HTC CEO and president Peter Chou promised that all HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 can have their bootloaders unlocked.
Currently this is not the case with the AT&T One X variant.
The only thing they respond to is bad PR and social media harassment. We're passionate about our phones and they should know it.

This takes only 5 minutes to complete and actually makes a difference.
Having wide exposure of this issue gets the attention of AT&T very quickly.

Every little bit helps. The more active we are the faster this will be resolved. I'll be *****ing night and day until it's unlocked.

Sorry guys.
Ordered my Galaxy Nexus today.
I'm willing to downgrade my hardware to support open source, unlocked bootloader, and development. I feel that by not returning this phone - I am playing a part in supporting locked bootloaders.
I will continue to support this movement, update this thread, pester AT&T, and will probably be back should the bootloader be unlocked when my girlfriend needs a phone.

Commented on their FB page. After hearing what AT&T's CEO said today about unlimited plans and iMessage, I really can't stand AT&T now.
Lets get this done people!!!!!! I hope this flippin works!!!!!!!
Been commenting under "Robert Dole" on the facebook page since last night on everything.
I also have brought this to the attention of two editors (Myriam, Terrence) on Engadget directly via comments and podcasts chats on thier site. I also 'tipped' Engadget about it as well. Hopefully they will run a story on it.
EDIT: The more people that help, even just something as a simple post on att's FB page the better. Strength in numbers! Get everyone involved even if they don't have a One X!

Not true. This article doesn't prove anything. Nothing changed. AT&T is blocking the unlock. At least until they cave in with all the pressure.
This is the exposure I wanted.

AT&T says it wont be coming.
They might reconsider but it isn't going to be released "very soon" as some were saying before. It will take some serious threatening to AT&T...

We knew this already (att was the cause) but this is great news for us. The more coverage this gets the better. We want it to be toxic to at&t's PR so they are forced to address the issue! Hopefully more top tier tech blogs will cover this too!

Seriously, i had this problem with my Atrix and my Droid 3. It's actually stupid. I cannot believe At&t would cripple their own device. and what's worse, is that they are not fixing their mistakes. how does this affect them in any way? it doesn't! its absolutely a stupid move on their part. i hope that they understand that they are shooing away customers.
Can you get in trouble for repeatedly posing on their fb page? I see it let's you post on their wall not just comment on posts.

Dear XDA: I think the time has come for you to step out of the shadows. I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and started looking for a magazine in their sizable magazine section. I was frustrated when i went to look for a magazine about android -anything- and found zero mags. However, i did happen to find 12 magazines covering apple. Soo i searched online and to my dismay have only found one magazine that covers android and only apps. Please save all of us who love android and need something to read on the toilet. I promise you i will be the first to subscribe. There is a desert wasteland when it comes to android magazines and you could be our oasis. Seems like now could be the opportune time.
(sorry for the dramatics...just thought it would be fun to post my thoughts about this...)
A magazine on Android ? hmmm...
It's a good idea. There's inough content out there right now to fill a year's worth of monthly editions. I'd subscribe (as long as it wasn't priced unreasonably), and it could open way more people to Android rooting/flashing/modding...

Sounds cool. But sounds dangerous for xda also. Just thinking that people who aren't supposed to root or mod their phones might pick up a magazine andtry, then fail, maybe even brick their phones, and then they try sue xda. All i'm trying to say is I think it's best for people who don't have the mindset for modding or whatnot, to not be introduced to it or even tempted.

