I think your confused in the techno terms.
Unlocking is to unlock the carrier. This will permit you to use any sim card from any carrier (that support the standard bands).
Rooting is the process used to remove restrictions. It's the first step needed to flash ROMS, make backups and unlock the phone.
What firmware is your phone ?? 2.2 ?
i want to unlock carrier.
i want to use it with telenor network.
will i able to unlock if i update to 2.3.4? with that one-click method?
---------- Post added at 10:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:23 PM ----------
no, the phone is currently on 2.1 firmware

and do yourself a favor: you'd rather spend a week crawling the forum to know exactly what you are doing (your phone can wait a week, i assure you) than rush things out and do some stupid mistakes that will brick your phone...
thank u for the thread, it was very helpful!!
but it didn't get answer for my question that will i able to carrier unlock my phone if i update to 2.3.4? (this thread is for 2.2)
thanks!
Updating to 2.3.4 is only a software update to the rom , modem and kernel, it doesn't unlock your carrier. There is an internal code which I don't know that unlocks it. I think theres a tool in the market that will unlock your phone but you have to be rooted, which, if your going to be flashing roms you need to be anyway, so, use the search option for rooting and flashing and do alot of reading before you make a one click brick, Sorry I can't be more help.

unlock carrier BEFORE updating!
updating to new rom wont lock you back, however it is much harder to unlock if you upgrade and didnt unlock prior

and will i able to downgrade?

The main thing that will brick your phone is mismatched or corrupted bootloaders. Usually this happens in two scenarios:
1. You're installing the Gingerbread bootloaders and something interrupts the flash while the bootloaders are being flashed.
2. You try to use the 3-button fix Odin package while on Gingerbread bootloaders.
In both of these cases, the phone is not able to go through its normal, full cycle of bootloaders, and cannot boot. That makes it a brick - nothing responds at all.
There's some hardware ways around that, but for right now, just be aware that if you do jump to 2.3.4, you'll have to flash the Gingerbread bootloaders, and there is some (small) risk of hard bricking your phone is something goes wrong.
Oh, and once you're on the Gingerbread bootloaders, don't change them unless absolutely necessary. Most of the roms on here will work with the GB bootloaders once you have them in place. Flashing them again is just putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
isn't it safer if i install GB rom from a microsd card with clockwork recovery? instead of odin?

The roms, yes. However, I believe that you'll need Odin to get the bootloaders installed, as there isn't currently a way to do that from the SD card.
Once you have your rom/kernel setup from Odin, though, it should be all SD card after that.
and what do u think is the safest way?
what is ur advise? what if i upgrade through Kies?
upgrade only to 2.2 is safer?
i don't want to f.ck my phone up :S

If you want to go the safest route but still try a custom rom, I would recommend this:
1. Get ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone. If you look in the development section, there is a program called all-in-one (AIO) tool that should help you get rooted and set up to flash roms.
2. Backup everything on your phone that matters - copy pictures/music/anything else you want to keep, use Titanium Backup to back up your apps, and run a nandroid backup from ClockworkMod Recovery (then copy that to a place not on the phone). Those things will help you in case something goes wrong.
3. Download a Froyo-based rom. I know you're wanting to make the jump to 2.3.4, but if this is your first time doing this, I would suggest you go the safer route of Froyo until you've had some experience with flashing. Just my opinion, but Firefly and Andromeda are two excellent Froyo roms, and a good place to start. There's no bootloader flashing involved.
If you absolutely have to go to Gingerbread, follow this guide to the letter. It's a good guide, it has what you need, and it will help you make the Gingerbread jump. But again, I'd say to start with Froyo, then jump to Gingerbread after you're more comfortable with flashing.
3. Take it slow and read, read, read. If you have questions, ask.
And personally, I'd say to stay away from Kies. Samsung isn't necessarily bad, but the Roms developed here are so much better than what you could get from Kies.
thank u!

