Okay guys,
I've tried the v6 supercharger and it didn't really help me too much. Even though I believe that modifies these files, I was curious if maybe tweaking them further would do anything.
Just got done reading this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622666
Decided to try messing with these values. The file in question is "lowmemorykiller" located (from the root dir) at sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters. You'll obviously need root and a file manager that has root and editing capabilites.
Opening this file will display 6 numbers seperated by commas. Each one of these refers to a minimum amount of memory assigned to different types of programs, processes etc before the memory manager will automatically close them.
My default numbers were:
7746,9720,11694,13742,15715,24709.
If you read the post in the link above, it will explain what each of these memory limits references. Don't change anything until you've:
A. Backed up your original file!
B. Understand exactly what you're doing (read the link above!).
For those that want to help me with this, try changing all of your values to the ones listed below. When you're done, the file should simply look like this:
2048,4096,5376,9984,11776,13312
Save these and see if it helps at all. I've noticed a bit better multitasking doing this. Most things like the browser or games are still loaded in memory when navigating back to them. I've noticed a few oddities, but overall I think its a slight improvement. Some apps still reload, but dont completely restart (such as the xda app). If nothing else, this is something we can start tweaking to find the perfect values for.
I AM NO DEVELOPER. That being said, I try to help myself and others as best as I can. Hopefully together we can all figure this out
Something to note: like the author stated in the other post, these values will probably be reset to the default values upon a reboot. This could theoretically be fixed by running an init.d script.
Dunno if this is anything or not, but I got tired of reading about the multitasking problems and wanted to at least see if there was anything we could do on our own.
PS this MIGHT be in the wrong subforum. Apologies if so mods!
EDIT: Use the autokiller app in the play store. Should make this 1000 times easier. Thanks for the (obvious) idea Tikerz! I should have known there was an app for this Make sure to check the "run on boot" option under preferences to preserve your changes!
EDIT #2: Found the default minfree numbers for both versions of the one X, as well as the stock ICS numbers:
STOCK ONE X AT&T:
7746, 9720, 11694, 13742, 15715, 24709
STOCK ONE X TEGRA:
8192, 10240, 12288, 14336, 16384, 20480
STOCK ICS 4.0.4 VALUES:
8099, 10132, 12165, 14213, 16245, 20295
These numbers are far too close to be the culprit, but there are at least two other files (that I've found) that control multitasking, as well as certain things at the kernel level. Gonna see what I can dig up...
To make it easier, try AutoKiller from the Play Store. I don't have a One X, but am curious to know if changing the lowmemkiller values would fix the multi-tasking issues on a rooted One X.
1. Those values will make it incredibly easy to run out of memory and you risk having more OS crashes by doing so.
2. V6 supercharger probably needs special mods in order to work right on ICS.
any suggestions as to what some better values would be? Like I said, I'm just experimenting until someone who knows more might chime in. I plan on continuously tweaking these just to see how it affects things
EDIT: Trying the "system default" memory settings inside Autokiller seems to be working pretty well so far. Gonna keep messing with it.

I've got mine set to 8, 16, 21, 39, 46, 52 in AutoKiller. Or 2048,4096,5376, 9984, 11776, 13312 in pages. Multitasking is slightly better, but still far from perfect. I had originally set it to 8, 16, 21, 20,22,24, which yielded a much greater improvement to the multitasking abilities of the phone, however app performance suffered in some games.

Yeah that's what I'm currently running too. Seems to help a bit at least. Looks like it's finding a balance between multitasking and available ram I guess... Thanks for the input.

try use titanium backup to disable sense apps,
use a third-party launcher (nova launcher)
use system tuneup to adjust auto-kill memory level
it should help
What was the default HTC setting on the One X?
Well I posted my original numbers in the first post, but those might have been modified from running the v6 supercharger script. If nobody gets back to you ill factory restore and let ya know when I'm home later

I'm about to redo supercharger as well since I loaded 1.82. Fyi, I came across an app called no bloat that'll let you freeze or uninstall system apps and also back them up automatically when you uninstall. Other real nice thing is that it remembers these apps and creates a blacklist of apps so that if you factory reset, it's a one click to uninstall all of them again. I use to use tb for things like freezing and uninstalling but this has been really helpful.

