Hi
Are there a list of things that a first time smartphone user should know. i am asking this cause i have never used a smartphone ever in my life. in fact i have never spent more than 50 dollars on a phone.
so please if you could please give me a headstart on what a smartphone noob should know
Well, first thing is what device now graces your eyes and hands? Second thing would be to read a little bit about your device.
Not saying that you will want to jump straight in and ROOT your phone but there is tons of information that might help you like what case or maybe different apps that help with battery life.

Do your research on each phone your looking into. Get to know your phone before trying to do any ROM/Kernel changes. Also be sure to research and do your homework before attempting any changes at risk of damaging the phone.
Be sure to know what you want in a smart phone as they can be very expensive, play with one at local best buy / see videos / reviews before you purchase. Depending on your carrier know if your looking for a 4G phone that you know it is a 4G phone. Research the specs, hardware, software. There isn't much flagship advice one can give you about using your phone that you cannot find out by just playing with the phone and seeing whether you enjoy it. Just know there is tons to do and with time you will easily learn the OS/Phone you enjoy.
Best advice is: Research and know what device you want before getting it, save money if you don't like it & play with one to learn / see if you enjoy that OS or phone.
I am using the HTC one x
Your best bet would be to do your research. Read, read and read some more. Learn what your device can and can not do. Most things you will not have to worry about depending on your needs.
One word you have one x..so good screen best for.HD porno

Most people use smartphones as a portable entertainment platform.... so learn how to download music, videos and games to your device and enjoy it
Learn power management , these phones can use a lot of power if you do not control it, when i got my first smart phone the battery would die in 8 or so hours, now i can get a day an half out of it maybe two without recharging it...
Example set your screen brightness down to50 % or less, email retreival to once a day and then check it manually. put a data off short cut on your main screen , turn it on/off as needed...

You are using a Smartphone for the first time and you had never used phone above $50. So I will not make you confuse by giving a list of Smartphones. I have choosen a Samartphone with every great feature and choosen as seeing you as a first time Smartphone user. Today most popular Smartphones are Android devices so you should by an Android Smartphone and you will have to spend at least $300. You need a phone with good camera, good music Input and Output quality and a touchscreen with a good touch response. So my suggestion is you can buy HTC Wildfire S its cost is about $300 maybe below $300. It has a 5 Megapixel camera with LED Flash, 3.2 Inch Capacitive touchscreen,3G, WiFi, GPS, HTC Sesnse User Interface 2.1, 512 MB ROM, 512 MB RAM, Android 2.3 and it has every feature that you think about a good Smartphone.
HTC one X is a brilliant phone. Read this

That should be a good start.

I am in the process of buying an Android phone. Samsung Captivate or HTC Desire Z. Any suggestions? I am new to Android and I am new xda.
I feel like I'm trapped in a time warp here that I just can't escape.
First, welcome to XDA.
Second, you obviously have access to the internet or you wouldn't be on here.
With that said, GOOGLE and YOUTUBE could provide you with more information that you can handle on these two phones. Google can give you specs, reviews, pictures and other things like prices and best places to buy. Youtube can provide you all of that same information is some cases along with a video review and actually being able to see the phones in action. Of course you can then compare the two phones based on the videos, specs and reviews and make a pretty good decision on which one is right for YOU.
I'm not really sure what else to say here dude. I mean, I could give you my opinion but at the end of the day what I have to say about the phones doesn't matter. YOU are going to be using the phone, not me. You know what you will use it for, where you will use it and what you want on it. Just research both phones (I dont mean ask people questions about it, get FACTS about the phones), opinions do not really matter most of the time when it comes to a PERSONAL device.
Or you can do like 80% of the people do these days and buy something just because "everyone else is doing it".

