So I have noticed that the jpegs coming out of the camera set at full resolution (8mp) are only 1.5MB - this seems very small compared to what it should be. My wife has the Infuse and her 8mp shots are closer to 3 - 5MB.
I understand the need to save space, but it seems to me they are compressing quite a bit. We should have the option of saving full uncompressed jpegs if we want. I wonder what effect this is having on the overall quality of the pictures...
There was a member over on the international One X forum that tweaked the app to do zero compression but it was buggy. Interested in seeing the results for that.

Since most D2 users feel the picture quality is only so so , has anyone found a way / .cab to allow the camera to store the picture in RAW format which enables postprocessing with sw like photoshop? Otherwise any tweaks / .cabs to patch the default JPEG & better noise reduction?
I'd go for that too ... although maybe there's only so much you can do with a 5 meg camera ?

That got me thinking, my full-sized camera is only 5 megs (a Nikon and had it a while) but takes absolutely stunning pictures.
It isn't the number of pixels reducing the quality, it is the quality of the optics. You can't expect much out of a lens the size of the one included in Topaz.
I don't think having a RAW output would help matters any.

Phil
Actually, sensor quality is the biggest issue here. Phone camera sensors are tiny and thus don't have the same image fidelity of sensors in dedicated cams. Sure, they're pulling 5MPs out like a point and shoot, but there's a lot less light sensitivity in them. Take the same shot with a cell phone and with a DSLR into an app like Adobe Lightroom and increse the brightness (not exposure). On the DSLR shot, you'd instantly see the extra detail come out of the shadows. On the cell phone shot, you'd see mostly noise and detail masked with noise.
On sensors this size, i doubt the lens would make much difference. The difference between plastic and glass (i believe) is mostly academic. About the best you could hope for is reduced chromatic abherration and flaring, but no manufacturer is going to waste the kind of money necessary to put pro-level or even prosumer glass on a phone, particularly one with a standard-sized sensor.
Also, try the demo version of Neat Image:
http://www.neatimage.com/download.html
It'll batch process up to two images. It's not a deep as the pro version, but it gets the job done.
I seem to be alone in liking the photo quality on the TD2! You need good lighting, and if you stick to ISO100 (200 at a pinch) and reduce "brightness" by "1", the results are better than a lot of compact cameras I've used. The colours in particular are excellent, and bar the occasional strange HTC processing artifact, the detail level is very good, both in the centre and into the corners. For it's minute size, the lens actually impresses me. Where the lens falls down is shooting into the sun, a stiff test for most compacts, but you could still shade it with your hand.
I think HTC's software image processing (noise reduction etc) is actually good, they don't mess with the image as much as some mainstream camera manufacturers. You get more noise, but you get more detail left too, which I prefer. I've printed some of the pics from the TD2 onto A4, and they look superb, you couldn't tell them apart from a normal compact camera.
The only issue I have is at higher ISOs (400+). I don't find the noise a problem but I get horizontal interference lines as well which are intrusive.
I suppose there might be a lot of sample variance in such a "cheap" camera though, so just because I was lucky with mine doesn't mean everyone will have got a good one.

Indeed these horizontal interference lines is what ticks me.
I'll try your settings and see if the image quality improves.
... and unfortunately I don't think you can get rid of the interference, RAW or not. It's probably getting in via the power supply to the camera, or maybe being picked up directly, from the main processor or one of the radios. Turning the phone radio off whilst taking high ISO pics might help, I haven't tried it yet. It's the price for so much digital in such a small space. At least low ISO pics aren't affected.
I'm also really interested in raw capturing. Think on some pics we will be able to have higher quality...
Guys still can't leave this idea! I really impressed by diamond2 camera. And i think that even if we would be able to capture uncompressed data from camera, png formant for example, it would be super and would give us some space for enhancements...
for WM there are so much software, and now alternative camera soft?
Or maybe video for 30fps?
Since most D2 users feel the picture quality is only so so
Well i know that some phones have its camera function as "main argument" but other functions usually suffer there. Here we have complex device, and its camera from my point of view make decent picture.

Just made +1 on contrast to have wider dynamic range, and +1 on sharpness cause internal sharp algorithm is crap, if i need i'll boost contrast and sharp in lightroom. And i have very good pictures, this phone easily replace my compact camera.
I took several indoor and outdoor pictures yesterday, and the setting was on 5mp. The results were very disappointing. I looked at the files, and it was obvious why. They were 1mb or less. I did not find any other setting (like"fine") as on other devices (N1)?
Pictures on my N1, which has a lower mp rating, are much better. I smell a rat here.
I also took some 720p videos. A 5 minute file is 275 mb, which seems a bit lite. I will see how it looks on HD TV. Similar files from still camera with 720p HD mode look pretty good.