Fyi, default values for 1.82 are 7746,9720,11694,13742,15715,24709

Thanks for confirming those for us.
What are the best values to put mine at?
Sent from my Awesome HTC One X using XDA
I dunno if there are any "best" values. Just something to experiment with to see if it helps you. Try downloading the app autokiller from the play store and setting the values to the "system default" setting from within the app. These aren't actually the settings currently on your phone and they seem to help a few people at least a bit. Let us know if it helps you.

Forgive me for asking the obvious, but you've granted the autokiller app superuser privileges? The modified settings stick through a reboot just fine for me...
Maybe try uninstalling and re installing the app? Sorry man, I'm just having trouble reproducing this.
EDIT: have you gone in with a file explorer and checked the values manually?

they're fine right now, but i ran the supercharger to set on boot so i'm assuming that changes them every reboot. might just get rid of the supercharger script as i haven't noticed much improvement
ah there ya go. Give that a try. I'll bet that'll be what it was. Let me know if this helps at all. This was just random (wishful) thinking, and mostly just something to mess around with to see. You might benefit from trying different values too

This topic is intended for those few Motorola XT720 users.
As you well know, Motorola, in their infinite wisdom, have created a gimped phone that seems to have mostly problems about it rather than advantages.
For a start, they have underclocked the CPU from its possible theoretical maximum of 1GHz to a paltry 550 MHz (and the update only unlocked an on-demand setting of up to 720 MHz). Secondly, the included launcher is actually inferior to both stock Vanilla Eclair and most other 3rd party launchers. It is sluggish and never quite feels smooth (especially so when browsing your apps or switching panels).
So what is the solution to the above problems and how to make your XT720 truly fly and feel comparable to most any other high-end smartphone? Simple, I say!
I won't tell you how to do these steps, but I can provide info and know-how-to if people ask me to:
0) Install Astro File Manager from the Market.
1) Root your device. Use Universal Androoter to do this. Try to go for latest possible version you can find. Your phone will not be able to find it on the Market so try Google.
2) Go to http://code.google.com/p/milestone-overclock/ and download the basic program to overclock your XT720. The program allows you to do 'real' (actual) overclock of up to 1.2 GHz, but your CPU will be unstable in this speed. Instead, opt for 1GHz, which is not a 'real' overclock, since the Texas Instr. CPU inside your phone is actually able to run at this speed natively.
3) Download SetCPU or get it from XDA.
Have it 'automatically' configure / find your CPU speed and then set it up as such:
Make sure the upscale governor is set to at least 85. Mine is at 86.
a) Fully Charged / Plugged In: Min/Max at 1000MHz (Performance) [55]
b) Below 40% Min 550 / Max 1000 (On Demand) [60]
c) Below 20% Min 500 / Max 550 (On Demand) [65]
d) While Screen Turned Off Min 150 / Max 500 (On Demand) [70]
Make sure all settings are set to 'Enable' and 'auto-run' is checked.
4) Download Zeam Today Launcher from the Market. It is free. Install it and press Home. Try it once to be sure and safe, but afterwards make sure you set it to 'default' (so that it launches as the default launcher).
Restart your phone and voila. Enjoy XT720 as you never have before.....
I have an HTC Desire and a Samsung Galaxy S and I promise you that my XT720 feels (almost) as snappy as they, and that's a huge difference in improvement, given that I felt that the XT720 was one of the sluggiest phones I had ever have to experience! Now it can finally unlock its full potential.
EDIT: Realised I accidentally posted this in the wrong subsections. This was done unintentionally. Please can some mod move it to the 'General' section?
Thanks for your post, grcd! Just some questions...
Do all 0 to 4 have to be done, & in that order? Or can I choose any?
What is Astro File Manager for? Is it needed to do 1 to 4?
Edit: ok, so 2 & 3 need root. But are 0 & 4 necessary or only recommended?
Edit: ok, I can choose among different file managers for 0, & among different launchers for 4.
& I can't find a single appropriate page on universal androoter on google? Except your post.
Edit: oops, found universal androot! Sorry, noob
very usefull
thanx
My friend just got one of these and I've been trying to find some good resources but can't seem to turn anything up.
Are them any development forums for this model out there? And are there any custom roms out or is the stock rom, rooted, overclocked with cleaned up the bloatware the best you can get?

