It saddens me greatly that some of the classics are not represented on Android in any way (that I can see). Here are three of my favorites that would work well on a mobile device.
1. Mind Walker. Arguably the first Amiga 1000 game, arguably the first 16-bit game. There are other contenders, but this one has a pretty legit claim. And the gameplay was pretty unique. The randomly generated map is supposed to be a person's mind. Each screen of the map is a 5x5 grid, with each tile supporting a pyramid, a crystal, or one of the four character types. Standing under the pyramid changed your character, and you had to make a path from one crystal to another to get to the next stage, and it just got weirder from there.
2. Zak McKracken. One of the better SCUMM games, but ScummVM for Android doesn't support it. Point and click adventure.
3. Marble Madness. Why hasn't this been done already? The most popular of the bunch here, it was ported on the NES and a couple other systems. The whole thing could be done with a tilt sensor. After the first couple levels, it got hard, quick, but mostly due to the "Simon says" controls, you were never really in control of the ball. It only had 6 levels, I think, maybe 7, possibly 8. Fewer than 10. But it wouldn't be hard to add them, since it was limited by disk space back in the day.
thanks for sharing looking forward to next update

I'd love to see Marble Madness ported to Android as well However, there have been some great Amiga games ported to Android already..dunno if you're aware of it?

Why not just download the amiga emulator free on google play store and then download the roms of the games you like? Emulator is called 'UAE4Droid'.
Didn't know it existed, thanks. Looks like it's still in development. It basically works but doesn't run anything. Mouse input is completely off, just broken all over. Emulating a computer on a phone is a fundamentally bad idea, though. The games would have to be individually reimagined as touch screen games.

When I try to play a Polar Bit game like Wave Blazer or Asphalt HD, etc., the controls are completely out of control. Other games like NFS Shift, and the Gangster games from Gameloft, appear as if they will load, then half the screen has ghost like cars and people.
Is this something that will clear up with Gingerbread or will we likely have to wait for Honeycomb (which I have read has been written for the Motorola tab with almost identical hardware to our G pads) ?
Has anyone found any games besides Angry Birds that res up properly to a 10 inch screen ?
Thanks in advance.
I could actually be the game, or a firmware issue or both. Some games work fine, some do not probably as they coded for a smaller phone screen that's in portrait mode by default.
I wouldn't recommend this tablet for gaming, yet. Too many issues that may not be worked out until the app makers start developing for tablets. You could also call CS to complain, so that way they know it's an issue (I've done this a few times, myself).

Not sure I agree that the G is not good for gaming. Angry Birds, Mini Squadron, Steambirds, Quake series, PSX and the down the road releases of Dreamcast and N64 emus have no equal with Tegra 2.
If solely for Android games and especially Gameloft games, 100% agree.
I used to think the sensor was screwed up in the tablet. More I play with things the more I believe it is the way the games were coded. They were not made to work on a tablet in landscape mode. Some developers did a better job then others and may have thought ahead.
Raging Thunder is a good example. Raging Thunder 1 has to be driven with the tablet sideways. Raging Thunder 2 works fine. Seems to me something may have been learned about how things should be coded between game 1, and game 2.
If the G sensor was bad no game would ever work. Since there are games that do work I tend to lean towards the game being broken, and not the sensor in the tablet.

I can't wait til the N64 and dreamcast emus.
Labyrinth works perfect so I'm convinced its the games themselves
I wouldn't recommend it for gamers yet because some games don't work. But agree that, when they do work, they work very well. Angry Birds, for example, is a game I almost wish didn't work.
But since it's hit or miss, it's not something I would recommend to a gamer. I figure that this will work itself out as more Tegra 2 devices are released.
I just figured that some of the games i saw working on the galaxy tab in the vzw should be working on this tablet as well but there were some issues with them not working. anyway i hope can create a database of games that work well somwhere on the forums and sticky it

