[Q] HTC One S build quality. Is it worth the risk? - HTC One S

I am looking to get one of these but I am put off a LOT by user feedback on both this and the one X.
I vowed never to buy an HTC again after my Desire developed the random reboot overheat problem to the point where it was unusable. It should not randomly reboot not even once, thats just unacceptable!
Im reading random reboots issues here too, aswell as case damage, manufacturing faults, screen flickering etc.
Are these just rare cases or is it a real risk to get one of these phones?
Also if you root these phones I take it your warrenty is then void no exceptions, you cant even flash back to stock because of the tampered flag?
If so thats just way too risky incase it develops a fault a few months down the line.
The device is beautiful and the perfect phone but it looks like a risk. What do people who actually own the device or are thinking of buying it think?

I have had to relace this phone once. I had unlocked and rooted it. As far as I know the tampered tag only appears as long as HBoot detects SU present. When I sent that phone in I got it replaced without any issues.

As soon as you flash CWM the ***TAMPERED*** flag appears, but that can be removed be running an RUU after you have relocked the bootloader, you will then have stock ROM and ***RELOCKED***
Not sure if it can be removed after the OTA though? Not updated yet

I don't think you should worry too much. No phone is going to be 100% perfect, but with an increased focus in build quality from HTC and software fixes from devs here I'm confident with mine.
I should note that I am exchanging my one this week..the plastic part at the bottom of the phone is slightly "creaky" (doesn't seem move and I'm surprised I even caught it, but I'm veeery picky) so I'm gonna get a new one just in case. Other than that the build and overall quality is amazing. Samsungs plastic phones don't even cone close to HTC.

I had to return one with the exact same problem. Creaking when I pressed the speaker grille on the bottom. Brought it in and the next one they opened had the creak, too. Then he grabbed one from "the bottom of the pile" and it was fine. Also had to exchange my wife's because the sim cover was really loose and the button was kinda mushy. Still, I think I just for a couple with defects. Both replacements are completely without issue.

There's nothing much to say. I have this phone for a month. I have unlocked bootloader, set up recovery and rooted it and I have never seen a random reboot. I only learn that this could happen by reading the posts about it. And for now, the phone looks as beautiful as the day I received it !!

Haven't read too many horror stories. Compared to my previous HTC, MT4G, this thing is a dream. Old phone had creaky buttons, creaky housing, dust under the glass so bad you couldn't see notification in sunlight and just an overall crap design aesthetic. Compared to a plasticky Samsung, choosing this phone was a no brainer.

I've had no problems with this phone except for random reboots. But i believe that is a software issue as it hasn't happened since i flashed CM 9 on it. Build is absolutely amazing. It just feels premium in the hand.

Phone has been perfect and build quality is on par with my N1--

I upgraded from the hd2 that was an awesome phone, iv had the one s for a few weeks now and I have not had a single issue with it. To me the features of the phone overway the few falts it might have. I had to pay full price for the phone and I am vary happy with it. Also from my personal experiance I thing HTC has an awesome customer service and if I do have a problem with the phone in the future I'm confident htc will make it right. I honistly dont see any reason not get this phone.

myTouch 4G paint falling off from the frame

I had the phone for two days and got the phone permrooted and simunlock, I was so pleased with the phone until I see the paint on the metal frame is started to peel off. I have to admit I never had good luck with HTC phones. I've been using htc phones since HTC Magician, from WM5 to Android 2.2, none of them worked right out of the box for me. Previous HTC phones I owned either LCD had lots of stuck pixels, scratches on phone, phone won't boot, or dusts under screen. This time, the paint peels out on the mytouch's metal frame. I guess I will send it back for a warranty replacement... maybe in a month or two. I wonder if HTC is just not good at quality or its me having bad luck with their phones. I'm not angry or pissed at all, I guess I got used to this happening on me with HTC phones now.
If it has an obvious manufactor defect then why not revert to stock and take it back, all states have buyers remorse time. It just sounds dumb to hold on to defective device
Yea I know... but I got the phone from a good friend of mine who works at T-Mobile authorized dealer. He knows all about the history between me and HTC phones and he warned me about it. I insist to get it anyway. So I just don't want to bug him to return another HTC phone for me this time.
Mines not pealing and I even dropped and scratched the chrome trim right by the genius button.

