the anycut app works for the RTN because I have a CLNR from Vzw and it says it wasn't reconditioned

I recently got a Refurb phone which fixed my radio issues. I'm 99% sure its brand new. You don't get a battery or a back cover and that's the only difference.

Because as stated this phone has just recently been released. There are not enough returns they simply have new devices in stock to replace defective ones. What you got was a brand new device. How are people still not getting this?

some people are getting replacements though, I know mine is. (when the sticker under the battery with the IMEI/MEID is all bent like it was 1/2 pulled off, and replaced on, its a sign...)

"Bra" here seems to be the authority on this topic...j/k
I guess at the end of the day, if there was a way of knowing what they sent me brand new its a no brainer. It looks like there is no way of really knowing for sure, which is no real big deal. My current phone seems to be working fine since that strange incident, but having it flake out last Friday was a nightmare. Having this for work email when out of the office is critical, so I should really just swap it to avoid the incident again.
Anycut will make short cut to veiw rtn this is what you'll see, under reconditioned mine says no

So I booted up the phone they sent me, and it says "safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen. Did some app updates, rebooted and "safe mode" is gone. Any thoughts now on refurb or brand new? I did not boot mine original phone up myself to see if "safe mode" was there on that one. It was done by sales guy at verizon.
Now the new phone is acting really strange. While doing a google backup restore of all my apps, the phone became unresposive. Just did a battery pull, which was required, now working ok.
Could my problem be my sim card? Original problem was resolved when I booted without sim card.
i told you how to check
About 3 weeks ago I got fed up with my ridiculously poor radio and called CS. In the end they sent me a "certified replacement". My certified replacement was 100% certainly a refurb. All the micro antenna covers were missing. The Serial number sticker under battery was two times the size of original and looked like it had been printed on a 1980's dot matrix printer, and best of all, it had exactly ZERO wifi reception, probably the reason it went in in the first place. After fighting with these ignorant A$$hats at CS for another few hours, and being told a software update would repair it, I finally got them to send me another. The CS told me the same BS seen above, about how these aren’t really refurbs yet. I'm guessing the bulk of them aren't, but there sure as heck are some out there, and if mine is any example of their level of technical refurb prowess, then I would be very leery and fully test the device before accepting it as good. I ended up sending them the refurb back in it's same box. Third phone at least worked, seems new, and has marginally better radio so I guess I'm sticking with it.

Anyone Get the Verizon Insurance?

I typically never get insurance, but since I got this phone using my brother's upgrade and will not be able to upgrade again without someone losing unlimited data, I would like this phone to last. I've heard mixed things on the Verizon insurance- some love it and some don't see the need. Also, for those of you that have the insurance, do you have the total equipment coverage? This extends the one year warranty to the life of the phone. I wouldn't get this typically, but coming from a Thunderbolt, I experienced a drastic deterioration of my phone and again, I need the GS3 to last longer.
One more thing, is it easy going back to stock? I am currently rooted and am running CleanROM. I also backed up my IMEI, for what its worth. Can VZW see that I rooted and flashed a ROM, even if I restore it back to stock? I don't want to run into any problems putting a claim in. Thanks!!

I got the insurance, but I have 8 year old twins so I did not want to take the chance of them messing it up when I was not looking.
I don't usually get the insurance cause the phone already comes with 1 year manufacture warranty so I just gotta make sure I don't drop it. And to your second question, yes its pretty easy going back to stock. Just download Odin and the stock ROM and follow the instructions. It will unroot your phoneand WIPE EVERYTHING. For some reason I lost my imei and I couldn't recover it so Verizon replaced the phone under warranty at no charge.

I use best buy geek squad insurance. It's only a couple bucks more a month it's like $10 a month but it last as long as you have the phone. they replace it with a new one not a refurb. No matter what happens to the phone. And I guess if it's out of stock than you get one of equal or greater value.. that what I was told by the rep selling me it but I figured anything is better than Verizon's asuron

I got best buy too. They asked me "do you think you will break the phone, or loose it more?" i think id break it so i choose geeksquad. I heard bad things about it though, like 100$ for a cheap temp phone, and weeks to months to get your phone back. All i know is im not going to insurance intill my screen stops functioning or everything is just shattered. I already have a little circle back light bleeding in ths screen only visible in a dark room

They lied to you. I worked there for 3 years.
The phone goes out to a 3rd party company in Dallas, and that company ships you a refurbished model back that more than likely won't be 100% functional.
During that time of anywhere from 3 business days to 30, they make you take a "loaner phone" which they charge you for.
Don't believe me? Call 1-800-GEEKSQUAD or go into another BBY or call Customer Service and ask.
Refurb. Only time it is new is if the system (called STAR) states the 3rd party company has no refurbs to give. Which happens almost never.

Sometimes if you enroll into an autopay option with your bank and pay every month with your card, the bank will allow for some sort of deductible to pay for a new phone if something happens. I know mine does but I haven't looked into the fire print.

I like the extended warranty since its only like $1 and some change a month. As for the insurance its nice to have, i don't care if the phone is refurbished or not as long as it works. My new phone had a nominal slow speed cpu and my refurb has a fast pvs so yay me!

LOL, good luck with that. not to be a ****, but you will never get a new phone from them, unless they have tried EVERYTHING else first, including sending it out for repair 3 TIMES! (about a month per time) Yes, you will be charged for a loner as well, and yes, it will suck the big one. I would NOT recommend the best buy insurance to anyone. I ALWAYS pushed the carrier, even though it is more.

I worked for these R-Tards in Michigan for 4 years, all in the mobile dept. (can you tell i'm a little bitter?)
I have verizon insurance. It's expensive but I feel better with it. I also have the otterbox Defender case. I am ocd about scratches.
For going back to stock I personally always make sure I know how to put the phone back to the out of box state. It's really easy, just check out the guide in development sticky. Use the G1 Odin link, I think it still works.
Edit: for best buys black tie plan, I broke my Droid x a few years ago, had that plan. Took it in and it took them a month to figure out they couldn't repair it then walked over and got a new one off the shelf. Stupid in my opinion but you do get a new phone.

The vzw insurance is priceless extends phone warranty until you upgrade to diff phone
Another thing unless u drop phone anything that goes wrong is covered in house
The only draw back it's a ***** getting a different device after multiple remans
You will get your due for an update crap

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to get the Total Equipment package. My experience with the Thunderbolt has been a disaster. Those who had the total equipment plan on the TBolt were able to get their phones swapped out for Rezounds (of course, after numerous rounds of trouble shoots and replacement TBolts). I don't think the S3 will deteriorate as quickly as the Thunderbolt, but again it's about being risk adverse. Thanks again!
I got my phone from Sams club and got their square trade insurance through them. $100 for 2 years and only $50 deductible. But they don't cover water damage

I have insurance and also a spare xperia play as a backup. Let's say I switched to my xperia play and they switch the insurance to it. Since there's probably no chance of them having that phone anymore would they upgrade me to a newer phone if I filed a claim? This could be a workaround to the no more upgrades on unlimited data lines
