[Q] USB no detection Club - Samsung Infuse 4G

I've read so many posts about USB woes and no PC detection. So now I'm officially a member of the My PC wont recognize my Infuse anymore club. I've tried so many cables, PCs, laptops in many combinations and nothing. Often the phone wont even alert me that I am connected via USB.
So my thoughts are that I troubleshot this to the best of my abilities. Cleaned the port, contacts points etc and still nothing.
I got my phone in August of 2011. And of course I have a great custom ROM running on it now and I cant return to stock!!!
Oh and add to that I have issues with SIM Card detection errors, lost contacts randomly and crappy sound during calls on occasion.
So here is the question...Who do I call ATT or Samsung??? And do I tell them its rooted and running a custom ROM or not admit it (will they find out). Will this cause me to not have any warranty support?
Should I just count my loss at this point and get a new phone out of pocket maybe upgrade to a newer phone... Gxy note, Skyrocket, HTC one X or S3???? unlocked on ebay or ???
Really at a crossing point here and unsure of next steps. Be gentle on me folks this aint easy to fess up on my lack of repair, warranty, return process skills!

Maybe I should just ask Who do I call for warranty support?
The local AT&T store suggested that I call Samsung as they never heard of USB port problems.

Go to an att store and ask where there nearest exchange center is. Then simply tell them what's wrong. If your scared if they will deny you because of the rom, then just brick it by flashing random crap to get no recovery, then they can not really tell unless if you were on gingerbread bootloaders (even then most employees dont get what the numbers mean). Make sure if you want back up all the data to the cloud or use bluetooth to connect your phone and computer to transfer data over. Remember to act stupid like you don't know what happened and you never heard of odin and such.

Cool. Thanks! I visited the store yesterday and they really seemed to push for me to call Samsung. Trust me "acting" stupid comes naturally! LOL

No problem. Happened to me too... except i wanted the data off it and i completely bricked it, so i headed over to mobiletechvideos and he figured out my usb was broken. He tried exchanging the usb hub and it did not work. Another user found that somehow the voltage was screwed up and running the wrong way, that is probably the cause. I think i was the first person to have this happen to me, it was late last year. Anyway do not take to sammy, they would probably turn you down, they have gotten pretty tough with devices lately, unless if you reset the bootloader. With this experince from sammy, im very tempted to go with the one x for my next phone. Installing custom roms are a pain on that thing, but then again it actually works a lot better the first time around, instead of installing a custom rom.

Yes the One X is very much in my eyes. And I hear you in out of the box performance rather than the need for custom Roms!
I'm hoping that I can convince AT&T to allow me to move up even though my contact ends next year, i've been a customer seems like forever.

Dunno about you but I've seen like 3 people post about it ever... And there is always two answers; either your phone's port is broken or you need to learn how to flash ROMs.

Well, since I know how to flash roms and there are several with this issue not just three as you suggest, I'd rule in favor of it being an inoperative port.
The original question was inquiring for return/warranty recommendations and not to solicite judgments of ability or lack thereof.

Thanks for the exchange center suggestion. I went to a different store (device support) and they were fully aware of the USB port issues on many Samsung devices. They, without hesitation gave me an exchange and tested it before I left to ensure all was ok.

Thats good. And idk, maybe i can get some help on this withoit opening another thread? Anyway, would you upgrade and get a one x, or get the tablet asus tf300? For high school they recommend getting a tablet, but idk maybe i could use the one x as one? Idk.

That's a tough one for me to answer. My wife has the HTC One X and loves it. I can't say it could replace a tablet. Maybe the SS Note?

im in the club too. phone wont connect to usb for charging or for transfer. have tried with several cables (that work with other phones/devices) but to no avail. Since i bought this phone on ebay will i be able to go to att for a replacement if i am on an att prepaid account. what are the chances of fixing this by replacing the usb port as i have read about users not being able to get it fixed after doing this.
as for now i have resorted to an external charger. it works but a solution to fixing the usb would be much appreciated

But as of last month, my usb is not working, returning it is out of the quiestion( im in europe) so im stuck with cwm flashes only. Btw Ryan i did test the wires with a multimeter and i get +Vcc on a wire that should never have voltage running trough. I opened the phone, checked the jack and the pcb, everytning seems factory like, so im screwed...

