I think your confused in the techno terms.
Unlocking is to unlock the carrier. This will permit you to use any sim card from any carrier (that support the standard bands).
Rooting is the process used to remove restrictions. It's the first step needed to flash ROMS, make backups and unlock the phone.
What firmware is your phone ?? 2.2 ?
i want to unlock carrier.
i want to use it with telenor network.
will i able to unlock if i update to 2.3.4? with that one-click method?
---------- Post added at 10:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:23 PM ----------
no, the phone is currently on 2.1 firmware
have a look here:

and do yourself a favor: you'd rather spend a week crawling the forum to know exactly what you are doing (your phone can wait a week, i assure you) than rush things out and do some stupid mistakes that will brick your phone...
thank u for the thread, it was very helpful!!
but it didn't get answer for my question that will i able to carrier unlock my phone if i update to 2.3.4? (this thread is for 2.2)
thanks!
Updating to 2.3.4 is only a software update to the rom , modem and kernel, it doesn't unlock your carrier. There is an internal code which I don't know that unlocks it. I think theres a tool in the market that will unlock your phone but you have to be rooted, which, if your going to be flashing roms you need to be anyway, so, use the search option for rooting and flashing and do alot of reading before you make a one click brick, Sorry I can't be more help.

unlock carrier BEFORE updating!
updating to new rom wont lock you back, however it is much harder to unlock if you upgrade and didnt unlock prior
THANK U!!!
u are the first person who understood my question!
and will i able to downgrade?
(sorry i was an iPhone user, so that's why i so noob, i think different, because this phone fully different from iPhone) but i want to learn it!

The main thing that will brick your phone is mismatched or corrupted bootloaders. Usually this happens in two scenarios:
1. You're installing the Gingerbread bootloaders and something interrupts the flash while the bootloaders are being flashed.
2. You try to use the 3-button fix Odin package while on Gingerbread bootloaders.
In both of these cases, the phone is not able to go through its normal, full cycle of bootloaders, and cannot boot. That makes it a brick - nothing responds at all.
There's some hardware ways around that, but for right now, just be aware that if you do jump to 2.3.4, you'll have to flash the Gingerbread bootloaders, and there is some (small) risk of hard bricking your phone is something goes wrong.
Oh, and once you're on the Gingerbread bootloaders, don't change them unless absolutely necessary. Most of the roms on here will work with the GB bootloaders once you have them in place. Flashing them again is just putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
isn't it safer if i install GB rom from a microsd card with clockwork recovery? instead of odin?

The roms, yes. However, I believe that you'll need Odin to get the bootloaders installed, as there isn't currently a way to do that from the SD card.
Once you have your rom/kernel setup from Odin, though, it should be all SD card after that.
and what do u think is the safest way?
what is ur advise? what if i upgrade through Kies?
upgrade only to 2.2 is safer?
i don't want to f.ck my phone up :S

If you want to go the safest route but still try a custom rom, I would recommend this:
1. Get ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone. If you look in the development section, there is a program called all-in-one (AIO) tool that should help you get rooted and set up to flash roms.
2. Backup everything on your phone that matters - copy pictures/music/anything else you want to keep, use Titanium Backup to back up your apps, and run a nandroid backup from ClockworkMod Recovery (then copy that to a place not on the phone). Those things will help you in case something goes wrong.
3. Download a Froyo-based rom. I know you're wanting to make the jump to 2.3.4, but if this is your first time doing this, I would suggest you go the safer route of Froyo until you've had some experience with flashing. Just my opinion, but Firefly and Andromeda are two excellent Froyo roms, and a good place to start. There's no bootloader flashing involved.
If you absolutely have to go to Gingerbread, follow this guide to the letter. It's a good guide, it has what you need, and it will help you make the Gingerbread jump. But again, I'd say to start with Froyo, then jump to Gingerbread after you're more comfortable with flashing.
3. Take it slow and read, read, read. If you have questions, ask.
And personally, I'd say to stay away from Kies. Samsung isn't necessarily bad, but the Roms developed here are so much better than what you could get from Kies.
thank u!
could u send me a thread what teaches how to upgrade to 2.2 froyo?

Use the AIO Captivate Toolbox. That will take you through everything you need to do to install Froyo 2.2, just go down the list of buttons.
Also look at this thread. That should be helpful.
As long as the i9000 firmware you're interested in has a reoriented kernel (a modified kernel that allows use on the i897), you should be ok - but I'd say just look for Froyo roms in the development section. Those are built specifically for the Captivate, some from i9000 sources.
Just as a quick checklist, here's the process for getting to Froyo (assuming you're on stock 2.1 Eclair):
1. Install the Captivate drivers
2. Root your phone
3. Backup
4. Install Clockworkmod Recovery
5. Download custom rom
6. Run custom rom installer from CWM Recovery
7. Reboot, restore backups.
thank u, i'm starting to understand things
could i find anywhere cyanogen 2.2 firmware? or which custom firmware do u recommend? i don't want battery draining, and i don't want a lot of differences from the original froyo theme

You could do cyanogen now if you want, but there's a bit of a learning curve to it. If you want to stick close to original, you should probably check out Cognition.
wich version should i flash of cognition? i read about it, and i see there are different versions, with do u recommend? is it update kernel and boot loader? so it could brick my phone?

