Android is dead ? - Android General

Anyone read this ?

I don't know where to start but suffice to say that his facts are wrong not least the one saying no new android phone can compare to iphone. Pretty sure the quad core sgs3 can.
Also samsungs market share recently overtook apples yet he says apple is way ahead.
Most of the report is factually incorrect opinion not news.

This is nothing more than opinion and partial facts/ incorrect facts. There is no doubt the iPhone/iPad sell better. There is also little argument that Android missed the mark with their tablets/tablet marketing. But in no way is Android dying.
I would counter this article with how long will iPhone users upgrade to the same exact device with the same non evolving software before they start to get bored? I couldn't bring myself to buy a 4 after my 3g because the device bored the hell out of me. I walked into the Apple store, picked up a 4 and said to myself why in the hell would I lock into two more years, they practically changed nothing.

I think his numbers are wrong...

I will acknowledge that Android is suffering terribly from the fragmentation issue especially in the arena where consumers want an "appliance" that simply does what it does. I think enthusiasts and developers in the Android world have great fun with all the aspects of tinkering, it appeals to our intelligence that we can fix things, improve things and evolve. Most consumers are not interested in tinkering.

Lol, this is funny.

He hit the nail on the head. The iphone carries the user friendly market, as long as there are techies(men) and those who simply don't follow the crowd android will thrive. I do agree that Google should implement some kind of OS requirements, as many devices that could be running ICS are not, but to the previous comment of I walked in and said this really isn't any different than the 3g...that is pretty much it...apple will be apple, android is at least fresh in this perspective.

It's at 5% of the market and growing. With 300k new activations daily, that means at least 15k new ICS devices are joining the market every day. Now that OEMs are finishing up the ICS updates, and releasing their new phones/tablets with ICS, that is only going to grow over the next few months.

Yeah, HTC bringing in $2.3 billion in revenue is floundering. Even with profits down, they still made nearly $200 million in profit for the 1st quarter. Given the success of the One series phones, that will probably go up this quarter. And Samsung markets phones for everything, and I'm pretty sure they mention Android for the Android devices.

I would say the Galaxy Nexus equals the iPhone 4S, and the just announced SGSIII will be the equal of the next iPhone in terms of hardware. Software, it is an apples v. oranges comparison. However, I have seen comparison tests that show it is usually faster or easier to perform simple tasks on the Galaxy Nexus versus the iPhone.

Unless the next iphone gets larger there's only so much you can shoehorn into a smaller form factor in which case apple customers could start looking elsewhere but as it stands there are a few android phones that could beat iphone including the s3 and optimus lte2.
But if android were dead then samsung lg and htc would all be failing miserably and their not.

My opinion is that Android is more secure than iOS. It is open-source, so anyone can look at the code (most of it anyway), find issues, fix them, and then submit the fix for inclusion in the next update. There is also SEAndroid being worked on by the same group that does SELinux. Apple is closed source, so when a problem is found, you have to wait for Apple to fix it. You can't tell when the fix will come, or if it will even come. Nor do you have the option to include the fix yourself, as there is no way to patch it without the source to build from.
Isn't the iPhone security able to be easily bypassed by anyone, regardless of the phone being locked or not? Android seems to be the more secure platform for most things from what I've seen, but I'm not a security researcher, so anything is possible.

another idiot Apple fanboy writes a bunch on non-factual nonsense. truth is, he knows Android is killing Apple, and he can't accept it, so instead he puts Android down to make himself feel better about being an iPhone lover. it's a classic example of the most basic human psychology.

The funny thing about this...which kind of invalidates everything he says, is that Samsung is running Android. I don't think Samsung has a single phone out right now that isn't Android.
"No one wants an Android tablet" No, it's just that the iPad has a name behind it. If not for that name, it'd be one of the worst selling pads on the market.

I think when the general population talk about the IPHONE they don't think of iOS but the Form factor of the phone. I also think that the general non techie population doesn't really know what Android REALLY is. This why every phone that's not an iPhone is considered a "Droid" to them.
Non techie people are seduced by the shiny and admittingly good design of the iPhone and as long as Facebook and Instagram works on it they are happy and they "love their iphone".