I removed everything that I could and when I returned it. They tried to upload a stock rom and it would not connect at all on their set.
All they were concerned about was the moisture indicator for water damage and physical damage-cracks battery contacts etc. I really played dumb as heck and asked dumb questions.
The tech told me he didn't care about custom roms since in fact the issue was a known problem with the USB port and that was what they were replacing it for.

Did you consider maybe sending it for repair? Or is that not an option? I have a link in a few posts back.

Total brick... can AT&T tell

O.k. so I totally bricked my Inspire. I tried to partition my device with CWM via the ROM manager, and apparently there is/was a bug in it that gave it a bad repartition. This completely bricks the phone (and has been discussed widely on the Desire forums).
So can AT&T tell, will they even look. The phone has absolutely no reactions to any button, they would have to maybe re-flash it just to get it to boot. Will they look for a hardware fault, will they simply determine it was a critical failure and replace the guts and put it back into referb stock. How much actual time do you think they would put into researching/validating?
Sure on a semi functional phone they check s-off and firmware versions, but there is no access to that info on this phone in this case. I know there are no guarantees, but what are your experiences?

I am running leedroid as well... (I read your post) and I didnt even fool with anything more than installing the ROM.... I tried the radio flash through ROM manager gtg download section, but it didnt work.. you know I have great data speeds and good phone quality, I'm not gonna risk bricking my phone because I wann "try" to get better speed.. when infact it might get worse..
I remember back in my g1 days people used the excuse that they was updating the phone and it got stuck..maybe that will work since there is an update still going around

Really? Far as I know ROM Manager only sets up partitioning for SDCARDS, not the device.
Can you point me to the other threads that discuss this in more accurate detail, because I can't find them with my evidently feeble search ability?
Its in desire HD forum somewhere, supposedly koush fixed it with the new clockwork recoverys, but there is LOTS of bricks in that thread. I think he was using an old script for repartitioning, and it was calling the wrong partitions to repartition. I believe it was supposed to repartition the external SD which would be dev/block/mmcblk0 on a g1 or older phones, but on our phones that happens to be internal flash memory, which results in unrecoverable brick.

Cut the USB Cable Strip the wires on the end. Plug the micro end into the phone attach a battary charger to the wires flip switch. let it cook for a few. Unhook it and return it. Toasty. This is fraud, but you are talking that anyways... ...
I bricked my Aria trying to flash a new Rom. Since it was still under the limited warranty, I called HTC. They give you a tracking number, you send it in, and they diagnose it. If it falls under the warranty then they repair it free. Otherwise if there is water damage or physical damage they'll tell you the cost to repair it or you can just have them send it back to you with no repair, but with a $39 charge. If your Inspire does not turn on at all then you should have no problem getting it repaired. Good luck

Instead of trying to return the phone, why doesn't the OP find someone locally who he can pay to fix it? I had a similar screw up last fall, when I was trying to root my Droid X. I found a "for real" cell phone repair man and he fixed it for me. Cost me $40.00, and the guy gave me a finger wagging lecture on the dangers of rooting your phone. Since I had by that time figured out what I had done wrong, I took the repaired phone home and rooted it correctly, and it's still running fine today.
There *has* to be a shop or a person in the same city as the OP who can fix that phone for a fee, and that's the better solution. Yeah, it costs money, but it's also a case of "You broke it, YOU fix it".

Who knows what the the OP is going to do? Yer suggestion is a good one if he doesn't live in BFE Oklahoma...I do not suggest he commit fraud. But I love when ppl fry stuff with battery chargers.