XT720 bootloader is locked and currently there's no known method to attack it. So, no custom ROMs. For Optimization, check the below link. You'll need to root your phone first (either One Click Root via PC or using Universal Androot apk).
this optimizer script got Busybox, Apps2SD, JIT from Froyo, custom build.prop, removing unnecessary apps and custom themes.
Code:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-milestone-xt720/74284-guide-milestone-xt720-apps2sd-froyo-jit.html
App2sd is a must, the internal memory for this phone is too small. I even put a class 10 micro sd in it.
Thanks for the optimization link, spiderx_mm! I'll do that too but it will take me a bit longer to be confident in doing that.
Meanwhile, the overclocking++ advice above seemed to help at the start, but little by little, my XT720 was lagging again, & lagging longer & longer. Does this happen to others?
I'm also encountering weird problems, like Dolphin Browser HD 4.2 tabs reloading from the web even for conditions when it's supposed to reload from the cache. So I'm also trying to reverse the process tio isolate the problem, but I have a few questions.
Once the setcpu modifications are done, can I unroot? It seems to me no, because I would think root is needed to change the clock on the fly? But if I simply overclock without using setcpu, then it seems to me that I can unroot without undoing the overclock changes?
While at this, is there an important sequence to follow to reverse the whole process? Do I have to set setcpu to the clock that I want to revert to before reverting the clock? I would experiment on my own except for the risk of bricking
Tia!
@grcd Will this improve camera response and hd video recording quality?
@spider thanks for the link. I'll give that a shot. I'm assuming since it hasn't been done yet, that no one is working to unlock the bootloader?
@reggie you will most definitely need to retain root to use setcpu. The app setcpu is what's actually changing the scaling itself, that's why there's the 'set at boot' option, bc the app has to set it everytime. Because the kernel just has overclock capabilities, but not overclocked by default, you will always need setcpu or a similar app to do the actual overclock. Why would you want to unroot anyways? If your having issues, I would recommend using system panel for a few days and see if somethings bogging your system down, it has great monitoring functions. I've yet to do the optimization, but I can't imagine anything there is what's causing you to have lag issues..

You can replace it with any other file explorer of your like and choice. The basic idea is to get root, and using Universal Androoter is the only way I know of for the XT7220 that is user friendly. Afterwards the rest is simple, using the overclocking app and SetCPU.

I noticed that too, so my initial excitement wore off. It seems that I was a bit wrong and some XT7220 devices will not happily run at 1GHz without some lag issues. Try lowering your speed to the next step down and see if that helps -- this might mean running at 800MHz, which is a mere 80MHz overclock, but whatever).
The optimizer script might help speed some things further up. But I haven't tried it yet. Also, Apps2SD will definately help as the phone has little internal memory, so the more apps that are there then the slowest things will get over time.
I am not sure of the ways to unroot to be entirely honest, but I guess you have to check FAQs for Universal Androoter to see if the process is reversable. As about the rest, it is quite simple: Just uninstall SetCPU (it might help to return the clock to its normal speed, but uninstalling it will do it anyway I suppose), and then use the Milestone Overclock to return the speeds to the stock speeds. Then uninstall that too.

AFAIK it will not. Or it might, but the differences are negligible. I am afraid that unless there is a custom ROM or a complete kernel hack, significant improvements in the camera department might be hard to come by.
It's very sad how badly Motorola dropped the ball with this phone. I admit I gave up on it and sold it to a friend for cheap.