A Warning on any article helps, they cannot get sued just because someone brick their phone, it wont be XDA fault.
Yeah but some narrow-minded twit is bound to try and go after xda at some point anyways, if it hasn't happened already. And there's always an opportunistic lawyer to accomodate (apologies to any members who happen to be lawyers lol). That's why there are disclaimers at the top of almost every thread. At least magazine revenue would help pay the legal defense fees.
This site has gotten so big since Android got hot, there's a constant influx of people who just bought their first smartphone and already know they want it rooted with CM7 and A2SD, but have no idea how to make it happen. If properly implemented, the mag could be a roadmap to get them started, and teach them some forum etiquitte (search, read, search, read, find correct forum to ask in) before they end up neck deep in technical terms they've never heard before, and a device that no longer boots. Beats following some half-ass youtube video with a megaupload link and then having a first post on xda titled 'help i bricked my...'
Edit: damn you, skepticalguy, you stole my spot ;-p

A warning/disclaimer won't be a magical 'no lawsuit' pass for anyone. If enough people face issues and ends up bricking their devices, the magazine will get sued. Whether the lawsuit succeeds or not is up in the air, but I doubt it's 100% guaranteed to fail and, more likely than not, retailers selling the magazine will then ask themselves if they should continue stocking it or not.
And, of course, we're just talking about lawsuits from regular folks. Imagine if Google (or any number of other corporations involved in profiting from Android) gets a hold of the news that there's a magazine out there advising the general population on hacking the OS. Somehow, I think this is going to be another one of those times when 'Do No Evil' no longer applies.
If XDA decides to gets its own magazine, it should do what others have done: Give advice to look up how to do it, but do not offer any direct advice. If the people reading the magazine decides to continue doing it, then they only have whatever advice source they looked up to blame if something screws up. Of course, this still doesn't give the 'No Lawsuits' pass, but it'll probably be a much stronger case for the magazine.
All of this could just be my pessimism speaking, so no one has to feel that what I said will be unalterable reality. Still, it seems like an awful lot of risk for an attempt to get into a market that is supposedly not doing so well. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being online-exclusive. I doubt Engadget, with its 5+ million visitors, is complaining.
True true. The xda portal is pretty much like engadget itself. And engadget gets some of its news from xda also. Guess the problem is, the amount of people that are interested in hacking and modding, which is a relatively small amount. And well, as said before, we don't want to be inviting people who aren't supposed to be hacking or modding, else we get more threads saying how they bricked their phones. So maybe it's best to just stay as it is now.
^ Yes, you are right about that, but perhaps it's not as matter of exposure.
Look at the iPhone. Jailbreaking is much more widespread than Android rooting, but last I heard, it was still only about 2-4% of the entire iPhone userbase that was doing it. As others mentioned, there are several iPhone/Apple magazines too.
I think hacking has always been the domain of a small number of folks who probably knows the method to find out how to do such things by themselves anyway. The overwhelming majority probably doesn't want to hack and additional exposure by magazines to them might increase the hacking community by a small amount, but probably not any very significantly.
Rooting/jailbreaking/custom ROMS/etc will probably continue to be the domain of folks like those who frequent XDA and it's unlikely that it'll ever be as popular as, say, downloading MP3s until it becomes a super easy/risk-free task that has an undeniable benefit to the common man.
But frankly, I don't see a need to make it as common as downloading MP3s anyway. XDA is freely available to anyone who wants to know and, for those who don't want to know, let them continue using a stock Samsung Nexus S.
Yes... xda is the way forward! It is improving alot!!!!!!!!!
Now we have xda tv, i cant wait to see whats next!
Also @OP, why don't you take your phone to the toilet LOL You will have your all in one phone/magazine/browser

As you can see from the picture, the AT&T logo is prominently placed on the front. The keys below the display look different compared to the standard Galaxy S II. Instead of a mechanical Home button you now get a capacitive one and there is a dedicated search button as well.
While initially the device did seem like the Infuse 4G to us but then when we saw the side profile we noticed that the camera on this phone was jutting out of the case far more than the one on the Infuse 4G. In fact the camera on the Infuse 4G is completely flush with the body, unlike the one on the Galaxy S II. So the one you see above is undoubtedly the AT&T Attain.
For now, however, we have no information available on the launch date of the device but we will keep an eye out for that.