Wow :what: where to start. The incorrect " facts " . The overt Apple fanboy flare. The way he should've started is by saying, " all the information you are about to given is conjecture and opinion " . Well I guess that's why some people buy, Apple products. Then there are those that think, research, and make the smart choice, Android.

Its not that ipad has a name for itself, its that apple had a name for itself a long time ago. When the iPod came out it was a big hit. It then evolved into the iPod touch, which was alright for a while. Then they made the iPhone. Everyone was already hooked on apples products, thus not giveing android too much of a chance. Except for those who want something different, so they went and got an android. Slowly people are going to leave the iPhone cause they are going to get bored of the same old SH*T. Basicly the iPod is apples reputation. The ios is boring and kinda plain.
Who cares about what sells better? How about what performs better? And I know I would much rather be able to do whatever the hell I want with the phone like customizing, and tweaking the phone to run faster, and not having to pay for everything. And you can't even do anything on the computer without a jailbreak or being annoyingly restricted to iTunes!
IPhone sucks! ANDROID RULES!!!

This is quite simple to respond to. IPhone is for mainstream users, every friend of mine says iPhone is the best phone until I show them some android devices. We live in a world where all the crap which has an apple on the back is better by the eyes of people that don't even know what the market has to offer.
Another thing is, android is still growing, and iOS has much has it keep evolving, I believe it's pretty much that: a phone with the homescreen full of icons and with no customizing whatsoever; a phone that in my opinion gives a terrible user experience.
I'm no fan of Samsung devices but it's true they're doing a great job on expanding android.

And no, the iPhone will not kill the Android no matter what carrier signs it. iPhones share the same traits as Macs -- pretty, easy to use, and nearly idiot-proof -- but the more advanced and adept users will always gravitate towards Android (linux) and Corporate users towards Windows.
Besides, iPhones to date have been overpriced and, like Macs, the only way you can run their OS is on their hardware. Android runs on everything from tablets to mp3 players to cell phones across a variety of manufacturers.

This is just blatantly wrong, so go troll somewhere else -- there's lots of big-name developers on Android, including some from the iPhone world.
And yes, there's lots of garbage on the android market, but it does work. Don't forget that Amazon will be launching their cleaned-up android market this year too.
@burtcom actually your proving my point. please show me ONE app that they focused on the TEGRA chips that isnt on the Iphone??? Please name one? Also Amazon market??? Ummm where is it? Ohhhh its not here yet....oh ok Let me know when it is!
Please name me the developers on Android...... Netflix (not yet)...Gameloft (ummm old ports from iphone) EA.....ummm wheres madden? Oh still in beta?
Dont talk when you have no clue!
Oh and if there are games on Gamelofts site (the Ports) there made for the droid phones and the resolution is way off wack!!! But enjoy
The US is the last place that the iPhone hasn't been available on multiple carriers. The rest of the world has carriers with both the iPhone and Android phones competing directly, and Android is still doing great there. A Verizon iPhone will probably put a dent in their Android handset sales, no doubt, but there's always going to be a segment of the market that want something cheaper, or more powerful.
So no, Android will be just fine after tomorrow.
And apps are not the be all end all. They only matter so much to iPhone because it's basically just a glorified app launcher with a few apps bundled in. You can't even see the current weather without launching an app.
OP, you do realize that the iPhone is available on many major carriers in the the rest of world, right? Do you seriously think the US has the biggest cellphone market? (The answer is no. I'm telling you this since you probably don't know the answer.) Android is still growing at a rapid rate and taking up market share in the rest of the world. We shall see how the iPhone 4 does IN THE US when it comes to Verizon. If iPhone 4 Verizon does destroy the Android, then Android will die ONLY in the US, not the rest of the world.
So what if many apps are ported from the iPhone? Why don't you ask why those developers are porting their apps over to Android if they don't see the potential of Android?
Technically, Android has the best developer that no iPhone developers can compare - Google itself. Where did iPhone's Maps and Youtube apps come from? Which OS has the better Google apps?
you see now I never asked which was a better os......i stated that without support from TRUE developers making apps a OS is no Good.