LOL! I need to clarify something - I wasn't trying to direct any criticism towards you or any of the other posters, I just hit "quote", and yours was the last post. The thing that gets me personally upset is the people who post on this and other forums, saying that their rooting or ram installation froze their phone, they think they bricked it, and now they want to give it back to AT&T or Verizon and claim it's defective.
Nowhere is there a *hint* of "can someone help me find a shop in Baltimore, Maryland who I can pay to fix my phone?" - not a thought of "Well, *I* screwed up, so I guess this is going to cost me some money to fix". They seem to feel that rooting their phone (which voids their warranty) falls under an "accepted use" exception and that the service provider is obligated to give them a new phone for free, in a kind of "do over".
When I bricked my Droid X last fall, I knew that I'd screwed-up big time, but it never entered my mind to take it back to Verizon and claim it was a defective phone. The thing was fine out the box, Verizon and Motorola didn't screw up, *I* did. But that's just me, and where I'm coming from.

Mike ur a good man. I feel ya. I was flashing my vibrant and while it was writing system,it died. It wouldn't do anything and was totally bricked. So I decided to work with it instead of blaming the companies. Finally I learned odin and managed to salvage the device.

You're speaking of a concept that is all but lost these days, that being personal responsibility. It's big brother accountability was killed same 10+ years ago.
Folks don't like when the consequences of their choices bring an undesired result. I could go on and on bu I'll end the beginnings of a rant right here.

Well, that's my point - there was no indication that the OP made any effort what so ever to fix it himself, or to pay someone to do it, if he couldn't. It came across as "Damn! Well, back to AT&T for a replacement." Personal Responsibility...

Lithium Ion batteries have pre-programmed circuitry in them that measures the range of current. If current outside of the pre-programmed range is introduced, it simply will not charge.
So...with that said, the only way to make this method work, is to use...say...a car battery charger. Something that will spike the current at least 5 to 6 times higher than that of the battery. Otherwise the circuitry in the battery will simply stop it, and allow it to "pass-through."
Now...while we are on the subject of fraud and "frying" electronics... Put it in a microwave for LITERALLY 2 seconds. Anymore than that, and you WILL be caught once the device is inspected. This is not enough to melt any circuitry on the phone at all, nor harm anything physically. The microwave essentially is like hitting the device with an EMP. ;-) (EMP = Electro Magnetic Pulse)

Having Withdrawals Already!!!

Ok so today I mow my yard and I plug in my Thunderbolt in to the USB charger on my PC when I come inside my phone is bootlooping. So I think ok whatever I will flash one of the many backup's I made.
So I pull the battery and boot into the bootloader, then when I go into recovery after about 2 seconds the phone powers off and starts bootlooping again??? Ok that's a first for me and I have been flashing and rooting since launch day of the OG Droid, (ok, ok not since the first day but like a month later). So I pull the battery again this time for 30 minutes because I read someone else had something like this happen yesterday. When I put the battery back in same thing! Now I pull the battery for 4 hours...same outcome.
Now I'm thinking RUU time so I grab the stock RUU pull the SD card from my Thunderbolt pop it in my Incredible load the RUU renamed to PG05IMG.zip and put it back in the Thunderbolt. Load the bootloader and flash the RUU. Reboot after it's done and would you believe it...the same thing! the phone won't load past the splash screen before rebooting.
I forgot to mention before trying all this I tried using adb to reboot into recovery and I kept getting "error: device not found" and I know how to use adb.
It's only been about 9 hours since I've been able to use my 2.3.4 GingerBread with parts of 3.0 Sense Thunderbolt and I already having withdrawals how am I going to make the next 2 to 3 weeks while it's being repaired???
Ok end rant...
Go to verizon, swap it for a new one. Warranty case for sure.

I understand your rooted but if it cant boot up then there is a problem. Just go to verizon and show them. Once they see it cant boot properly they will exchange it or overnight one to you.

You may get away with getting it swapped through warranty. But I can't promise you it won't come back at you. Someone may have a solution for you though. Wouldn't give up yet. Sorry I don't.