Use the AIO Captivate Toolbox. That will take you through everything you need to do to install Froyo 2.2, just go down the list of buttons.
Also look at this thread. That should be helpful.
As long as the i9000 firmware you're interested in has a reoriented kernel (a modified kernel that allows use on the i897), you should be ok - but I'd say just look for Froyo roms in the development section. Those are built specifically for the Captivate, some from i9000 sources.
Just as a quick checklist, here's the process for getting to Froyo (assuming you're on stock 2.1 Eclair):
1. Install the Captivate drivers
2. Root your phone
3. Backup
4. Install Clockworkmod Recovery
5. Download custom rom
6. Run custom rom installer from CWM Recovery
7. Reboot, restore backups.
thank u, i'm starting to understand things
could i find anywhere cyanogen 2.2 firmware? or which custom firmware do u recommend? i don't want battery draining, and i don't want a lot of differences from the original froyo theme

You could do cyanogen now if you want, but there's a bit of a learning curve to it. If you want to stick close to original, you should probably check out Cognition.
wich version should i flash of cognition? i read about it, and i see there are different versions, with do u recommend? is it update kernel and boot loader? so it could brick my phone?

Cognition's earlier version (4.5.3) is the Froyo version, and yes it does flash a bootloader, so there is some risk there. It is, however, very close to stock. If you are willing to go away from stock a little bit, you could try Fasty, which sounds pretty close to stock without the bootloaders, or one of the ones I mentioned above.
Just by sheer volume of people who have installed Cognition, I'd say it's relatively safe. If you want to go even safer, pick a rom with no bootloaders.
and if i download fasty it won't update boot loader?
wich link should i download?
first or second??
Quite simple, need a fast rom and long battery LIFE ,then this ROM is for you :
ROM : Fasty V2.5
Need the latest leaked android 2.3.4 for captivate, modified to be faster and have a impressive battery life:Click Here Fasty II
Hi,
I just got another xoom. It has HC 3.2.1. I tried to upgrade using system updates. However, it says I am up to date....
Which xoom do you have?
its the verizon...3g i believe.
Verizons ota updates haven't released ics yet. You will have to to root and install a custom rom.
is there a tool which makes it somewhat easier to root?
How do I find which model ihave? It only says xoom....
I wouldn't be the person to ask on that, sorry. However this is the instructions I used to root mine, and they worked GREAT.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Make sure you read them a few times to become comfortable before attempting it. You can also check out a few of the other guides to see if you can find one you are more comfortable with.
It seems intimidating at first, most of my problem was getting all the up to date software on my computer, the actual process it self was pretty painless.
Good Luck it will be worht it.

does it say verizon in the upper right corner?
it does say verizon...i called motorola...its a mz600.
Well then, there you go, if you want ics, you will need to root your xoom, or wait til verizon releases it.
Hint...
Wipe, Wipe, Wipe.. Factory Reset Just did an MZ604 and had issues cause I didn't follow the instructions....

So I had my Verizon HTC One M8 rooted and that was enough for my needs. I didn't mess with it further.
Well then Verizon started pestering me with update notices for... what was it? 4.4.3? Anyways, I got sick of them and hit "OK" next thing I know my phones in a 1 to 2hr upgrade cycle with no warning. I was on call for my job! Then, when it came back all my root apps were disabled... you know the story.
So the only option to re-root it was sunshine.
Now I'm getting pestered with the same notices again to go to 4.4.4
They are really bad. I can't even unlock the phone. They are in your face and obnoxious. I can't get rid of them. I don't want to let Verizon make my phone even worse. Any advice that doesn't leave me shelling out $25? Can I call Verizon and pitch a fit? I DO NOT WANT THIS.
You can install a custom ROM and those popups are blocked automatically. I recommend the new Clean Rom

I cannot install a rom. I lost Root with the last update and do not have S-off. I didn't even know what S-off was until that update. It's extremely irritating to have to keep up on this nonsense just to own a smartphone.
Sunshine should have given you S-OFF. Also, you should be able to run Sunshine in the same phone again without paying again.