You didn't ask, you simply implied that iOS is better. People here are just disagreeing with you. And most of your arguments are surrounding the game department of the iOS. What else do you have? Even if you bring some more things on the table, you still can't argue what I wrote in my first few paragraphs. Enjoy the iPhone. I honestly think it is a great phone, but I hope you didn't type your posts using the iPhone. If so, learn how to fully use your iPhone please, otherwise it would just be a waste, no offense.
When people keep talking about apps apps apps for iPhone, they are just talking about games. Really, ask any iPhone users what awesome apps they are talking about that aren't games, and they will not have an answer for you. Or name apps that also exist on Android. Netflix? Yeah, its pretty cool. But its not like its been out all that long for iPhone, and the video selection is pretty limited, AND it will be out for Android anytime now, since it was already leaked at CES.
Seriously, how many games do you need? I love playing games as much (probably more) than the next guy. And there is plenty on Android, and developer support is growing. If you need more games than available on Android, its pretty likely that you need to spend more time on other activities besides playing little casual games on your phone.
Besides, not all developers are in love with Apple. Look at Adobe and PrimeSense (the original developer of the XBox 360 Kinect controller). These are important players, that were completely turned off by Apple's need to domineer and control, and eventually gave up on Apple.
The OP implies that the only reason that not everyone owns an iPhone, is because they are tied to Verizon. There are plenty of people like me that have been on AT&T forever, but have no interest in the iPhone. AT&T customer for over a decade, and I've never owned an iPhone, and never will. If Apple had their way, there would be no variety in hardware, or how we use our phones. There will always be people that find these types of limitations suffocating and unacceptable. Some of us like to have the choice of more than one form factor (say a larger screen, or a smaller one, or a hardware keyboard), or to have a homescreen that isn't just a near-useless grid of shortcuts. It would be a sad place where only one device could exist. Luckily, things don't work that way, and there is always room for competition in just about any business. So with any luck, Android won't be going anywhere soon.
Sure the iPhone is popular. But saying an OS is doomed just because its not the most popular platform, and doesn't have the most games, then that's the same as saying Mac computer shouldn't exist either.
Android won't die tomorrow
But troll should die today
I don't know about others but to me a cell its more like a helping hand or what ever you like to call it. Atleast for the tech lovers like me. But we all have different ways of doing our day to day stuffs. Android appreciates and compliments that. That's why I will go for Android. For the level of freedom it gives you, not how many new cookies it have in the box.

Android Manufacturers are Underestimating Apple

It really doesn't matter what type of outstanding specs these guys put in the upcoming android phones, Apple's Iphone is the number one phone out there. These manufacturers have forgotten that it was Apple that brought the price of smartphones down drastically. You don't beat the number one product on the market by charging MORE for your product.
Now that Apple is on multiple carriers, Android cannot afford to make such critical mistakes. The recently announced prices on upcoming android devices have made me wait for news on the IPHONE 5. I will pay MORE for the number one phone, but damned if I'm going to pay MORE for a phone that doesn't even receive updates till the next model.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one...
Yet you come here claiming that the Iphone 4 or yet to be release Iphone 5 is "the number one phone", by who's standard? Sales? Yes, Apple has an outstanding marketing department.
I agree the Iphone "can" be a great phone, once it is jailbroken... But the proprietary of the device will turn others away in these forum. You know your in an Android forum right? Get prepared to be flamed.
I am glad the Iphone is doing well, and I am glad the Iphone is no longer exclusive only to AT$T. Which in turn for us is a great thing. You will see in the upcoming months what Android smartphone has to offer. You'll end up having buyers remorse.

Enjoy being locked into the Apple way and the constant cycle of not updating as you wait for jailbreaks.
And Apple never brought the price of Smartphones down... $199 on contract was the standard price for WinMo phones long before Apple. And they had expandable memory and removable batteries.
I would or could not ever go back to an iphone after owning a quality android phone. There really is no comparison in user experience

You may not be a noob from a tech standpoint but you are from a business aspect. The iPhone outsells because of image. People are sheep - they want something that is spun in a certain way - Apple does the marketing for the one phone product they offer. Android doesn't have that luxury - it has 20 different manufacturers so there is not ONE Android phone to compare to the iPhone.
People buy iPhones because they see ads for one appstore, for one company, etc. it is simple and fits the simple mind. Price has NOTHING to do with it. If it did, no one would buy the higher capacity iPhones. Look at all the people that waited in line to buy the first iPhone - no product reviews, and no subsidy.... where is the price theory there? They buy them today on eBay for $800 - not rational - but supply and demand dictates - along with perception and the idea of being a sheep.
Just like the new commercial knocking Toyota... anyone that has driven a Camry knows that it is a plain boring car - it gets the job done though - but why does everyone buy it when there are better values? Sheep.

