Non-functioning display (works now) vs "Like New Certified Replacement" - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So what would you do in this situation. Last Friday my touch screen stopped working. I was getting emails, texts, phone calls (could answer on car BT only), etc. Stopped in Verizon(not a repair center), they pulled battery but no go. They ordered my a rplacement. On Saturday, in prep for new phone, I pulled SIM and SD out. Powered up, and the thing works perfect. Strange huh?
With that being said, what would you do? Keep current phone, which I bought brand new, or keep and use replacement? For some reason, I don't want the refurb. The verizon guy did say that they do send out brand new ones that have the same "Like New Certified Replacement" sticker on them. Anyway to tell if its brand new or refurb? It has an 8/8/12 date on it.

I'm not trying to be rude but, can you see any defects with the phone that make you think it's a refurb? Like scuffs or anything?
If not, that as far as you can tell it's new, why does it matter? If it looks exactly like a new phone than it may be new, or a very good condition refurb. Either way it's still an S3 in "new" condition
Sent from my UNLOCKED Verizon Galaxy S3

Someone once said that any 'void warranty' type stickers on a refurb, like they put over the screw heads, are a different color then they ones on a new unit. Not sure if that is true.

It looks like its new. For some reason I feel if its a refurb, it was defective and then fixed and that is worse than my brand new I bought. Although mine seems to be defective as well.

Dude most cln new replacements this early in the game are brand new devices. Verizon has these phones in stock use common sense the phone has been out for around 2 months now millions are out there there are not enough refurbs to replace everyones defective devices. That being said even if it is a true cln device they are usually perfectly acceptable. If you have problems with it swap it for another.

use anycut to make a shortcut to RTN that will till you if it's a refurbished phone

Thanks for the info "DUDE", but I'm well aware how new the phone is. That doesn't mean its not a refurb.

I don't think the anycut app works for the RTN because I have a CLNR from Vzw and it says it wasn't reconditioned

I recently got a Refurb phone which fixed my radio issues. I'm 99% sure its brand new. You don't get a battery or a back cover and that's the only difference.

Because as stated this phone has just recently been released. There are not enough returns they simply have new devices in stock to replace defective ones. What you got was a brand new device. How are people still not getting this?

some people are getting replacements though, I know mine is. (when the sticker under the battery with the IMEI/MEID is all bent like it was 1/2 pulled off, and replaced on, its a sign...)

"Bra" here seems to be the authority on this topic...j/k
I guess at the end of the day, if there was a way of knowing what they sent me brand new its a no brainer. It looks like there is no way of really knowing for sure, which is no real big deal. My current phone seems to be working fine since that strange incident, but having it flake out last Friday was a nightmare. Having this for work email when out of the office is critical, so I should really just swap it to avoid the incident again.

Anycut will make short cut to veiw rtn this is what you'll see, under reconditioned mine says no

So I booted up the phone they sent me, and it says "safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen. Did some app updates, rebooted and "safe mode" is gone. Any thoughts now on refurb or brand new? I did not boot mine original phone up myself to see if "safe mode" was there on that one. It was done by sales guy at verizon.

Now the new phone is acting really strange. While doing a google backup restore of all my apps, the phone became unresposive. Just did a battery pull, which was required, now working ok.
Could my problem be my sim card? Original problem was resolved when I booted without sim card.

i told you how to check

About 3 weeks ago I got fed up with my ridiculously poor radio and called CS. In the end they sent me a "certified replacement". My certified replacement was 100% certainly a refurb. All the micro antenna covers were missing. The Serial number sticker under battery was two times the size of original and looked like it had been printed on a 1980's dot matrix printer, and best of all, it had exactly ZERO wifi reception, probably the reason it went in in the first place. After fighting with these ignorant A$$hats at CS for another few hours, and being told a software update would repair it, I finally got them to send me another. The CS told me the same BS seen above, about how these aren’t really refurbs yet. I'm guessing the bulk of them aren't, but there sure as heck are some out there, and if mine is any example of their level of technical refurb prowess, then I would be very leery and fully test the device before accepting it as good. I ended up sending them the refurb back in it's same box. Third phone at least worked, seems new, and has marginally better radio so I guess I'm sticking with it.
Later,
Jason