That looks pretty sweet, but i agree; I like the Korean/EU version better with the three button look.
Saw this a while back. Depending on whether I have the money laying around I'll upgrade to that next.

how in the world are you a senior member and not even see the dry humor in what just transpired there. let me guess, your more of a analytical guy and not a design/imaginative guy. you didn't even fully read my comment, or else you would have seen the different spellings. i sure hope you don't help people with their questions with that selective reading disorder of yours
My bad, if you were joking I completely missed it. Just a lot of people on the forums will come through here browsing, see something like that and take what they see here as gospel. I'm not in any position to speak for AT&T, I've just seen development take place on several of their phones (particularly the atrix now that the bootloader is unlocked). I didn't see it clarified in this thread so I thought I would.
Your post came across a bit uninformed/jumbled, if you were messing around then that's one thing, just maybe clarify in the future for the sake of any newer members that will probably take what they see at face value. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

its cool, i was just kidding anyways. i was basically making it somewhat more obvious what the previous poster (•.•) was saying to pukemon.(the guy who was trying to ghettofy AT&T). He wasn't being serious, at least i hope not...
I just was correcting the confusion without calling him out, and adding on a little humor at the same time. But since we are ending all the fun, just to restate...
YES! AT&T can be rooted!
P.S.~~technically AT&T(a company) cant even be rooted, its their phones that can

i think S2 is coming out in sep2011
this is an amazing phone, can't wait for official us launch!
Can someone spot any differences between that phone and HTC Inspire?

I know, tell me about it. I thought it was about damn time we get a good android phone that isn't fitted with the norm. But word on the grape vine is that AT&T is holding out till september or so, and they are going to slap a dual 1.4 ghz cpu in it I have a tilt 2, and have been waiting to upgrade to this beast for 4 months already, and the thought of having to wait another 2-3 months seems almost unbearable. It's almost making me give in and get the thrill 4g... almost anyways

for anyone just arriving to the conversation, we are talking about the nexus prime teaser video
Welcome back John!
After months of exchanges in private chats, I'm happy you can now speak real in forums directly
And... about the event.. indeed the teaser is exciting ^^
Please allow me to go. I would be able to learn the most from this presentation and I would be able to provide valuable feedback. I would ensure that I relay as much as possible to members of this site as well.
It is important that I attend this conference as I have a lot of time invested in Samsung research and development. This conference has potential to tie up a lot of loose ends, answer my current questions and springboard me onto other open source projects.
From what I have seen, something big would be announced. With my background in hardware and software, I feel I could help others understand more then most. If someone less knowledgeable were sent, the finer points may be lost in the sauce.
A lot of top brass from Samsung will be there... engineers and developers which I may never have a chance to meet again. These people have information which I need, like Exynos processor technologies and OMAP signal descriptions. If they do not have the information, these are the people who would know where to find it. When I get this info, XDA wins with documentation and new recovery/hacking techniques... I've already uncovered a lot with UBM, UART Root and others... All of this has taken months to research. Can you imagine my joy if I had a chance to sit down with a Samsung engineer and get easy answers?
Please pick me to go out to this conference. I've hacked more Samsung devices then most people on this site. I've published the knowledge I've gained about my projects on this site. If you send me, you can be sure that I will relay any knowledge gained to this site.
It would be an honor to be selected for this and I feel I could learn a lot.
Welcome (back) John. Glad to see you here again after our private chats
I would of course also hope to be one of those three selected (due to being a vocal Samsung supporter since the Omnia and most of my developments being focused on Samsung hardware for years now) - but I guess that goes for pretty much everyone
P.S. I do have an XDA t-shirt I could wear
IMO i'll vote for azrienoch to go, and send us a live feed of the show, there's no one better for the job