I agree wholeheartedly.
I think in the coming years we'll see the iphone go the way of the blackberry regardless of its lemming followers. Apple is constantly introducing new OS versions with hardly barely any significant feature changes. When multitasking was introduced, it absolutely destroyed any hint of speed on the iphone 3g. Yet, we've been multitasking with android since introduction on hardware that is just slightly faster.
With every Apple update, the older devices get slower, yet with every android update, devices that can run the update become faster, and more responsive.
Dell2,
In order for Apple to catch back up to Android in terms of innovation and feature-richness, they will have to heavily modify their OS, which in turn will force them to significantly update their hardware. If this happens (or rather, when Steve Jobs stops gracing California's judicial system with his presence every time somebody pulls the same **** on him that he pulled on IBM, and actually gets back to creating new product ideas) you will watch the price of the iphone skyrocket past the Android. When this happens, you will watch sales decline and Apple will drop out of the phone business.
Truth be known, aside from everything that Alphadog has said, the only other reason the iphone made it to 4 is because every electronics manufacturer and their mom started making their products with a proprietary Apple connector. Imagine if they hired a linux guy and started making them with MicroUSB?
oh and for the record I absolutely loathe everything about i(can'tstarthalfthetimeona64bitmachinesofuckloadingyourmusic)tunes.

Imagine if they hired a linux guy and started making them with MicroUSB?
oh and for the record I absolutely loathe everything about i(can'tstarthalfthetimeona64bitmachinesofuckloadingyourmusic)tunes.

the iOS isn't even the world's leading smartphone platform...I don't think it's ever beaten symbian. android, however, has passed symbian and is now the leading platform.

Sales numbers don't make something better lol microsoft os's are not better than apple os's but out sell them and are the most sold os out there. Not to mention iphone gained popularity way before google released android and just has a huge fan base, plus popularity of the ipod helped out a lot to.
Don't get wrong I'm not bashing the iphone it definitely has a place in the market for people , old people who can't figure stuff out , middle age people who can't figure stuff out , teens cause they have to have what there friends have and noobs in general lol
Open source never gains the popularity that the big company's gain ( Linux for example ) but all power users will tell you the same thing and if you don't know what that is then you definitely belong with your iphone
And for those who get bored with Android, what the hell are you gonna do on an iphone , jail break it lol , get real lol

This is old news, regarding Oracle. That article would make you think Android is about to crumble, and that is not the case. At least he points out that re-writing the code, slightly, would make this go away.
Google has way too much power/$ to not fix this for Android, which has exceeded their expectations wildly.
In short, do not fret. Apple just being scared, as they should be.
Just like Jobs said recently via an email that Android is tracking people and that they do not.... ignoring all the articles about apple tracking people lately.
EDIT, haha, just noticed he said Symbian would likely benefit (which is dead).... sad considering how much Nokia stock I own (frown face)
The iphone makes up 50% of Apples revenue stream now so Android is a massive threat to their business. Totally idiotic for a company or that size to have most of their eggs in one basket if you ask me.
Personally i think competition is good and keeps the market honest, but all this patent trolling that's going on is just ludicrous. It's no better than kids fighting over marbles in the playground.

How can you compare a hardware/software vendor to a software vendor?
When google is able to claim it makes the hardware its software runs on, then you can start saying Android is a "threat" to apple.
Google and Apple are entirely different beasts. Apple makes money when it sells its hardware, it includes the software "free" with its devices and it has always done this with any of its products.
Google makes software for multiple vendors, and makes zero hardware.
Apple has always been pretty sue-happy, moreso than other phone/computer manufacturers.

i would like to add 1 small piece to this although apple are a hardwar/software vendor it does contract out to people like samsung , so this apple google is also apple samsung writ , android and samsung together is a bigger threat to apple and apple think by sueing (as most companys do and would do in the same situation) both samsung and google may slow them down or as is most likely with the release of all the new smartphones ie galaxy s 2 and new nexus phones will generate a feelling within buyers that apple sell a better product because others are copying , this is not a serious attempt to stop android but with the timing so close to may first release date for sgs2 is more of a marketing exercise , for instance when google lost a case recently they had to pay 5 million $ where as if they had payed for the licence out right may have cost them 50 million $ dont take these figures to seriously but you get the idea this is the way business works and will carry on working as has been said before apple will still buy from samsung google will still develop android licences will be paid for in one form or another and someone will use somebody elses idea to improve their own and tommorrow will be another day
Thank you for the information.