I'm not sure I'm grasping the point of this topic. Was it it simply to say you think HTC makes poor phones? What is the point?

Agreed, this should be deleted.
I have ran HTC done the wing and I ran it over with my Durango. Nothing happened to it. And my mt4g went swimming flash on in the toilet. So don't try to convince me they lack quality.
Just return it.

Like I said earlier, I admit had bad luck with HTC phones, I don't see how difficult is that to understand. If I do think they make poor quality phones, I wouldn't get them in the first place. If you think this thread should be deleted, then we should start with your posts. Don't convince me that HTC phones never had manufacturer defects. If you don't like it then move on.

Mine isn't peeling but I do notice the chrome trim to be very sensitive.
I don't encounter much problem with HTC products...
US SDA (metal frame peeled off)
US MDA
6800 Sprint
TP Sprint
TP2
HD2
nexus one
MT4
Most of them worked right out of box and I don't/didn't have much problem.

My chrome bezel chipped off in one small area too. I don't care; you can barely see it. Which product nowadays is without a flaw? You get what you paid for....

you don't have to return it to t-mobile. you can go to any t-mobile corporate store and they will exchange it for a new one, right out of inventory. you don't even need your receipt.
This may be a dead topic but I personally am ripping apart my phone and custom painted it. Going with some chameleon paint or pearl paint, stuff you use on cars and going to professionally spray it. Tired of black and it's peeled off on the back and bezel, looks ugly.
Why get a new phone when your current phone works fine, just change the rom out or port a rom from a phone that you really want, save up and then get the dream phone. But by then.. a better phone comes out
That's what started happening to my MyTouch4G. I got it from my cousin since he didn't use it anymore, and before you know it, the paint started chipping. I wanted my phone to look nice and not janky, so I just ordered a new body and had my friend it it all back for me and voila! It looks brand spanking new. You can either do what I did or paint over it, or go to t-mobile and they will replace it if you're still under warranty.

Thinking of getting the Sensation.

Was wondering if it was worth upgrading from a g2? What do you guys think about it? Let me have some pros and cons before I dish out my booze money I had saved lol.

sure no problem you will be ok just handle the phone with care the back piece is fragile very, try not to drop the back cover or you will loose your volume rocker or the power button and remember to slide it in and out the back cover head first thats what he meant about build quality i think

THIS IS THE WORST, MOST SHODDILY CONSTRUCTED PHONE THAT COULD EVER EXIST (Not)
The "build quality" of the phone is fine. There are a few problems associated with being early adopters, that a small fraction of people on XDA have. As far as I know, everyone with major issues had them resolved by returning their phone, in store and getting it replaced on the spot.
There are different displays one bye AUO and one made by Sharp, if you're having trouble and prefer either display you can go in-store and exchange it, after telling them the issues you're having with your phone.
Furthermore many of the so called "issues" with build quality are BS manufactured by XDA-ers. Like:
"If I turn of my screen and hold it at a 45 degree angle while shining a flashlight at it I can see a spec of dust under the screen, I'm really really worried ='("
or my personal favorite:
"When I press down on the buttons on the bottom of my screen I hear a slight creaking sound WTF HTC!?!?"
My personal second favorite is THE LAGGY SENSE ISSUE, which essentially goes like this :
"I saw a video on youtube and the HTC EVO 3D runs the HTC Sense homescreen carousel milliseconds faster and smoother than the HTC Sensation, WTF HTC !!! IS THIS WHAT WE'RE PAYING FOR!?!?!?"
- I would like to note that this issue only came into existence after said video made its way to the forums and someone decided that it was an "issue" that a slightly newer phone, with slightly better hardware and a slightly more optimized ROM, ran sense 3.0 slightly better than our phones do at the moment.
- They aren't buttons... this is a touch screen phone and just because they look like buttons doesn't mean that they should be pressed like buttons.
- Wifi-Signal attenuation while holding the phone, in landscape, a particular way IS real, but only if you are far away from your router. ALL phones experience signal attenuation when all or parts of the radios are covered, our phones do not lost Cellular data signal when held in landscape as has been erroneously reported in some places.
Now I will tell you about my experiences with the phone. Both cameras perform poorly in low light conditions and other than that it's a beast of a phone. Absolutely phenomenal.Strangely enough, I don't hear many people talking about this, actual issue where the phone is not performing as one might realistically expect it to perform.
I got my device on launch day and haven't had one "issue" yet. I have seen and others have noted that some dust can get inside of the phone's case, near the headphone jack. I would consider this another NON-issue as it has not been shown to cause any issues. Furthermore dust frequently gets inside of electronics, that's why the good lord above invented compressed air. Some XDA-ers inhale it then try to find issues with their devices, I will use it to clean my phone in a few months, the same way that I do to my desktop PC or the way my little brother does to his gaming consoles.
It's a terrible phone if you only use it at 45 degree angles, in the dark, while shining a flashlight on it, with the display turned off as you press extra hard on the touchscreen (because YOU believe they are buttons to be pressed and not a screen to be touched), using your phone a mile away from your home router, in landscape while completely covering the top of the phone and watching videos of HTC EVO 3D's performing slightly better and getting jealous.
If you use your phone like a normal end-user or even a power user and NOT a beta tester in a laboratory setting then the phone is amazing.
I rest my case.
Thanks for the info guys. Much appreciated.