yeah , sorry for my bad english too , i don't understand your 3rd question
1. i didn't paly Dead Space , so i don't know , but i do have some 3D games which is running fine.
2. i think so , for year 2012 you can count on it , at least there will be some final stable ROM and Kernel left. , anyway , phones are upgrading very fast ...
3. don't understand it...
the nexus s is a good buy, especially with some carriers offering it for free, so if you are getting it subsidized it's likely the best deal for the dollar. It still has at least another good year of developer support for it as well, maybe a little longer. However if you are buying unsubsidized I'd look at the galaxy nexus or even the galaxy note instead.
The nexus is still a solid phone to have, I wouldn't use my upgrade on it, though, of course
I recently purchased my i9023 in December 2011. I had a HTC Desire, this is a good phone but only has 384MB of RAM for the OS, cache and Apps.
The Nexus S's CPU isn't much faster but it has 512MB for the OS, 512MB for cache, 1MB for Apps, and 14MB of 'sdcard' storage onboard. This will enable the Nexus S to run future upgrades for quite a long time as devs will keep supporting it!
Also even a rooted pure google phone will always get official updates since devs will jump on it!
Okay a friend of mine asked me to give her a device about what smartphone to buy. She is a girl she wont root, she is not into computers, she just want a good phone. So I've decided not to advice with some android phone because this is not for her needs. What she need is the simplest and best running phone. I've immediately told her to get an iphone 4. But I've wondered about Windows Phone 7. WP7 UI is just really beautiful and I like it a lot. But I've never spent time reading and researching about WP7 because it is locked like iOS and this is not what I am looking for and my android phone suits me perfectly. But it is a good alternative to iOS i think. It is easy to work with and is very beautiful. So would you give me some hints about WP7.
What would you recommend me WP7 or iOS? The biggest factor is stability, she will get used to both of operating systems but which is most stable. Of course ease of work is a bonus too. Tell me about other cons and pros. If you think WP7 is good. Please recommend a phone. The phone can be any price range. What we look for is not so much performance CPU and etc. she is a girl she won't play games. We look for good design and most important good quality build. Like I am very happy with my Sensation but I have this feeling of the bad quality build (dead grip, power button issue and more) so I am searching for the phone that is most near to perfect (there isn't a perfect phone) So I am waiting for your suggestions thank you!
Iphone, its a girl.

Why don't you just go to a mobile phone shop and try some out with her? Surely that's the best way, if she's only purely bothered about the phone.
well, keeping both the iOS at stock that is no system related mods both are quite stable. So you should just let her see both and then decide perhaps.
Of course she will decide which phone to take. But I want to ask you about quality. That's why I mentioned my Sensation great phone, great design but poor quality in some aspects and you can't predict this unless someone tells you from experience. And I've never worked with WP7 so I am asking you to give me an opinion is it good enough as the iOS. Is it good for noob users I know iOS is best for noob user but WP design is great and gives us more range of phones but I don't know if buying a WP7 phone is a good decision never met this OS.
If she plays games, iOS. If she does social networking, texting, music, chatting, pretty much anything else, go wp7
Please propose me a high quality WP7 device with screen no bigger than 3.7 inches other factors does not matter of course the better specs are preferred.
Take her to the store, let her experience both and she will decide.
Let her decide ^^

While the iPhone does work fine for many, she may like a Windows Phone for the fact that it is dang good for social networking, stability, and overall it has grown a lot in a short amount of time. I love my Arrive and my mom who could bairly opperate a flip phone, now uses a Trophy to good levels.
This gal may also dig some of the new Nokia phones and their various color options.
Thanks to all. Of course she will decide but I will propose her WP7 it will suit her best if she like it. But please propose me a high quality WP7 phone.

I'd go with the Samsung Omnia 7 (or it's newest equivalent).
The Samsung phones have awesome AMOLED screens that are the only thing outside of an iPhone that look AWESOME.
It's also a VERY good looking device, and because it's Samsung you can expect the very best voice quality on the market.
The nokia looks very good and their phones are high quality but are they good enough with the smartphones they are pretty new in this thing?
my advice is i phone
definitely iphone.... that's a very easy to use phone
Any price constraints? Iphone is more sexy, but IMHO Windows Phone has the most intuitively correct and awesome UI.
Go with iPhone.

iPhone. Hi tech for people bad at technology.
I'm trying to get a windows phone and I was wondering if it was good
Welcome! Everyone has different preferences, so what one person may like/dislike may be different for you. I suggest you make a trip to a store which has some windows phones on display for you to play around with. Also, read some reviews on a few of the phones you are interested in. That may help in making your decision on a phone. Best of luck in your search!
its not bad but as the others said it boils down to personal preference, go to the store and try different os..
cheers
Windows Phones are great for the average user. But for people that pay attention to the market, id recommend waiting for Windows Phone 8 since current users wont be upgraded and will be basically crippled from further development and platform growth