I had weeks without talking to him since he was my HTC Sensation ROM tester and I moved to the beloved TMO Samsung Galaxy S II and no longer needed him. My friendship with him started when I released Senseless ROM which was a BOMB and got over 110,000 downloads. He started talking on my thread and was a user, who seemed to be a good person, and he joined my FACEBOOK group and all and it continued like that as he asked me if he could test my early builds. I said yes as I was looking for tester to make a testers squad and I got him in. **** was going well and we formed a friendship and laughed and talked daily. I used to tell users to thank me if they liked my work. Homais started spending his 5 thanks on me and telling me about it. I wanted to beat a couple of people that used to flame me on my first days as a developer so I didn’t say no to homais which I had to do so IMO now that I think about it. Homais kept thanking me daily (5 thanks daily) and one day he made 2 accounts to thank me. I did not ask him to do so, he did it by himself and started giving me 15 thanks daily. I wasn’t liking the idea as it was just wrong but he kept thanking me. Well to make it short I moved to the TMO SGSII and homais and me didn’t talk so much. He gave me all his passwords for his accounts, Homais, homiethedev, dr.devman (password=yourmom). I did not thank myself with his accounts as I just didn’t feel like doing so. The HTC Sensation forums made me very big and I wanted to be clear of trouble and stuff like that. More in the present, few weeks ago I told Homais to open a bounty thread for me on the Skyrocket as I was told by a mod that I could not make myself a bounty thread. Homais agreed. He posted the thread for me. But still we didn’t talk much as before. Coming to today, he emails me saying a bunch of crap and I’m like what the f is going on. He started telling me a bunch of crap and that he was going to close the thread for the bounty and more ****. I was like grow up kid.
Homais told mods that I hacked his account, that I thanked myself on threads, and who the hell knows what else. Clearly it was all lies. On the email he sent me, he was saying that the reason for doing this to me was because he helped me a lot and every time he asked me for help, I did not help him. I’m a very busy developer short on time and almost don’t even sleep. He thinks a dev has all the free time as him or what ever. Well yea guys the idiot is so child that got me banned for 2 years because I couldn’t help him when he needed me. GOD dam what kind of balls. Keyboard hood to the attack. That’s what homais is. But well this is not the subject.
To XDA now! You made a big mistake. You DID NOT ASK ME anything. YOU MAKE THE DUMBEST DESITION EVER. You banned someone that has been supporting the community for almost a year for the simple reason that MY DAMM TESTER DECIDED TO RUIN MY LIFE. XDA was all I cared about. Where I felt I was at home, where I shared my work all the time. I was loyal to the site, always helping everyone, listening to users and the last thing I had in my mind was money when I went to the site. I spent LOTS of my free time making my ROMs, ported apps, mods and all I shared on the site. You all are making it wrong guys. But keep it like that and your big site will keep going down and down as it’s been for the year. Rootzwiki is gaining them all. If you don’t unban me I’ll be working on my new home droid-tech.net as the owner really appreciates what I do and as an action of grateful he’s even sending me a free phone and will send me the devices I want to dev on. That’s what I worth. I don’t care about the phones but rather the help he’s giving me. I would like XDA to ban Homais and his accounts homiethedev and dr.devman as he caused this mess and got me into this big issue. I would like XDA to unban me or at least Let me start fresh and all. I have thousands of followers and thousands of followers would be mad at XDA for this.
If you are one of my followers, I will be at droid-tech.net, also you can follow me on twitter and Facebook as those places is where I’ll be posting my work and maybe I’ll have sammydr10 to post my ROMs at XDA. My apologies to my dear users which I love. I WONT stop development as this is just what I love. Too bad that XDA made this injustice with me.
Skyrocket users, I did not still your money for the device. I will buy the device as soon as I can complete the money missing or if someone want to help still then it would be good. I’m really sorry for all this guys.
@TMO SGSII users, ill be posting all my work at droid-tech.net again as the company wiped the data of the site and all the work was lost. Please follow me @bosina_dev (twitter) , Melvin peralta (G+) And on my FB group.
I will post here some proof and pics of what I was talking and some others so you all get the mind clear about me!