Well then relate your problem with his. Just saying "your losing faith in Thunderbolt" tells me nothing. Don't mean to sound like an a$$, just saying. When I read your first comment I got nothing from it.
That being said...I haven't been a Bolt owner for long, but it does seem like a strange issue. You would think flashing a radio or backup would resolve the issue. But hasn't.

Definitely sounds like a Warranty Issue. I'd try to get it exchanged if no one can come up for a solution to the problem.
I had a G1 back in the day that had some odd problem and I was rooted, Tmo looked at it and wouldn't touch it. So, I called HTC. I told them that I purchased the phone off Craigslist so Tmo couldn't help me, and asked how the warranty works on their end. They said that since the production of the phone started less than a year ago, they knew it was still eligible for warranty even without a receipt. There would be a triage fee if it was found to be a non-warranty issue, and it was something like $40 including the shipping back. I acted dumb when they asked if it was rooted...asked them what that meant? LOL. Sent it in, they fixed it and sent it back to me, no charge. Fast too. I was very happy and that is why I have stuck with HTC since then. It may or may not work for you, but it was painless for me.

They don't care. Take my word for it. If it never boots they won't care.
I'm actually having this exact same issue. Has anyone found a solution yet or is the only solution to have the phone replaced?
Wow. I thought for sure hbooting the unsigned stock RUU would fix this. How about hbooting a signed ruu? It wouldn't hurt at this point.
Also make sure when you renamed the pgimg05. Zip that there was nothing at the end of the extention. I've heard some people say that windows has been known not to show that full file extension correctly.

I thought hbooting the stock RUU would fix it as well, and yep it was named correctly. It's funny because it would stay on the hboot screen as long as I let it with no issue what so ever but within 2 seconds of going into recovery it would reboot.
I went back to Best Buy today as that is where I bought it to see how much they would charge to ship it out to be fixed. The mobile manager remembered me because I was 1st on the pre-order list. (I'm sure we all remember the train wreck the Best Buy pre-orders became) So any way he really went out of his way to help me. He said he has had 3 other Thunderbolts brought in for the same issue. He was able to send my phone in under their Black Tie program.
I told him I rooted the phone and was willing to pay for the repairs but he said he was pretty sure that the other 3 phones were not rooted. He said that he knew FOR SURE that at least one of the phones was not rooted because the lady that owned it did not have any branches in her family tree, (his words not mine). Since he has seen it 3 times he was not charging me. He only asked that I had the stock hboot on the phone. I had already flashed that in my attempt to get it running.
I'm with cstrife, I managed to destroy my tab with a mix of flashing and charging via outlets in India. It bootlooped for a while then just kind of gave up and began to display a strange download screen when I plugged it in to charge. I brought it to VZW and played stupid, I told them I woke up and it had this weird screen... I had a brand new one at my door the next morning and haven't heard a word from them... It probably just costs more to check it out deep enough to find out its rooted than it does to just give you a refurbished one, gut swap yours, and then send to someone else as a refurbished one...

[Q] Should Verizon replace my phone?

I was running cm7 on my phone, and was throwing on the audio fix to get better speaker volume, which sent the phone into a boot loop. I tried to put my phone into hboot (power+volume-) which it does not. It tries to boot every time. I've tried probably 50+ times and same result. I'm guessing it has to deal with the poor built buttons on this phone and the volume down just does not work. My question is despite the fact I'm rooted and running cm7, am I safe to say this is a hardware issue? I just don't want to send in my phone to Verizon and get billed for the fact the phones "tampered" with.
Should verizon replace your phone after you borked it? I think you already know the answer

long of it, no they shouldn't. will they? who knows, depends on if you tell them the truth or not.
Should they? Technically no. Will they? Sure. They would be happy to.
but he didnt break it if the loop comes from a hardware defect,all he did was get it to fail sooner than later basically what happened to others,so technically yes they should,or can anyone prove the software killed the hardware.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if anyone can prove the software did it or not. He voided his warranty by rooting. But they likely will replace his phone, driving up the costs for future phones.
You rooted your phone. Take it for what it is...a non-warrantied phone.

