Is there any good programs to keep apps from starting up?
I use rom toolbox. It's 5 bucks but its well worth it because it includes so much more than killing startup apps.
theres many on the market to choose from, but i believe this should be in the general section as a question.
I use Gemini App Manager - works like a charm, most of the time.. just be careful what you disable, it can cause malfunctions either in that app or elsewhere..

But I'm addressing an app, not a general question.
+1 for Rom Toolbox
Running RebelRom Beta 3
+1 for gemini app manager.
I guess this section should be for sharing apps and themes.

I've tried a bunch of startup/autorun disabling apps, and Gemini seems to me to work the best. And, that's all I use that program for, configuring autorun.
But like I stated earlier, some apps are more stubborn than others or react differently. For example, if you try to disable any autorun aspect of Text Messaging, like "On Boot Completed", your text messages won't give you a time sent, it just shows you the sending arrow...The Market also had some quirks - it wouldn't finish installing a download with a certain instance of autorun disabled (not the boot completed one though). So, use with caution. And, if there's an issue, it's probably due to the autorun..
And, I thought this section already was intended for discussing apps and themes..
I also use ROM Toolbox. There's just so much more you can do with it. CPU sliders, SD boost, interface tweaks, root file explorer, etc.

Im not sure if this has been brought up (I did a search and got nothing but rom threads) but I found an app that is an explorer with the ability to browse and change root files.
The app is called super manager. If you have a rooted phone and can't quite afford root explorer this is a decent alternative.
The GUI needs some work but its pretty straight forward.

Good to have another option...will check out Super Manager.
Wow, lots of bad info here already.
Estrong says root only works for 2 specific roms. Is there a reason you are suggesting that in general then? Are their instructions wrong?
I tried super manager last week and it also appears to be a task manager. Even when I tried to turn off those functions, it still ran as a service using up 21mb. No thanks for something I only want to use once in a while.
Well the app is only version 1.9.7 so there is plenty f room for improvement. Im not too happy about the memory consumption but atleast I have an Option, i Can always uninstall and reinstall it on an "As needed basis" that way it don't devour memory

Installing apps to device through market works like a charm, but now the big question, is there any way to uninstall apps a similiar way?

Not at the present time from what it looks like. Google would have to make a script to be sent to your phone to start a removal process of the app you choose to delete. Doesn't seem hard to do, hopefully in the future. That would make it totally awesome! ( not that the Market is not already!) Well within Google's ability.
The app push doesn't seem to work on a Custom ROM. It only has the apps listed that I installed before updating from Stock, it has my last used date as last November, and although it says it is pushing apps to my phone, they never show up.

Something like that is already implemented. As far as I know, Google is able to force a delete of an app from all devices, if it for example contains dangerous code or illegal contend. So the feature is already there, they just need to configure it for personal use.
But I figure, that they have safety-concerns about something like that. (like accidentally deleting an app from a wrong device and loosing all app-data)
Cuz Roms
I'm using Cognition 2.6b (I know I know just tired of flashing right now and its been working perfectly all this time) on a Samsung Captivate.
The market is working perfect for me. Shows all my installs even when they were installed with a custom rom.
Dont forget that your titanium re-installs from different phones wont show up.
I have been around and around the G2x forum trying find a specific thread for app mods for the G2x. I have flashed a couple of times now and feel comfortable dropping zips to my SD card. I have two different areas of potential modding I feel I haven't tapped. First I don't change Roms a lot because of the time it takes to even get the phone aesthetically back to where it was. Second feel like I have modded to the potential of my G2x. Have changed the screen density but don't want to let my paid rooting apps to go to waste because I don't know how to use them correctly.
My paid rooting apps
Titanium backup
Absolute root tools
Any one have any app and or modding tips?
Should this be a stickie?
i've read your post three times now and still can't figure out what you are asking?

Iv'e found that there is the potiential to chage the buid.prop on our phones would be able to view netflix movies. I have Absolute system root tools and have usd that app and others but thats been 3 tweaks using 3 paid apps. Wish I knew more doable tweaks.
If anyone has any other root app tweaks I was hoping people would plop them here. Also is there any way I can flash a rom already themed.