^^Right there is the prove that I did NOT stole homais passwords. AND he SAYS THAT HE ****ED ME OVER. NOT THAT I DID WRONG!
Take NOTES!
Again ^^ More proof that the idiot lied.
All seems as a troller.. What an asshole without **** to do!
Again, im sorry to XDA and my users. Maybe I get a chance in live. Thanks guys. Love you all. Apreciate all those who have taken money from their bills to give me some love.

I've referred the thread to the senior moderation team for their attention. As far as I'm concerned, this kind of thread doesn't belong on XDA. If you want to gripe about a ban, then privately message one of the administrators or senior moderators.
I would add that the above fails to address a significant portion of the reason for his removal. Namely the creation of an account to go about thanking himself, and the IP address evidence from the posts made using "his friend's" account.
Let this be a reminder to everyone. I hate seeing this kind of thing. Use secure passwords. Don't give them to ANYONE. If someone gives you their password, don't use it. It's not worth it.
Especially when people are dealing with money and financial things - it's not right for one party to imitate another...
So yes, I would remind people that the above is merely one viewpoint from the individual concerned. It does not address the evidence regarding use of accounts. Either way, I have seen satisfactory proof that the posts were made from Melvin's connection, and not that of the account holder.
I don't know what these kids are playing at, but folks, take this as a learning opportunity - if you have shared your password, change it. Then don't do it again. Make sure it's a good one. It's your duty to keep your password safe on XDO, and other sites you use.
And yes, making unauthorised access to another user's account is illegal. We don't want to investigate if you had permission or not - that's what the courts are for. Just a reminder to look after yourselves online

I am the Attorney who wrote that comment on Droid Life and wrote the FCC Complaint. Please direct all your questions to me as I'm happy to answer them and help move things forward. A couple of things:
1) To those that think unlocking a bootloader is pointless with all the workarounds, I don't want to hear it, if that's how you feel, you're entitled to your opinion but please don't pollute this thread with your useless comments. Help or get out. PS: if the bootloader gets unlocked I fully expect either a) a statement from anyone saying it was pointless thanking the community if they choose to unlock or b) you DO NOT unlock your bootloader
2) I have not taken Verizon to court, the FCC did not take Verizon to court. The FCC made a determination that Verizon is violating the C Block regulation (it's a regulation, not law, there's a difference) and fined them. The violation was in regard to tethering apps and Google wallet. While my complaint touched on these things, the gravamen of my complaint was regarding locked bootloaders and custom ROMs, which I believe there is still a significant argument to be made.
3) Anyone who wants to read my full complaint (and send it to the FCC or their US Senators/Representatives under their name) it is located here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/109uYmho_6daIpAl0ACPSFoK0qrd6K9wp5yeqM7dEaoI/edit edit it accordingly as the beginning part was specific to me
4) Keep me informed and up to date about anything. The more minds the better. I've subscribed to this topic so I'll check in when I can.
5) As of yet I can't really think of a cause of action to take Verizon to court other than an injunction, but I'm not even thinking about a lawsuit unless it's funded or I get some help from other attorneys. I have a full time job and I'm learning to develop in my free time so I just don't have the time to pursue a giant lawsuit by myself for free right now

YOUR NAME

You do not need an FCC Complaint Number, the reason I had a complaint number was I had previously sent in a complaint.
Make sure you also "sign" it at the bottom (last page) above where it says Complainant