The Universal Androot app has 1 click unroot.
I am currently compiling a list of anything that can be safely removed w/o creating an unstable environment.
Any help is appreciated, any programs that you may know that are safe to remove or any that have caused your sys to crash, please share.
-AppPack4.0.88
-EA Games 1.0.16
-Nova 3.1.1
-Polaris Office
-SmartShare 1.0
-TegraZone
-Telenav GPS 6.2.6201050
-WiFi calling [when removed, caused a FC loop for said program. I forced a reboot and everything is good now.]
I've taken off the safest and what I felt were no question asked safe... My experiment comes in to the unknown, like the GooglePartners one or the android.providers.applications and the like. If you have any info about these unknowns or maybe know of a place where I can get get descriptions of said files, I would gratefully accept it. My biggest fear are any issues it may cause that aren't apparent, but at the same time, I want to strip this down and get any unnecessary crap off, especially if it could be what's causing the system to not allow me to access the web w/my current data plan...
Also, if you see something on the list posted as safe or unsafe, but you had a different experience, please share. By cross referencing, I think we can get a more accurate list here right off the bat.
Car Home, TeleNav, Wifi Calling are the only ones I deleted so far.

Along the same lines, is there any way to get a file explorer type program on Android? so annoying not to be able to move stuff around easily.

Root your phone and download Titanium Backup. Besides backing up apps, it has a plethora of other options it can do. Removing apps is one of them.
I believe I've already covered this in one of my earlier threads from about a week ago. I listed the actual APK file name and its common name.
I had like 11-12 deleted.

Yeah, a link would be nice because I know I didn't find it w/a search prior to posting this thread. I'm all about keeping forums clear of excess clutter, so link us up.
As far as I know, the names on my list were exactly as they showed on TB including the build. Mine may not be as complete, but it included what the the required info which, for the most part, was the same as the "common name" as you put it. Sorry, but that one sentence just seemed a little pretentious to me.
By the way, did you get adventurous w/ your deletions or is the basic TMo and the like? I was looking to start trimming some more dangerous fat from my phone, just waiting for a time when I'm not going to be rushed, I expect to have to do a few restores.
**found the post, the list is only the *.apk's, but for the most part, again, you can tell what is what, so even if you're not using RE or a similar program, you should still be able to figure it out w/o issue. It's a great post for someone new to the Android platform, more of a bulk, little bit of everything post. Hit it up.

I think of it this way. Just about everything that is in the app drawer that is not an actual system app is safe to remove long as you of course use common sense. Obviously you won't delete the browser market phone camera settings etc. Half of the stuff in system/app is straight forward. Google frame work and calendar etc is obviously not good to delete. But the stuff like cmwallpapers is extra bloat you nay never use. Most of it is common sense. I learned the hard waybthay some apps are not to be touched and that's what a nandroid backup is for.

Indeed it is better... ive used setCPU for since i first starting modding, and recently a friend turned me onto SystemTunerPRO & i gotta say its a million times better!
OC's ALWAYS stay, never gets killed by the system, UV's correctly, and has awesome organization!
Has the ability to controll what apps launch on boot, control memory usage, edit the MinFree settings, adjust the task-killer, just wow... yeah too much to say.
I suggest this WAY OVER setCPU... you should check it out...