Sort of, it's powered by google as all android phones are, but it isn't MADE by google, it is made by HTC, and the Nexus S is made by Samsung. Google works with the companies closely for these phones, but the phones themselves are not manufactured by google, and I'd be willing to bet google doesn't design the phones and pic the internal components to them either so much, they probably have some influence, but I'd be surprised if they had complete control when it is the manufacturer who stands to make or lose money on the phone based on sales.

My Apple Rant

With all the bull**** Apple is saying they have patented that Android is copying (such as slide to unlock), I've been thinking... Wouldn't it be great if all Android devices moved to edge-to-edge displays then claimed ownership when Apple ends up doing the same thing?
For that matter, if Android gets rid of physical buttons before Apple there's another thing Android can claim. With Android devices being released all year and Apple devices once annually, Android should start hitting all of the hardware innovations at least 1 quarter before Apple and it will start to appear that Apple is copying Android and EVERYTHING that iOS 5 does is copied is already in use by either Android and/or Windows mobile (you know it's bad when Windows Mobile does something before you).
I'm not really an Apply or Android fanboi. I liked Apple when it offered a superior product and now I like Android because it offers a superior product. I'm an economist-to-be and I hate the monopolization of information. Classic case of humanity holding back humanity. If the last decade has taught us anything it should be that open-source beats EVERYTHING (... eventually... if people like the initial product) Because no company can compete with the entire world being your potential developers.
And yeah, Samsung OBVIOUSLY copies the iPhone. BUT the operating system is superior and that's what people want. The quality of an iPhone hardware (minus ****ty antennas of course) with the freedom of Android.
Apple needs to allow developers the freedom that Android allows and I prey to god that that is why they are hiring all the jailbreakers/jailbreak app developers... because the best thing in the world for Android is a better iPhone.

That's not true. I own a Samsung phone and other Samsung media devices and from my experience, Samsung doesn't know the first thing about software creation. My Infuse is a joke for reliability and functionality. My P3 and other Samsung MP3 players are horrendous for the UI. My Infuse, though, has been the buggiest and most unreliable smartphone I've owned since my Palm Treo 680.
I have a lot of electronic gadgets, several smartphones among them, and the iPhone 4 has been the most reliable and trouble-free smartphone I've ever owned. It's boring as hell, but it is reliable and the OS is superb.
As far as Apple copying others...are you saying that if a company copied Apple for many years and then Apple implements a feature similar to the company that has been copying Apple and infringing Apple's patents, it's unfair? Where, then, was the the unfairness when the other companies were copying Apple?
By the way, if Samsung wants to put out software as lousy as they are with their Smartphones, I hope Apple does stop them...throughout the world. Samsung's software is second to none for being horrible. Let Apple do us all a favor and put an end to their smartphones until Samsung gets off its high-horse and acknowledges how horrible their software is and then does something effective about remedying it.

Competition breeds innovation. For example, there are plenty of apps that get made for iPhone that are eventually ported over to Android.

1) I guess I don't care about sense or touchwiz or motoblur ect. it doesn't matter because with Android I have the freedom to remove it.
2) All Apple has ever done is copy others and clean it up. I guess you can all that innovation if you like and I won't argue. I'm saying that patents in general are bad for innovation and in general it's better for consumers if company A copies all the the things that company B does right and tries to fix all the the things that company B does wrong. That is evolution. I don't think evolution should be illegal. And assuming that Apple hardware and software are better than Samsung's and the phones are priced similarly a rational consumer would never purchase a Samsung phone, and that obviously isn't the case.
Aside from that, I'm 100% sure that Apple infringes upon patents held by numerous other companies. All large corporations do. Most don't go suing everyone when it happens. If Apple thinks they are so much better than Android then just one up Android at every turn and they will always hold more market share.
3) If Samsung is truly that horrible then Apple shouldn't have to sue them. No one would buy their products and they will go out of business.