1) Use my complaint (provided in my post above) and in the first part where it says Verizon Wireless against... fill in your name and in the last part where it says "Respectfully Submitted" put your info in (Name, address, telephone, email)
2) I filed the complaint with the FCC and got a BS canned response from Verizon, I refiled and got the same canned BS response. After my Senator followed up I got a response from the FCC saying I could file a formal complaint, but clearly that was just a dead end since I filed 2 formal complaints and pushed the issue with my senator. Though I guess someone at the FCC caught wind because that 7/31 decision seemed to agree with my complaints and the timing was a little too coincidental
3) Completely free: go to fcc.gov and click on file consumer complaint. Email, fax or mail my complaint with your information filled in to them. I would also send it to your US Senators. Anyone from Minnesota, I think Senator Franken would be a great person to follow up with something like this.
4) In order to help out, SPREAD THE WORD! The more people that are vocal about this the better. When I was doing this with Moto I tried to get Droid Life, Android Central and Phandroid to post an article but none of them were interested. I say, spam them and get them to post an article with my complaint and what people can do. Again, the more people that are complaining and vocal, the more likely a response will be had. Give people my complaint to fill in, email the fcc chairman and commissioners (google to find their emails, it's just [email protected]). If you (or someone you know who is interested in this type of thing) is an attorney, feel free to PM me and maybe we can talk about something. Again, I don't have a tremendous amount of time to invest in this for no pay and by myself. But if there were enough attorney's interested I'd do it pro bono (for free) with the help of a group of attorneys.
And as I said, if you have questions about Verizon's policy and potential violations, ask me and I'll try to answer them. I did all the research and writing myself in my spare time and I think I nailed it insofar as the legal issues. There is next to no case law on the specific issues so I had to make legal arguments based on what little resources I had and the plain language of the regulation. Now at least that the FCC has released this decision, there is some precedent that they are actually willing to enforce a regulation instead of being a puppet for the wireless carriers (though I'm not completely convinced they're autonomous, 1.25 million to Verizon is nothing when their profits were 2.4 billion last year, that's .0005% of their profits for those keeping score at home)

am i the only one who sees no reason for unlocking the bootloader? we have a perfectly functioning workaround.

Perfectly is an overstatement. It kinda sucks and we don't have a ton of development cause devs frankly don't want to deal with it.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
We do have a good workaround, however we shouldn't need a workaround.
Hopefully this goes somewhere, and Verizon has to fork out some more of that money of ours.
What was the outcome of this letter? It was pre Nexus S, so I assume it's been dealt with?

Workarounds are a stop-gap, duct tape, a rubber band and bubble gum, and should be temporary. Many (myself included) don't want to deal with it and it isolates us from a significant part of the dev community. One of the reasons I wanted the SIII is for its large, wide-spread attention...but ours is gimped.
The bigger issue is that VZW won't stop at bootloaders; how long before they lock everything?
The biggest issue is VZW is doing an end-run around the law.

The reason why we are "drama queens" is because Verizon is violating the law and is telling us that they could care less about that they locked the bootloader even if it violates the Block C since they can somehow get away with stuff like that.

Obviously a noob with no idea of the potential this phone has and how crippled it is with a locked bootloader. Either that or he is killing time until he can preorder the iphone 5.

Anyone know who the author is ??
the title is little misleading only cuz the fcc has not taken them to court yet, and more then likely Verizon will comply before it makes it to court
it looks more of very formal and will written compliant to the fcc (could be wrong still reading from phone)
very valid points presented in the compliant the fcc will diffidently pay attention to this one
i would suggest the author attache the petition in this thread to the complaint

Yeah, well. They claim that an unlocked bootloader shaves a few seconds off boot time. But it also has the ability to prevent bricks, and it makes development more open-ended. Right now all of vzw's custom rom devs have to bake kexec into the rom, which require extra work.

To everyone saying that some people here are drama queens, look at all the development the international version has: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1566. Just about all I see on that page is ROMs, ROMs, and more jelly bean ROMs. The locked bootloader has turned devs away from our version (as many people have already said). You may be happy with CM10 and a kexec workaround, but a lot of us want more options.

Did Motorola have an agreement with the FCC prohibiting such activities?
If it doesn't stop now, how long before your recovery also becomes locked?

International version had a jump on Verizon. Hell every other carrier did. I browsed the first page of at&ts development and counted 7 ROMs Verizon had 4 on their first page. And don't even bother looking at sprints development section. This is all getting blown out of proportion.