Call AT&t Mobility to have Captivate shut down issue resolved with a new phone

So after months of shutdowns and BS from AT&T and Samsung, AT&T has finally come through. I spoke with someone in the "Office of the President" and after checking into the issue, they overnighted me a NEW Captivate (my phone was purchased in August, so I am well out of the 30-days). Their statement was that the defective phones are not supposed to be in the new lots or refurb lots, as it is against their procedures to knowingly sell defective phones. I would suggest taking your complaints there. The number is 1-800-331-0500. Be firm and upset, but be respectful. They will work with you.
I hope this helps to resolve the issues you are all having with swapping out your defective phones with a NEW Captivate.
It will help...eventually. I did the same thing, the first phone they sent me started doing the same thing (worse even) and rebooting withing 48 hours. I called them back complaining and the woman told me they knew of the issues and unfortunately they were recycling the phones that had issues for a while. She assured me this would not happen this time around. They sent me a 3rd one at that time (with next day shipping) and I recieved it on Monday. I'm happy to say I haven't had any problems with it...YET.
We'll see. I could tell the first one they sent me was an obvious refurb (the label under the battery had only one string of numbers and nothing else on it). The one I recieved this Monday was labeled and looked like an actual new one. The other one also seemed to have had a different screen, not near as good of color and would look bad at an angle, this new one seems perfect thus far.
Good Luck!
I still have until July if I have more problems to get even more Captivates as they told me they will keep sending them and will NOT replace for a different phone.
I'm just curious, when you do this, how long do they give you to send the old phone back?

You use the same shipping box to send it back, prepaid. If I remember correctly it's about a week before they will follow up and then after about two weeks you get charged the full price for a new phone.
The paperwork in my box stated you have 10 days.
They tried to talk refurb, but I had already gotten one of those and it shut down on me 5 times the first morning I had it. I sent that one back with a nasty note. This is definitely a new phone, with orginal packaging. The build date is 12/26/2010 (according to Samsung website) and it's a 1012 revision. I am hopeful...

What do you think of this:
I went to a warranty center and had my phone exchanged, only to find out (not until I got home) that the IMEI of the replacement phone also falls within the range of potentially problematic phones.
So, rather than settle for what they gave me, I went back the next day and asked if they had any newer phones or, more specifically, any that weren't in the range of IMEIs that have been identified by Samsung as possibly having the shutdown problem. They didn't, so then I called the 800# and talked to their Android specialist.
The specialist told me that I shouldn't worry about it, since all of the bad phones had been removed from inventory. I found that hard to believe, but was at a loss for what to say, so I ended up doing the master reset and was scheduled to talk to them again to see if that did the trick.
Should I leave it at that and assume he was correct telling me that all of the bad phones had been removed from inventory, or should I force the issue and "demand" a newer phone, so as to avoid possible problems 3, 4 or 5 months down the road (or worse, after the warranty is up)??
Anyone have any first-hand knowledge of whether AT&T took all of the bad-range phones or I'd stock? Anyone been told something similar by AT&T?

I am on my 4th replacement from the warranty department. They have not removed the affected phones from inventory. This 4th phone has it and is going back. I am in the middle of trying to get them to send me a new phone. I had called. they referred me to some specialist and they took my info and are scheduled to get back to me... I hope it all ends well.
Only refurbished phones
Hi,
I talked with android specialist on their warranty dept number, but they are adamant and reiterating that they can only give refurbished phones. My phone is 32 days old. 2 days over their normal 30 days return period
I feel being cheated. Is there a way to do something about it?

Have you tried bringing it back to the AT&T store? They're usually a little lenient about the 30 days.

This phone was purchased from amazonwireless.com. After talking with 3 different reps I was able to convince them to send new replacement phone. But they didn't promise to send me a new phone (IMEI not in defective phone's range). Lets see how it goes with new phone. Else my only option would be to get refurbished phone from AT&T.
Contact the better business bureau, the FTC, and any other complaint site. They actually responded to my BBB complaint - so it may be the best one to go thru.
After my THIRD one I got lucky and when I went to the AT&T store there was a Corp rep there. They didn't believe me at first that the warranty department told me I have to keep getting the same phone, then they called for me. After they found out I wasn't joking I got a replacement...not just a replacement, but a different phone all together (NOT the Captivate). Seems everyone at ATT is well aware that basically this phone has major defects.
Oddly I do know two other people that have one, and they have never had a problem, funny how I had a problem with my original and ALL 3 replacements....Then again, this 3rd Captivate I had when at the att store I found out was actually my original phone shipped back to me again!!! WTF!
Damn, I bought my phone on launch date and not a problem (now that GPS is fixed with custom roms for me )
Looks like those jokers at ATT just cycling defective phones and hoping for customers to just give up on wasting time and stop contacting them.
Thats ATT for you, or any big corporation for that matter.
If it weren't for the custom roms, I would feel similar. Wasn't very impressed after using stock captivate for a while. I'm glad I didn't go through that!