The abilty to customize this phone is almost unlimited. What do you want to do? I am stock rooted. Black taskbar. No problem. Freeze apps, try anttek app manager free. Better battery. Setcpu. Download to the phone, try download all files. Block ads, try adfree. What are you trying to do?
Waiting on gb for netflix and a couple of other things.
I think he's saying that he's wondering if he's missing anything out of the couple of Root-required apps he bought?
Well I barely use Titanium backup. I started using it more because the G2x is a powerhouse and I'm currently playing several games that require me to backup their save files. The paid version lets you backup multiple copies of the same app... which is useless to me. So I use the Free Version. As long as I can do 1 backup before I format, so I can restore afterwards.
Also Root Explorer is a god-send.... although while I did buy that I hardly have the need to download it EVERY time I flash. The built-in file manager from CM7 works well enough to navigate folders. I guess if you are changing your density it kind of requires it though.
The other thing I would download, is ROM Manager. It will check your Rom Version and alert you when there are new updates. It will download them for you, plus whatever else you need, and start the flashing process automatically (once you accept). Handy with CM7 nightlies because you DON'T have to constantly blow everything away... just flash the new nightly over an old one.
Not many apps require root access but these are the 3 main ones.
At the right moment.

Go figure I'm backing up apps for a flash and I am lucky enough to catch the attention of a dev. Thanks every one for their replies. ^ I am asking this question, thank you again for answering. First the part about root explorer/file manager there is no one place to find a number of tweaks so i'm then midnight flashing (pun may be intended ) and by the time apps are downloaded titanium backed up im no longer interested and tweaks out side of screen density and Cm settings. Obviously Rom manager solves my time issues . I wont have to re theme and tweak right just a Rom flash? Can I use the one packed in CM7? Do you have any other root explorer/ root tools tweaks suggestions (part of root question) would love to read?
On your part with out knowing answered a lot of other questions I had.
Okay guys,
I've tried the v6 supercharger and it didn't really help me too much. Even though I believe that modifies these files, I was curious if maybe tweaking them further would do anything.
Just got done reading this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622666
Decided to try messing with these values. The file in question is "lowmemorykiller" located (from the root dir) at sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters. You'll obviously need root and a file manager that has root and editing capabilites.
Opening this file will display 6 numbers seperated by commas. Each one of these refers to a minimum amount of memory assigned to different types of programs, processes etc before the memory manager will automatically close them.
My default numbers were:
7746,9720,11694,13742,15715,24709.
If you read the post in the link above, it will explain what each of these memory limits references. Don't change anything until you've:
A. Backed up your original file!
B. Understand exactly what you're doing (read the link above!).
For those that want to help me with this, try changing all of your values to the ones listed below. When you're done, the file should simply look like this:
2048,4096,5376,9984,11776,13312
Save these and see if it helps at all. I've noticed a bit better multitasking doing this. Most things like the browser or games are still loaded in memory when navigating back to them. I've noticed a few oddities, but overall I think its a slight improvement. Some apps still reload, but dont completely restart (such as the xda app). If nothing else, this is something we can start tweaking to find the perfect values for.
I AM NO DEVELOPER. That being said, I try to help myself and others as best as I can. Hopefully together we can all figure this out
Something to note: like the author stated in the other post, these values will probably be reset to the default values upon a reboot. This could theoretically be fixed by running an init.d script.
Dunno if this is anything or not, but I got tired of reading about the multitasking problems and wanted to at least see if there was anything we could do on our own.
PS this MIGHT be in the wrong subforum. Apologies if so mods!
EDIT: Use the autokiller app in the play store. Should make this 1000 times easier. Thanks for the (obvious) idea Tikerz! I should have known there was an app for this Make sure to check the "run on boot" option under preferences to preserve your changes!
EDIT #2: Found the default minfree numbers for both versions of the one X, as well as the stock ICS numbers:
STOCK ONE X AT&T:
7746, 9720, 11694, 13742, 15715, 24709
STOCK ONE X TEGRA:
8192, 10240, 12288, 14336, 16384, 20480
STOCK ICS 4.0.4 VALUES:
8099, 10132, 12165, 14213, 16245, 20295
These numbers are far too close to be the culprit, but there are at least two other files (that I've found) that control multitasking, as well as certain things at the kernel level. Gonna see what I can dig up...
To make it easier, try AutoKiller from the Play Store. I don't have a One X, but am curious to know if changing the lowmemkiller values would fix the multi-tasking issues on a rooted One X.
1. Those values will make it incredibly easy to run out of memory and you risk having more OS crashes by doing so.
2. V6 supercharger probably needs special mods in order to work right on ICS.
any suggestions as to what some better values would be? Like I said, I'm just experimenting until someone who knows more might chime in. I plan on continuously tweaking these just to see how it affects things
EDIT: Trying the "system default" memory settings inside Autokiller seems to be working pretty well so far. Gonna keep messing with it.