1. task killers kill your battery, not your tasks
- by killing tasks, you are forcing android to kill then reload applications that would normally save more battery by being left in system memory (this removes the need to reload data)

4. system tuner is a heavy user of system resource...the ONLY feature i've found that it has that others dont (at least i havent found a replacement yet) is its ability to display current CPU frequency...i used system tuner pro alot when i was undervolting my cpu and stress testing so i could see how hard the phone was working
The *Nix philosophy: Do one thing and do it well. I used System Tuner and found it's interface to be awful/ugly, and didn't really fulfill any need that a more focused app didn't. System Tuner really can't do all the things TiBu can, and voltage settings should never be "killed" by your phone since they're written to file.
I still prefer SetCPU. I like an app to be organized and the one you recommend is not. It's messy and sloppy.
There is NO backup app that comes close to being as perfect and bad ass as Titanium Backup.
Can't get STP to save on reboot completed
Hope this thread still attracts some attention, so I don't have to clutter up threads with a new on on same program
Using Bricked V5 kernel and Insert Coin Sense 4 Beta 12 ROM
Both STP and Antutus' CPU Master do not save selected settings (max / min speed, voltages etc) over reboots, although this is selected (on STP have "on boot completed" selected, and on CPU Master it's a tickbox as with SetCPU)
Only SetCPU saves my preferences over reboot.
Can anyone tell me how to overcome this. In particular I want STP to work over restarts, so I can tweak voltages as well as clock speeds
Edit: Oh dang I found this thread searching for STP, and overlooked it is a Samsung thread,. Doh!. Will repost in Sensation forum

TB dev started developping this app when Android started existing and receives a lot of support from Google. Yes it's far more advanced: the only feature that STP doesn't have (yet ) is the multi-version backups.
Messy and sloppy... Maybe, a matter of opinion and taste. No question on that.

Interesting... Have you contacted the devs of those apps to see if they can help? When you tested these, did you kept all 3 apps installed and configured?
I believe everyone is entitled to have preference, but know one thing for all 3 devs it's the same complexity: every kernel, every phone behaves differently. Not to mention ROMs or even possible user errors.
And as you have a Sensation, STP was partly developped on this device, and this device requires a specific work-around to be able to read and write CPU settings!
If you do want STP to work and are willing to spend a little time investigating, contact the dev I know him and he will do everything to help (I know cause it's me).

2 philosophy: some users prefers all in one apps, some prefers app that focus on one thing.
My 2 cents: the more apps, the more consumption you get. The worth example is apps reading battery data... If you have one that reads it ok, if you have 5 apps: 5 times the consumption.
Noted a user saying a task killer is bad: if you know how to configure it it's much better than the Android integrated one which will kill widget apps at will and blindly or even apps you use frequently but will always leave Google's app running even you never use them!
And STP can configure its own task-killer and the OOM Android integrated one.
STP is less than one year old, and is only my second app in Java and on Android. Still a lot to add to it, and still some imperfections, but working on it.
Now I fully understand all opinions expressed here. They are very reasonable too.
Let's meet in a year from now and see if I can change your opinion on this.
In the mean time, enjoy your apps or my apps preferably
I have grown to like all in one apps, such as this (system tuner) there is another that I'd like to point out called ROM toolbox, I use it for everything, back up apps, root browser, ad manager, boot animation installer, voltage controller, mem controller, ect. It's nearly got a function for everything, and I think people should take a look at it, it's nice, and all my stuff would be lost without it

Looking for tweaks for system tuner pro.
I'm using system tuner pro on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and really enjoy it so far. I also use Titanium Backup and SetCPU which both do exactly what I need them to. I use stp mainly for the ability to monitor my cpu, memory, ect. I am looking for tweaks to set to get my tablet running even smoother. Right now I'm running stock HC 3.2 ROM with pershoot's kernel oc to 1.4ghz. What can I do in stp to optimize my settings further? Changes to governor, on demand? SD cache size and IO scheduler? That type of thing. I would appreciate any helpful tips especially since the developer has been on this thread and seems to be very helpful. Thanks.