Is anyone here a fan of the Animal Crossing series from Nintendo? I definitely am and I started trying to figure out if there was a way to play one of these games on my Xperia Play. After doing a little research, I discovered that the original Animal Crossing started off as Animal Forest, a Nintendo 64 game released only in Japan in 2001. In 2002 it got ported to the Gamecube and released for all regions. I have a rom of the Nintendo 64 version that had been patched for English and actually got it to load in N64oid! Unfortunately, it crashed when K.K. told me to set the game clock. Bummer! I wonder if there are any patched versions floating around that can get past this first road block, or if there is some way to set the clock in N64oid that I can't seem to find.
Is anyone else interested in playing Animal Forest/Crossing on their phone?
Don't speak of roms. You will be killed.
Yeah I defiantly would! Loved that game!
N64oid is on the SlideMe market now for android, and is being updated soon with very high compatibility.
Lets hope that includes Animal Forest. I tried running Animal Crossing on the DS emulator earlier but it was so slow that it was unplayable. It would be nice if Nintendo and other developers would recognize the potential of the Play and create their own android stores where they could release some of their older titles that could easily be optimized for the Play. I would gladly pay $10 for a perfect port of Animal Crossing.

No, not really. What I'm saying is that developers are missing a major opportunity by not releasing android-friendly ports of successful games they've created in the past. The nostalgia factor alone would drive the majority of sales.
The idea that Nintendo would voluntarily share revenue from any of their ip's with anyone is, well... Let's just say it will be a cold day in Hell.

Sounds to me like the emulator doesn't support the real time clock, necessary to emulate animal crossing...
Here is more info the real time clock, sounds like Animal Forest is the only game on the N64 to use the clock...

I wonder if this RTC patch only pertains to specific emulators. Worst case scenario, I think I could live with setting the clock whenever I played.

the device is a few months old mate, just wait and the big names will come, you will never get nintendo games on the play but rumor is that sega plans to bring alot of retro games to android, word is, it was sega that got all the emulators taken off the market
Sega is not unfriendly towards emulation. They hired Steve Snake, one of the guys behind one of the most popular Genesis emulators for PC, to emulate some of their classics for PC release in the past. Doesn't mean they weren't the reason the emulators got taken down, but just something I wanted to point out.

I used the japanese version of rom and got past the initial train ride but then crashed at entering village. N64oid should be getting that engine update anytime now. This is also my# 1 game for n64oid. Just a note, you can swap gamesaves between english version and japanes by changing gamesave file the same as the rom of language choice.

anyone tried this on v2.0 of N64oid?
I've done the same. N64 looked playable but when I got to that dog it asked me to set the time. So I pushed x or o something a bunch of times.. and it worked. But when I got on the train the game looked terrible and it wasn't showing text input/responses and the textures were spazing out and changing colors. I'm sticking to harvest moon on my snes emulator.

Anyone know any good final fantasy type RPGs that work on honeycomb? There is one called Spectral Souls I found in the market but it looks to be in japanese. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have spectral souls, and it's not in japanese:

Also- Check out BattleHeart. It's much less involved than Final Fantasy, and not turn-based, but it's ton's of fun:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.KelliNoda.Battleheart
I suggest you use various emulators for android to play RPG's such as final fantasy. Also as said before battleheart is a decent one, although imo its not really Final Fantasy like.
Like you I've been keeping my eye out for some good RPG's for Honeycomb and haven't found much yet.
Emulators and some of the older ones are awesome but the emulators don't make use of a touch screen (apart from a emulated d-pad) and its the same problem with Spectal souls... I mean they go so far to get a huge tablet RPG but then don't make it fully touch?! You use emulated buttons to navigate around (apart from turning the camera! WOO!)
Battlehearts is pretty cool but a bit simple - awww can't win with me it seems
Would like souls to make use of a full touch screen (i will buy it then) or waiting for something new to come around.