I have to say a pure phone windows phones are pretty good. Stable, easy/fast to use and do what you need but as a user said already they are dumbed down and you don't have much for freedom to customize....
To nutshell it if you want games/apps/freedom don't get a windows phone. If you want a phone that just works as a phone/social networking device have at it.
I have a wp7.5 phone and its strictly a backup handset I just can't justify losing all the freedoms and features of android.
P.s. Windows phone GPS apps suck pretty bad compared to Google maps.
Pin it to Win it.
I agree with the above two. A personal preference for sure. Is it good, yes, it makes and receives calls and a good Social Media device. Depending what your specific needs are, you have the big 3 (iOS, Android and Windows Phone) to choose from. Play with them, check out the phones in person, verify they have the apps you want to use. etc..they all work well, just choose the one that fits your needs and that is all that matters!
Great for average users and very user friendly, but nothing much man can do with it.
if you only want call, sms, surfing.. its quite good. But im an android flashaholic
Lol, no.

Everybody should wait for Nokia WP8 pureview phones, they will make other phones embarassing.
Maybe WP8 may bring you a lot of surprise:silly:
If you wanna get one, just go symbian for better battery life lol

I think of windows phones as a middle between Android and iOS. Not too difficult to use but also not tooooo user-friendly that it seems dumbed down.

Exactly! Not too complicated with all of the ROMs and rooting that happens with Android, and not as dumb as iOS, with those little squares on the screen that just stare at you with their dumb app logos.
Windows Phones are cool, depending on what type of user you are.
I had a hard time with the when i had my HD7, but alot has changed since then. Way more feature and apps.
Best bet for you will be to wait for the Windows Phone 8 devices, they will be great and will have SD card slot.
Good Luck:good:

In my honest opinion, Windows Phones are extremely dull. (Well at least WP7.5)
Pros:
Unbelievably fluid
Xbox Live, kinda
Bloatware can be deleted without hacking
Great keyboard. And I mean great, after using it I tried to find a port of it for Android
Cons:
Apps in the Marketplace are waaaay overpriced
There are barely any apps, let alone good apps
Barely customizable home screen, which may appeal to others
The UI is strange, with all the slide swipes and tiles, which once again may appeal
I really missed the menu button from Android, and the search key only takes you to Bing, so unlike Android won't vary from app to app
Auto rotation support was inconsistent
Notifications we pretty crappy
That was my experience with WP7 but with WP8 a lot may change, I really do not know because I don't follow Windows Phone news.

Hello everybody. This is my very first post and I've been on xda for something like 30 min. Therefore if the post is inappropriate delete or move it. Thanx.
Now why ask here? Well, I'm sort of developer and sys admin and I've learnt that best answers come from tech people, so here I am!
As first let start with a broad question.
I'm coming from a moto g first gen. My phone expected life is 2 years according to previous phones I've owned.
What am I searching? Well I'm focusing on a bit of security in software. For those who know linux I'm the kind of guy who uses centos on servers, ubuntu LTS or debian stable on vms or desktop, I'm not in search for the latest and greatest but proper patch level adherence in android.
I don't really bother about void warranty. Lets face it: in my country (italy) consumers devices have no SLA nor you can expect anything from repair shops, so in case of damage I still need to buy a second phone for temporary patch.
I'm asking you: what alternatives are here to nexus? I've red that sony seems good at following patch levels. Cyanogen (in case I'll buy and root a phone) seems to release stables now and then without strict montly patches. What about other roms?
In the end which are the alternatives to nexus (both stock or aftermarket) for a proper security patch coverage? I'm I "cursed" to buy a nexus or may I pick from supported devices of any of existent roms?
to narrow specs: I'm searching for something in the range € 200-250, between 4.7'' and 5.2'', 16-32 GB disk, 2+ GB ram, decent camera, wifi N (2.4 is ok, never used 5 ghz), basically don't care so much about other specs, just get good battery runtime.
Thank you,
M
PS: Potential buy is Nexus 5X (supported by google for next 2 years, and available around € 230 on some italian on line shops) but battery runtimes are not so good
Welcome to XDA!
Gee, I didn't realize it, but there are (at least) two of these well established topics (and stickied) going on now:
One is right above yours, for general discussion
The other is in the Q&A sister subforum, more tailored for asks
Since your thread is geared more for asking which to buy, I would go for the latter.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
To help promote the use of the above threads, I will be closing this one now.