I will start off by saying I don't have a solid answer but being as it is a hardware problem they "should" fix it. Will they? Probably not. They'll take one look, see it's rooted, and tell you that you broke it by tampering with it. All bets are off as soon as the phone is rooted...unless you can unroot and take it in I think you're in trouble but since the button is broken you can't do anything with it. Good luck and let us know what you were able to get done.
I see what you guys are saying from a moral standpoint. I'm just angry cause I know for a fact my buttons are not up to par to what they're supposed to be. I don't want to fraud the companies over something that is my fault, but in this case I'm almost positive it's related to the fact this phone was not built too well. I dunno, do "authorized retailers" handle claims with faulty hardware or just official Verizon wireless stores?
This is why you should have ADB installed and working on your computer. Hook up the phone via USB, get into ADB and reboot into recovery. There are a few threads out there for ADB you should be able to find them using Google, hopefully that will be able to help you.
If you can get into the boot loader with and then you might be able to save your phone.. Maybe, not clear take your as card out and import the rhi, they might work...

if you can prove that the failure was not caused by rooting, then they should fix it for you under warranty. but that is hard to prove.

Just say you tried to install the last update and your phone wont boot now. They won't know the difference.

Caused by rooting or not, there is NO warranty once a phone is rooted. Has nothing to do with what caused the malfunction.
ADB reboot bootloader or recovery should work though, as long as he catches it with the right timing during the loop.

Well update on the situation. I called Verizon telling them I can't turn on my because it "freezes" when it tries to boot up every time. He told me to try a hard reset (try to go into hboot) and I told him I tried that at least 30 times and it won't. I said I think there's something wrong with my buttons because they're not very responsive and stick really easily (which they do) and he said they're overnighting a phone to me. That was yesterday, its waiting for me at home. I'm gonna send my old phone back asap.
I'm wondering, if they have a way to find out I'm rooted, will they charge me for the phone? I don't think they'll be able to though because if I can't get into hboot, how will they? I tried adb into bootloader, but as many times as I tried, no devices were found.
you're probably aright since they might just get it and toss it in the "to be refurbed" bin. It costs a lot of money to test every return. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

If they do find out, they will charge you. Don't know if they will, but be prepared for the worst.

Congrats on getting a new phone I guess.
I have noticed Verizon has been VERY accomodating with these phones. One call is all that's needed to get a new phone. Im guess they're so generous because they devices have been so finnicky so far and they just want to keep people pleased for now.
I envision them cracking down hard sooner or later though. They're not stupid. They've already come down on tethering and such, so it probably wont be long until they get hardcore on replacements.

and he takes your calls... and this is what he told me. Anything covered under insurance (Asurion), they really don't check/don't care about rooting. VZ, on the other hand, will look pretty extensively if it's covered under the warranty. They will look for rooting or anything else that would break warranty coverage.

Infuse DIED!

Well after reading the latest GTG V2.2.2 thread changes today I decided to give it a go as I have really been having a ton of problems with my phone since new. Mostly battery issues but also weird stuff since loading Infused 2.1.0. I had loaded 2.1.0 twice after going back to completely stock but the weirdness persisted. So I backed up all my stuff tonight and then fired up Odin and loaded all the necessary stock files from GTG's Ultimate Unbrick which i have done many times. It started right up and then it stalled trying to establish a connection and this has never happened before. I waited a while to see if it would just go anyway but after 30 min. it was still sitting there and had not done anything in regards to loading up any new data to the phone. So I closed Odin and hit the power button on the phone and it came back up with an icon for phone to computer connection so i tried Odin again and once again it started up and tried to load files to the phone but again stalled and sat there. So i waited again for a while and then stopped everything and pulled the battery hoping that the phone could be brought back into download mode but unfortunately it is completely dead now. No lights no power up nothing??? So I guess I got my answer to my constant problems and strangeness it was the phone itself that wasn't any good. So now i have to go to the store tomorrow and negotiate a replacement phone I sure hope the fact that I spend a ton of money there with my clients corporate phone account will get me some good will and they will just swap it out for a new one. We will see as i really liked this phone it just needs some fixing.
I am a bit bewildered that AT&T/Samsung would release a phone with so many bugs in it. The completely stock phone was buggier than all hell and was only marginally better once I updated to a custom rom. The bluetooth has never been right from day one stock or custom it would constantly disconnect my headset and the GPS was the crappiest phone GPS I have ever had and I have had a bunch of them in the last few years. Here's hoping that the GB update fixes and resolves all of the bugs in this very nice phone.