You forget most of us really do not care about the "retail software" in the phone. All the phones that are sold IMHO have real crap for their oem software. That is why we are here. As far as phones go My Galaxy phone has been beyond great in so many ways and is hands down so much better than the Iphone and its ios. People forget that the Galaxy phone was released at the same time of the Iphone 3 and it still outperforms the Iphone 4. So to me, hardware that provides that longevity and flexibility is quite notable
And I love iPhone for reliability just as Apple users love Macs for reliability. I don't care so much for reliability anymore. I care about flexibility & freedom. I don't like that access to 90% of my iPhone is locked off. I don't like a boring screen full of little squares. I'm glad that Apple exists for those people who use to get Viruses once a week on their PCs, I don't plan to ever get a virus on my PC and if I do I know how to fix it. Just like my phone, I know Android takes time to tweak but I like the option to put 1000 hours into my phone to make it what I want it to be but that isn't the point of this thread really. I'm just thinking that two years from now Android will hold all the patents and Apple will regret this petty bull****.

One could argue that they have all these outdated features being added because they only really expand features once a year, and that may be a great argument but to me it's just another reason to be pissed off at Apple.

But Apple is still the biggest kid in the sandbox, and when it wants to take its ball and go home, it does so with a big public show[,but] Apple running off with someone else's ball isn't a problem at all." - Mike Schuster http://www.minyanville.com/dailyfeed/2011/06/07/apples-ios-5-directly-lifts/

No one would care if iOS copied Android because as you said many things are copied between the two platforms. The difference being that google/android/samsung/HTC/motorola don't cry and sue for every little tiny aspect of iOS that was copied off of Android. Even Apple fans that I know are sick of how Apple is acting. It's no way to conduct yourself as a leading company in your field.

Well Apple said that Samsung copied their iPad design and there were dozens of tablets YEARS before the iPad with the exact same design. No one sued Apple for using a design already used in the past because it's expected in the industry. A tablet is merely a laptop without a keyboard.
The slide to unlock existed before the iPhone but Apple made it prettier so they think they own it now.
Android at it's core is much much different than iOS. The apps are the same obviously but the apps are not made by Apple or Android. They are made by the users and you know what? Blackberry had apps long before the iPhone existed.
Apple stole a lot of great ideas from a lot of other companies and made it partially open source called it innovation (iOS & Android would both be worthless if it weren't for all the app developers) and I'm glad they did it... I just don't think they have the right to sue people now for doing the very thing they did once upon a time.

Apple doesn't copy? Nokia and blackberry were on the block playing smartphone before apple made it cool to have one. I still see apple users shoving their products literally in other peoples faces saying look at me! look at me! The only truly innovative thing, besides making capacitive ui's very functional, is their marketing. Apples marketing has made most of their user base tools and fools. The rest actually need a smartphone and probably would jump ship to android or windows if that was the necessary flavor of their lifestyle/work. Apple equates to about as generic as you can get.

i would definitely credit them for the idea of ecosystem being driven by appstore and itunes. In terms of device and overall layout, I've had similar layouts on my winmo devices for years prior to the iphone release

What will it take to make android #1? Voice your opinion here

Hello after hearing about apple reaching 500 billion dollar, my question is what does android need to do to become a serious competitor to apple so that people would rather buy android then an iphone? What does apple have in the iPhone and ipad that android dosent? I would like to see some opinions of what you all think thanks

Android users need Watson, that would literally kick the $*it out of siri. I mean that would be amazing- doctors, researchers in the field, really just anyone in the sciences could use it and the average person could enjoy it as well as learn from it. Android is the perfect channel to reach all sectors and the general public with such a new and really amazing technology.