I've been scouring looking for a nice android rpg but find myself in the same situation.
I'll be experimenting with the ps3 controller hooked up to the dock soon and will likely play psone rpgs that I never got around to playing years ago.
I got about 10 hours of enjoyment from battleheart, it was fun.
There's actually not many games at all optimized for honeycomb, but hopefully soon.
Been itching to try Souls but haven't succumbed to the temptation to drop the money for it.

if i could get uae4droid to work on the asus i'd be playing some of the KRYNN series from SSI (champions of krynn, etc.). Apparently it's a deep dark secret how to actually get the kickstart to work with the emulator.
Have we heard anything regarding GTA III getting full Xperia Play optimization? I mean, we have two joysticks right there and the game doesn't use them, when the original game used dual joysticks.
Any word?
definetly +1
Oh it uses them alright, just poorly.
I'd LOVE to see them use it right though. Moving with dpad instead of analog, and having to center the camera instead of just aiming correctly is lame as hell.

I've a stock rom OC'd to 1.6 and it still lags, very little installed on the phone too...dunno why
I suggest you contact Rockstar Support here and complain (nicely!). I opened a support ticket with them and explained to them that I purchased the game b/c I saw that the phone was "supported" and I interpreted that to mean that there is full support for the Play's PS controller. I also suggested that they let me map the buttons as I see fit, like the PC versions. I also suggested that they could let us use the volume up/down buttons as the second set of L triggers or onscreen softkeys for the second set, and we could replicate the PS2 controls perfectly.
I got them to admit after a couple of replies back and forth with them that the game does not fully support the Play's controller. It's not public, but my support request # is 157050, you may want to mention it in your ticket, in order to show them that people other than me are interested in this. In the end they said they forwarded my request to the development team. I doubt they'll actually fix it unless more people complain.
Not to change subject at all, but Are you guys even actually able to use these damn touch-pad-thinggies?lol. I have tried in Shadowgun, GTA III, & Modern Combat 2, & some others games but its hard for me! Especially the games that have shooting. Maybe its only me ,but I feel the touchpads are the weakest part of the controllers design. I think they are a good start for 1st PS phone ,but I hope they are replaced by something else in the next model.

The problem is that devs are just mapping analog thumbstick style controls to them, which DOES NOT WORK without being able to start moving from a true center position. Dead Space does it right with aiming controls that work more like a touch screen. It doesn't start spinning left just because you touched it slightly to the left of center; instead, it considers your initial point of contact to be the virtual center. Then, it moves proportionally at the speed you move and stops when you stop, like a mouse or touchpad on a laptop. Unlike the poor controls in so many other apps, it doesn't continue moving in a direction until you "let go" or the virtual stick. It just works. Try Shadowgun on a tablet and you'll see that the touch screen controls work almost exactly like that, but even they did the stupid "map like an analog stick" method on their Xperia PLAY "optimization."
I agree: Battlefield Bad Company 2 is MADDENINGLY BAD!
Try now, it just got updated with much better controls!
Still no touch pads, but at least the rest of the buttons are more in line now.

Mame/Neo/Cps Emulators are great but where is the challange. I like and brought these official ports (metal slug too) for 2 reasons. 1) Bluetooth multiplayer 2) a limit on credits. Where is the challange if you can keep shoving fake credits in, it makes these games too easy because you have no real death. Its like cheating and there is no point in that when you are only cheating yourself out of a good game. With metal slug on Emulator i completed in a hour (fun over). On the official port not even half way in and been playing hours worth. At least with emulators like Snes and PSX you have limits as its built in to the game (Saves states are also bad but still mean you have to get past the place your stuck on dying). I am happy to recommend these ports over the emulated way
Original MVS cartridge are 'free play' at will anyway, but you are right about arcade, nothing can beat the 1coin challenge and bt coop option is the best.
My previous bought of metal slug for android was a disapointment, few option, gallery mode, slowness this one seems better optimized. I think save state is a bless to train yourself in the hardest level without crawling again the whole intro + much more freedom to simply save your progress.
My fingers thank autofire as well. I found vsFighters a bit more difficult compare to the arcade because of the controller, xplay paddle is tiny and snk special moves can be tricky.