Have her call 877-707-6220 to explain. It's the Executive Level of customer service. I have come to learn that the people in this department can do anything - if you are nice enough to them. And, they are well aware of the shutdown issue.

Third G2X on the way

I have had my first g2x for a little over a week. I really liked the phone, but the screen bleed on the first one was pretty bad. If it was just a little bit of bleed I could of dealt with it. I had flashed over to bionix, and with the black status bar the bleed was horrid. It was hard to make out the status bar sometimes because they bleed was so bad. The phone did not have any random reboots that everyone else seems to have. I wish I could of kept it. I ended up calling t mobile and they shipped a new one.
Today I received my new replacement in the mail. It was a brand new phone. I opened up the box and installed the battery and went for initial boot. The first thing that I noticed was it had a cluster of dead pixels at the top of the screen. If it was one I might be able to deal with it. Although for having a new premium phone I don't necessarily expect it to be perfect, but this was unacceptable. Well then the phone booted and went to the little android that I needed to tap enter. I tapped him, then the phone had a bunch of forced closes and rebooted. I rebooted it and same thing happened 2 more times. By this time I had had enough. I called up t mobile to get another replacement.
They guy that I was talking too asked me since this was going to be my third one why didn't I wait for the htc sensation. I told him the reason I didn't want it was because it was too big, but the main thing is because of the locked boot loader. I asked if they had an actual date for release, but he did not have one. He said he has seen leaked documents on blogs giving a date. But we have all seen the same thing. I also sold my vibrant so I don't have another phone right now. I really like the g2x and want to keep it. I also like the idea of the tegra 2. I am a big fan of nvidia, and their support has always been top notch. I hope I get a good third phone, because I really want to keep the g2x.
On a side note, I re-upped my contract to get this phone at the upgrade price. I was told today that to get new phone and not a refurb I had to extend my contract so that the 2 years started from today. Not that 2 weeks of extension was that big of deal but to me that's kind of ridiculous. It's not my fault I received faulty phones, why should I have to re up my contract. I know its only 2 weeks, but that is just a stupid policy. Or maybe it was just the guy I was talking too. I am just tired of these big company's taking advantage of the little guy for things that are not even our fault. I should not have to re-sign my contract because of faulty equipment. I was half tempted to just return the phone right there and tell them to cancel my contract. Not that 2 weeks will kill me, but for the principal of the fact. Has that happened to anyone else that had to return their faulty g2s's?
Another sob story about this phone. This is bad. Why was this device released if it is such a pile. Where is and what happened to LG quality control????

I went to tmobile website and this phone has so many good reviews. I don't understand because this is also my 3rd one, and I'm about to return it too. If not for light bleeding, then it is for all the rebooting and freezing for no reason. Could it be because all of my phones are shipped from the warehouse in KY...where are the good ones come from? Any idea?

The manufacture date of my phone is only 5/9/2011 so its was not even made 2 weeks ago. It makes me think it cant be a warehouse thing because the phone only being manufactured 10 days ago could not of had that much time to sit on the shelf. I am actually surprised that it can make it from the factory in Korea to my doorstep in 10 days.

Hi,
Mine shipped from KY and its great, production date 4/26. Screen bleed is very very minimal at the top and really isnt very noticeable unless you read these threads and look for it. I had one reboot but that was because I got the phone stuck when trying to stream music directly from the browser and it went a bit bazerk. But other than that this is a GREAT phone. My friend and his wife got one(from radio shack) with no problems whatsoever and so I would guess there is a bad batch around or something.
In regards to the good reviews about the g2x on Tmobile's site, I posted a negative one and it was removed after the first day. I think they clear out the bad comments.
My 3rd was a refurbished..and I've never owned one past 14 days. And I got in from a Rep.
Still after never getting a NEWphone that worked they tried to send me a refurbished phone.
That just really hit me in a bad way.
Unfortunately from the sound of customers who came to tmo from other carriers tmo is better.
That sucks.
I'm going to the sensation. The Rep did not deny the sensation would be here in a few weeks.
Just said they can't confirm until an official date is given.
My g1 was the best phone I swear.

somehow i got a whole "work day" out of my G1....which was from 3am to 3pm. granted i would be in the 15% range at the end of the work day but it did last most work days all day. slower work days like mid week i would carry my car charger just incase, but on weekends when it was busy i would actually be at 30% area of remaining battery at end of same hours due to less use. the G1 was a decent slab of hardware. i sold it to my friend that just moved on to a G2 2 months ago, and said it still worked perfect. I got the G1 about 2 weeks after its retail release.