Thanks was looking for a site to learn more about this app! I am a new user to the andriod platform and find this app a great resource. Thanks for the great app and keep up the great work. :good:
Cheers
p.s. I have the Pro version
Great App thankyou .
I'm new-ish to using this as my main control app, although I bought it over a year ago,but unless your almost Of dev standard it can get a bit confusing, it's looking and is easier to use now smart phone screens are alot bigger.
I do still use T.B for certain things it is already setup with old backups and cloud feature use,I realize this app can do most but I've always used T.B.
Anyway my question probably easy but I'm using a dual core cpu but can't find how to change cpu1, I can change cpu 0 and see the frequecies for both but only the sliders for cpu0!
I've just thought my phone is rooted but locked bootloader so maybe because I'm using stock kernel maybe it's only letting me change 1cpu?
Its not even showing sliders for 2nd cpu though . e
Any help appreciated.
I'll probably need more help but I want to get this sorted 1st .
Since I stopped using multi task killers ,auto memory killer pro,cpu control (set cpu ) n so on, now using System Tuner Pro, Juice Defender Plus and Tit Backup Pro that's all I'm able to find then address issues so much easier.
Also Dev is very helpful ,I left Comment on play review and was emailed within a day ,so thanks A1 customer service .Thank dev and any one who can help me.
thank you for your mind bendingly difficult work on this app!

DEEEZZO!! Damn Dogs, yall just got served! HAHAHA:laugh:
seriously though, I know this is an older thread, hopefully someone listening. I had some questions about what a few thing meant in system tuner pro...which I think is a super hero app. I have only recently discovered that my lg thrill is a power and complicated device, even though I,ve had for over a year. before it was just a really cool phone. 11 times-i bought another one so i wouldn't have to worry about not having a phone-half a dozen of those times was exploring system tuner settings. while I am a pro at flashing and recovery, i know virtually nothing about my device, and would love to know what some of these settings do. how to optimize her for each of the different ways I use her. that said, what is the difference between default and recommended setting in sys con?

The default is what's been configured on the Kernel installed, either by manufacturer or dev on XDA. The recommended is actually some settings that have "proven" to work on most devices. Make sure to have a NANDROID backup or a way to recover in case it doesn't work for you. Once applied you can review the changes (they appear in blue) and reset them as you wish. It also resets completely on reboot to be safe, until you press the 'on boot' button to restore them on each reboot.
PS: If you like System Tuner, you might love Android Tuner, the merging of System Tuner and Battery Monitor Widget. If so there's a special offer/discount for existing users.
In the market? Or can I purchase direct from your site (preferred).
What is the function of the I/O scheduler and the difference between noop/deadline/cfq?
BTW, I don't just like STP I love it! I'm constantly fiddling with it. Seems like a very complicated project. I will get the other after I submit this post and check it out. Thanks bro!

Most of my apps can only be purchased on Play Market for now. Android Tuner is available on SlideME now, which offers various payment methods (PayPal, Amazon, etc).
I used to sell on AndroidPIT, but they are very bad for business so I stopped, and I would strongly recommend not to purchase with them, only means troubles. SlideME offers guarantees like on PlayStore, which AP doesn't.
That said, I might publish my other apps on SlideME if it turns out well.
As for IO scheduler, it's the way the kernel will organize (schedule) IO operations on SD cards, noop, deadline and cfq are the most frequently available and used. deadline is said to be the most effective in a multi-tasking environment, whereas noop might create lags in some circumstances. Opinion and experiences differ largely, so might be best to test them.
PS: I would be happy to sell direct, but that requires an infrastructure I don't have. Relying on PlayStore or other distributor makes it easy to publish and also distributes updates.
Thank you sir, the only reason I was wondering about an alternative place of purchase is because, well long story short, my buddy shared a launcher apk with me and the play store got into my phone and froze not only the app, but my whole phone. After reboot all was fine minus the app. I guess it seemed kind of like a search and siezure with out a warrant. I felt a bit slighted and thought I would run an experiment and see if I can produce a comparable experience with all my various types of tech mediums without a single shred of google interface of any kind....I have to admit, it is not easy, they have really intertwined themselves with eanything. No, I'm not paranoid, just trying something new.
BTW, GOOD FN JOB WITH AT!!! Quite an amazing job you have done, any others besides the two? You ought somehow do a game of sorts, like an android app building or developer challenge/puzzle type thing with the purpose of training greenhorns interested in learning and honing veteran skills as well. Sorry for the spam, again thanks, and nice work.
Ps, I did relapse a lil and purchase AT from google...sshhh, don't tell anyone!haha

Is there any good programs to keep apps from starting up?
I use rom toolbox. It's 5 bucks but its well worth it because it includes so much more than killing startup apps.
theres many on the market to choose from, but i believe this should be in the general section as a question.
I use Gemini App Manager - works like a charm, most of the time.. just be careful what you disable, it can cause malfunctions either in that app or elsewhere..