I guess so E but man this has been the worst phone from a performance standpoint I have owned in a lot of years I sure hope it is just a matter of a lemon. By the way I see you live in Owego NY is that the same as Oswego? If so do you do any fishing up there???

Yeah you have a crap phone. But since you modified the software (god forbid on something you OWN!!!!) Samsung or AT&T(/Rogers) won't touch it. They probably have something to scan for modified software at the door that will shoot you in the foot if you try to walk in.
I've used unbrick at least 5 times because the 2.0 Infused ROM kept messing up my phone. Worked perfectly every time.

Actually, from my understanding, they don't really question you if you bring in a phone to be replaced. If nothing else, do like what everyone did when the Galaxy S line came out and tell them that it crashed during an OTA update or when you connected it to Kies. Or tell them that you were having issues with it freezing up a lot recently and when it frozen the last time, you pulled the battery and it wouldn't come back on.
There is no reason for them to everyone know that you had custom software on the phone.

Have to agree with Entropy would say u just got a dud.
Had no issues getting my phone replaced after installing custom rom on it. Went the extra step and soft bricked it and made sure it wouldnt boot past samsung screen before taking it to store. (My micro USB was borked) Had to wait on replacement phone but they sent me home with my phone and unbricked it and used it till new one arrived and bricked old sent it in and never heard anything about it afterwards.
I've used this method many times and never had an issue. (May not work if you get zero lights, etc, but worth a shot)
Just make sure you're not on Windows XP

You might have killed your battery. I assume you need battery power to enter Download mode. If someone more experienced then I can confirm this then take your phone and battery to your local ATT and ask them to test your battery.

Hey, if you are trying to get rid of this, I could use it for the UnBrickable Infuse 4G project. I am looking for a dead board so I can remove the processor and map out the xOM pins. This will let us flash crazy stuff without any sort of reprecussions.
Please consider donating the board to the good of the forums.

Would have sent it to you no problem except that i need to return it to AT&T to get a replacement phone. Sorry I couldn't help.
I went to the AT&T company store that I do all of my bsiness with both personal and corporate. I showed my AT&T girl the phone and that it was dead and would not power up. She tried another battery as I also had done and still nothing. So she tells me becase the phone is over 30 days old i have to go to the device support center to get a new one or call in and they will ship me another phone. Well I couldn't wait for them to ship one as i need my phone for work so I had to drive 35 mi. to the device support center to get another phone. Just strikes me as stupid that they cannot just give me a new phone right then and there. When I got mine I was short of my upgrade period but they gave me a conditional upgrade or something and the phone cost $400.00 so I was pretty pissed off that they were just going to give me a refurbed phone considering what i paid for the damn thing. Actually I didn't pay for it myself one of my clients picked up the tab but I still felt like they really stuck it to me not giving me a new phone. I spend thousands of dollars at their store every year with all of my client purchases you would think they would cut me some slack and give me a new phone???
Anyway I got a "new" replacement phone and it seems to be working fine. The GPS worked far better than my original Infuse right out of the box with the Froyo ROM and UCKD5 modem. I also did a speed test with three bars and got 2735 Kbps Down and 319 Kbps up and it said I was on EDGE?
So I just rooted it and i am going to load up the Infused 2.2.0 and manually install the newer modem and the camera fixes. I am going to hold off restoring most of my apps until I use this one for a few days to see how it performs first.
Oh and the girl at the AT&T support center told me she had to replace my battery because it would not power up the new phone. So it looks like I had both a bad phone and the battery also quit the farm at the same time.
I had issues with my first infuse (I'm in FL) and completely blasted it to the point where it would literally not even respond to any button presses soft/hard or otherwise. It was DEAD! COMPLETELY DEAD...I was very sad. Anyway I was within 30 day startup period and they did full replacement no question asked. I told my local att store it froze and I pulled battery and it wouldn't come back on. They acted like morons and gave me a replacement but i feel like they knew what I did. Didn't say anything though.
Needless to say. I take my time now with these custom roms. Rockin Infused 2.2.3 and loving life with my GB and 30fps.