[Q] Stuck Pixel On Nexus S (HELP!)

Hey everyone this is my first thread on xda and i was hoping if you guys could help me out. So i bought a Nexus S about 2 weeks ago.. the phones great. However, i have noticed 2 red dots on the screen- one close to the top of it, and one around the middle. They are very very small, you have to literally be a couple centimetres away from the phone to see it. I tried a pixel fixing app but that didnt work... Also i went to my carrier (wind mobile) and told them about the issue... they said the best they could do is give me a refurbished phone. I also called up samsung and they said they would give a refurbished as well. Now my question is... is there any way to fix this? If not, should i just get the refurbished phone? And shouldn't they offer me a brand new phone instead of a refurbished one? Please help! Thanks in advance.
i would just stay at least 2.75 inches away from your screen when your looking at it. just messing that would drive me crazy too. But too me it sounds like a hardware issue that probably cant be resolved with software. If its something you cant live with probably going to have to go with the refurb
That blows that when we buy brand new phones they offer us refurbished ones. It's bull**** actually.

Typically, the refurbs are like brand new. They have all the plastic stickers on and everything. While it sucks, it's better than being stuck with bad pixels.
.
So i went back to the wind store today... and since the stuck pixel was very small, they couldnt really do anything... However, they told me that if the phone's lcd gets worse they will replace it. Sounds like a good deal right? The pixel doesnt really bother me much... But what do u guys think?
That would be fine by me too. No need to start war for small, mostly cosmetic issues. Good for you! I think in matter of few weeks, you don't even notice it..

It's rare that more stuck pixels would appear out of nowhere. I'm sure you'll be fine.
With in the first 14 days you get a brand new phone, 15 days and up you get a refurbished. Now what most people don't know is a refurbished phone is not how they used to be back in the days (a used phone just cleaned up) now a days refurbished is a phone someone had but sent back due to them not liking it or it being the wrong phone. 9 out of 10 times the refurbished phone that you get has never been used or used for a less then a full day. When I worked for tier 2 tech for sprint the refurbished phones we sent out were phone someone ordered but got the wrong one. Say you ordered a Nexus S and we shipped you an Evo 3D, even though you never even powered on that 3D, it is now a refurbished phone. Sorry for the long post and my spelling grammar, but I been up for the past 32 hours at the hospital with my son and could really care less to spell and grammar check right now =/

replacement phone is not new?

I just got a replacement for my GS3 since I had problem with the GPS. I'm a little surprised that it's not a new phone but a "Certified Like New" phone. Is that the normal Verizon warranty policy, or I somehow got the short end of the stick? I found out the GPS problem right after the 2 weeks period, that might be why I'm screwed?
The good thing is that I haven't found any problem in the new phone yet. I've run Quandrant, speed test, SD card test, screen test, GPS test. Anything else I should check?

He got a replacement through Verizon they are cln. Asurion when phones are not old will replace with brand new phones. When I had my nexus replaced through insurance it came brand new in the box but you do pay a deductible vzw replacements are free.

Also when phones have just came out in stock Verizon replacments are usually new phones with cln stickers. Pretty hard to have a refurbished phone when its only 3 weeks old.

GPS at least works now, still not great like other people were reporting (lock in few seconds even indoor).
This replacement is actually better than the one I had in all aspects. I had a few minor issues with the old one (a tiny scratch on the screen, a clicking sound when I press behind the volume button, home button sticks out too much), the replacement doesn't have any of those problems. maybe it really is new just with a CLN sticker. Anyway I'm a happy camper for the time being.

True. My bad. OP was warranty and I didn't slow down to see the other poster was an insurance claim.

ha ha take off the stickers when you go to sell it.
It all depends on Asurion's stock of phones. Typically with a phone that was just released they will end up having to send out brand new phones as replacements. As the days move along past the release date more and more individuals have returned them or sent it something that was minor to fix. This is when you are pretty well garunteed to get a CPO product.
The iphone for example has an higher insurance fee each month because the posibilities of them being able to fix whatever is wrong with the phone is much more unlikely than with an android. So the chances of getting a brand new iphone are like 45%.
Just some background as I work for Asurion.
I had the same issue with my gps. I think if it is within 2 weeks of your purchase they can give you a new phone. I was just outside of my 2 years and I was able to call customer service and request a new phone, but since i got it over the phone, they had to charge me for it and would refund it after I returned my old phone. I just shipped out my old phone a few days ago so I don't know when i'll see the refund.