If you used Sunshine on 4.4.3 you are S-off and bootloader unlocked. If you currently have root you flashed a custom recovery and then SU, right?
So you have everything in place to just flash a rom and be done with it.
Scrosler's CleanROM is just like stock, but de-bloated of most of the VZW and some of the HTC bloatware.
If you want pure stock flash his stock rooted 4.4.3 rom. Nothing changed to the original firmware except it's rooted and the SD write protection removed.
No, I did not use sunshine.
It was the only option, I did not do it. I'm poor.
I was hoping there was some option to gain root without it. If not, I'm just screwed.
I am s-off and on Viper ROM and I am being pestered with the update as well. It even downloaded it for me without me knowing. Then it forced me to select a time to install it so I had to pick 12am so I have to figure out how to dodge this nonsense, i am waiting for the newe Viper to update to 4.4.4

Just flash this until the next update where that nag will be removed.
No more nags...
if you're still on 4.4. 3 use weak sauce to temporarilyroot then use a root explorer and delete your OTA updater files or rename them. and I'm not positive of this but from what I thought I understood it depends on your hardware version whether or not firewater will work and that is the free s off version.this is my first HTC device alsobut I am a root user so that is what I look for in the only way to have permanent forever root on an htc is to S OFF when you first get the devicethen it doesn't really matter what happens after that you can always flash su to get root on any new update after you flashing your recovery..
and just FYI no none of this is necessary just to own a smartphone only if you're trying to be smarter than your smartphone then in that case I guess you have to work for it ie free hotspot or IE ad blocker ect. and everybody here already understand those types of benefits involve maintenance and your own research and time especially with the latest devices. sorry is it just me butI had already read most of the m8 forum by the time my MA got here I researched very thirdly on which phone I even wanted to get which ushered me capability and S OFF or permanent root before I even purchased the phone and already knew the wrist before I even took it to the computer for root for the first time. good luck ..bTW if you do get temporary root and want to move or rename or delete the update file that you downloaded so it will not actually go through it is in. /cache/fuma . just search how to disable your OTA updater per the firmware you are on with and do while you are running your temp root.

It sounds like smartphones may not be for you, get a old dinosaur phone and you won't have to "deal" with updates.
What do you think pitching a fit to a CS rep will do? They don't have some magic button to stop your phone from receiving updates.
Either take the time and learn more about flashing and rooting and do it yourself or pay the people that have taken the time to figure out how and ask thoughtful questions to other people and get help along the way.
Advice: Sell your phone on Swappa and get something that's already flashed with cyanogen, or accept the update and suffer through the horrible indignity of allowing your phone to be updated to 4.4.4 and getting the stock flashlight that should have been there already.
Need help, did somebody revive this update? If someone know about it please tell me what's new on it.
I just received a notification about a new update today. I'm not doing it until know what's in it.

I've been having issues with Wi-Fi staying connected to either home or work networks and have to reboot the phone to get them to connect
I have just yesterday got a replacement phone from AT&T after getting bitten by that boot loop found on certain models. Oddly, it took about a year to manifest. I now have LG 810, with Android 6.0 preinstalled, and updated shortly thereafter to H81022b software. So far, it's been okay, but with all my apps and data gone (I did not root the earlier model, out of fear it would brick my very expensive phone) I haven't done much. I am considering rooting it, but ... I need to make sure it will work right. So far though, the phone has not been acting weird, so it's good, I guess?

You wont be able to root your device as you cannot downgrade from latest firmware.
I read some where on XDAdevelopers (I wish I could find it to post the shortcut), that any phone, you can get the image from your phone then add root to that, and finally flash the new image back on your phone. Is anybody familiar with this? I have read so much looking for away to put root onto my phone, even if it means flashing a rom onto it and then rooting. Or the rom comes with root.
H81022B
I have been reading for well over a couple of months, waiting and hoping there is even a lengthy method I could use.
Hey! Did you ever get your phone rooted? Because I have the h81022f. I think I've got a general understanding of what I'm going to have to do but I need to make sure that that last letter they add on there doesn't change a step or add or subtract something through the method of having to root it.

I had my phone repaired because of the bootloop and when they sent it back to me they had installed 6.0. I followed the LG UP instructions to DOWNGRADE back to 5.0, worked perfectly. If I can find the specific post I'll link it here. But should be rather easy to find, but haven't really been in this forum for a bit.