I am not sure what these guys are referring to as having questionable build quality. If anything that would apply to the G2 and that was my last phone...well, right before the G2x horror.
You should be quite happy with the Sensation, if you have nothing against HTC Sense, as it is a very good device. Very good. I am certain it will be bested in some way by another high end Android phone in a few months, or weeks (there's always something new) but I am flat out thrilled to be using one right now.

Having had HTC HERO and A HTD HD7 I was more of inclined to go for the SENSATION,
But after hovering around both threads decided for the GAlaxy s2 due to better back camera and front camera(2mp) and also for the fact that it came with bootloader unlocked
ANd I guess that was the best decision I made cause of one more reason being....
You can flash the latest firmwares on samsung Devices with ODIN without the NEED TO ROOT which I think is really cool.
I am already on a leaked version of 2.3.4 running beautifully with gtalk video working really great and have not even rooted my phone yet
Just my thoughts.........

Which Sensation to keep?

Here is the dilemma:
I got a Sensation from a retail TMO location about a month ago and have had zero issues with it. It is a Taiwan unit, with a box date of 6/03 and an inside cover date of 5/09 with an AUO screen.
Due to an account upgrade, I just got another Sensation. This one is a China unit and has a box date of 7/12 and an inside cover date of 6/23 also with an AUO screen.
So, should I keep the month old, zero issue Taiwan unit or the new China unit with no track record yet? What would you do and why?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
The new one, just because it's newer and has no wear on it.
Well you didn't really say what you're doing with the one you don't keep. If you're returning it somewhere, you have to return the device they gave you.
If you're selling it, just keep the one you've already been using. If it's already making you happy, no sense in swapping. Besides it's easier to sell a BNIB unit.
If the other is for another line on your account, give them which ever device you think they deserve .
I would go the opposite and keep the older one with no issues. Things like the touchscreen problem or dust under the screen may not show up for a while with a new device.
I would definitely keep the Taiwan unit because I had just gone to T-Mobile to exchange my defective sensation (Chinese unit) and asked them for one that was made in Taiwan. The build quality of my second unit even felt better and I no longer have issues like dust in my screen or loss of touchscreen responsiveness. My cousin had an Tmobile HTC hd2 from china and it was giving him problems also until he went ahead and traded it in for a Taiwan unit. I guess its just better to buy a phone from the same place where the company is located

No, I'm not returning it or using it for another line. I'll probably sell one or the other. The one I've been using is totally perfect (no drops, dings, scratches, etc). From what I have seen, Sensations sell pretty well New or Gently Used, so worst case scenario I might get a few bucks less for the older one.