They don't look bad on the MT4G screen, but on computer - (especially if you zoom even a little) - not as good as N1...
Update - I checked settings and the the camera was set to wide, so it apparently just crops the pictures to fit, so what you get is about 3.3 mp. Change to to 4:3, and the resolution goes up to 5mp.
I will take a few pictures set this way and see how they compare.
How about we start posting pics in this thread to see what everyone is talking about.
Seeing is believing!
Here is a pic I took yesterday while watching bad boys 2.
*Edit* this pic is 2592 x 1456 which = 3.8 mp and it's set to widescreen, setting it to 4:3 standard gives you 2592 x 1952 which = 5.1 mp
That looks pretty good! No? Or can it be better?

i dont think its bad at all

I don't know... I would easily trade ease of use (nice functions, dedicated shutter button, face recognition, LED flash) over many of the cameras, which may take slightly better photos.

I watched that video last night and I agree that the video and picture capability of the MT4G is great!
I think people just have to "try" to find something to complain about.
I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!

now i believe u lose some quality when u have widescreen mode on. uncheck it take a picture and compare the 2 pictures.

There wouldn't be any difference in quality. Widescreen is simply a normal 4:3 that is digitally cropped on the top and bottom. Therefore, of course there are few pixels (lower resolution).

Has anyone connected their phone to an HDTv yet, to see what video quality/pictures look like?

yeah but some people complained about the hd2 when it would tale widescreen mode pics that it isnt true 5mp it was 4mp and if u took off widescreen mode then it was true 5mp. so thats what i am going based off of. but i still think the pictures i take in widescreen mode on the mt4g are great in widescreen mode. i have no complaints
Is there any way to boost the frames per second for the video? I've been comparing photo and video quality pretty heavily with an iPhone 4, and overall the MT4G would be "better" IF the autofocus lag was fixed, and the fps for video was 30 fps.
I find the colors and auto-levels to be superior on the MT4G, but the fps thing is really annoying.
Looks like this camera has the same problem the G2 camera has.
Download the trial of Camera 360 and set the JPEG compression to a more reasonable level. The default camera app on the G2 compresses the everloving CRAP out of the pics and makes them look TERRIBLE.
I've taken some pics with the G2 camera via Camera360 that were remarkably improved over the stock Camera app.
The pictures at 4:3 were better, but the camera 360 pictures and features are better still. Can it be set up to open with the camera button?
Update - it must be the compression in the OEM camera app - would be nice if it could be turned off. The uncompressed Camera 360 shots are twice the size at the same resolution settings. When you look at them on computer screen and zoom in - big difference!
yo.

it's very interesting. The Desire S seems to have a lot better image quality than the IS, which really looks crappy IMO.
cheers

From the Desire S <-> Incredible S comparison, the detail and contrast seem much better on the DS. Color balance is much better too.
I had seen comparisons with the Arc (which has a very good camera) and got the impression that the camera was a weak point on HTCs; I had resigned myself to having a below-average phone camera in exchange for more memory/storage and a nicer UI than the SE phone.
But having taken a few pictures and a little bit of video with the DS, I'm fairly pleased with the results. I may post samples here later, if I can be bothered.
I've not gone to the trouble of pixel-peeping, and most of the photos I've taken have been outdoors in good light, but the camera on the DS seems okay.
Camera of the Desire S is awful. Terribly high compressed JPGs. Yes, the pics from Incredible S can only be even worse since this camera has 8 MPixel which must be even more terrible for an image sensor of this size. In most situations it will only capture noise.
But the interesting thing is, that the Desire S is even much worse than the Diamond II (my previous phone). It's the same 5Mpixel sensor. But the Camera application on the Diamond II had an option for 3 different Jpeg compression levels. I always had SuperFine enabled, which ended up id quite reasonable results. The cam app on the Desire S has no option for different compression levels. It produces 5 MPixel images with the size of 800 kByte. This can not be usefull.
I also tried an alternative camera app (Vignette). Images are far less compressed (about 3 MByte per image) but not a good quality.
Again, I know that optics of this size can not resolve 5 MPixel. But the quality of Diamond II images has been better (also 5 MPixel).
800 kb of a 5mpx photo xDD ?? thats a joke. my old w880 has a 2 pmx sensor with no AF (its pretty awful..) and IT makes 800 kb photos lol

OK, 800kB was a bit overdrawn. But 1,3MB is a typical size of a 5MPix image on the Desire S.
I have noticed that since the ics update that my pictures seem to be smaller file sizes?
Image quality dont seem much different but its producing pictures around 70% of the size?
Without HDR or any multiframe nonsense. Just the main camera, base ISO. I have seen good photos from the S21, but so far the ones from the S22 don't look that good.
Kind of worried my old P30 Pro produces more detail at a higher resoultion. Maybe I should sit this one out.
It seems that the slow Expert Raw app produces DNG files with artifacts due to over sharpening. While the normal camera app produces clean but slightly softer dngs.
No phone is perfect at launch. I remember the S21 Ultra launch, I got the phone since day one and in less than 3 weeks Samsung pushed about 5 updates/patches that included, among other stuff, camera enhancements. Can't judge the S22 Ultra just yet
How is that relevant if a so called "expert" app creates over-sharpened raw files that need to be reduced in size to hide the artifacts while the normal app produces pure raws and is even faster in doing so.
I doubt the s21 raw output changed with updates.
That's not update/patch territory, that's bad decisions in creating the so called expert app. On par with misleading customers with digital zoom and interpolated megapixel specs.