[Q] Stock Inspire constant Shut Down

So my wife is out of town and i just got a frantic call from her on her moms phone telling me that her Inspire is constantly been shutting down.
We live in Texas and she's visiting family in Ft. Lauderdale since before Christmas. She's said since she's been there that the phone has been acting wonky, but starting today the phone will not stay powered on when not on the charger.
When it's on the charger she says she has 80% battery life, but when she unplugs it and tries to do something with it the phone powers down.
She's done the battery pulls, she's cleared the cache and removed unnecessary apps. I'm really not sure what to tell her other than go to AT&T and get a different battery, and fi that does't work - plug it into your laptop, copy all of your pictures and necessary data then do a factory reset.
Any other advice from more experienced members?
Sounds like your on the right track. You could try downloading the ruu from HTC as well and do a clean install. If all else fails just do a warranty.
I had the same problem. It was the battery, bought a new stock HTC battery and it works perfectly don't try a reset or any of that. You will lose you're stuff, tell her to just charge it until she can get it replaced I kept mine on charger for 4 days until I bought it and got it in the mail. Phone works perfectly now

It was opened about 4 months ago, and has been working fine until she went to Florida. She has had battery issues though since she go the device back in February.
She said the AT&T person tried to do a factory reset and that "it wouldnt take" which i found was odd. More than likely the AT&T person was doing it while the phone was on, rather than doing the volume down + power button to load into recovery and do it that way.
Anyone know why a factory reset wouldn't go through?
Selecting it through the phone just boots into hboot to finish the process, but if the phone is freezing and powering down it would probably keep it from completing. Try it through hboot. Did the att guy at least test a different battery in the device? Some of those att employees really shouldn't be helping people troubleshoot. Too bad they aren't all as educated as zel.

They didnt even entertain the idea of a different battery. They took the battery door off and could tell that it had been opened. Right then and there they basically sent we can't help you because it's out of warranty and HTC will charge you full price for a new phone, but then whispered to her that she could go to a local shop.
Needless to say i was a little pissed that they wouldn't even let her try a different battery.

That is one of the risks of Modding your phone or someone else's. All support now relies on the phones owner.
As for the rep. He couldn't do anything without possibly losing his/her job. I used to work for them so I really can't blame the employee.
Now for her prob the only thing I would suggest is that she get another battery which may or may not be the issue.
Why was it opened? If you don't mind me asking?

Tx Redneck is correct. As I stated the screen had to be replaced.

By the rules as much as I hate to say it. Yes. If they see that the phone was modded they cant even allow the use of another battery for testing. I normally kept a few extra personal batteries to help people out but had to do it off the clock. ATT is very strict about it.
I was written up once when I was helping someone with an issue and my boss looked over my shoulder and noticed the sticker was missing. HE asked me if I noticed and I said yes i did but it had nothing to do with what I was helping with. He took the phone, handed it back to the owner, said sorry there is nothing we can do for you. Then sent me home and when I came back in I was written up with a final warning.

Yeah it does. No prob.
Once she's returned from her trip i'll come back and post whether or not i was able to fix the issue or if we need to procure a new phone.