I've got mine set to 8, 16, 21, 39, 46, 52 in AutoKiller. Or 2048,4096,5376, 9984, 11776, 13312 in pages. Multitasking is slightly better, but still far from perfect. I had originally set it to 8, 16, 21, 20,22,24, which yielded a much greater improvement to the multitasking abilities of the phone, however app performance suffered in some games.

Yeah that's what I'm currently running too. Seems to help a bit at least. Looks like it's finding a balance between multitasking and available ram I guess... Thanks for the input.

What was the default HTC setting on the One X?
Well I posted my original numbers in the first post, but those might have been modified from running the v6 supercharger script. If nobody gets back to you ill factory restore and let ya know when I'm home later

I'm about to redo supercharger as well since I loaded 1.82. Fyi, I came across an app called no bloat that'll let you freeze or uninstall system apps and also back them up automatically when you uninstall. Other real nice thing is that it remembers these apps and creates a blacklist of apps so that if you factory reset, it's a one click to uninstall all of them again. I use to use tb for things like freezing and uninstalling but this has been really helpful.

Sent from my Awesome HTC One X using XDA
I dunno if there are any "best" values. Just something to experiment with to see if it helps you. Try downloading the app autokiller from the play store and setting the values to the "system default" setting from within the app. These aren't actually the settings currently on your phone and they seem to help a few people at least a bit. Let us know if it helps you.

Forgive me for asking the obvious, but you've granted the autokiller app superuser privileges? The modified settings stick through a reboot just fine for me...
Maybe try uninstalling and re installing the app? Sorry man, I'm just having trouble reproducing this.

they're fine right now, but i ran the supercharger to set on boot so i'm assuming that changes them every reboot. might just get rid of the supercharger script as i haven't noticed much improvement
ah there ya go. Give that a try. I'll bet that'll be what it was. Let me know if this helps at all. This was just random (wishful) thinking, and mostly just something to mess around with to see. You might benefit from trying different values too

Been offline for the last 24 hours or so then?
I'm fairly certain that is NOT the problem here. There is absolutely no reason the installer should be accessing the internet at all while installing. The actual Substrate itself is included in the APK, and all it's doing when installing is copying it where it needs to be. Pretty certain that process does not require internet access. It's just not compatible with my phone right now.
So is this like Cydia for iOS?

No. On iOS, Cydia is an app store and installer. However, one of the main components of iOS jailbreaks is "Mobile Substrate", and that's what this is. This isn't an alternative app store, it can't install apps. What it does is hooks into Android and allows you to install various "tweaks", basically it can change the way any app or part of the OS works (or looks), without requiring them to be open source, and without requiring you to mod APKs and flash them. Due to the way it works, tweaks should also be more or less "universal", working across different devices, and even different OS versions, without any modification.
For now, the only tweak is WinterBoard, which allows you to apply themes on any ROM (including rooted stock ROMs), as well as apply multiple themes. But there will doubtlessly be plenty more in the near future.
If you've heard of XposedFramework, it's kinda like that (although there are a number of important differences, most of which weigh the balance in Cydia Substrate's favour).
At the moment, it seems to be having some teething issues (e.g. not installing on some devices, breaking some people's cell signal etc.), but I'm sure these will be ironed out before too long. I'd say Cydia will establish itself as the platform of choice for Android mods and tweaks before too long, and people will forget all about the nasty days of APK modding.
Works good on my Xperia s stock leaked jb, it allows themes to work on my stock launcher with the winter board. Loving it