But I'm addressing an app, not a general question.
+1 for Rom Toolbox
Running RebelRom Beta 3
+1 for gemini app manager.
I guess this section should be for sharing apps and themes.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
I've tried a bunch of startup/autorun disabling apps, and Gemini seems to me to work the best. And, that's all I use that program for, configuring autorun.
But like I stated earlier, some apps are more stubborn than others or react differently. For example, if you try to disable any autorun aspect of Text Messaging, like "On Boot Completed", your text messages won't give you a time sent, it just shows you the sending arrow...The Market also had some quirks - it wouldn't finish installing a download with a certain instance of autorun disabled (not the boot completed one though). So, use with caution. And, if there's an issue, it's probably due to the autorun..
And, I thought this section already was intended for discussing apps and themes..
I also use ROM Toolbox. There's just so much more you can do with it. CPU sliders, SD boost, interface tweaks, root file explorer, etc.

I have been using autostarts for years and very happy with it.I use it along with root uninstaller.
thanks everyone for their replies.
I have had my Moto G LTE xt1045 since they first came out and have been very happy with it except for this issue. It is very aggressive about suspending/killing apps. You notice this when you try to switch back and forth between two apps and find that it is restarting the other app instead of resuming it. It's especially noticeable when switching between a browser and another app. Another example is that I was using navigation and tried to use the NPR app to listen to some programs, but it would only do one or the other.
I realize that the phone only has 1 GB of memory, but it seems over-aggressive at freeing memory - doesn't it? I'd like to hear feedback from others about this.
In my searches for further information, it seems that one thing that can be tuned is swappiness. On my stock phone, the swappiness is set to 60. Have people experimented with different values?
My phone is not rooted yet as I've been reasonably happy with the stock experience. But I'm willing to root if it will allow a solution to this problem.
Thanks!

I was facing the same problem, I really hated that it closed the apps so aggressively. This was one of the main reasons I rooted. I don't know about swappiness, but there is a file: sys/module/lowmemorykiller/minfree which handles when the OS will kill different types of apps. If you root and download MinFreeManager you can easily edit this file. If you want more information on this topic, just search for "minfree" here on the forums. After using this app I've been happier with how memory is handled, but of course it is still only 1GB. Also it's worth mentioning that the values in the minfree file are reverted to default on boot. There are workarounds for that, event MinFreeManager has an "Apply on boot" setting, but it doesn't work for me. However it takes like 3 taps to set the values manually.
I hope I could help you.
This sounds like just what I need! What settings have you tried? Have you decided what works best on the moto G?
Thanks!

I confirm it works.
Just flashing the Franco kernel won't fix things?
Also the Android one phones with just 1gb memory performs a lot better at multitasking than G
Somebody with the skills should really look into how google is managing ram in that phone.
Seriously it multitasks like a dream.

No, the kernel is not the issue. It's a config file on the phone that tells android how much memory to keep free - if you follow the link in my previous post, you can read all about it and understand the issue.
It is a phone setting that Motorola changed in 4.4.4. With default settings, you will find that apps are killed by android when you switch to another app and the first app has to be restarted from scratch when you switch back to it. MinFreeManager fixes the issue - but you have to be rooted to use it. Your Android One just has less aggressive default minfree memory settings.

I see. Also one more thing I observed on Android One was that google play services was using 1/4th the ram it uses on my G . there was always 500 mb free ram