Soooo true!
I would do the same, at least you're sure your older unit doesn't have touchscreen or dust under screen issues.
Imagine, if within one month, your new one starts getting dust under the screen ^^
Unless the old one already has wear or scratch on it, keep it, if it had to get dust under the screen or other problems, it would have it already, when you can't know for the new one.
Just my opinion
Simple, go for the one that overclocks better. I was in the same dilemna. My old unit went to 1.8ghz no problem but the new unit wouldn't go that far...

Yeah, in kind of leaning toward keeping the older one, it's a known quantity. I guess there is just something about a new toy that makes you stop and say hmmmm. Then again, New = running changes (ex. New one has TMO Highlight pre-installed, not that I care) and the contacts app on the old one is called "Contacts" and on the new one its called "People". This change is in the pre-installed apps, contacts is replaced by people. Oh, and yes the new one is S-on with the same ROM and software versions.

Hmm ok, Need to find a buyer for my htc desire hd now. ;0)
came from the inspire (desire hd). I wouldnt' have switched, if i didn't make a good deal trading the inspire for notphone, then selling that pos to get the sensation. It is a great phone, but not sure if i'd pay $150-200 extra to get it.
Well I came from a HTC HD2 and I have to say i am very pleased with my Sensation. The speed that the device works with is great and i am still totally stock. The HTC Sense 3.0 does not cause problems with major lag like Sense has been know to do. The 4G speeds are awesome, well when I am in a 4G area at least. Matter of fact the speed I get with a 4G signal is better than my home WiFi speeds.
I do recommend you give the, "[LINK TO FIX][UPD 29AUG]Touchscreen Not Responsive" thread a good read, and the, "[FIX] Touchscreen issues (related to screen's grounding)" thread a good read. Both of these threads are on the known touch screen issue of the Sensation that users are having. I myself had the issue, and had it very bad to I must say. But thanks to both of the linked threads I was able to solve my issue and relieve the great frustration it brought me.
All in all though the Sensation has been a great device so far. My wife and I both have one, although she never has experienced the touch screen issue like me. We both enjoy or phones very much. Hope this gives you some insight.
I would personally say don't get one.. its got issues with over heating. the power button wears out rather quickly.. dust under the screen. Signal issues with the cellular and wifi ariels being in the back cover how you hold the device effects strength.
I would suggest going for what ever the upgrade the sensation with (hopefully they will learn by the mistakes)
I woke up to my first phone smelling burnt to never turn on again.. the heat from the cpu damaged one of the dual flex cables that run down from the pcb at the top of the handset to the pcb that holds the cpu and other components.
The replacement phones's power button wore out but didnt have the issue with loads of heat when using a custom undervolted kernel and with scalling enabled.
the replacment came back from repair and this time they didnt even change the power board PCB all they done was change the speaker on it so its on its way back to have the full PCB replaced (and probably with the exact same revision board that will eventually fail again)
I have never had so many issues with one sodding phone... s-off is the only thing that makes this phone any good.. IMHO

[Q]Build Quality[Q]

Just a quick question regarding the HTC Sensation.
Got mine last Saturday, already a happy rooted customer using Android Revoloution HD!
Just got a slight issue with the build quality, I'm not even honest if you would call it that? If I squeeze the bottom left of my device between my fingers with minimum force there is a squeaking of the case and device moving together. I know this isn't such a major problem, but for a phone that i'm going to be having for the next two years it isn't ideal. I regard my Sensation as the 'Lamborghini of Phones' and my comparison is that 'If I had a Lamborghini that squeaked every time I pressed the breaks, I would certainly return it.' So the question is, is this a general fault I will find with ALL Sensations, or am I one of the unlucky few?
Thanks Guys!
Naah, you aren't the only one. I am pretty sure other have it too, and I am one of them.
had the same
i just clicked the backcover off and clicked it back on with a little force and now its gone
Pretty much all Sensations have that squeaking noise due to the nature of the backcasing.

Thanks for the replies, guess it saves me bugging Orange for a new phone. Bad design if you ask me, would have been better if they designed the casing to come off like the Mozart!