Yes the technology is far past apple, in my opinion android will be the future, I try to write what I imagine in the future of technology but I can't put it in words

I see Android the same way I do Linux. It will attract the true techies but but for the average user it will not appeal to theme as it takes to much work to get it just right and most people are just to lazy
IMHO is the main difference between android and iOS, that android is more customizable and, with that, its more complicated. So, most people who only want to have a working phone which is looking good and don't want to learn anything bout software will buy an iPhone. Because its simpler.
I think android will be catshing up with apple, because it's only getting better, it is open source, the phones is cheaper and more options to change the apperence of the phone!
Why, isn't it the number one OS yet?
Hey thank you all for your replies, I was at best buy couple week ago and a person was looking to buy a android tablet or an ipad 2, I was next to the person when I was playing with a tablet and he asked me do you no what is better? Ipad 2 or this tablet? (He was looking at the Asus transformer) I told him Asus was, but he end up buying the ipad because his Droid phone always get a virus, freezes and so now he thinks all android are like that....if he only knew

You can't entirely confuse profits with marketshare (which Android has 51% of, I think they were saying). Apple is able to get away with a higher price markup for lesser specs because
0) low price elasticity - iSheep will continue to buy and to rationalize their mother company no matter what
1) they're facing no competition from other, similar iPhone makers, unlike android makers who compete with each other in both specs and price
2) they slice down anything that even vaguely resembles competition with lawsuits (even where they're clearly not making iPhones)
3) the brand itself has become so hyped that it's able to continue to get new users - I guess you could count this as marketing
They still have a much greater stranglehold on the pad market, so a lot of the profits probably come from that.
Finally, if you believe this post at least, Apple is able to squeeze more profits from the way our carriers and subsidies work. Nowadays, it's standard for the carrier to bundle phones along with their services, in a dual-pay system (the carrier "subsidizes" part of the phone cost in exchange for a contract). Because of Apple's particular market power (users might switch to another carrier if the other has iPhone and they don't), they are able to demand that carriers subsidize more while taking away the profits. That way, they make more money without directly charging the buyers. Indirectly, of course, the carriers probably pay for this through increased fees in general, which means that everyone ends up sponsoring the iPhone.
In other words, they've successfully managed to implement an "iPhone tax". Isn't bundling the greatest thing ever?
As for how to make Android better, updates and better phone compatibility is definitely an issue. ICS, for example, needed to be available quickly for multiple devices as soon as it's released. There really is no way to do this, except.. release it earlier. Have a completely open beta, like the Linux kernel, so that everyone can get compatibility working from day -100 onwards. If flashiness (and non-copying by Apple) is an issue, at least give the manufacturers early access to it, so that they're able to start working on device compatibility right away.
Meanwhile, unfettered by bureaucracy, custom roms are churning out faster than any manufacturer ever could. You could have updates and features faster than you ever thought possible; the average user, however, doesn't know enough, or isn't confident enough to go through the installation process. Google should include an easy ROM installer/backup utility by default. That way, the users get a full taste of the speed and power of openness, which really is so intoxicating that they'll never go back to a closed system ever again.
(They could even put start posting up their own custom ROMs! Imagine what their developers could do, unhindered by the megacompany issues. We would have updates, the like of which we've never seen before.)
If Android was optimized to run perfectly on one core just like Windows Phone 7 than I can see a lot of people using it. When I talk to Android users who don't know anything about custom roms/root they complain about force closes and applications not working. Also how there phone slows down.

Yeah, agree with two posts above... The slow spread of Android 4.0 is only good for Apple, the big companies should realize that they're depending on the users liking android, and you will not get them to like Android with refusing to give them updates. Sometimes I think they are not able to look into the nearer future to see what's necessary for them...

great info everyone yes I do notice a bit of a slow down on android 4.0 but I'm on a single core device, hopefully by summer they can find a solution to make android 4.0 more stable and better performance, I feel that the android team is working fast to come up with a software that would bring iPhone users to android, but when iPhone 5 comes out I hope some android phone company's have something up there sleeve that will be able to compete with apple

Right now there on the right path to becoming number one in the market, what i think they need to do to become number one.
all official releases of android to be the same across all phones, things like TouchWiz to be scraped altogether
moderation on the market to stop useless buggy apps from making the market look bad
an android OS for desktops/laptops that will run consumer products
[\LIST]
Better hardware acceleration on all applications.
I think that iPhone as an advantage : there is only one model.
So you can find dock for desktop, car, audio, ...
Android is only the softwar and each constructor have to make is own accessories and so on.
In my opinion, one major problem of Android devices is about fragmentation.. I hope that Android OEMs can release updates for all devices faster.

Yes that's true but there is more money to be made in the android market rather then the iPhone. There are ALOT of brands and generics that make the same accessorizes for the iPhone and each brand is struggling to make money when they all make the same product, unlike android. Verity is better