Warning to those with T-Mobile Warranty

Last week on Tuesday I decided to get a warranty replacement, now... I'm well aware that these are refurbished phones and that they can be damaged, etc. T-Mobile, however, assures you that they are to appear "Like-new". Well, the device came the next day as promised and what do I see? 10-12 dead pixels and... spotting behind the screen... like WATER DAMAGE! At this point I'm thinking... "Wtf T-Mobile?" So I give 'em a call, they tell me they'll send out another and that they are sorry for the inconvenience... Well, this time Friday rolls around and the delivery comes... I grab the box and get ready to open it with my Partner, jokingly I say to him... "Let's see how messed up this one is!" and I open the box... Well, the second one they sent has a LARGE chunk out of the MAO in the bottom left corner of the device... like it had been dropped. I'm pissed at this point... I call T-Mobile and because it's a defect in the "hardware" I had to take it down to the store to get a rep to verify that the device was damaged (also still in the warranty box they send out) and at this point they take $25 off my bill and offer me yet another warranty replacement!!! UGH!! So, the new one is coming today... If it's messed up I am demanding that they send me a new one. I'm so upset at this point... My device I sent to them to begin with was damn near flawless other than (from what I could tell) software issues.
What do y'all think? I'm starting to believe they don't even perform these so-called "Quality checks"
Been there done that I had to go through 6 phones. they offered me a brand new Galaxy S 2 . But it's backordered so I decided not to do it

If I even get one more messed up one I'm gonna make them give me a new One S... I bought this phone, I'm sticking with this phone. They WILL give me a new one. Heh. Also, I came from the GSII... Don't do it... the DPI is weird and everything is HUGE on the screen. Lol. I didn't like it mainly because with the default TouchWiz roms you can't change DPI or the UI is all diff sizes and messed up... Now... On custom CM10 roms, etc you can change DPI and it looks amazing at like 200 DPI or so... but back then the bugs were too much to stay on custom roms.
Went through these with my wifes amaze. I demanded a brand
New one s and got it.

what are you going to do if they tell you to go pound sand?
I don't understand why you are warning people about their warranty...they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. I understand the frustration of having to keep getting a replacement, but at least they are cooperative and doing it. ..sounds like a good warranty to me.

they sent me 4 defective replacement sensation 4g's until i demanded a comperable android replacement... after a couple of other rep's and explaining to them why a nokia lumina is not a comperable device then asking for a supervisor they sent me my One S free of charge, I offered to send my sensation back but they didnt send a box to return it in.... Thats a Win in my book. I did have to call back twice to get them to take the charge for the One S off my bill, which they did
Yea, I've never had an issue with T-Mobile warranty...that's how I got my One S...I had a Sensation, then complained enough, and they upgraded me to the One S at no charge. It might be a pain to go through numerous phones before getting a good one, but you can't beat the fact that they overnight you a phone with just a simple phone call, great service.

Your talking about assurion right? cause theyre their own company. theres a big difference. and yea id be pissed to pay a deductible and get a messed up phone. the last time i had my phone replaced by them it was pretty much brand new so im sorry for your luck :/
Im more curious as to why you sent your original back, if all it had was a software issue?

Agreed. Doesn't make any sense. You would figure that since he's on XDA, that he'd try to flash a new ROM, reflash the original, etc, to get it back to normal.
Then again, some people are hardcore about not wanting to touch their phone's ROM. I on the other hand, am absolutely disgusted by HTC Sense and all the fancy pants bull**** it has. Simplicity, minimalism, and speed are where it's at.

It stopped saving screenshots (not a big deal) however, it shortly after started saving all photos taken with the camera as 0byte files. NOTHING fixed it. I even put the phone back to S-On and unlocked, re-rooted, redid the S-Off... Nothing helped. Kinda useless if I can't take pictures. I also tried many different roms.
Also, the warning was to say that if you need a replacement... make sure you can deal with going through 4-5 before you get one that is fully intact. The last one they sent me (#3) had the screen popping up out of the device. You could see the button backlights fron the side if you looked at it, got yet another coming tomorrow.