Cognition's earlier version (4.5.3) is the Froyo version, and yes it does flash a bootloader, so there is some risk there. It is, however, very close to stock. If you are willing to go away from stock a little bit, you could try Fasty, which sounds pretty close to stock without the bootloaders, or one of the ones I mentioned above.
Just by sheer volume of people who have installed Cognition, I'd say it's relatively safe. If you want to go even safer, pick a rom with no bootloaders.
and if i download fasty it won't update boot loader?
wich link should i download?
first or second??
Quite simple, need a fast rom and long battery LIFE ,then this ROM is for you :
ROM : Fasty V2.5
Need the latest leaked android 2.3.4 for captivate, modified to be faster and have a impressive battery life:Click Here Fasty II
Just wondering if anyone knows of a place to get completely stock OTA update of ICS from sprint version, I've been waiting forever, and don't want to root. I've rooted plenty of phones, but am actually really happy with this ones performance and just want the new update. I know it's been going out, but still nothing here. Is there anyway to get that update on my phone without waiting any longer, and without rooting? I've done in the past, where I just rename the same as an OTA update would be, depending on the phone, and placed it in the root folder of my sd, and just booted into bootloader, and it did the rest with exception of pressing okay. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I think i can help you out, give me a sec!

This is how I installed ICS when my OTA didn't seem to want to come through, make sure you have the latest version of gingerbread, I can't remember which it is, 2.3.6 or 2.3.7. you can update to these much the same way.
This is for the GSM version, I have no idea if sprint is GSM as I am from the UK... everything is GSM!
Thanks, but Sprint is CDMA. I appreciate the effort though.
Unfortunately it's just not out yet. Even the current selection of roms are all based off the GSM update. Even more unfortunate is there's no news on a release date.
Need help, did somebody revive this update? If someone know about it please tell me what's new on it.
I just received a notification about a new update today. I'm not doing it until know what's in it.

I've been having issues with Wi-Fi staying connected to either home or work networks and have to reboot the phone to get them to connect
I have just yesterday got a replacement phone from AT&T after getting bitten by that boot loop found on certain models. Oddly, it took about a year to manifest. I now have LG 810, with Android 6.0 preinstalled, and updated shortly thereafter to H81022b software. So far, it's been okay, but with all my apps and data gone (I did not root the earlier model, out of fear it would brick my very expensive phone) I haven't done much. I am considering rooting it, but ... I need to make sure it will work right. So far though, the phone has not been acting weird, so it's good, I guess?

You wont be able to root your device as you cannot downgrade from latest firmware.
I read some where on XDAdevelopers (I wish I could find it to post the shortcut), that any phone, you can get the image from your phone then add root to that, and finally flash the new image back on your phone. Is anybody familiar with this? I have read so much looking for away to put root onto my phone, even if it means flashing a rom onto it and then rooting. Or the rom comes with root.
H81022B
I have been reading for well over a couple of months, waiting and hoping there is even a lengthy method I could use.
Hey! Did you ever get your phone rooted? Because I have the h81022f. I think I've got a general understanding of what I'm going to have to do but I need to make sure that that last letter they add on there doesn't change a step or add or subtract something through the method of having to root it.

I had my phone repaired because of the bootloop and when they sent it back to me they had installed 6.0. I followed the LG UP instructions to DOWNGRADE back to 5.0, worked perfectly. If I can find the specific post I'll link it here. But should be rather easy to find, but haven't really been in this forum for a bit.
EDIT: I think this is what I did, under the section titled TO GO BACK TO LP FROM MM

Hi,
Has anyone tried the root method in the link below? Does it work for sprint? Is it really the easiest method? I recently bought the GS8 and am looking for the easiest/cleanest way to root, just to use Wifi Tether. Not interested in ROM, just stock.

Thanks in advance
I would not ever attempt any method that is posted by a click-bait site like this. Just the fact that it still refers to the "AP" field of Odin as "PDA" serves as a red flag that this method has likely been copy-pasted from a very outdated method.
I just came from a Blackberry Keyone, which has a hardware root of trust, which means it is literally unrootable (hence "World's most secure Android") - yet whenever I would Google "root bb keyone" just for the hell of it, I would always see posts like the one you have linked to that just copy-pasted methods for other devices. Don't trust these sites.
These are currently your best options:

or

I highly doubt that if there was a method as basic as CFroot that the people who discovered these methods would have wasted so much of their time figuring it out. Good luck!

FYI proceed with caution! I attempted to root my phone the other day and bricked my device (you will see my post in this forum). I was not running Odin as admin, which is a very stupid mistake, but goes to show that the smallest slip-up can lead to very big problems. Rooting is not as easy as it used to be since our bootloader is not unlocked. Really make sure you know what you are doing before attempting to root this device.
